Anion Exchange Kinetics Of Nanodimensional Layered Metal Hydroxides: Use Of Isoconversional Analysis, Stephen Majoni, Jeanne Hossenlopp

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Anion exchange reactions of nanodimensional layered metal hydroxide compounds are utilized to create materials with targeted physical and chemical properties and also as a means for controlled release of intercalated anions. The kinetics of this important class of reaction are generally characterized by model-based approaches. In this work, a different approach based on isothermal, isoconversional analysis was utilized to determine effective activation energies with respect to extent of reaction. Two different layered metal hydroxide materials were chosen for reaction with chloride anions, using a temperature range of 30−60 °C. The concentrations of anions released into solution and the changes in …

Immobilization Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica On Mg2+/Al3+ Layered Double Hydroxide Particles, Steven T. Frey, Stephanie L. Guilmet, Richard G. Egan Iii, Alyssa Bennett, Sarah R. Soltau, Richard C. Holz Jan 2010

Immobilization Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica On Mg2+/Al3+ Layered Double Hydroxide Particles, Steven T. Frey, Stephanie L. Guilmet, Richard G. Egan Iii, Alyssa Bennett, Sarah R. Soltau, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A novel biomaterial formed by the immobilization of the Aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) on synthetic Mg2+ and Al3+ ion-containing layered double hydroxide (LDH) particles was prepared. Immobilization of AAP on the LDH particles in a buffered, aqueous mixture is rapid such that the maximum loading capacity, 1 × 10−9 moles of AAP/mg LDH, is achieved in a few minutes. X-ray powder diffraction of LDH samples before and after treatment with AAP indicates that the enzyme does not intercalate between the layers of LDH, but instead binds to the surface. Treatment of AAP/LDH with various amounts of …

A improved preparation of the pentadentate ligand α,α,α′,α′-tetra(pyrazolyl)lutidine, pz4lut, and the syntheses of three new alkyl-substituted pyrazolyl derivatives pz4′4lut (pz4′ = 4-methylpyrazolyl), pz*4lut (pz* = 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl), and pzDIP4lut (pzDIP = 3,5-diisopropylpyrazolyl) are described. The silver(I) complexes of these ligands were studied to ascertain the impact of pyrazolyl substitution, if any, on their binding modes and on solubility issues. In the solid state, [Ag(pz4lut)](BF4) (1), [Ag(pz4′4lut)](BF4) (2), and [Ag(pz*4lut)](BF4) (3 …

The Consequence Of Human Differences, Jospeh Vining Jan 2010

The Consequence Of Human Differences, Jospeh Vining

This essay explores the ways in which the recognition of individual and person in the legal form of thought distinguishes it from forms of thought in evolutionary biology and mathematics that are put forward as means to a complete picture of the world. The essay observes that the legal form of thought is in fact deeply involved in our modern understanding of Nature itself.

Red Algae Lose Key Mitochondrial Genes In Response To Becoming Parasitic, Lillian Hancock, Lynda Goff, Christopher E. Lane Jan 2010

Red Algae Lose Key Mitochondrial Genes In Response To Becoming Parasitic, Lillian Hancock, Lynda Goff, Christopher E. Lane

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Red algal parasites are unusual because the vast majority of them parasitize species with which they share a recent common ancestor. This strategy has earned them the name “adelphoparasites,” from the Greek, adelpho, meaning “kin.” Intracellular adelphoparasites are very rare in nature, yet have independently evolved hundreds of times among the floridiophyte red algae. Much is known about the life history and infection cycle of these parasites but nearly nothing in known about their genomes. We sequenced the mitochondrial genomes of the free-living Gracilariopsis andersonii and its closely related parasite Gracilariophila oryzoides to determine what effect a parasitic lifestyle has …

Shark Scavenging Behavior In The Presence Of Competition, Shannon P. Gerry, Andrea J. Scott Jan 2010

Shark Scavenging Behavior In The Presence Of Competition, Shannon P. Gerry, Andrea J. Scott

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The distribution of organisms within a community can often be determined by the degree of plasticity or degree of specialization of resource acquisition. Resource acquisition is often based on the morphology of an organism, behavior, or a combination of both. Performance tests of feeding can identify the possible interactions that allow one species to better exploit a prey item. Scavenging behaviors in the presence or absence of a competitor were investigated by quantifying prey selection in a trophic generalist, spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, and a trophic specialist, smooth-hounds Mustelus canis, in order to determine if each shark scavenged …

If I Had A Hammer: Can Shepardizing, Synthesis, And Other Tools Of Legal Writing Help Build Hope For Law Students?, Edward R. Becker

Articles

Are lawyers mechanics? In 1920, photographer Lewis Hines took a striking photo of a powerhouse mechanic sure-handedly wielding a large wrench to tighten bolts on a steam pump. This picture may bring to mind many things, but I suspect that many legal writing professors in our (past or present) incarnations as practicing attorneys would not look at this image and think, "My job is a lot like that." Similarly, I assume that many of our students do not think of a lawyer's role in this way. Indeed, many of our students might have chosen to pursue a career in law …

The Copyright Principles Project: Directions For Reform, Jessica D. Litman, Pamela Samuelson, The Copyright Principles Project

Articles

Copyright law performs a number of important functions. It facilitates public access to knowledge and a wide range of uses of creative works of authorship, and, in so doing, it helps educate our populace, enrich our culture, and promote free speech, free expression, and democratic values. It provides opportunities for rights holders to recoup investments in creating and disseminating their works and to enjoy the fruits of whatever success arises from the public's uses of their works. In the process, copyright also plays a role in regulating new technologies and services through which creative works may be accessed. A well-functioning …

The Last Best Hope For Progressivity In Tax, E. J. Mccaffery, James R. Hines Jr. Jan 2010

The Last Best Hope For Progressivity In Tax, E. J. Mccaffery, James R. Hines Jr.

Articles

We argue that a spending tax, as opposed to an income or wage tax, is the “last best hope” for a return to significantly more progressive marginal tax rates than obtain today. The simple explanation for this central claim looks to incentive effects, especially for “rich people,” as both economists and commentators are inclined to focus. High marginal tax rates under an income tax fall on and hence deter the socially productive activities of work and savings. High marginal rates under a wage tax fall on and hence deter the socially productive activity of work alone. But high marginal rates …

Attorneys As Arbitrators, Adam C. Pritchard, Stephen J. Choi, Jill E. Fisch Jan 2010

Attorneys As Arbitrators, Adam C. Pritchard, Stephen J. Choi, Jill E. Fisch

Articles

We study the role of attorneys as arbitrators in securities arbitration. We find that arbitrators who also represent brokerage firms or brokers in other arbitrations award significantly less compensation to investor-claimants than do other arbitrators. We find no significant effect for attorney-arbitrators who represent investors or both investors and brokerage firms. The relation between representing brokerage firms and arbitration awards remains significant even when we control for political outlook. Arbitrators who donate money to Democratic political candidates award greater compensation than do arbitrators who donate to Republican can-didates. We also study the dynamics of panel interaction. We find that the …

Redesigning The St. Louis Journalism Review: A New Media Task In Web And Critique, Diana K. Soliwon

Research Papers

The present project took root when the St. Louis Journalism Review (SJR) agreed to give its rights and publication to the School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The work began before the July 1, 2010 transfer date and as homage to the collaborative nature of web development and journalism, will continue after this degree. At hand was a new media task: with creative freedom, redesign the SJR’s website to fit the parameters of the new management, with considerations for the challenged journalism industry, its principles, workflow, the guidelines of web development and visual communication, and a budget. The …

Coordinating Sanctions In Torts, Kyle D. Logue Jan 2010

Coordinating Sanctions In Torts, Kyle D. Logue

Articles

This Article begins with the standard Law and Economics account of tort law as a regulatory tool or system of deterrence, that is, as a means of giving regulated parties the optimal ex ante incentives to minimize the costs of accidents. Building on this fairly standard (albeit not universally accepted) picture of tort law, the Article asks the question how tort law should adjust, if at all, to coordinate with already existing non-tort systems of regulation. Thus, if a particular activity is already subject to extensive agency-based regulation (whether in the form of command-and-control requirements or in the form of …

Less Food For Thought. Impact Of Attentional Instructions On Intrusive Thoughts About Snack Foods., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Helen Batey, Lisa Marie Berry, David J. Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Intrusive thoughts about food may play a role in unhealthy eating behaviours. Food-related thoughts that capture attention can lead to craving and further intrusive thoughts (Kavanagh, Andrade, & May, 2005). We tested whether diverting attention to mental images or bodily sensations would reduce the incidence of intrusive thoughts about snack foods. In two experiments, participants reported their thoughts in response to probes during three 10min periods. In the Baseline and Post-task period, participants were asked to let their mind wander. In the middle, Experimental, period, participants followed mind wandering (Control), thought diversion, or Thought Suppression instructions. Self-directed or Guided Imagery, …
