Coping With The Demands Of Mature Age Student Life, Jenny E.M. Cowell Jan 2010

Coping With The Demands Of Mature Age Student Life, Jenny E.M. Cowell

Theses : Honours

In Australia, mature age students are 20 years of age and above in the year that they commence study and comprise approximately 65 per cent of students enrolled in Australian universities (EIM Support, 201 0). There are many reasons why they may choose to commence tertiary education (Hoskins, Newstead, & Dennis, 1997) with their transition into university likely to require them to make changes across many life domains (Gall, Evans, & Bellerose, 2000). There is much evidence to suggest that mature age students are capable of completing their undergraduate degrees, however they have a relatively low retention rate, especially in …

The Decision Making Process Involved When Changing Career: A Qualitative Study Of Registered Nurses Who Have Left The Profession, Katherine S. Gallager

Theses : Honours

Career choice is an important decision an individual has to make during their lifetime. Personal, environmental and organisational factors all assist this decision process as individuals strive for a work-life balance within careers that meet their needs and realise their potential. This research study investigated which factors contributed to the decision process of Registered Nurses (RNs) who have left the profession for a career change. There is currently a global shortage of RNs, which is of major concern to healthcare policy makers in most countries, including Australia. This qualitative study examined the narrative interviews often females over the age of25 …

Repetition And Possibilities: Foundational Communication Course, Graduate Teaching Assistants, Etc., Chris Mcrae Jan 2010

Repetition And Possibilities: Foundational Communication Course, Graduate Teaching Assistants, Etc., Chris Mcrae

Basic Communication Course Annual

This essay considers repetition as a site for change and possibility in the foundational communication course. Using performative writing, I consider repetition as simultaneously comfortable and dangerous. As repeated actions become commonplace they can easily go unnoticed, and unchallenged. However, repeated actions can also become recognizable as patterns that can be changed. Repetition is then, a useful and even necessary starting place for the recognition of possibilities and the enactment of change. As a graduate teaching assistant, I find repetition useful for my pedagogy, but I am wary of how power operates through repetition in discursive and material ways. I …

The Stories We Tell, And Have Told, About Tribal Sovereignty: Legal Fictions At Their Most Pernicious, Hope M. Babcock Jan 2010

The Stories We Tell, And Have Told, About Tribal Sovereignty: Legal Fictions At Their Most Pernicious, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Starting with Chief Justice John Marshall and continuing through to the present Supreme Court, the story of Indian sovereignty has been consistent—it exists only in the most diminished form. Some reasons for this have been premised on the incapacity of Indians to self-govern; others on theories of federalism; while still others on the ambitions of non-Indians. However, the factual premises behind the concept of diminished sovereignty are baseless—legal fictions about the conquest of Indians and their nature. These fictions originated in Chief Justice Marshall’s Indian Law Trilogy and should have vanished long ago when their original purposes were fulfilled, like …

Diversity's Strange Career: Recovering The Racial Pluralism Of Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Anders Walker Jan 2010

Diversity's Strange Career: Recovering The Racial Pluralism Of Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

Though diversity remains a compelling state interest, recent rulings like Ricci v. DeStefano and Parents’ Involved toll a menacing bell for schools employing racial classifications to admit minority students. Yet, defenders of diversity may find refuge in original meanings, particularly the original meaning of diversity as articulated by Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. in Regents v. Bakke in 1978. Virginian by birth, Powell’s interest in “genuine diversity” coincided with a forgotten version of pluralism extant in the American South during thefirst half of the Twentieth Century. Further, Powell’s conviction that diversity distinguished America coalesced during a trip to the Soviet …

Generation Y And Vocal Fry, Paul Michael Valley Jan 2010

Generation Y And Vocal Fry, Paul Michael Valley

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the author explores a vocal phenomenon called “vocal fry” and why this dysphonia has emerged as one of the primary means of communication for the population referred to as “Generation Y.” The first chapter defines what vocal fry is and why it is of modest value to the stage actor. The second chapter defines the physiological means by which the human body creates sound, what good sound is and how vocal fry is created. The third and fourth chapters define several generations as well as what defines Gen Y, and the communication physiologies associated with those generations. …

A Short History Of Tontines, Kent Mckeever Jan 2010

A Short History Of Tontines, Kent Mckeever

Faculty Scholarship

A tontine is an investment scheme through which shareholders derive some form of profit or benefit while they are living, but the value of each share devolves to the other participants and not the shareholder's heirs on the death of each shareholder. The tontine is usually brought to an end through a dissolution and distribution of assets to the living shareholders when the number of shareholders reaches an agreed small number.

If people know about tontines at all, they tend to visualize the most extreme form – a joint investment whose heritable ownership ends up with the last living shareholder. …

A Common Lawyer's Perspective On Contrefaçon, Jane C. Ginsburg Jan 2010

A Common Lawyer's Perspective On Contrefaçon, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

Contrefaçon in French copyright law examines the scope of French copyright through the lens of remedies. Contrefaçon is the act to which certain civil and criminal sanctions attach. Viewed from this angle, the history of French copyright law tells a tale of the slow emergence of a unified concept of the wrongful act, covering not only the manufacturing of copies but also public performances, live and through transmissions. The emphasis on contrefaçon reveals the continuity of the revolutionary authors' right of 1793 with the ancient régime of printing regulation, with unauthorized production of physical copies of books remaining the essence …

Predictors Of College Persistence: Learning Strategies, Use Of Campus Services, And Beliefs About Intelligence, Mailee Ong Xiong Kue Jan 2010

Predictors Of College Persistence: Learning Strategies, Use Of Campus Services, And Beliefs About Intelligence, Mailee Ong Xiong Kue

Open Access Dissertations

Minority college student enrollment has doubled from 15 to 32 percent within the past thirty years (National Center for Education Statistics, 2009b), with the growth expecting to continue into the near future. While there are gains in the enrollment of minority students in higher education, there remains a completion gap for minority students. This study examined the role of learning strategies, use of campus services and beliefs about intelligence on college persistence of 203 minority and 571 non-minority undergraduate students from the University of Rhode Island. Survey results revealed significant differences in use and trust of campus services and beliefs …

Envisioning Morality In Times Of Dynastic Change, Huan Jin Jan 2010

Envisioning Morality In Times Of Dynastic Change, Huan Jin

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The emphasis placed on morality became increasingly remarkable during late imperial China, especially at the junctures of dynastic change. This thesis explores the problem of the construction of morality, and I focus on two plays in which the idea of morality is presented in complicated ways: the late Yuan play Pipa ji τÉ╡τÉ╢Φ«░: The Lute) which primarily circulated during Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the early Qing play Taohua shan µíâΦè▒µëç: The Peach Blossom Fan) which deals with the late Ming period. In this thesis, I primarily treat these two plays as texts, and I try to answer how ideas …

Blue Notes From Three Songs: Malleable Artifacts As Related To Evolving Cultural Identity, Lou Lucas Jan 2010

Blue Notes From Three Songs: Malleable Artifacts As Related To Evolving Cultural Identity, Lou Lucas

A consideration of three State Songs, ΓÇ£My Old Kentucky HomeΓÇ¥ by Stephen Foster, ΓÇ£Carry Me Back to Old VirginnyΓÇ¥ by James A. Bland, and ΓÇ£The Missouri WaltzΓÇ¥ with lyrics by James Royce Shannon. The combination of black dialect and negative stereotypes, with elevation to special status impacting identity, necessitated their alteration. Whose Identity Is It Anyway? A Study Of The Media's Representation Of Iraq Citizens And Their Culture, Joyce L'Heureux Jan 2010

Whose Identity Is It Anyway? A Study Of The Media's Representation Of Iraq Citizens And Their Culture, Joyce L'Heureux

Open Access Master's Theses

What happens to our perceptions when provided with an invitation by news media, specifically print media, to accept what is presented as reality? Does what we read in the news media constrict our thinking and create an acceptance of the words as they are written, a type of cultural blindness to the qualities, the humanness and individuality of other cultures? Or, do we read the words on the paper and open our lens to create a greater understanding of individuals who differ from us in values, attitudes and beliefs? The truth is the same stories which provide us with an …

Impossible Whiteness: Race, Gender, And American Identity In Early Twentieth-Century American Literature, Tarah Demant Jan 2010

Impossible Whiteness: Race, Gender, And American Identity In Early Twentieth-Century American Literature, Tarah Demant

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In Impossible Whiteness, I reveal whiteness--though oftentimes still an implicit critical assumption of normalcy--as a complex, shifting category in the literature of early twentieth-century America, and show how gender, particularly, disrupts American whiteness. I deconstruct the various ways in which whiteness is defined legally, culturally, and in the marketplace, and demonstrate how Edith Wharton, Anzia Yezierska, and F. Scott Fitzgerald trace these standards of whiteness and the inevitable failure of such racial: and implicitly gendered) refinement. Though critical literature has been slow to consider the role of race for these authors, I reveal them as actively participating in contemporary dialogues …

Climate Change, Fragmentation, And The Challenges Of Global Environmental Law: Elements Of A Post-Copenhagen Assemblage, William Boyd Jan 2010

Climate Change, Fragmentation, And The Challenges Of Global Environmental Law: Elements Of A Post-Copenhagen Assemblage, William Boyd

Publications

The 2009 United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen has been widely viewed as a failure -a referendum in the eyes of many on the top-down, comprehensive approach to climate governance embodied in the Kyoto Protocol and carried forward in efforts to negotiate a successor regime. Despite a modest agreement on future work toward a new agreement, the most recent climate meeting in Cancún, Mexico reinforces this view, underscoring the conclusion that Copenhagen represents an important inflection point for international climate policy. Although much of the post-Copenhagen commentary has correctly identified various problems, even fatal flaws, with the process, very little …

Cultural Responses To Volcanic Hazards On Mt Merapi, Indonesia, Katherine Helen Mary Donovan Jan 2010

Cultural Responses To Volcanic Hazards On Mt Merapi, Indonesia, Katherine Helen Mary Donovan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Over the last decade an interdisciplinary science has evolved in order to reduce the impact of natural hazards by incorporating social sciences into physical hazard studies. This science has revealed that a community's ability to anticipate, cope with and recover from the impact of natural hazards relies upon that society's vulnerability. The concept of vulnerability has conventionally focussed on certain key social statistics such as wealth, age and gender, yet there is another element of vulnerability: the component of culture. In this study culture refers to the oral histories, taboos, ceremonies and legends that are created in order to explain, …

"Hey, Hey, He Gay, He Gay . . . Okay" . . . Or Is It?: The Sociological Importance Of Bruno, Chris Bishop Jan 2010

"Hey, Hey, He Gay, He Gay . . . Okay" . . . Or Is It?: The Sociological Importance Of Bruno, Chris Bishop

Honors Theses

Sacha Baron Cohen is a British comedian who has garnered a great deal of controversy over the years. Through his characters, Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, he attempts to trick people into letting down their guards and revealing any prejudices (racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, misogyny, et cetera) that they may have. In doing so, each of his three characters has sparked a debate concerning the different issues they bring up: with Ali G, it was whether the character was racist or exposed racism; with Borat, it was whether the character was anti-Semitic or revealed anti-Semitism; and with Bruno, it is whether …

Exploring The Life Of Edith Fetherston Through Her Clothing, Breanna Eckley Jan 2010

Exploring The Life Of Edith Fetherston Through Her Clothing, Breanna Eckley

Honors Theses

This research is an examination of the life of Edith Fetherston through studying her clothing and comparing her clothes to fashion history. The authors of Survey of Historic Costume, Tortora and Eubank, state that: 'Dress serves as a means of communication,' and that 'historic dress provides readers with some context for the period in which costumes were worn'. Most importantly, they state that clothing is 'a glimpse of attitudes and values as they were expressed by individuals of [a] period.' (4). Studying clothing history is a way to understand the attitudes of the times; it has a relationship with the …
