Marital Adjustment And Emotional Symptoms In Infertile Couples: Gender Differences, Verda Tüzer, Altuğ Tuncel, Sema Göka, Süheyla Doğan Bulut, Fati̇h Volkan Yüksel, Ali̇ Atan, Erol Göka

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine the psychosocial and demographic factors related to marital adjustment and emotional symptoms in infertile couples according to gender differences. Materials and methods: The study sample, consisting of 60 primary infertile couples, was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The scores derived from men and women were compared according to infertility factor. Multiple regression analysis models were used to explore the linkages between emotional symptoms and marital adjustment. Results: Statistically significant gender differences were noted in affectional expression and sexual satisfaction domains of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (P < 0.05). Our analyses showed that various aspects of marital adjustment have predictive power on anxiety and depressive symptoms of infertile men, especially when the infertility is due to male factor. Conclusion: Results of this study emphasize the importance of psychological and sexual counseling in the course of infertility treatment.

Netherton syndrome (NS) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, unknown etiology, ichthyosiform cutaneous changes, atopic diathesis, and alterations in the hair shaft. As a result of aging coupled with immune deficiency, clinical symptoms may vary. Herein, we present 2 siblings with the characteristic cutaneous symptoms of NS, albeit with some differences between the siblings. Materials and methods: Two sisters presented to our clinic with sparse and brittle hair along with pruritic, erythematous, and scaling cutaneous lesions. Both patients underwent a clinical examination and laboratory analyses. Results: Based on the clinical and laboratory findings, both patients were …

Coping With Work-Life Conflict: Antecedents To Seeking Policy-Based And Individually Negotiated Accommodations, Heather M. Lauzun Jan 2010

Coping With Work-Life Conflict: Antecedents To Seeking Policy-Based And Individually Negotiated Accommodations, Heather M. Lauzun

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research concerning coping with work-life conflict has been limited (Eby et al., 2005). This thesis suggests that employees can cope by seeking a work-life accommodation. Contextual and individual antecedents of seeking policy-based and individually negotiated accommodations are explored. Hypothetical accommodations and actual accommodations sought were assessed as outcomes. A sample of 148 working adults from a variety of organizations was surveyed online. As hypothesized, for the hypothetical outcome, family supportive organizational perceptions, family supportive supervisor perceptions, and human capital significantly predicted seeking individually negotiated accommodations. Furthermore, as hypothesized, both family supportive organizational perceptions and family supportive supervisor perceptions had significantly …

Questions Of Transfer: Writers' Perspective On Familiar/Unfamiliar Writing Tasks In A Capstone Writing Course, Heather G. Lettner-Rust Jan 2010

Questions Of Transfer: Writers' Perspective On Familiar/Unfamiliar Writing Tasks In A Capstone Writing Course, Heather G. Lettner-Rust

English Theses & Dissertations

Understanding what students bring from one writing context to another may the central concern for teachers of writing from elementary school to adult learning. Research from the field of composition studies offers knowledge about writing as process(es) (Emig, 1971; Shaughnessy, 1979; Russell, 1999), as socially constructed performances (Flower & Hayes, 1980; Bartholomae, 1985; Bloom, 1985), and as part of a larger activity system (Russell, 1997). This dissertation ties together theories of writing as an activity in a broader system of tools and outcomes and current research on transfer in writing in order to illustrate writers' perspectives on particular writing tasks. …

On Respect, Authority & Neutrality: A Response, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

I owe a great debt to Professors Wall, Darwall, and Green for their willingness to challenge, develop, and question some of my publications, which forced me to confront a few of the shortcomings in my views and, I hope, to clarify and improve some of them. Given the diversity of the topics, I respond to each separately. I aimed to avoid minor points and to write only on matters which affect the cogency of my views or theirs on important issues.1 For that reason, as well as for reasons of space, not all the issues they raise are dealt …

A Winning Proposition: The Economic Impact Of Successful National Football League Franchises, Michael C. Davis, Christian M. End Jan 2010

A Winning Proposition: The Economic Impact Of Successful National Football League Franchises, Michael C. Davis, Christian M. End

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research has demonstrated that a Super Bowl victory increases the personal income of the individuals in the metropolitan area from which the winning teams come. We argue that the economic benefits should extend beyond just the championship team's city to the cities of teams that experience seasonal success, and thus, the winning percentages of National Football League teams were included in our model. When controlling for sources of bias, winning percentage of the local professional football team had a significant positive effect on real per capita personal income. Explanations for these conclusions are offered from a psychological perspective. © 2008 …

That Glorious Fire It Kindled: Extremes Of (Un)Righteous Sexuality In Books I And Iii Of Spenser's Faerie Queene, S. Erin Mclean Jan 2010

That Glorious Fire It Kindled: Extremes Of (Un)Righteous Sexuality In Books I And Iii Of Spenser's Faerie Queene, S. Erin Mclean

Honors Theses

Edmund Spenser's epic romance, The Faerie Queene (1590, 1596), claims to glorify Queen Elizabeth I, but the author hides an underlying critique of the queen throughout the poem. At the same time that Spenser openly praises the English monarch, he also reveals the faults and contradictions present in her image through how he presents the main characters in the story. In Faerie Queene, Spenser establishes a sexuality spectrum that features the lechery of Redcrosse Knight and the hypersensitive purity of Britomart; this demonstrates the various extremes of immoral sexuality. Studying both these characters reveals that the success of each knight's …

Russian Heritage Language Speakers In The U.S.: A Profile, Olga Kagan Jan 2010

Russian Heritage Language Speakers In The U.S.: A Profile, Olga Kagan

Russian Language Journal

Brecht and Ingold (2002) advocate systematic efforts to develop heritage language (HL) pedagogy to remedy U.S. language deficits: “…because of [heritage language learners’(HLLs’)] existing language and cultural knowledge, they may require substantially less instructional time than other learners to develop these skills. This is especially true for speakers of the less commonly taught languages” (p. 1).

Some Thoughts On The Societal Impact Of Linguistics, Arto Mustajoki

Russian Language Journal

Today, scholars are obliged to justify the necessity of research in their own fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the channels of societal impact of linguistic research. In other words, I will try to answer the following question: in what ways is the work of scholars dealing with language(s) useful for society? The paper is based on my articles published in Finnish (Mustajoki 2005, 2011) and on oral presentations in various academic circles. I will first discuss some general ideas concerning the societal impact of research and researchers. I will then try to apply these ideas to …

Utilising A Combined Exercise And Counselling Program To Examine The Relationship Between Emotional Self-Efficacy And Physiological Improvements In Breast Cancer Survivors, Jena K. Buchan Jan 2010

Utilising A Combined Exercise And Counselling Program To Examine The Relationship Between Emotional Self-Efficacy And Physiological Improvements In Breast Cancer Survivors, Jena K. Buchan

Theses

Breast cancer diagnosis in women has increased in recent years, though medical progress has helped more patients become survivors rather than victims. With cancer diagnosis and treatment, however, comes a host of psychological and physical side effects that must be addressed. Research has found exercise and counselling may decrease the detrimental effects of breast cancer, but programs have typically utilised these modalities separately. As psychosocial issues appear correlated with physical health, it is imperative to examine the mind-body connection and explore the benefits of a combination exercise and counselling program. One psychological variable of interest is emotional self-efficacy, which relates …

Models Of Faith And Reason, Peter Holmes Jan 2010

Models Of Faith And Reason, Peter Holmes

Theses

In his excellent work The Assurance of things Hoped For 1 surveying the development of the understanding of “faith” in the context of the Christian religion, Avery Dulles provides a concise sketch of the historical development and current manifestation of seven 'models' of faith which still have some contemporary influence. This thesis takes each of the models of faith Dulles presents and gives a brief description of the model; offers some preliminary observations about the relationship between faith and reason in the respective models; and, by examining the Church's teaching on faith and reason in Fides et Ratio, discusses …

The Role Of The Imagination In The Religious Conversion Of Adolescents Attending Catholic Secondary Schools, Richard Patrick Branson

Theses

The mission of the Catholic Church is evangelisation, the purpose of which is conversion. At a diocesan level, the mission is carried out through the agencies of family, parish and school. Every Catholic school is mandated to carry out its part in the Church’s mission through its curriculum that incorporates both Religious Education and planned catechetical experiences. This study was devised to find out some students’ perceptions of their faith, the influences that they perceive on changes to their faith, and to describe how the imagination assisted their faith development and religious conversion. Fifteen Catholic secondary school students from four …

Neuronal Network Pharmacodynamics Of Gabaergic Modulation In The Human Cortex Determined Using Pharmaco-Magnetoencephalography., Stephen D. Hall, Gareth R. Barnes, Paul L. Furlong, Stefano Seri, Arjan Hillebrand Jan 2010

Neuronal Network Pharmacodynamics Of Gabaergic Modulation In The Human Cortex Determined Using Pharmaco-Magnetoencephalography., Stephen D. Hall, Gareth R. Barnes, Paul L. Furlong, Stefano Seri, Arjan Hillebrand

School of Psychology

Neuronal network oscillations are a unifying phenomenon in neuroscience research, with comparable measurements across scales and species. Cortical oscillations are of central importance in the characterization of neuronal network function in health and disease and are influential in effective drug development. Whilst animal in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology is able to characterize pharmacologically induced modulations in neuronal activity, present human counterparts have spatial and temporal limitations. Consequently, the potential applications for a human equivalent are extensive. Here, we demonstrate a novel implementation of contemporary neuroimaging methods called pharmaco-magnetoencephalography. This approach determines the spatial profile of neuronal network oscillatory power …

When Not Thinking Leads To Being And Doing: Stereotype Suppression And The Self, Na Wyer, G Mazzoni, Tj Perfect, G Calvini, Hl Neilens Jan 2010

When Not Thinking Leads To Being And Doing: Stereotype Suppression And The Self, Na Wyer, G Mazzoni, Tj Perfect, G Calvini, Hl Neilens

School of Psychology

Suppressing stereotypes often results in more stereotype use, an effect attributed to heightened stereotype activation. The authors report two experiments examining the consequences of suppression on two self-relevant outcomes: the active self-concept and overt behavior. Participants who suppressed stereotypes incorporated stereotypic traits into their self-concepts and demonstrated stereotype-congruent behavior compared to those who were exposed to the same stereotypes but did not suppress them. These findings address issues emerging from current theories of suppression, priming, and the active self.

Gesturing Meaning: Non-Action Words Activate The Motor System, P Bach, D Griffiths, M Weigelt, Sp Tipper Jan 2010

Gesturing Meaning: Non-Action Words Activate The Motor System, P Bach, D Griffiths, M Weigelt, Sp Tipper

School of Psychology

Across cultures, speakers produce iconic gestures, which add - through the movement of the speakers' hands - a pictorial dimension to the speakers' message. These gestures capture not only the motor content but also the visuospatial content of the message. Here, we provide first evidence for a direct link between the representation of perceptual information and the motor system that can account for these observations. Across four experiments, participants' hand movements captured both shapes that were directly perceived, and shapes that were only implicitly activated by unrelated semantic judgments of object words. These results were obtained even though the objects …

Cognitive Distortions As Social Practices: An Examination Of Cognitive Distortions In Sex Offender Treatment Froma Discursive Psychology Perpective, Tc Auburn Jan 2010

Cognitive Distortions As Social Practices: An Examination Of Cognitive Distortions In Sex Offender Treatment Froma Discursive Psychology Perpective, Tc Auburn

School of Psychology

This article presents a critique of the concept of cognitive distortion as it has been developed within the domain of sex-offender treatment programme theory and practice. Drawing upon a discursive psychology perspective, it is argued that cognitive distortions should not be considered as mental entities but as social practices. This argument is illustrated by closely examining how offenders’ accounts of their offences during sex offender treatment sessions were organised. Recordings and transcriptions of treatment group sessions were analysed for the occurrence of regular patterns of talk and interaction. This analysis focused on how minimisation was achieved through well documented rhetorical …

Visuospatial Tasks Suppress Craving For Cigarettes., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Nathalie Panabokke, David Kavanagh Jan 2010

Visuospatial Tasks Suppress Craving For Cigarettes., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Nathalie Panabokke, David Kavanagh

School of Psychology

The Elaborated Intrusion (EI) theory of desire posits that visual imagery plays a key role in craving. We report a series of experiments testing this hypothesis in a drug addiction context. Experiment 1 showed that a mental visual imagery task with neutral content reduced cigarette craving in abstaining smokers, but that an equivalent auditory task did not. The effect of visual imagery was replicated in Experiment 2, which also showed comparable effects of non-imagery visual working memory interference. Experiment 3 showed that the benefit of visual over auditory interference was not dependent upon imagery being used to induce craving. Experiment …

Less Food For Thought. Impact Of Attentional Instructions On Intrusive Thoughts About Snack Foods., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Helen Batey, Lisa Marie Berry, David J. Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Intrusive thoughts about food may play a role in unhealthy eating behaviours. Food-related thoughts that capture attention can lead to craving and further intrusive thoughts (Kavanagh, Andrade, & May, 2005). We tested whether diverting attention to mental images or bodily sensations would reduce the incidence of intrusive thoughts about snack foods. In two experiments, participants reported their thoughts in response to probes during three 10min periods. In the Baseline and Post-task period, participants were asked to let their mind wander. In the middle, Experimental, period, participants followed mind wandering (Control), thought diversion, or Thought Suppression instructions. Self-directed or Guided Imagery, …
