Fairy Tale Films, Pauline Greenhill, Sidney Eve Matrix
Fairy Tale Films, Pauline Greenhill, Sidney Eve Matrix
All USU Press Publications
In this, the first collection of essays to address the development of fairy tale film as a genre, Pauline Greenhill and Sidney Eve Matrix stress, "the mirror of fairy-tale film reflects not so much what its audience members actually are but how they see themselves and their potential to develop (or, likewise, to regress)." As Jack Zipes says further in the foreword, “Folk and fairy tales pervade our lives constantly through television soap operas and commercials, in comic books and cartoons, in school plays and storytelling performances, in our superstitions and prayers for miracles, and in our dreams and daydreams. …

Dramatic Forms And Identity-Formation In The Works Of William Blake, Diane Piccitto
Dramatic Forms And Identity-Formation In The Works Of William Blake, Diane Piccitto
Digitized Theses
This study investigates the dramatic nature of William Blake’s multimedia art (poetry, painting, engraving) and the resulting implications for identity. Although he wrote little conventional drama, his illuminated works resonate with theatre and performance. The recent surge of Romantic scholarship devoted to theatricality and dramatic stagings offers new perspectives for understanding Blake’s art form and his conception of identity and identity-formation. The initial chapters of this project explore the way the dynamism between word and image in his works not only creates a distinctly dramatic genre but also encourages a specifically theatrical audience, one which is called on to act. …
'What Light Through Yonder Window Breaks?’ Exploring Literacy Discourse Via Net Gen, Adaptations Of William Shakespeare’S Romeo And Juliet, Stacey Wheal
Digitized Theses
Current discourse regarding literacy is fraught with tensions between classes, conventions and forms. Popular, net generation culture has challenged “traditional” views of literacy fixated on authorial control, audience passivity and written words. Instead, net geners consider literacy “multimodal” or culturally situated, collaborative and formless, encompassing countless modes from books to music compositions, films and videogames. Through semi-structured interviews with creative practitioners and semiotic analysis of diegetic/extra-diegetic materials, this thesis explores how the producers of three contemporary or “net generation” adaptations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Daniel Fischlin’s ,Speare: The Literacy Arcade Game and Sonia …
(Re)Situating The Stage, Playing The Field: The Politics Of Location In Leaky Heaven’S Ziggurat, Melanie Preston
(Re)Situating The Stage, Playing The Field: The Politics Of Location In Leaky Heaven’S Ziggurat, Melanie Preston
Digitized Theses
This case study examines the politics of location as they emerge in an experimental theatre-circus production. Ziggurat was an award-winning original theatre-circus show, staged under a (small) big top, by Vancouver’s Leaky Heaven in July of 2004. Using extensive interviews with project participants, video and photographie records, company documents and published press, I reconstruct Ziggurat in three spheres of study: the show’s creation, the performance(s), and the audience reception. In keeping with new critical thinking on live performance and located theatre analysis, this study combines material, semiotic, and spatial analyses to redraw the boundaries of theatrical production. Viewing the Ziggurat …

Fahrenheit 451: Tempreture Rising, Douglas C. Moore
Fahrenheit 451: Tempreture Rising, Douglas C. Moore
ETD Archive
Fahrenheit 451 is acknowledged by many theorists as one of the most symbolic dystopias of the twentieth century, and although the novel has been analyzed extensively with a focus on the influence of mass communication, no study has addressed the hyperreal factors of television in Bradbury's world. Bradbury has expressed his concern about the influence television has on the masses, not only in his fictional dystopia, but in American society today. Television's capability of mass-producing simulacra promotes hyperreality, which results in a distortion of meaning and implosion of reality. This study will use Jean Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality as a …

Shells, Joline L. Scott

This thesis combines four short stories which revolve around themes of loss and disorientation. The first three stories, "Costa Rica," "Greece," and "On the Way Down to Florida" are derived from a larger work entitled GhostShells, and are connected by character development and a common mystery. The fourth piece, "Car Crash," is an independent piece that centers around a minor auto accident and the community activity it creates. All four pieces are linked by a central assertion that our physical bodies are merely shells for the souls within, and may be empty or full depending on the state of the …
The Only Common Thread: Race, Youth, And The Everyday Rebellion Of Rock And Roll, Cleveland, Ohio, 1952-1966, Dana Aritonovich
The Only Common Thread: Race, Youth, And The Everyday Rebellion Of Rock And Roll, Cleveland, Ohio, 1952-1966, Dana Aritonovich
ETD Archive
This thesis is a social and cultural history of young people, race relations, and rock and roll music in Cleveland between 1952 and 1966. It explores how the combination of de facto segregation and rock and roll shaped attitudes about race for those coming of age after the Second World War. Population changes during the Second Great Migration helped bring the sound of southern black music to northern cities like Cleveland, and provided fertile ground for rock and roll to flourish, and for racial prejudice to be confronted. Critics blamed the music for violence, juvenile delinquency, and sexual depravity, among …
Hrotsvit Of Gandersheim: Her Works And Their Messages, Kathryn A. Mcdonald-Miranda
Hrotsvit Of Gandersheim: Her Works And Their Messages, Kathryn A. Mcdonald-Miranda
ETD Archive
Hrotsvit of Gandersheim, a poetess and playwright during the tenth century, created a body of work that both reflected and instructed people in her society. During this period, Europe witnessed extensive societal changes including the reemergence of the Holy Roman Empire, the eastward expansion of Christianity, and a cultural development known as the Ottonian Renaissance. The imperial court, emphatic sponsors of the arts, approved of the legends, dramas, and histories written by Hrotsvit as Christian alternatives to popular pagan literature. The following text presents interpretations of the legends and dramas identifying how they functioned as didactic devices intended to cultivate …

DEE struggles to uphold her political ideals in the face of her very proper mother, THERESA, and her long-time, over-achieving friend, LEENA. She makes stands that shock and antagonize both women, including becoming a case worker for bad neighborhoods, and having lesbian romantic relationships rather than heterosexual ones. Her friend GABRIEL, a cynical gay man, is her one ally in these choices. When DEE falls in love with a man, however, these relationships are inverted, and GABRIEL feels betrayed by her cavalier attitude towards sexual orientation. GABRIEL stops speaking to DEE, and DEE and ALLEN get married. When ALLEN dies, …
Emotional Intelligence And Cognitive Moral Development In Undergraduate Business Students, Elizabeth Pluskwik
Emotional Intelligence And Cognitive Moral Development In Undergraduate Business Students, Elizabeth Pluskwik
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
This study examines relationships between emotional intelligence (EI) and cognitive moral development (CMD) in undergraduate business students. The ability model of emotional intelligence was used in this study, which evaluated possible relationships between EI and CMD in a sample of 82 undergraduate business students. The sample population was approximately 700 students in a private university in the Midwest United States. A weak, positive relationship was found between overall emotional intelligence and moral development, but the strength of this relationship failed to reach statistical significance. However, one branch of EI, Understanding Emotions, did have a positive correlation with moral development at …

Development Of Lower Extremity Injury Criteria And Biomechanical Surrogate To Evaluate Military Vehicle Occupant Injury During An Explosive Blast Event, Brian J. Mckay
Wayne State University Dissertations
Anti-vehicular (AV) landmines and improvised explosive devices (IED) have accounted for more than half of the United States military hostile casualties and wounded in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). The lower extremity is the predominantly injured body region following an AV mine or IED blast accounting for 26 percent of all combat injuries in OIF (Owens et al., 2007). Detonations occurring under the vehicle transmit high amplitude and short duration axial loads onto the foot-ankle-tibia region of the occupant causing injuries to the lower leg. The current effort was initiated to develop lower extremity injury criteria and biofidelic biomechanical surrogate to …

A Comparative Study Of Robert Lewis, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler And Sanford Meisner In The Context Of Current Research About The Stanislavsky System, Ruthel Honey-Ellen Darvas
Wayne State University Dissertations
Decades of interpretation based on incorrect and incomplete information regarding Stanislavsky and his System have erroneously guided the advent of modern acting theory in the United States. This study, using current research about the Stanislavsky System, examines four notable acting teachers--Robert Lewis, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Sanford Meisner--to determine whose philosophy most accurately reflects the Stanislavsky System as it is now understood. The concepts of action, imagination, bits, tasks, emotion memory and active analysis are each explored independently. Each concept is examined as it relates to the System and then compared to the concepts as interpreted and put into …

Blasphemy In Pre-Criminal Code Canada: Two Sketches, Jeremy Patrick
Blasphemy In Pre-Criminal Code Canada: Two Sketches, Jeremy Patrick
St. Thomas Law Review
Few people realize that Canada has a law against blasphemy, and even fewer realize that this prohibition extends as far back as the origin of the country. The text of Canada's Criminal Code's ("the Criminal Code") blasphemous libel provision, which was enacted in 1892, and the five reported cases arising under it, are the most relevant materials for understanding the legal concept of blasphemy as it exists in Canada today. However, these materials reveal little about how irreligious speech was treated by the criminal justice system prior to the advent of the Criminal Code. This article attempts to fill in …
