Modification And Improvement Of Empirical Likelihood For Missing Response Problem, Kwun Chuen Gary Chan
Modification And Improvement Of Empirical Likelihood For Missing Response Problem, Kwun Chuen Gary Chan
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
An empirical likelihood (EL) estimator was proposed by Qin and Zhang (2007) for a missing response problem under a missing at random assumption. They showed by simulation studies that the finite sample performance of EL estimator is better than some existing estimators. However, the empirical likelihood estimator does not have a uniformly smaller asymptotic variance than other estimators in general. We consider several modifications to the empirical likelihood estimator and show that the proposed estimator dominates the empirical likelihood estimator and several other existing estimators in terms of asymptotic efficiencies. The proposed estimator also attains the minimum asymptotic variance among …

Spatial Distribution Of Calcium-Gated Chloride Channels In Olfactory Cilia, Donald A. French, Dorjsuren Badamdorj, Steven J. Kleene
Spatial Distribution Of Calcium-Gated Chloride Channels In Olfactory Cilia, Donald A. French, Dorjsuren Badamdorj, Steven J. Kleene
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
Background
In vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons, sensory cilia transduce odor stimuli into changes in neuronal membrane potential. The voltage changes are primarily caused by the sequential openings of two types of channel: a cyclic-nucleotide-gated (CNG) cationic channel and a calcium-gated chloride channel. In frog, the cilia are 25 to 200 µm in length, so the spatial distributions of the channels may be an important determinant of odor sensitivity.
Principal Findings
To determine the spatial distribution of the chloride channels, we recorded from single cilia as calcium was allowed to diffuse down the length of the cilium and activate the channels. …

Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant drug that works by increasing the levels of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Determination of valproic acid is quite difficult because it has no chromophore groups in its structure. Aa analytical method using gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector for the determination of valproic acid in human plasma has been developed and optimized. Valproic acid was extracted from plasma by liquid-liquid extraction method using diethyl ether. The optimum analysis conditions for valproic acid in plasma were achieved by regulated gas chromatography injector and detector at a temperature of 250oC and temperature programming with an initial temperature …

Chitosan is a natural cationic polymer. That cationic property makes chitosan can form polyelectrolite complex (PEC) with anionic polymer. In this research, pectin was used as anionic polymer that interact ionically with chitosan. The aim of this research is to produce and characterize chitosan-pectin PEC that would be used as matrix in floating tablet. The solutions of chitosan and pectin 0,3% w/v were mixed in ratio 1:9, 3:7, 1:1, 7:3 and 9:1 with pH of the solution 4,5 and 5,0. The best condition to produce PEC was in pH 5,0 with ratio of chitosan and pectin = 3:7. The differences …

Theophylline is a bronchodilator used for the treatment of bronchial asthma and other respiratory diseases. Theophylline has a narrow therapeutic index (10-20 µg/ml) and relatively short elimination half-life (6,19 ± 0,031 hours). Causes rapid elimination rate of theophylline should be given periodically to maintain drug levels in blood for the desired therapeutic effect can be achieved. The preparation of theophylline controlled release is expected to produce blood concentrations of theophylline in a more stable. The physical properties of tablets and drug release from matrix systems are influenced by the nature of the composition of the matrix. This research, theophylline controlled …

The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from studies of the reaction 3He⃗(e⃗,e′n)pp in quasielastic kinematics in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Longitudinally polarized electrons were scattered off a polarized target in which the nuclear polarization was oriented perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons that were registered in a large-solid-angle detector. More than doubling the Q2 range over which it is known, we find GEn=0.0236±0.0017(stat)±0.0026(syst), 0.0208±0.0024±0.0019, and 0.0147±0.0020±0.0014 for Q2=1.72, 2.48, and 3.41 GeV2, respectively.

In this paper we provide an architecture for Tactical Information Middleware for bandwidth constrained information management. We propose the ideas of rank-Based data dissemination, and the use of a tactical information management query language. These ideas will deal with dynamic changes in bandwidth and explore opportunistic data dissemination. Thus, will lead to a cross-layer design of a system capable of handling the dynamic data management issues relevant in many missions' critical applications. © 2010 IEEE.

A Resource-Efficient Adaptive Caching Scheme For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Dan Hirsch, Sanjay Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network environment, wireless devices have finite resources such as memory, energy and they work within the wireless constraints such as limited bandwidth and unreliable communication. Therefore, storage space, bandwidth, and battery life must be managed effectively in order to extend the usefulness and lifespan of wireless devices and the network. Caching is one of those techniques which reduce the latency and tuning time for mobile devices in the wireless network. We propose a novel scheme that seeks to distribute the storage, bandwidth and energy burden through a resource-efficient adaptive caching scheme for mobile ad-hoc networks. Our …

In mobile peer-to-peer networks, proposed service discovery protocols disregard the exposure of the participating peers' privacy details (privileged information). in these methods, the participating peers must provide their identities during the service discovery process to be authorized to utilize services. However, a peer may not be willing to reveal its privileged information until it identifies the service providing peer. So, these peers face a problem; should the service requesting or the service providing peer reveal the identity first. the protocol presented in [12] solves this problem to some extent and discover the services available in the service requester's vicinity in …

Jack - Height Adjustable Office Desk Mechanism, John Walsh
Other
This mechanism was developed out of the increasing requirement for individual users to be able to adjust the height of their desk to an ergonomically correct position for their physicality. Sitting at a standard height desk (usually 720-740mm) for long durations has been linked to health problems, including back and posture problems and DVT, for those who fall either side of the average user in terms of anthropometric height range. A typical problem with "systems furniture" which is widely installed in most corporate open-plan offices is that components are "shared" for cost, functionality and aesthetic purposes. Typically, this means that …
