Supramolecular Paths For The Synthesis Of Composite Hollow Particles, Alex Couzis Dec 2010

Supramolecular Paths For The Synthesis Of Composite Hollow Particles, Alex Couzis

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Hollow and porous micro/nanostructures are of great interest in many current and emerging areas of technology; their interior space can be used for storage, or a reaction chamber that can encapsulate various substances, and the shell structure contains paths affording control release systems. As a result these materials have had great impact in many technological areas such as the encapsulation and controlled release of substances (e.g., drugs, genes, dyes, inks, cosmetics, pesticides, food stuffs), protection of biologically active species, removal of pollutants, catalysis, and sensing.

Hollow silica nanospheres were synthesized using a two-step sacrificial templating technique. The template used consisted …

As An Educator And Educational Researcher, How Do I Improve What I Am Doing And Contribute To Educational Theories That Carry Hope For The Future Of Humanity?, Jack Whitehead Dec 2010

As An Educator And Educational Researcher, How Do I Improve What I Am Doing And Contribute To Educational Theories That Carry Hope For The Future Of Humanity?, Jack Whitehead

i.e.: inquiry in education

What I want to share in this contribution to education inquiry are some insights from my educational research programme between 1973-2010 about the kind of educational theories that can explain the educational influence of an individual in their own learning, in the learning of others and in the learning of the social formations in which we live and work. These insights are focused on: i) The desire of educators to account to themselves and others for living as fully as possible the ontological values they use to give meaning and purpose to their lives in their vocation of education. ii) …

Going Green Down Under: Environmental Communication And Green Product Marketing In The South Eastern Australian Wine Industry, Kevin Michael Visconti Dec 2010

Going Green Down Under: Environmental Communication And Green Product Marketing In The South Eastern Australian Wine Industry, Kevin Michael Visconti

Open Access Dissertations

The consumption of wine has served as an international communication expedient for thousands of years. From classical symposiums of ancient times to religious ceremonies practiced for centuries, wine has played a significant part in countless social gatherings across the ages and continents. Recent growth in international wine trade, however, has impacted an increasingly disrupted natural environment through amplified carbon output, overuse of synthetic chemicals, topsoil erosion, and water mismanagement. Vintners, or winemakers, have been tasked by the implementation of new legal standards, as well as the urging of ecologically aware prospective consumers, to instill a winemaking process that is green, …

Doctoral Program Quality And Scholarly Productivity, Steven G. Shenouda Dec 2010

Doctoral Program Quality And Scholarly Productivity, Steven G. Shenouda

Open Access Dissertations

The present study was undertaken to examine the relationship between the reputation of doctoral programs in Interpersonal Communication and the degree of research productivity associated with the faculty offering the program. Authors, institutional affiliation, number of authors, position of article, and related information for every article published in Communication Monographs and Human Communication Research from 1994 through 2004 were recorded. Based on this analysis, productivity factors were calculated for faculty of every Ph.D. program in the National Communication Association (NCA) reputational study (2004) focused on Interpersonal Communication. Data analysis was conducted to explore possible statistical associations between quality assessments of …

Avian Developmental Endocrinology: The Effects And Role Of Yolk Hormones, Sibling Dynamics, And Life-History, Corinne Patricia Kozlowski Dec 2010

Avian Developmental Endocrinology: The Effects And Role Of Yolk Hormones, Sibling Dynamics, And Life-History, Corinne Patricia Kozlowski

Dissertations

Inter-specific variation of the endocrine system is an underlying component for variation in avian life-history. Females deposit hormones into the yolks of their eggs, and embryonic exposure affects nestling phenotype. Hormones are also produced endogenously by developing nestlings, further influencing their behavior and physiology. This dissertation examines the role of the endocrine system in development by focusing on several different avian taxa. Yolk hormone concentrations often vary across the laying order and may mediate hatching asynchrony. These patterns were characterized in two species that lay asynchronously hatching clutches: Eastern screech owls (Megascops asio) and cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). The patterns described …

Solving A Generalized Heron Problem By Means Of Convex Analysis, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam, Juan Salinas Jr Dec 2010

Solving A Generalized Heron Problem By Means Of Convex Analysis, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam, Juan Salinas Jr

Mathematics Research Reports

The classical Heron problem states: on a given straight line in the plane, find a point C such that the sum of the distances from C to the given points A and B is minimal. This problem can be solved using standard geometry or differential calculus. In the light of modern convex analysis, we are able to investigate more general versions of this problem. In this paper we propose and solve the following problem: on a given nonempty closed convex subset of IR!, find a point such that the sum of the distances from that point to n given nonempty …

Gsu Students Teach Math To Educators, Office Of Public Affairs

Press Releases

Governors State University graduate and undergraduate students had the opportunity to teach educators recently when they presented at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Illinois Council of Teacher of Mathematics in Springfield, Illinois.

The students, all studying to be math teachers, presented math activities they designed based on the massive sculptures in the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. The students found that the 26 sculptures, which are located on the grounds of the university, can be used to illustrate various mathematical formulas and principles.

The Wild Rose Asylum: Poems Of The Magdalen Laundries Of Ireland, Rachel Dilworth Dec 2010

The Wild Rose Asylum: Poems Of The Magdalen Laundries Of Ireland, Rachel Dilworth

University of Akron Press Publications

The poems of The Wild Rose Asylum offer a multi-faceted consideration of the historical phenomenon of Ireland’s Magdalen asylums, the largest and most controversial of which were run for 150 years, until 1996, by the Catholic Church. In poems that embrace both traditional and experimental forms, Rachel Dilworth’s work explores complex factors involved in the loss by thousands of Irish women of years of their lives, numerous aspects of their identities, and countless future possibilities to confinement and arduous unpaid laundry labor as “penitents” in these facilities for so-called “fallen” women. Pervaded by a cutting awareness of an incarceration of …

A Microfluidic Device To Establish Concentration Gradients Using Reagent Density Differences, Qingjun Kong, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Dudu, Maribel Vazquez Dec 2010

A Microfluidic Device To Establish Concentration Gradients Using Reagent Density Differences, Qingjun Kong, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Dudu, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

Microfabrication has become widely utilized to generate controlled microenvironments that establish chemical concentration gradients for a variety of engineering and life science applications. To establish microfluidic flow, the majority of existing devices rely upon additional facilities, equipment, and excessive reagent supplies, which together limit device portability as well as constrain device usage to individuals trained in technological disciplines. The current work presents our laboratory-developed bridged microLane system, which is a stand-alone device that runs via conventional pipette loading and can operate for several days without need of external machinery or additional reagent volumes. The bridged microLane is a two-layer polydimethylsiloxane …
