Advocacy For Arts Education In Public Schools, Guinevere Thomason-Powers Jan 2010

Advocacy For Arts Education In Public Schools, Guinevere Thomason-Powers

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Right now, thousands of children are being denied an Arts education in our public schools. For my Capstone project I created a radio Public Service announcement to launch a public awareness campaign. The campaign is meant to inspire parents, teachers, students and community members to advocate for getting Arts education back into our schools. The PSA directs listeners to a website that has a collection of links to local and national movements already in progress. Creativity is the number one ability our children need to have in order to be successful in the 21st century. Creativity generates creative problem-solving, critical …

Civil Society Sector And Political Change: An Interview With Catherine Lim, Lien Centre For Social Innovation Jan 2010

Civil Society Sector And Political Change: An Interview With Catherine Lim, Lien Centre For Social Innovation

Social Space

Singapore is a society undergoing transitions. With a burgeoning migrant community, the advent of integrated resorts with casinos and an arguably increasingly effervescent non-profit, civil society sector, Singapore looks to be a society that is rapidly opening up. Yet, as writer and political commentator Catherine Lim controversially proposes, civil society and non-profit activists cannot create change without getting their voices heard and actively participating in the political process. She shares with Social Space, her thoughts on the indispensable ingredients for openness and political engagement in a society that wants to be truly global.

Who Is Telling This Story? : A Study Of An Aesthetic Education Collaboration Between A Classroom Teacher And A Cultural Institution, Katherine Fox

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This study explores the classroom teacher's role in a collaboration between a New York City classroom teacher and Lincoln Center Institute. Aesthetic education, imaginative learning, and collaboration between classroom teachers and teaching artists, the core practices of Lincoln Center Institute's inquiry units, are defined through a review of other established approaches to these concepts. The perspective of a third-grade teacher who participated in an inquiry unit focused on MytholoJazz, a storytelling performance illustrates the purpose, planning, and action that characterize Lincoln Center Institute's programs. Qualitative analysis of the teacher's work, in addition to her own reflection on the process, reveal …

Regenerating The Quays In Salford: An Analysis Of Visitor Perception, Behaviour And Experience, Ruth Craggs, Peter Schofield

Articles

Tourism can generate substantial benefits to destination communities and has featured extensively in urban regeneration policy, but whilst there is now an extensive literature covering urban tourism and dockland regeneration, visitor perceptions of urban waterfront destinations and their on-site behaviour and experience remain largely unexplored. The paper focuses on the Quays in Salford, the city’s former docklands, which has been regenerated and repositioned as its flagship tourism product. It reports the findings from a questionnaire survey of visitors’ perceptions, behaviour and experience of the Quays. A principal components analysis revealed that four product performance dimensions: ‘primary attractions’, ‘secondary attractions’, ‘access’ …

Beyond Description: Converting Web Site Usage Statistics Into Concrete Site Improvement Ideas, Julie Arendt, Cassie Wagner

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Web site usage statistics are a widely used tool for Web site development, but libraries are still learning how to use them successfully. This case study summarizes how Morris Library at Southern Illinois University Carbondale implemented Google Analytics on its Web site and used the reports to inform a site redesign. As the main campus library at a research university with about 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the library included resources from multiple library departments on a single site. In planning the redesign, Morris Library's Virtual Library Group combined usage reports with information from other sources, such as usability tests …

Polyvore Collaboration: Innovation In Informal Online Affiliation Networks, Andrew P. Feldstein Dps, Brent Wilson Jan 2010

Polyvore Collaboration: Innovation In Informal Online Affiliation Networks, Andrew P. Feldstein Dps, Brent Wilson

TILT Faculty Publications

Online communities engaged in collaborative exchange exhibit characteristics of spontaneous communitas as defined by Victor Turner (1982). Interactions taking place in these communities also correspond to Harrison White's (2008) concept of network formation as a tension between identity and control. A social network analysis of activities in the Polyvore community maps the behavior of members as they oscillate between liminoid transactions and structured integration; between creativity and conformity. An affiliation network is a two-mode network consisting of a set of actors and a set of events. This paper studies an affiliation network as it develops within the Polyvore community.

Facilitating Group Discussions: Understanding Group Development And Dynamics, Kathy Takayama Jan 2010

Facilitating Group Discussions: Understanding Group Development And Dynamics, Kathy Takayama

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Facilitating discussions requires the ability to engage different perspectives and skills in response to the needs of the group. How well a group works together depends upon the dynamics among participants and the ability of the facilitator to gauge and respond to these dynamics. An effective facilitator works to create an inclusive learning environment while being prepared to set boundaries and rules when necessary. Yet, even experienced facilitators can be confronted with situations or individuals that prevent the group from functioning. Such situations are even more daunting for new faculty and graduate student Teaching Assistants (TAs) who are new to …

A New Political Truth: Exposure To Sexually Violent Materials Causes Sexual Violence, Anthony D'Amato Jan 2010

A New Political Truth: Exposure To Sexually Violent Materials Causes Sexual Violence, Anthony D'Amato

Faculty Working Papers

The Meese Commission gave this nation a new political truth that in years to come will undoubtedly play an important role in federal or state efforts to restrict or suppress speech having pornographic content. Legislators, policymakers and the general public will quote and rely upon the Commission's key finding that exposure to sexually violent materials "bears a causal relationship" to acts of sexual violence, unaware that the principal drafter of the Report played down this confidence in a separately published academic essay.

Readings In Innovation, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu, Institute Of Innovation And Entrepreneurship

Research Collection Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This is a collection of practice oriented papers that I had written from 2005 – 2010 and published in relevant conferences. The papers were written primarily to share my experiences as an innovator and an innovation manager over thirty five years of my professional life. They are a collection of frameworks, heuristic algorithms and processes that I have penned down from my experience. They are neither theories nor only options available to innovators and innovation managers. This is yet another offering in the world of “Innovation Buffet” that innovators could consume. The sole purpose in compiling these papers is to …
