Beliefs About Alcohol And The College Experience As Moderators Of The Effects Of Perceived Drinking Norms On Student Alcohol Use, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak Dec 2010

Beliefs About Alcohol And The College Experience As Moderators Of The Effects Of Perceived Drinking Norms On Student Alcohol Use, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Many students view the abuse of alcohol as integral to the student role. Thus, they feel entitled to drink heavily without sanction. OLS regression was used to assess the extent to which these beliefs about alcohol and the college experience moderate the effects of descriptive and injunctive campus drinking norms on students’ levels of alcohol consumption. Overall, respondents who perceived that same-sex students on their campus drank heavily tended to drink heavily themselves. This relationship was, however, strongest among individuals who viewed the abuse of alcohol as part of being a student. Although general injunctive norms were not themselves associated …

Transparency Soup: The Acta Negotiating Process And "Black Box" Lawmaking, David S. Levine Dec 2010

Transparency Soup: The Acta Negotiating Process And "Black Box" Lawmaking, David S. Levine

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

The negotiations of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) have been marred by a level of attempted secrecy heretofore unseen in international intellectual property lawmaking. Simultaneously, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has been used in several significant national contexts to prevent the disclosure of data and information in ways that call into question its efficacy as an effective regulation of governmental knowledge. This paper seeks to tie together these two recent developments in order to (a) prevent future international intellectual property law negotiations from being unduly secret and (b) encourage Congress to consider reforming FOIA in light of current public …

Liberalization Without A Regulator. The Rail Freight Transport Market In Poland In The Years 1996-2009, Marcin Król Dec 2010

Liberalization Without A Regulator. The Rail Freight Transport Market In Poland In The Years 1996-2009, Marcin Król

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This article focuses on the liberalization process of the railway freight transport market in Poland between 1997 and 2009. It shows that the increase in traffic and the fall in prices that occurred in this period took place not because of ‘effective regulation’ but despite its absence. This can indicate that introducing competition in railway freight transport could be profitable where there is significant demand for bulk and containers freight services and the railway infrastructure is well-developed.

Application Of Double Sampling To Combine Measured And Imputed Genotype Data In Genetic Association Studies, Qilong Yuan Dec 2010

Application Of Double Sampling To Combine Measured And Imputed Genotype Data In Genetic Association Studies, Qilong Yuan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Genotype imputation provides an essential technique for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with hundreds of thousands of SNPs. Understanding the connection between imputation inconsistencies and the power to detect association at imputed markers or the disease genes close to them is important for the optimal design of imputation-based GWAS since genotype misclassification can significantly decrease statistical power to detect association. Double sampling of genotypes is a statistical procedure in which a portion of subjects receive a second and more precise genotyping. This paper applies the likelihood ratio test allowing for errors (LRT-AE), which incorporates double sample information for genotypes on a …

The Specific Interactions Between Dendritic Cells And Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Amir Emanuel Zeituni Dec 2010

The Specific Interactions Between Dendritic Cells And Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Amir Emanuel Zeituni

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The broad objective of this dissertation is to elucidate the specific interactions between Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and dendritic cells (DCs). P. gingivalis is a black pigmented, anaerobic, Gram-negative bacterium that is associated with most cases of chronic periodontitis. P. gingivalis expresses a myriad of virulence factors, most notably, fimbrial adhesins that enable it to bind to and invade host epithelial cells, endothelial cells, macrophages and DCs. While much is known about the 41 kDa major fimbria adhesins of P. gingivalis, the minor fimbriae have received little attention. The results presented here suggest that the minor fimbriae may serve as …

Ecological Effects Of Benthic Suspension Feeding On Plankton Community Structure In Coastal Systems, Jer¢Nimo Pan Dec 2010

Ecological Effects Of Benthic Suspension Feeding On Plankton Community Structure In Coastal Systems, Jer¢Nimo Pan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explored biological benthic-pelagic coupling in model shallow systems (coastal lagoons) currently at alternative ecological states, most likely the product of intense anthropogenic exploitation of estuarine resources (extractive shellfisheries). Currently, dominant grazers of algae include planktonic microorganisms (nanoflagellates, heterotrophic dinoflagellates, ciliates) instead of significant filtration by macrobenthos. The research focused on the role of benthic suspension-feeding animals in modulating composition, trophic structure, and ecological processes in the planktonic food web at current and hypothetically-increased population densities that would result from restoration.Firstly, laboratory experiments explored the potential of marine mussels (Geukensia demissa, Mytilus edulis) and clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) in grazing …

Overall Properties Of Piezoelectric Particulate Composites: Homogenization Estimates And Finite-Element Simulations, Sumantu Iyer Dec 2010

Overall Properties Of Piezoelectric Particulate Composites: Homogenization Estimates And Finite-Element Simulations, Sumantu Iyer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work presents a) an analytic model based on homogenizationestimates to obtain explicit solutions for the effective properties ofparticulate piezoelectric composites and b) a three-dimensionalfinite-element model to compare finite-element results and study thebehaviour of porous piezoelectric composites with four differentgeometric configurations. The analytic model extends the Suquet[29] estimates method to the piezoelectric domain where acomplete set of electromechanical constants are obtained for threepiezoelectric ceramics belonging to different symmetry classes.Specific results are generated for the cases of a square arrangementof cylindrical pores, where the alignment of the pores is in thedirection of poling of the matrix phase and a cubic arrangement …

Mechanism Of Reversion Of Calcium-Induced Differentiation In Keratinocytes, Azadeh Jadali Dec 2010

Mechanism Of Reversion Of Calcium-Induced Differentiation In Keratinocytes, Azadeh Jadali

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Terminal differentiation defines cells that permanently exit the cell cycle in the process of specialization. Under some circumstances, however, this process is reversed as demonstrated by the ability of differentiated keratinocytes to form hair bearing skin epithelia when transplanted onto a suitable environment. To gain insights into the mechanism of reversion of keratinocyte differentiation, a well characterized culture of mouse keratinocytes, in which calcium (Ca2+) concentrations above 0.1 mM induce differentiation was used. A low Ca2+ switch in differentiated cultures triggered culture-wide morphological and biochemical changes indicated by re-initiation of proliferation, de-repression of cyclin D1, and acquisition of basal cell-like …

O Frabjous Day, Ilari Kaila Dec 2010

O Frabjous Day, Ilari Kaila

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

O Frabjous Day is a composition for symphony orchestra (2-2-2-2, 4-2-2-1, timp, 3perc, pno, hp, strings, with standard doublings). The duration is approximately 13 minutes. The piece is based on the idea of setting large-scale musical elements in counterpoint with one another. A sequence of independent musical ideas are introduced, with contrasting meters, tempi, orchestral colors, and textures. At the climax, after all these different musics have been spun out and developed in various ways, they are heard simultaneously. While they retain their independent nature, and are out of synch with each other in terms of meter, tempo, and phrasing, they …

Synthesis Of Novel Fused Tricyclic And Tetracyclic Skeletons Through Rh(I)-Catalyzed [2+2+2+1] Cycloaddition Of Enediyne Derivatives With Carbon Monoxide, Joseph Junior Kaloko

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Natural products (NP) and their metabolites isolated from diverse origins have been an extraordinary source of active pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and other applications. Often, NP also serve as templates to obtain more potent and selective agents through structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies. A ubiquitous feature of NP and their metabolites is that they often contain fascinating fused-ring skeletons. Unfortunately, the vast majority of NP cannot be isolated in large quantities from their natural source. Consequently, the need to develop highly efficient synthetic methods that provide access to fused ring-skeletons with handles for further modification is necessary. Transition metal-catalyzed carbocyclization and cycloaddition reactions …

Its main features include a custom scripting language, a fully customizable graphical user interface, wireless and remote control, and a terminal-based …

Analysis Of Single And Dual Under-Expanded, Rarefied Jets, Wenhai Li Dec 2010

Analysis Of Single And Dual Under-Expanded, Rarefied Jets, Wenhai Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A numerical study, using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) approach, of the interaction effects between two identical sonic under-expanded nitrogen jets under rarefied conditions is reported. In this paper, the effects of the jet stagnation Knudsen number (Kns), the ratio of the stagnation-to-background pressure (Ps/Pb), and the distance between the jet orifices (L/D) were investigated for a range of these parameters. The background pressure has a very significant effect on the physics of flow, and the interactions between the two jets affect the location of the Mach disks for both the primary and …

Multinuclear Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Phosphate Uptake By Aluminum (Hydr)Oxides, Wei Li Dec 2010

Multinuclear Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Phosphate Uptake By Aluminum (Hydr)Oxides, Wei Li

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth and agriculture. In aqueous environments, interaction of dissolved phosphate with the surfaces of Al oxyhydroxides and clays is important for controlling its transport, fate and bioavailability. Understanding the reaction mechanisms responsible for phosphate uptake at the molecular level can provide significant insight and improved prediction of phosphate uptake behavior, leading to better strategies for phosphate fertilizationand regulation. In this research, I examined the specific adsorption of phosphate on boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and other Al (hydr)oxides by combining mainly batch sorption techniques, 31P solid-state NMR spectroscopy, quantum chemical calculations and Fouriertransform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. …

The Role Of Mesd In Wnt Signaling And Lipoprotein Metabolism, Janet Lighthouse Dec 2010

The Role Of Mesd In Wnt Signaling And Lipoprotein Metabolism, Janet Lighthouse

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Deletion of the mesoderm development (Mesd) gene region blocks gastrulation and mesoderm differentiation in mice. In cell culture, MESD is required for the localization of WNT co-receptors LRP5/6 to the cell membrane. For this reason, loss of LRP5/6 from the cell surface in Mesd mutants likely prevents WNT signaling and is responsible for the polarity defects observed in Mesd-deficient embryos. In this study, we generated a targeted Mesd knockout and verified that loss of Mesd blocks WNT signaling in vivo and mesoderm differentiation. We also identified essential domains in the MESD protein, and demonstrated that MESD function in vitro was …

Functional Analysis Of The Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Family In Mammary Epithelial Cell Models Of Breast Cancer, Guang Lin Dec 2010

Functional Analysis Of The Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Family In Mammary Epithelial Cell Models Of Breast Cancer, Guang Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) superfamily of enzymes is encoded by ~100 genes. In coordinating with protein tyrosine kinases (PTK), they regulate signaling pathways that control a broad spectrum of fundamental physiological processes and their disruption underlie human diseases. To date, however, the functional analysis of PTPs is not as advanced as for PTKs. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this dissertation is to develop the tools for global analysis of the function of PTPs through RNAi-mediated loss-of-function screens. I constructed a PTP short-hairpin RNA (shRNA) library, which contains ~5 shRNAs specifically designed to target each of the PTPs. In collaboration …

Finding Highly Probable(Robust) Paths In The Presence Of Uncertain Weather, Ashish Lohia Dec 2010

Finding Highly Probable(Robust) Paths In The Presence Of Uncertain Weather, Ashish Lohia

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Uncertain weather conditions is one of the biggest challenges faced by air traffic route management. The US airspace is constructed of virtual freeways and all flights have predetermined routes on which to fly, which have originated over years of work and experience. These flight routes are sometimes marred by bad weather conditions which force the pilots to take on alternative routes. It is not very difficult to come up which these alternates if the conditions are known in advance but the real challenge comes when they come up unexpectedly enroute.Stochastic weather conditions such as turbulance and icing are very difficult …

Sighing Into A League Of His Own: Rushdie's Use Of Camäes's Epic And Cervantes's Romance In The Moor's Last Sigh, Amanda M. Ponnwitz Dec 2010

Sighing Into A League Of His Own: Rushdie's Use Of Camäes's Epic And Cervantes's Romance In The Moor's Last Sigh, Amanda M. Ponnwitz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This paper provides an analysis of Salman Rushdie's The Moor's Last Sigh use Luis Vaz de Camäes's epic poem The Lusiads and Miguel de Cervantes's satiric romance Don Quixote. After a brief discussion of epic and romance, I trace Rushdie's use and re-use of various aspects from both of these works. A close reading of The Lusiads and The Moor's Last Sigh will show that in re-using Camäes's epic, Rushdie provides India with a nationalistic work and voice that reclaims India from her imperial past, while also providing a pluralist perspective for the world to learn from. Furthermore, an analysis …

Contributions Of The Inhibitor Of Kappa B Kinases (Ikks) In Macrophages And Neutrophils After Francisella Tularensis Live Vaccine Strain (Lvs) Infection., Sylvia Samaniego

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The immune system is a complex network of cells regulated by a number of signaling pathways to drive specific host defenses against invading pathogens. The NF-&kappaB (nuclear factor of the kappa light chain enhancer in B cells) family of inducible transcription factors is a critical regulator of many innate and adaptive immune responses. NF-&kappaB activation by several receptors converges upon two upstream kinases, IKK&alpha and IKK&beta, that regulate gene induction. Many studies report that IKK&beta is the critical kinase involved in NF--&kappaB activation, although at a transcriptional level, both kinases are needed to obtain the full spectrum of gene induction. …
