Murder Will Out: James Hogg's Use Of The Bier-Right In His Minor Works And Confessions, Tanya Ann Terry Dec 2010

Murder Will Out: James Hogg's Use Of The Bier-Right In His Minor Works And Confessions, Tanya Ann Terry

Theses and Dissertations

In The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824), James Hogg uses the uncanny trope of the bier-right, a medieval superstitious belief of Christian origin that a murdered corpse will bleed in the presence or at the touch of the actual murderer, to negotiate his struggle with fading belief in local superstitions and religious faith in the Scottish Borders. Examining the origins of the bier-right, court cases involving the bier-right, and Hogg's minor works using the bier-right I offer a comparison of how Hogg manipulates and morphs this trope in Confessions. I also argue that the main …

The Role And Importance Of Cave Microclimate In The Sustainable Use And Management Of Show Caves, Chris R. De Freitas Dec 2010

The Role And Importance Of Cave Microclimate In The Sustainable Use And Management Of Show Caves, Chris R. De Freitas

KIP Articles

Cave microclimate is important in the study of cave flora and fauna, certain karst processes underground and hydrogeologic aspects of speleothems; thus an understanding of microclimatic processes is especially important in the management of show caves. Here, examples are drawn from researchon New Zealand caves and examined in the context of sustainable cave use management practices. The work considers that the cave manager is concerned, firstly, withdefining the desired or optimal level or range of environmental conditions that should prevail and, secondly, withmaintaining them. To do this requires an appropriate and reliable monitoring system. It involves selecting key indicators to …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nitrogen Substituted Zeolites, Fulya Dogan Dec 2010

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nitrogen Substituted Zeolites, Fulya Dogan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The interest in basic solid materials, particularly for basic zeolites has considerably increased in the last two decades because of their potential use in catalysis and separation. Basic zeolites have most often been obtained by ion-exchange or impregnation with alkali metal cations or grafting of organic bases onto zeolite pore walls. Such materials often suffer from instability and/or pore blockage, because none of these approaches places basic sites directly into the zeolite framework. Recently zeolitic materials have been made with some of the bridging oxygen atoms in Si-O-Si and/or Si-O-Al linkages replaced by NH groups, i.e. by substitution of framework …

An Algebraic Representation Of The Task Mapping For Parallel Computing, Yuxiang Gao Dec 2010

An Algebraic Representation Of The Task Mapping For Parallel Computing, Yuxiang Gao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Task mapping has been explored intensively by computer and computational scientists for the purposes of maximizing utilization of computing resources by reducing communication and load imbalance. Task mapping is known to be NP-complete as a combinatorial optimization problem and, thus, many efforts intending to search for optimal solutions are not succeeding. All proposed mapping models to date represent parallel computers and applications as graphs with the networking capability abstracted as a supply matrix whose entries represent the inter-node communication costs and the communication requirements of the sub-tasks abstracted as a demand matrix whose entries represent the inter-subtask communication loads. The …

Nucleocytoplasmic Transport Of The Transcription Factor Stat6, Hui-Chen Chen Dec 2010

Nucleocytoplasmic Transport Of The Transcription Factor Stat6, Hui-Chen Chen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 6 (STAT6) is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors that regulate cytokine signaling pathways. STATs are activated by tyrosine phosphorylation by receptor-associated Janus kinases (JAKs) and gain the ability to bind DNA. In this manner they transmit signals from the cell membrane to the nucleus to induce expression of genes involved in many biological functions. STAT6 needs to enter the nucleus for its function as a transcription factor. Therefore, regulation of STAT6 nuclear trafficking provides a mechanism to control specific gene expression. STAT6 is primarily activated by interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 …

Politics In Black And Brown: The Prospects For Political Alliances Between African Americans And Hispanic Americans, Tony Eugene Carey Jr Dec 2010

Politics In Black And Brown: The Prospects For Political Alliances Between African Americans And Hispanic Americans, Tony Eugene Carey Jr

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The similar economic circumstances of blacks and Latinos have led some researchers to argue they should engage in political alliances. Nevertheless, while their economic hardships should serve as a basis for cooperation, they may also lead to conflict, especially within contexts where both groups must compete for scarce material resources. To date, research indicates the influence of economic self-interestson political behavior is circumscribed. Furthermore, recent work shows intergroup attitudes are shaped by economic disparities between blacks and Latinos within their communities; however, the work on this subject has been limited. Using the 1993-4 Multi-City Study of Urban Inequality (MCSUI), I …

Implementing Tracecuts In The Interaspect Program Instrumentation Framework, Ketan Dixit Dec 2010

Implementing Tracecuts In The Interaspect Program Instrumentation Framework, Ketan Dixit

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As software grows in complexity, there is a need to check theruntime behavior of programs for potentially hazardous runtimestates, and take the appropriate action. The tracecut mechanism, which allows one to match sequences of runtime events against aproperty specification given as a regular expression, providesus with this functionality. In this thesis, we show how tracecut functionality can be appliedto C programs by making use of InterAspect, an aspect-orientedinstrumentation framework. InterAspect is a GCC compiler plug-inthat performs runtime instrumentation at the GIMPLE level, GCC'sintermediate representation. Our approach interprets a tracecutspecification given as a regular expression as a finite state machine, and generates the code …

Targeting And Roles Of Complexins In Zebrafish Ribbon-Containing Neurons, George Zanazzi Dec 2010

Targeting And Roles Of Complexins In Zebrafish Ribbon-Containing Neurons, George Zanazzi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The primary receptor cells of the visual, auditory, vestibular and lateral line systems encode a broad range of sensory information by modulating the tonic release of the neurotransmitter glutamate in response to graded changes in membrane potential. The output synapses of these neurons are marked by structures called synaptic ribbons, which tether a pool of releasable synaptic vesicles at the active zone. Despite the importance of the ribbon in synaptic transmission, the molecular mechanisms that govern the assembly and function of the exocytotic machinery in these terminals are poorly understood. We have identified a subfamily of SNARE complex regulators, composed …

Design And Optimization On Mobile Data Gathering In Wireless Sensor Networks, Miao Zhao Dec 2010

Design And Optimization On Mobile Data Gathering In Wireless Sensor Networks, Miao Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as a new information-gathering paradigm for taking spatial and temporal measurements of a given set of real-word parameters. In these applications, sensors monitor the environment and route their sensing data back to a static data sink. As the routing task depends purely on sensors themselves, the sensors near the sink need to relay much more packets than the sensors far away from the sink. As the result, it would incur substantial and non-uniform energy consumption among sensors. Therefore, how to efficiently aggregate the information from scattered sensors, generally referred to as data gathering, is …

Statistical Modeling For Multiplex Rnai Screen Data Analysis, Jianping Zhang Dec 2010

Statistical Modeling For Multiplex Rnai Screen Data Analysis, Jianping Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Multiplex RNAi screen is an emerging tool for functional genomics. Most analysis methods presently available for Multiplex RNAi screen are based on single hairpin data. These approaches have serious limitations. They do not account for the redundancies in genome-scale libraries. Thus it is difficult to detect genes with modest but consistent effect. In addition, contradictory conclusions might be reached based on enriched and depleted hairpins for the same gene. Therefore, we propose the RNAi Set Enrichment Analysis (RSEA) framework based on the gene set enrichment analysis framework that will take multiple hairpins into consideration in accessing the gene effect on …

Classification Problems For Mdps And Optimal Customer Admission To M/M/K/N Queues, Fenghsu Yang Dec 2010

Classification Problems For Mdps And Optimal Customer Admission To M/M/K/N Queues, Fenghsu Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation addresses the unichain classification problem for any finite Markov decision process (MDP) with a recurrent or stopping state and the optimal admission problem for an M/M/k/N controlled queue with holding costs. In the first chapter, we study the unichain classification problem for MDPs. The unichain classification problem is to detect whether an MDP with finite states and actions is unichain or not. This problem has been proven to be NP-hard. We study this problem while an MDP contains a state which is either recurrent under all deterministic policies or absorbing under some action. We introduce the definitions of …

Characteristics Of Coherent Fiber Optics Imaging Bundle After High Power Transmission, Shih Hsi Yen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis presents a comparative experimental characterization of a coherent fiber optics imaging bundle or coherent fiber bundle (CFB) before and after exposure to high energy density pulses (> 1k J/cm2). A Fujikura FIGH-30-850N ultra-thin imaging fiber with 30,000 individual optical fiber filaments, packed into a 780 um spot, was tested. Two fiber-coupled laser diodes, operating at a wavelength of 818 nm and 830nm respectively, provided the high power excitation source for the experiments. Analysis done using visual inspection and modulation transfer function techniques revealed that the laser induced fiber damage threshold (LIFDT) of the CFB is greater than 11k …

Performance Evaluation And Characterization Of Metallic Bipolar Plates In A Proton Exchange Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cell, Yue Hung Dec 2010

Performance Evaluation And Characterization Of Metallic Bipolar Plates In A Proton Exchange Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cell, Yue Hung

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Bipolar plate and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) are the two most repeated components of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack. Bipolar plates comprise more than 60% of the weight and account for 30% of the total cost of a fuel cell stack. The bipolar plates perform as current conductors between cells, provide conduits for reactant gases, facilitate water and thermal management through the cell, and constitute the backbone of a power stack. In addition, bipolar plates must have excellent corrosion resistance to withstand the highly corrosive environment inside the fuel cell, and they must maintain low interfacial contact …

Low-Level Vibrations Maintain The Intervertebral Disc During Unloading, Nilsson Holguin Dec 2010

Low-Level Vibrations Maintain The Intervertebral Disc During Unloading, Nilsson Holguin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Changes in intervertebral disc (IVD) biochemistry, morphology and mechanics have been characterized only incompletely in the rat hindlimb unloading (HU) model. Although exposure to chronic vibrations can be damaging, low-magnitude vibrations can attenuate the geometric changes of the IVD due to altered spinal loading. Here, we tested the hypothesis that low-magnitude, high-frequency vibrations will mitigate the hypotrophy, biochemical degradation and deconditioning of the IVD during HU. When applied as whole-body vibrations through all four paws, Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to HU and exposed to daily periods (15min/d) of either ambulatory activities (HU+AMB) or whole body vibrations superimposed upon ambulation (HU+WBV; …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Dichelesthium oblongum belongs to the family Dichelesthiidae, within the Suborder Siphonostomatoida, subclass Copepoda (Kabata 1979; Huys and Boxshall 1991). A description of the life cycle and the morphology of its developmental stages is described and compared with that of other organisms within this family and suborder. As expected within the Dichelesthiidae, Dichelesthium oblongum, life cycle appears to consist of nine stages, from nauplius 1 to adult. Sexes are easily distinguished from the 1st copepodid stage on the host through adulthood. General trends include the development of the lateral process on the endopod of the second leg on the male, the …

Local Adaptation Along A Latitudinal Gradient In Pacific Versus Atlantic-Coast Fishes, Elizabeth Ellen Brown Dec 2010

Local Adaptation Along A Latitudinal Gradient In Pacific Versus Atlantic-Coast Fishes, Elizabeth Ellen Brown

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Understanding how species adapt to spatial climate gradients can provide clues to potential evolutionary responses to climate change. Species distributed across broad environmental gradients, such as those that occur along latitudes or altitudes, often exhibit adaptive genetic variation. However, little attention has been given to how the type of environmental gradient shapes adaptive responses. To provide insight into this, local adaptation is compared in related fish species across two very different environmental gradients: the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America. Local adaptation is first examined in the California grunion (Leuresthes tenuis) and then results are compared to previous work …

Novel Nonparametric Approaches To Stock Assessment And Regime Shift Prediction, Charles Thomas Perretti Dec 2010

Novel Nonparametric Approaches To Stock Assessment And Regime Shift Prediction, Charles Thomas Perretti

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ecosystem dynamics are often complex, nonlinear, and characterized by criticalthresholds or regime changes. Despite these difficulties, resource managers mustaccurately forecast species abundance and anticipate impending regime shifts in order toimplement sustainable management plans. In the first part of this thesis I explicitly describe a nonparametric method formultivariate forecasting which I call the MS-Map and evaluate its performance relative toa suite of parametric models. I found that, in the presence of noise, it is often possible toobtain more accurate forecasts from the MS-Map than from the model that was used togenerate the data. The inclusion of additional species yielded a large …

Investigation Of Factors Involved In The Interaction Between Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx) And Its Host, The Hard Clam Mercenaria Mercenaria, Mickael Perrigault Dec 2010

Investigation Of Factors Involved In The Interaction Between Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx) And Its Host, The Hard Clam Mercenaria Mercenaria, Mickael Perrigault

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

QPX (Quahog parasite unknown) is a protistan parasite affecting the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria along the Northeastern coast of the United States. The geographic distribution and occurrence of disease epizootics suggests the involvement of environmental parameters and host genotype in disease development. Field investigations and laboratory transmission studies revealed some variations in the susceptibility of different hard clam stocks to QPX infection. Histological observations demonstrated that clams mount marked inflammatory responses against the infection that can sometimes lead to the healing of infected individuals. This study investigated host-pathogen interactions in QPX disease by studying individual components of the tripartite interaction: …

Visual Game Tuning: Integrating Interactive Visualizations Into Game Development, Markus Elliot Lacay Dec 2010

Visual Game Tuning: Integrating Interactive Visualizations Into Game Development, Markus Elliot Lacay

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Game development is a rapidly evolving area of study that blends together a broad spectrum of technical and creative influences. Through their systematic use of rules, mechanics and multimedia assets, games can be thought of as an increasingly complex set of multivariate state data. Often, the interactions between these variable sets and their affect on game behavior are not readily apparent to the system architects at the time of development. These details can easily be overlooked until much later in the development cycle, when the refactoring of their implementations can result in significant overhead. To combat this problem project managers …

Exploring Fertility Expectations, Miranda Annette Moore Dec 2010

Exploring Fertility Expectations, Miranda Annette Moore

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The past few decades have seen an incredible increase in the use of panel data to answer micro level questions in a variety of settings. This new longitudinal data has allowed economists to empirically explore many theoretical economic models. One area that has not been as extensively explored is the economics of fertility expectations. This paper uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) to explore the fertility expectations of a cohort of women who were 14 to 21 years old in 1979.We begin by investigating the impact of changes in the woman's socioeconomic status on the …

Shinobi Uta is a song cycle in five movements for soprano, baritone, and chamber orchestra based on the story of Tosa Nikki. The first literary work in Japanese history conveyed in the form of a diary, Tosa Nikki was written by one of the most renowned poets and writers of its time, Tsurayuki Kino, in 935. His refined skills in Japanese and Chinese poetry were highly acknowledged by the Japanese imperial court during the Heian Period (794-1185). His name often appears in many of the early Japanese anthologies of poetry including the first of its kind called Kokin Wakashu, for …

Interferon-Gamma Fosters A Shift From Acute To Chronic Inflammation In Lyme Disease, Gregory John Sabino Dec 2010

Interferon-Gamma Fosters A Shift From Acute To Chronic Inflammation In Lyme Disease, Gregory John Sabino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Borrelia burgdorferi is an extracellular bacterium that causes Lyme disease, an inflammatory, multi-systemic ailment. Interferon-γ (IFNγ) is present in lesions of human Lyme disease and positively correlates with severity of illness. Endothelial cells, which line the vasculature, mediate recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection and inflammation. To determine whether IFNγ contributes to development of Lyme disease through its actions on endothelium, cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were exposed to B. burgdorferi, IFNγ, or the two stimuli together. Treatment of HUVEC with both stimuli enhanced the transendothelial migration of monocytes and diminished that of natural killer cells, …

Nonlinear Modeling On Viscoelastic Contact Interface: Theoretical Study And Experimental Validation, Chia-Hung Dylan Tsai Dec 2010

Nonlinear Modeling On Viscoelastic Contact Interface: Theoretical Study And Experimental Validation, Chia-Hung Dylan Tsai

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Viscoelasticity is a phenomenon of time-dependent strain and/or stress in elastic solids. Various contact interfaces with anthropomorphic end-effectors and polymeric solids found in robots and manipulators are intrinsically viscoelastic. It is therefore important to model such behavior and to study the effects of such time-dependent strain and stress on the stability and sustainability of grasping and manipulation. Both theoretical modeling and experimental study are presented in this dissertation. In theoretical modeling, a new nonlinear latency model is proposed for the application of contact interface involving viscoelasticity in robotics. Latency model can describe well various features of viscoelastic materials, such as …

Phosphorus Export From A Restored Wetland Ecosystem In Response To Natural And Experimental Hydrologic Fluctuations, Marcelo Ardón, Shaena Montanari, Jennifer L. Morse, Martin W. Doyle, Emily S. Bernhardt

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wetland restoration is a commonly used approach to reduce nutrient loading to freshwater and coastal ecosystems, with many wetland restoration efforts occurring in former agricultural fields. Restored wetlands are expected to be effective at retaining or removing both nitrogen and phosphorus (P), yet restoring wetland hydrology to former agricultural fields can lead to the release of legacy fertilizer P. Here, we examined P cycling and export following rewetting of the Timberlake Restoration Project, a 440 ha restored riverine wetland complex in the coastal plain of North Carolina. We also compared P cycling within the restored wetland to two minimally disturbed …
