Study Of Solid State Fault Interruption Device For Medium Voltage Distribution Systems With Distributed Generators, Mehul K. Madan, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solid state fault interruption devices (FID) can interrupt fault currents much faster than the presently available circuit breakers. Due to their current inability to block system level voltages, presently available semiconductor devices are connected in series to increase blocking capability of the fault interrupting device. to verify the ability of the interruption device for use in a medium voltage distribution system, a FID model is subjected to simulated tests for continuous current carrying capability, rated fault current interruption, and lightning impulse withstand tests. a simulation to demonstrate the ability of the FID to interrupt fault currents in a 7.2kV distribution …

Feedback Linearization Internal Control For The Unified Power Flow Controller, Keyou Wang, Mariesa L. Crow Dec 2010

Feedback Linearization Internal Control For The Unified Power Flow Controller, Keyou Wang, Mariesa L. Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents feedback linearization-based controller design methodology for a unified power flow controller (UPFC) to achieve rapid reference signal tracking in the internal level. Feedback linearization control (FBLC) is a nonlinear technique based on differential geometry theory and overcomes the drawback of traditional PI control linearizing at one specific operating condition. FBLC is applied on UPFC dynamic model via an appropriate coordinate transformation and LQR control is then applied on the transferred linear system. the proposed control is validated on the IEEE 118-bus system with full-order generator and network models. ©2010 IEEE.

What Will Be The Effects Of Ecuador's New Oil Contracts?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Dec 2010

What Will Be The Effects Of Ecuador's New Oil Contracts?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Ecuador completed contract renegotiations Nov. 23 with several oil companies to replace profit-sharing agreements with flat-fee service contracts, but failed to reach an agreement with Petrobras and three other companies. How will the contract changes affect oil production in Ecuador? Is the government likely to make any alterations to the new policy? Will the contract changes lead would-be foreign investors to shy away from Ecuador?

Binding Ligand Prediction For Proteins Using Partial Matching Of Local Surface Patches, Lee Sael, Daisuke Kihara Dec 2010

Binding Ligand Prediction For Proteins Using Partial Matching Of Local Surface Patches, Lee Sael, Daisuke Kihara

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Functional elucidation of uncharacterized protein structures is an important task in bioinformatics. We report our new approach for structure-based function prediction which captures local surface features of ligand binding pockets. Function of proteins, specifically, binding ligands of proteins, can be predicted by finding similar local surface regions of known proteins. To enable partial comparison of binding sites in proteins, a weighted bipartite matching algorithm is used to match pairs of surface patches. The surface patches are encoded with the 3D Zernike descriptors. Unlike the existing methods which compare global characteristics of the protein fold or the global pocket shape, the …

Ministers Of Education 50 Years Of Age Or Older: Changing Titles, Positions And Responsibilities?, Benjamin Farley Haygood

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The traditional role of the Minister of Education in many Southern Baptist Churches appears to be changing. For those Ministers of Education who are 50 years of age or older, there is a need to understand what is taking place so that they can continue to use the skills, gifts, and experiences obtained in years of service. The purpose of this thesis is to study what is taking place across the Southern Baptist Convention and provide help for Ministers of Education who may be exploring vocational shifts in ministry. Also, this thesis hopes to provide help for churches in how …

Digital Implementation Of A True Random Number Generator, Sam Mitchum Dec 2010

Digital Implementation Of A True Random Number Generator, Sam Mitchum

Theses and Dissertations

Random numbers are important for gaming, simulation and cryptography. Random numbers have been generated using analog circuitry. Two problems exist with using analog circuits in a digital design: (1) analog components require an analog circuit designer to insure proper structure and functionality and (2) analog components are not easily transmigrated into a different fabrication technology. This paper proposes a class of random number generators that are constructed using only digital components and typical digital design methodology. The proposed classification is called divergent path since the path of generated numbers through the range of possible values diverges at every sampling. One …

Numerical Simulation Of Underground Solar Thermal Energy Storage, Marshall Sweet Dec 2010

Numerical Simulation Of Underground Solar Thermal Energy Storage, Marshall Sweet

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Department of Energy indicates that 97% of all homes in the US use fossil fuels either directly or indirectly for space heating. In 2005, space heating in residential homes was responsible for releasing approximately 502 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the Sun provides the Earth with 1000 watts per square meter of power everyday. This document discusses the research of modeling a system that will capture and store solar energy during the summer for use during the following winter. Specifically, flat plate solar thermal collectors attached to the roof of a single …

The Relationship Between Family Recreation And Relatedness In Children And Their Families, Kristen Berrett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the factors contributing to relatedness in children, specifically family recreation, and to look at relatedness between family members (family relatedness), and whether or not family recreation makes a contribution to this construct. Two instruments were used to collect data for this study. The Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) measured family recreation involvement and satisfaction, and the Activity-Feelings States Scales (AFS) measured child and family relatedness. The sample included elementary school children between the ages of 6 years and 12 years (n1=405), and the parents of those children (n2=405). The data …

Soil Behavior Under Blast Loading, Jichong An Dec 2010

Soil Behavior Under Blast Loading, Jichong An

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Understanding the behavior of soil under blast loading is very important to engineers in mining, tunneling, and military construction. Due to the very complex structure of a soil mass it is very difficult to describe its constitutive relation, especially when it has different water contents and it is under blast loading conditions. New protective system designs subjected to blast loading need to be proved its validation prior to predict effect of explosive before implementation. Full-scale, buried explosive tests are costly. Finite element simulations play a significant role in the design of protective systems, for example a bottom platform of lightweight …

A Generalized Non-Parametric Approach For Uncertainty Evaluation In Travel Time Prediction Models, Bhaven Naik Dec 2010

A Generalized Non-Parametric Approach For Uncertainty Evaluation In Travel Time Prediction Models, Bhaven Naik

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A core component within Advanced Traveler Information Systems is travel time information because it is easily understood and perceived by travelers. However, the suggested travel time information should be based not only on historical and real-time conditions, but also on forecasted or “unknown” future conditions.

Existing research has focused primarily on developing models that forecast point estimates of the mean travel time that are in close comparison to their respective field values. There has been limited research on any insight into the reliability or uncertainty margin that exists around the forecasted point estimate. As well, these researches have a limitation …

United Parcel Service of America, the largest motor carrier in the US, and DSG Retail the largest retailer of electrical goods in the UK, restructured operations and established captive insurance companies in offshore tax havens. In both instances, these restructurings removed sizeable amounts of income from the domestic tax base.

The IRS and HMRC opened transfer pricing audits. The UPS case involved tax year 1984 and was settled in 2003; DSG Retail involved 1997 through 2005 and was settled in 2009. Both settlements came on the heels of government-favorable court decisions, and prior to the addition of Chapter IX to …
