Campylobacter Ureolyticus: An Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen?, Susan Bullman, Daniel Corcoran, James O'Leary, Brigid Lucey, Deirdre Byrne, Roy D. Sleator

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

A total of 7194 faecal samples collected over a 1-year period from patients presenting with diarrhoea were screened for Campylobacter spp. using EntericBios, a multiplex-PCR system. Of 349 Campylobacter-positive samples, 23.8% were shown to be Campylobacter ureolyticus, using a combination of 16S rRNA gene analysis and highly specific primers targeting the HSP60 gene of this organism. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of C. ureolyticus in the faeces of patients presenting with gastroenteritis and may suggest a role for this organism as an emerging enteric pathogen.

Thinking Differently: Developing A Fall Risk Assessment For The Emergency Department Setting, Carissa K. Fauks Dec 2010

Thinking Differently: Developing A Fall Risk Assessment For The Emergency Department Setting, Carissa K. Fauks

Theses and Graduate Projects

When a patient falls in the hospital it ends up being costly for both the patient and the hospital. Having an awareness of risk factors that lead to an increase in patient falls becomes very important for all nursing staff. However, the contributing factors are not the same for every department in a hospital. The focus of this proposal is the development of a fall assessment that is specific to the emergency department. Age, cognition, elimination, physical mobility, and medications were the risk factors determined to be most important after a review of the literature. Once the fall assessment scale …

Reconstructability Analysis Of Epistasis, Martin Zwick Dec 2010

Reconstructability Analysis Of Epistasis, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The literature on epistasis describes various methods to detect epistatic interactions and to classify different types of epistasis. Reconstructability analysis (RA) has recently been used to detect epistasis in genomic data. This paper shows that RA offers a classification of types of epistasis at three levels of resolution (variable-based models without loops, variable-based models with loops, state-based models). These types can be defined by the simplest RA structures that model the data without information loss; a more detailed classification can be defined by the information content of multiple candidate structures. The RA classification can be augmented with structures from related …

Differences In Student Knowledge And Perception Of Learning Experiences Among Non-Traditional Students In Blended And Face-To-Face Classroom Delivery, Julieta A. Arano-Ocuaman Dec 2010

Differences In Student Knowledge And Perception Of Learning Experiences Among Non-Traditional Students In Blended And Face-To-Face Classroom Delivery, Julieta A. Arano-Ocuaman

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of traditional and blended (partially online and partially face-to-face) course delivery methods. This study further examined the impact of using technology to improve student learning by providing meaningful learning in the areas of content delivery, communication and collaboration, evaluation and feedback, and personal learning experiences. Non-traditional students enrolled in an elementary statistics course either delivered as a traditional course or a blended course participated in the study. It was hypothesized that students enrolled in the blended course would perform better and prefer this method of delivery compared to students enrolled …

The Effects Of Whole Body Vibration On Strength Gains In The Bench Press, The Back Squat, And The Power Clean In Division I Football Players, Kelly S. Poppinga Dec 2010

The Effects Of Whole Body Vibration On Strength Gains In The Bench Press, The Back Squat, And The Power Clean In Division I Football Players, Kelly S. Poppinga

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if whole body vibration effects strength gains in the bench press, the back squat, and the power clean in division 1 football players. Thirty-one NCAA Division 1 male football players volunteered for this study and were randomly assigned to a control group (C=16) or one of two vibration groups (V1=7, V2=8). Subjects followed the training program for eight weeks. A pre-test, mid-test, and post-test one repetition max was measured at 0, 4, and 8 weeks for the bench press, the back squat, and the power clean. A 3x3 factorial ANOVA revealed varied …

Go Ye Out From Babylon: Mormon Gathering As A Reaction To American Culture, 1831-1846, Brady G. Winslow

Student Works

Many have claimed that Mormonism is the American religion. But perphaps they have mistaken American geography for American culture. While early Mormonism took place in America, it can be interpreted as a reaction to American culture, and this is perhaps best seen in the Mormon doctrine of gathering.

Education For Renewable Electric Energy Delivery And Management Systems, Mariesa Crow, M. Baran, A. Q. Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Generation-III Engineering Research Center (ERC) established in 2008 with the mission to develop the fundamental and enabling technologies necessary for a new and paradigm shifting power grid infrastructure, the FREEDM System. the center involves more than fifty professors and one hundred fifty graduate and undergraduate students from five US universities and two international universities, as well as more than sixty companies and national laboratories in 28 states and nine countries. This paper will discuss some of the on-going efforts to educate students to …

Gms Considering Uncertainty In Wind Power In A Wind-Hydrothermal Power System, Y. Yare, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2010

Gms Considering Uncertainty In Wind Power In A Wind-Hydrothermal Power System, Y. Yare, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An optimal preventive generator maintenance scheduling (GMS) in a smart grid environment comprising wind-hydrothermal energy resources is presented in this paper. GMS problem is solved with the aim of maximizing economic benefits subject to satisfying system constraints. This GMS formulation becomes a challenging problem because of the variability and intermittency of wind speed and the incorporation of uncertainty in wind generation. the objective is to perform preventive GMS in such a manner that the annual generation cost is minimized, the annual cost saving is increased while all operating constraints are satisfied in the presence of uncertainty in wind generation. Discrete …

Voltage Prediction Using A Cellular Network, Lisa L. Grant, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2010

Voltage Prediction Using A Cellular Network, Lisa L. Grant, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Better identification tools are needed for power system voltage profile prediction. the power systems of the future will see an increase in both renewable energy sources and load demand increasing the need for quick estimation of bus voltages and line power flows for system security and contingency analysis. a Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Neural Network (CSRN) to identify and predict bus voltage dynamics is presented in this paper. the benefit of using a cellular structure over traditional neural network architectures is that the network can represent a direct mapping of any power system allowing for easier scalability to large power systems. …
