Performance Enhancement Of Bridge Bracing Under Service And Extreme Loads, Peter Dusicka, Max Taylor Stephens, Kate Fox-Lent Dec 2010

Performance Enhancement Of Bridge Bracing Under Service And Extreme Loads, Peter Dusicka, Max Taylor Stephens, Kate Fox-Lent

TREC Final Reports

As truck loads continue to get bigger, the demand on many aging bridges increases. Slender steel structural elements widely used in bridge superstructures and braced substructures to resist these loads are built primarily for tension, however, and can buckle under compressive loads. Portland State University associate professor Peter Dusicka set out to develop and demonstrate the concept of retrofitting bridge brace elements with fiber reinforced composites in order to provide restraint against buckling. The advanced materials consisted of a combination of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite pultruded sections and wet lay-up wraps intended to be applied in the field. This …

Design Decisions Under Risk And Uncertainty, Sravya Thoomu Dec 2010

Design Decisions Under Risk And Uncertainty, Sravya Thoomu

All Theses

In the contemporary world of engineering, engineers strive towards designing reliable and robust artifacts while considering and attempting to control manufacturing costs. In due course they have to deal with some sort of uncertainty. Many aspects of the design are the result of properties that are defined within some tolerances, of measurements that are appropriate, and of circumstances and environmental conditions that are out of their control. This uncertainty was typically handled by using factors of safety, and resulted in designs that may have been overly conservative. Therefore, understanding and handling the uncertainties is critical in improving the design, controlling …

What Brown Saw And You Can Too, Philip Pearle, Brian Collett, Kenneth Bart, David Bilderback, Dara Newman, D. Scott Samuels Dec 2010

What Brown Saw And You Can Too, Philip Pearle, Brian Collett, Kenneth Bart, David Bilderback, Dara Newman, D. Scott Samuels

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A discussion of Robert Brown’s original observations of particles ejected by pollen of the plant Clarkia pulchella undergoing what is now called Brownian motion is given. We consider the nature of those particles and how he misinterpreted the Airy disk of the smallest particles to be universal organic building blocks. Relevant qualitative and quantitative investigations with a modern microscope and with a “homemade” single lens microscope similar to Brown’s are presented.

How Proactive Measures Reduce Patient Handling Injuries Among Healthcare Workers In A Hospital Setting: A Systematic Review To Determine Best Practice, Kimberly A. Jefferson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this study is to determine the best proactive measures in a hospital setting to reduce patient handling injuries among healthcare workers. Improper patient handling techniques have been found to be a major cause of workplace injuries among health care workers in the hospital setting. A systematic review was performed to assess programs that have implemented various methods of improving patient handling techniques. There are numerous programs or components that were found to be successful in reducing patient handling injuries. Among these program components are lift teams, lifting equipment, ceiling lifts, education, training and an active multidisciplinary team. …

JHN Journal

The intensivist is the primary care physician of the ICU. Critically ill patients often have multiple acute and chronic illnesses requiring the careful integration of information and recommendations from multiple consultants. In addition to acting as a physician, intensivists commonly are administrators of an ICU. In 1992, the Society of Critical Care Medicine1 published its guidelines for the definition of an intensivist and the intensivist’s role in an ICU (Table 1).

Pekaresque Adventures: Aesthetics And Identity In "American Splendor", Tim Madigan Dec 2010

Pekaresque Adventures: Aesthetics And Identity In "American Splendor", Tim Madigan

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"When considering the ontological status of the comic book, it was once natural to think of superheroes battling all-powerful villains, Archie and Jughead battling wits with Principal Weatherbee, or Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig battling Elmer J. Fudd in the forest. In short, the assumption was that comic books were kids‘ stuff, and not to be taken seriously by world-weary adults. Much has changed in the last 20 or so years, with the rise of the so-called graphic novel, but many of these – including such seminal works as …

A Pioneer Of Urologic Surgery From A Small Town In Ontario, Canada: A Tribute To Abraham Groves (1847-1935)., Yves Caumartin, Vivian Mcalister, Patrick Luke

Data and Test Instruments

Background: Abraham Groves worked as a general practitioner and surgeon in the small town of Fergus, Ontario, Canada. Several priority claims have been attributed to Groves’ life in surgery, including aseptic surgery (1874), appendectomy (1883) and the use of surgical gloves (1885). He was also an early practitioner of urological surgery. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to describe and objectively assess his contributions as a pioneer in urological surgery. Methods: A systematic search of contemporary journals was made for articles by or about Groves. These articles and his 1934 autobiography were reviewed. The information was assessed not only …

Cosmopolitanism, Globalization And The Field Of Adolescent Literacy, Helen Harper, Thomas W. Bean, Judith Dunkerly

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

In this article we discuss the current nature and circumstances of cosmopolitanism and what it means to the field of adolescent literacy. Drawing on contemporary scholarship, cosmopolitanism is understood as: 1) the local experience or condition of globalization, what has been called ‘internal globalization,’ and, 2) as a disposition or sensibility that ensures productive and peaceful relations in light of globalization or any circumstance that creates dynamic and culturally diverse contexts. From a critical review of the key documents in the field, we argue that for many adolescents their lives and literacies now, and especially in the future, will be …

Learning In A Credit Crisis, Or A Crisis Of Credit? Microcredit Lending, The Grameen Bank, And Informal Learning, Robert Mcgray Dec 2010

Learning In A Credit Crisis, Or A Crisis Of Credit? Microcredit Lending, The Grameen Bank, And Informal Learning, Robert Mcgray

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Popular economic discourses have developed a lexicon which will often refer to economic downturns as a credit crisis. Kojin Karatani’s recent reworking of Marx’s analysis of the credit system however forces us to consider that credit itself may be the problem – a problem referred to here as the crisis of credit. This essay is a critical theoretical analysis of the way in which microcredit lending programs constrain informal learning so that people learn in a crisis of credit. After tracing the roots of microcredit to neoliberal gender reforms, I identify and critique three underlying justifications of the crisis of …
