Corporate Social Responsibility In The Oil And Gas Industry: The Importance Of Reputational Risk, David B. Spence Dec 2010

Corporate Social Responsibility In The Oil And Gas Industry: The Importance Of Reputational Risk, David B. Spence

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Modern oil and gas production takes place in environments that are increasingly challenging, environments that pose very high levels of technical risk, as well as political, social, environmental, heal and safety risks. The people of the oil-rich nations of the world are growing more assertive politically and more sensitive to the environmental, health, and safety risks posed by oil and gas development. Governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and local people seek the means to control oil and gas development so as to minimize the risk of harm and provide redress in the event harm is done. Oil and gas companies have …

Of Nesting Dolls And Trojan Horses: A Survey Of Legal And Policy Issues Attendant To Vehicle-To-Grid Battery Electric Vehicles, Bryan Lamble

Chicago-Kent Law Review

2010 will not be remembered as the year when the domestic energy landscape changed, dominated as it was by environmental catastrophe and human calamity and tragedy caused by the search for and extraction of traditional fossil fuels. In fact, clean(er) energy and greater efficiency seem, in some ways, to be less of a reality at the beginning of the second decade of the twenty-first century than many would have predicted (and hoped). Furthermore, a contentious mid-term election season (stoked by fears of massive deficits, rising national debt and ballooning government) dominated the headlines at the expense of what could prove …

Biotech Biofuels: How Patents May Save Biofuels And Create Empires, Adam Wolek Dec 2010

Biotech Biofuels: How Patents May Save Biofuels And Create Empires, Adam Wolek

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The United States' primary transportation energy sources are fossil fuels, namely, gasoline and diesel. These products have high environmental, security, and financial costs. A strong emphasis has been placed on biofuels, especially ethanol and biodiesel, to lessen reliance on fossil fuels. Historically, high production costs, lack of infrastructure, return on investment anxieties, and concerns about scaling-up production have slowed the development of these alternative technologies. Today, biotechnological solutions are lowering productions costs and making large scale production more economically feasible. Patents can lessen anxieties about investment as they can provide longer-term protection and market exclusivity for patented technologies. As biofuels …

Twittering Away The Right Of Publicity: Personality Rights And Celebrity Impersonation On Social Networking Websites, Andrew M. Jung Dec 2010

Twittering Away The Right Of Publicity: Personality Rights And Celebrity Impersonation On Social Networking Websites, Andrew M. Jung

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Within the past couple of years, social networking websites have become an immensely popular destination for people from all walks of life. Websites like Facebook and Twitter now count tens of millions of worldwide users, including world leaders and a number of celebrities. Eventually, users realized that social networking websites lent themselves to the quick and easy impersonation of celebrities through the creation of fake social networking accounts, often as a form of parody. One subject of such impersonation was professional baseball manager Tony La Russa, who took the then-unprecedented step of suing his impersonators and Twitter over the incident. …

Increasing Self-Empowerment Related To Depression Among Court-Involved Youth: The Moods Matter Project, Nancy G. Calley, Lisa D. Hawley Dec 2010

Increasing Self-Empowerment Related To Depression Among Court-Involved Youth: The Moods Matter Project, Nancy G. Calley, Lisa D. Hawley

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

An empirically-guided program designed to empower at-risk youth through increased knowledge of depression and prevention resources was developed and implemented. Ninety-three court-involved adolescents participated in the Moods Matter project, a four-part psycho-educational group experience rooted in the principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Addressing the disproportionate incidence of depression among court-involved youth and the need for short-term interventions that promote self-empowerment, the program was developed specifically for court-involved youth in out of home placement. The results of this exploratory pilot study found significant gains among participants related to increased knowledge of depression. Additionally, all participants successfully completed an individualized …

Impacts Of Low-Speed Vehicles On Transportation Infrastructure And Safety, Katharine M. Hunter-Zaworski, Linda Cornell Dec 2010

Impacts Of Low-Speed Vehicles On Transportation Infrastructure And Safety, Katharine M. Hunter-Zaworski, Linda Cornell

TREC Final Reports

There are increasing numbers of low-speed electric vehicles (LSVs) on public roadways. These vehicles are designed to be used within protected environments and on roadways with a maximum posted speed of 25 mph. Currently these vehicles are not subject to the same federal requirements for occupant protection as passenger cars. This research project investigated safety standards, operating regulations, and LSV manufacturer materials from sources around the world. The purpose of the research was to determine positive and negative impacts that LSVs, including Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) and Medium Speed Electric Vehicles (MSEVs), are likely to have for the Oregon Department …

Antidiscrimination Rights Of Contingent Workers In The United States, Hyun Joo Kang Dec 2010

Antidiscrimination Rights Of Contingent Workers In The United States, Hyun Joo Kang

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits an employer's discriminatory employment practices against an employee on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, or national origin. Most contingent workers in the United States are faced with discriminatory employment practices, such as low wages and low or no benefits, and they are disproportionately women and minorities. Title VII is the focal point, but Title VII has not functioned as a remedy for contingent workers. This dissertation examines why contingent workers suffer discrimination, despite Title VII, and suggests possible solutions.

In the United States, the distinctive interpretation of laws …

Using No-Show Modeling To Improve Clinic Performance, Laura P. Sands, Joanne K Daggy, Mark Lawley, Deanna Willis, Debra Thayer, Christopher Suelzer, Po-Ching C. Delaurentis, Ayten Turkan, Santanu Chakraborty Dec 2010

Using No-Show Modeling To Improve Clinic Performance, Laura P. Sands, Joanne K Daggy, Mark Lawley, Deanna Willis, Debra Thayer, Christopher Suelzer, Po-Ching C. Delaurentis, Ayten Turkan, Santanu Chakraborty

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

‘No-shows’ or missed appointments result in under-utilized clinic capacity. We develop a logistic regression model using electronic medical records to estimate patients’ no-show probabilities and illustrate the use of the estimates in creating clinic schedules that maximize clinic capacity utilization while maintaining small patient waiting times and clinic overtime costs. This study used information on scheduled outpatient appointments collected over a three-year period at a Veterans Affairs medical center. The call-in process for 400 clinic days was simulated and for each day two schedules were created: the traditional method that assigned one patient per appointment slot, and the proposed method …

Modeling The Random Component Of Manufacturing Yield Of Integrated Circuits., David L. Farnsworth, Michael E. Long Dec 2010

Modeling The Random Component Of Manufacturing Yield Of Integrated Circuits., David L. Farnsworth, Michael E. Long

Articles

A model is created for the number of integrated circuits that are good from each wafer on which they are fabricated. The goal is to separate the random or common cause loss from the systematic or special loss. The random loss from this type of process is modeled so that false alarms indicating systematic loss are less likely to occur and so that the structure of the systematic loss can be determined.

Generalized Twisted Quantum Doubles And The Mckay Correspondence, Christopher D. Goff, Geoffrey Mason Dec 2010

Generalized Twisted Quantum Doubles And The Mckay Correspondence, Christopher D. Goff, Geoffrey Mason

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

We consider a class of quasiHopf algebras which we call generalized twisted quantum doubles. They are abelian extensions H=C[G¯]∗⋈C[G] (G is a finite group, G¯ a homomorphic image, and * denotes the dual algebra), possibly twisted by a 3-cocycle, and are a natural generalization of the twisted quantum double construction of Dijkgraaf, Pasquier and Roche. We show that if G is a subgroup of SU2(C) then H exhibits an orbifold McKay Correspondence: certain fusion rules of H define a graph with connected components indexed by conjugacy classes of G¯, each connected component being an extended affine Diagram of …

Features Extraction Using Random Matrix Theory., Viktoria Borisovna Rojkova Dec 2010

Features Extraction Using Random Matrix Theory., Viktoria Borisovna Rojkova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Representing the complex data in a concise and accurate way is a special stage in data mining methodology. Redundant and noisy data affects generalization power of any classification algorithm, undermines the results of any clustering algorithm and finally encumbers the monitoring of large dynamic systems. This work provides several efficient approaches to all aforementioned sides of the analysis. We established, that notable difference can be made, if the results from the theory of ensembles of random matrices are employed. Particularly important result of our study is a discovered family of methods based on projecting the data set on different subsets …

Testing The Use Of Molluscs To Infer Climate With Special Reference To The Late Cenozoic Molluscs Of The Meade Basin, Southwest Kansas., Brian William Steffen 1975- Dec 2010

Testing The Use Of Molluscs To Infer Climate With Special Reference To The Late Cenozoic Molluscs Of The Meade Basin, Southwest Kansas., Brian William Steffen 1975-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-six fossil assemblages of land and freshwater molluscs from the Pliocene to the present, were collected from locations near the town of Meade, Kansas, U.S.A. and were analyzed (along with the extant molluscan fauna of Meade County, Kansas) to look for changes in molluscan diversity through time. The fossil assemblages were analyzed for two reasons: I) to test the hypothesis that diversity (measured as taxonomic richness, dominance, turnover and habitat type) did not change through the five million years of this study (HOI); and 2) to test the hypothesis that there is no relationship between the taxonomic composition of a …

School-Based Decision Making (Sbdm) Councils And Their Efficacy And Productivity As Perceived By Council Members., Shawna Shrout Stenton 1976-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the perceptions of Kentucky SBDM council members concerning the productivity and efficacy of the councils. The major variables studied were council member position, council member demographic characteristics, perceived efficacy, and perceived productivity. The research data came from an already completed field survey. This study used the methods of descriptive analysis, causal-comparative analysis, and correlational/predictive research. Statistical procedures included calculation of means and standard deviations, as well as multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), ordinary least squares multiple regression, and random effects analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of the study showed that, in general, council members had a …

Data Mining And Analysis Of Lung Cancer Data., Guoxin Tang Dec 2010

Data Mining And Analysis Of Lung Cancer Data., Guoxin Tang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the world, with more than 1.3 million deaths worldwide per year. However, because of a lack of effective tools to diagnose Lung Cancer, more than half of all cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when surgical resection is unlikely to be feasible. The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between patient outcomes and conditions of the patients undergoing different treatments for lung cancer and to develop models to predict the mortality of lung cancer. This study will identify the demographic, finance, …

Factors Affecting Nurse Educators' Decision To Teach., Linda J. Thomas 1946- Dec 2010

Factors Affecting Nurse Educators' Decision To Teach., Linda J. Thomas 1946-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of nursing currently faces a shortage of both nurses and nursing faculty. Yet, little is known about why clinical nurses opt to become nursing faculty. Qualitative investigations into this phenomenon are particularly rare. This study addressed these gaps in the context of career choice of faculty associate degree nursing (ADN) programs. The qualitative analysis was guided by Astin's (1984) psychosocial model of career choice. The central research question was, "What factors influence the career choice of nurse educators currently teaching in Kentucky associated degree nursing programs?" Faculty from the 20 ADN programs in public community colleges and 4-year …

Messianic Light : Utopian Discourse In The Work Of Theodor W. Adorno, Luce Irigaray And Giorgio Agamben., Heather Anne Thiessen 1956- Dec 2010

Messianic Light : Utopian Discourse In The Work Of Theodor W. Adorno, Luce Irigaray And Giorgio Agamben., Heather Anne Thiessen 1956-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What is the idea that "utopia" names? How can discourse represent that idea? Setting aside temporarily deeper problems with the idea of representation, and focusing on how a complex philosophical discourse might approach the problem of conveying or representing a large, only fairly precise, and important idea is the question of this dissertation. It ultimately answers that question obliquely, by focusing on the way the utopian discourse present in the work of three late 20th century philosophers, Theodor W. Adorno, Luce Irigaray, and Giorgio Agamben, addresses a subject position that can be named a "subject of possibility." How this subject …

Postwar Sierra Leone : Are Programs Of Reconstruction Addressing The Causes Of War?, Lovetta Anita Thompson 1985- Dec 2010

Postwar Sierra Leone : Are Programs Of Reconstruction Addressing The Causes Of War?, Lovetta Anita Thompson 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This multilayered study is an appraisal of some of the ongoing post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Sierra Leone in light of the causes of the conflict, which lasted from 1991-2002. It begins by providing a critical examination of the historical antecedents leading up to the war. The problems of colonialism which brought together different nationalities under one political umbrella by force of arm, along with other motley of issues such as corrupt leadership and inter-ethnic violence led to the outbreak of war in 1991. Although different studies have discussed these factors, very few, if any, have tried to make a connection …
