We report the observation of electroweak single top quark production in 3.2fb⊃-1 of pp̄ collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at √s=1.96TeV. Candidate events in the W+jets topology with a leptonically decaying W boson are classified as signal-like by four parallel analyses based on likelihood functions, matrix elements, neural networks, and boosted decision trees. These results are combined using a super discriminant analysis based on genetically evolved neural networks in order to improve the sensitivity. IscA is a key member of the iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms; however, the physiological function of IscA still remains elusive. In the present paper we report the in vivo evidence demonstrating the iron-binding activity of IscA in Escherichia coli cells. Supplement of exogenous iron (1 μM) in M9 minimal medium is sufficient to maximize the iron binding in IscA expressed in E. coli cells under aerobic growth conditions. In contrast, IscU, an iron-sulfur cluster assembly scaffold protein, or CyaY, a bacterial frataxin homologue, fails to bind any iron in E. coli cells under the same …

Golgi Cells Operate As State-Specific Temporal Filters At The Input Stage Of The Cerebellar Cortex, Shane A. Heine, Stephen M. Highstein, Pablo M. Blazquez

Cerebellar processing of incoming information begins at the synapse between mossy fibers and granule cells, a synapse that is strongly controlled through Golgi cell inhibition. Thus, Golgi cells are uniquely positioned to control the flow of information into the cerebellar cortex and understanding their responses during behavior is essential to understanding cerebellar function. Here we show, for the first time, that Golgi cells express a unique oculomotor-related signal that can be used to provide state- and time-specific filtering of granule cell activity. In nine linked nonfiction essays and eight codas, the author seeks to understand the meaning of being lost and the importance of not knowing in an era of instantaneous and ubiquitous information. Through extensive interviews, research, and memoir, the author seeks out those who choose to live lost in order to understand his own penchant for escape. Framed by the mystery of antique maps, these essays find the author in several different locations, from Tasmania to Siberia to Utah. In each, the author meets and spends time with an ambassador of each place before finally attempting to become lost himself.

A Time-Domain Analysis Of Wave Force On Small-Scale Cylinders Of Offshore Structures, Bao-Lei Geng, Bin Teng, De-Zhi Ning

To get the accurate wave loads on the small-scale cylinders on the platforms, not only the incident wave but also the diffraction and radiation wave should be considered. By taking the wave diffraction from a fixed large-scale cylinder as an example, wave loads on small-diameter cylinders in the diffraction wave field are calculated by Morison formula in this paper. A time-domain numerical model on wave diffraction from large-scale structures is developed with a higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM). Then the velocity and acceleration of any water particle in the fluid domain can be produced from the solved diffraction potential. Results …

Improving The Emulsion Stability Of Sponge Cake By The Addition Of ?-Polyglutamic Acid, Yung-Shin Shyu, Wen-Chieh Sung

The batter properties of sponge cake with the addition of γ-polyglutamic acid (PGA) at different levels (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 gkg-1, w/w) was evaluated. The viscosity, emulsion stability and foam stability increased at the addition of 0.5 gkg-1 PGA level. PGA caused significant declines in the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) enthalpy, onset and peak temperatures of ice-melting transition of sponge cake. Sponge cakes manufactured with 0.5 gkg-1 PGA addition were in general lighter on crumb color and white index than the control. Scanning electron microscopy showed that sponge cake with the addition of 0.1 and 0.5 gkg-1 PGA exhibited microstructures having …

Chaos And Universality In Two-Dimensional Ising Spin Glasses, Alan Middleton, Creighton K. Thomas, David A. Huse

Recently extended precise numerical methods and droplet scaling arguments allow for a coherent picture of the glassy states of two-dimensional Ising spin glasses to be assembled. The length scale at which entropy becomes important and produces "chaos", the extreme sensitivity of the state to temperature, is found to depend on the type of randomness. For the $\pm J$ model this length scale dominates the low-temperature specific heat. Although there is a type of universality, some critical exponents do depend on the distribution of disorder.

This report identifies indicators of underage drinking in Anchorage, Alaska, which can be used in assessing changes brought about by strategies designed to reduce underage access to alcohol and consequences associated with underage drinking. Indicators are addressed under the categories of underage access to alcohol, social norms and perceptions associated with underage drinking, alcohol consumption patterns, and consequences of underage drinking. Consequences examined include school-related consequences, risky behavior, and legal consequences of underage drinking. This thesis demonstrates how the Truman and Eisenhower administrations sought to avoid direct intervention in Indochina and halt the spread of communism at the same time. This purpose is achieved through careful analysis of primary and secondary sources, with a particular focus on the primary documentation found in Foreign Relations of the United States: 1952-1954. Through examination of these day-by-day recordings and memos, the futility of pursuing the two conflicting aims becomes clear.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an emerging and viable alternative to surgical valve replacement. A TAVI procedure involves insertion of a catheter into the heart through an artery or transapically, and expanding valve stent in place. This procedure dramatically reduces the recovery time by eliminating the need for open heart surgery. Understanding the biomechanics of the stent-valve interaction is crucial for proper device deployment and function.
