Facilitating The Teaching-Learning Process Through The Reflective Engagement Of Pre-Service Teachers, Gloria Jean Rodman
Facilitating The Teaching-Learning Process Through The Reflective Engagement Of Pre-Service Teachers, Gloria Jean Rodman
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The repeated use of reflection throughout their teacher preparation experience can be useful in encouraging growth and improving pedagogical knowledge, teaching performance and professional development among pre-service teachers. This study looks at how the reflective engagement of these teachers in a structured classroom activity reinforces the application of the teaching-learning process in the classroom and enables them to construct meaning from that application. It seeks to identify ways in which the teachers engage in reflection; determine their levels of reflective engagement; examine what they discover about teaching through reflection; and establish how this reflection affects their pedagogical ability.

Cross-National Comparisons Of Background And Confidence In Visual Arts And Music Education Of Pre-Service Primary Teachers , Deirdre Russell-Bowie
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper reports the findings of a study on pre-service teachers’ background and confidence in music and visual arts education. The study involved 939 non-specialist pre-service primary teachers from five countries. Initially the paper identifies the students’ perceptions of their background and confidence in relation to music and visual arts education. Secondly it examines any differences between the visual arts and music education background and confidence of Australian students and those from the other four countries. Results indicated that 25% of the subjects agreed or strongly agreed that they had a good background in music education and 16% indicated that …

Self As Teacher: Preliminary Role Identification Of The Potential Teaching Candidate, Lisa A. Gross, Shanan Fitts, Tracy Goodson-Espy, Ann-Marie Clark
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In this study, the researchers used qualitative surveys to explore potential teaching candidates’ preliminary perceptions of self as teacher and examine how roles are identified, defined and constructed in the context of a tutoring lab that provides support to English Language Learners. Prospective candidates’ perceptions of their tutees, children whose cultural identities and backgrounds differ from their own, are also examined. Findings indicate participants’ teaching identities and conceptualizations of their roles as teachers became more specific and elaborated over the course of the semester. Additionally, the significance of multiple practicum experiences in diverse settings for ongoing identity development and for …

Mentors Report On Their Own Mentoring Practices, Peter Hudson
Mentors Report On Their Own Mentoring Practices, Peter Hudson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Implementing an Australian National Curriculum will require targeting both teachers and preservice teachers. Classroom teachers in their roles as mentors are well situated for developing preservice teachers. This mixed-method study presents mentors’ reports on their mentoring of primary preservice teachers (mentees) in mathematics (n=43) and science (n=29). Mentors claimed they mentored the teaching of mathematics more than the teaching of science; 20% or more indicated they did not provide mentoring practices for 25 out of 34 survey items in the science and 9 out of 34 items in the mathematics. Mentors also claimed that professional development on effective mentoring can …
Teachers’ Influence On Integration Of Tools Into Mathematics Teaching, Sibel Yesildere
Teachers’ Influence On Integration Of Tools Into Mathematics Teaching, Sibel Yesildere
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper examines the process through which three pre-service teachers learn to use mathematical tools; it also looks at pre-service teachers’ instrumentation of tools into mathematics teaching. Three pre-service teachers were studying at a primary mathematics teacher training program at Dokuz Eylül University in Turkey. During an eight-week period, workshops were conducted on curriculum tools with pre-service teachers. Subsequently, pre-service teachers’ lessons were observed in real school settings. The findings are underpinned by the theoretical framework based on the instrumental approach to tool use. Results indicate that pre-service teachers had difficulty in applying the appropriate use of tools, and teachers’ …
Misunderstanding Lawyers' Ethics, Monroe H. Freedman, Abbe Smith
Misunderstanding Lawyers' Ethics, Monroe H. Freedman, Abbe Smith
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The title of Daniel Markovits's book, A Modern Legal Ethics, gives the impression that it is a comprehensive treatise on contemporary lawyers' ethics. The contents of the book, however, are both more limited and more expansive than the title suggests. Markovits's treatment of lawyers' ethics concerns itself with what he conceives to be the pervasive guilty conscience of practicing lawyers over their "professional viciousness", and how lawyers can achieve a guilt-free professional identity "worthy of ... commitment." Markovits's goal in the book is to "articulate a powerful and distinctively lawyerly virtue," one that will provide "ethical vindication of [lawyers'] professional …
Undergraduate Music Student Stress And Burnout, Helen Jane Orzel
Undergraduate Music Student Stress And Burnout, Helen Jane Orzel
Master's Theses
Burnout is fatigue and diminished interest caused by long-term stress. It is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. In the university music atmosphere, stress and burnout are prevalent and accepted as part of the culture. Symptoms and causes of general stress and burnout have been well researched, but much less has been presented on college musicians' burnout, let alone how to deal with it. This study examines the sources of stress, burnout, and ways of coping for undergraduate music students.
A questionnaire with both quantitative and open-ended questions was administered during the 2009 spring semester. Participants …
Does Nighttime Television Influence Attitudes Toward Drinking?, Mike Mchone
Does Nighttime Television Influence Attitudes Toward Drinking?, Mike Mchone
Master's Theses
Alcoholism is a problem in the United States. Television portrays individuals drinking alcohol. Is television influencing attitudes toward drinking? An experiment was performed with students from San Josè State University in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications to discover if television would indeed influence them to drink.
Two groups, both Mass Communication classes, participated in an initial survey, and then the test group class viewed a dramatized program in which the main character was depicted drinking glamorously. Both classes then took the same survey again. Results were analyzed via a t-test. Although there was a change in attitude regarding …
If I Could Choose: Internalized Homophobia Of The Queer Cinema Movement, James Joseph Flaherty
If I Could Choose: Internalized Homophobia Of The Queer Cinema Movement, James Joseph Flaherty
Master's Theses
This thesis offers a critical examination of essentialist and constructionist theories of queer identities, with emphasis on portrayals of internalized homophobia in film. The thesis examines three films released at the latter part of the first New Queer Cinema movement (1991 - 2000) - American Beauty (1999), Urbania (2000) and Velvet Goldmine (1998). Using criticisms of Queer as performativity, as theorized by Judith Butler, in addition to the works of Gregory M. Herek, Harry M. Benshoff, Jeffrey Weeks, and other theorists and academics, the thesis analyzes the use of characterization, mise-en-scene, and spatial and temporal relationships in these films as …
Toward A Single-Consciousness: Challenging "Un-American-Ness" Of People Of Color, Bhawana Kamil
Toward A Single-Consciousness: Challenging "Un-American-Ness" Of People Of Color, Bhawana Kamil
Master's Theses
Race is a major axis of social injustice in America. Social injustice is due to both maldistribution of material resources and opportunities and non-recognition or mis-recognition of people of color. One form of mis-recognition is the accusation that a person of color is not a real American, creating a conflict of identities (i.e., racial and American): a double-consciousness. This accusation has its origins in faulty ideas about race, identity, and race-group membership.
This paper presents a new model of identity that addresses these faulty ideas and provides a conceptual structure within which one can consistently maintain a single-consciousness while maintaining …
Visual Framing Of Patriotism And National Identity On The Covers Of Der Spiegel, Andrea Marie Pyka
Visual Framing Of Patriotism And National Identity On The Covers Of Der Spiegel, Andrea Marie Pyka
Master's Theses
This thesis studied how Der Spiegel, a news magazine in Germany, visually framed images of German patriotism and national identity on its front covers between 1947 and 2009. This study specifically examined whether the covers showed an increase in symbols of patriotism and national identity following four major events in Germany. The events included: the building of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany, the adoption of the Euro, and the 2006 World Cup. A framing analysis of the covers showed that there was an increase in symbols of national identity across each of these four events. However, based …
A Phonetic, Phonological, And Morphosyntactic Analysis Of The Mara Language, Michelle Arden
A Phonetic, Phonological, And Morphosyntactic Analysis Of The Mara Language, Michelle Arden
Master's Theses
This thesis presents a linguistic analysis of the Mara language, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in northwest Myanmar and in neighboring districts of India. Data has been gathered through interviews with a native speaker. The analysis includes a full phonetic segment inventory of the dialect and a phonological analysis of contrastive sounds and contextual variants. Sound files embedded in the document illustrate the phonetic system. Mara's distinctive phonetic features include the loss of word-final consonants, a set of voiceless sonorants, pre- and post- aspirated nasals, and lowered and unlowered vowel pairs. The morphosyntax of Mara pronominal words demonstrates a split-ergative case …

Publications
In this study, the factors that affect employee acceptance of information systems security measures were examined by extending the Technology Acceptance Model. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was applied to examine these factors. 174 valid responses from employees from companies in various industry segments in the United States and Canada were analyzed. The results of the statistical analysis indicate that subjective norm moderated by management support showed the strongest effect on intention to use information systems security measures.

Bonobos, Chimpanzees, Gorillas, And Orang Utans Use Feature And Spatial Cues In Two Spatial Memory Tasks, Patricia Kanngiesser, Josep Call
School of Psychology
Animals commonly use feature and spatial strategies when remembering places of interest such as food sources or hiding places. We conducted three experiments with great apes to investigate strategy preferences and factors that may shape them. In the first experiment, we trained 17 apes to remember 12 different food locations on the floor of their sleeping room. The 12 food locations were associated with one feature cue, so that feature and spatial cues were confounded. In a single test session, we brought the cues into conflict and found that apes, irrespective of species, showed a preference for a feature strategy. …

A Tale Of Election Day 2008: Teaching Storytelling Through Repeated Experiences, Stefan H. Krieger, Serge A. Martinez
A Tale Of Election Day 2008: Teaching Storytelling Through Repeated Experiences, Stefan H. Krieger, Serge A. Martinez
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The article was inspired by a one-day project November 4, 2008, when we supervised a number of clinic students representing voters who had been denied the right to vote. As they represented client after client, we noticed significant improvement in their storytelling skills over a very short period, despite having little training in storytelling theory or techniques. Using our Election Day project as a starting point, the article questions the dominant pedagogical model for teaching storytelling, which focuses primarily on teaching storytelling and narrative theory. We propose a new method, based on cognitive science findings about experiential learning, that emphasizes …
Trust And The Reform Of Securites Regulation, Ronald J. Colombo
Trust And The Reform Of Securites Regulation, Ronald J. Colombo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Trust is a critically important ingredient in the recipes for a successful economy and a well-functioning securities market. Due to scandals, ranging in nature from massive incompetence, to massive irresponsibility, to massive fraud, investor trust is in shorter supply today than in years past. This is troubling, and commentators, policy makers, and industry leaders have all recognized the need for trust's restoration.
As in times of similar crises, many have turned to law and regulation for the answers to our problems. The imposition of additional regulatory oversight, safeguards, and remedies, some advocate, can help resuscitate investor trust. These advocates have …

Gothic Representations: History, Literature, And Film, Daniel Gould
Gothic Representations: History, Literature, And Film, Daniel Gould
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Gothic storytelling has come a long way since the publication of Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto in 1764. This short novel created the standard motifs and tropes that will forever be associated with the genre-the destitute castle, the foreboding atmosphere, supernatural or inexplicable events, omens, prophecies, heroes, villains, and of course, a deteriorating world facilitated by the unconscious evils within hwnanity causing the complete destabilization of society.
This paper will examine the evolution of Gothic fiction and how it has been represented from its romantic heritage and Victorian upbringing to the American Gothic traditions of the nineteenth century and …

Freedom's Disciple : The Life, Music, And Impact Of Hazel Dickens, Kelly Landers
Freedom's Disciple : The Life, Music, And Impact Of Hazel Dickens, Kelly Landers
Honors Theses
The work of Appalachian musician Hazel Dickens sheds light on many of the musical and cultural changes in our country. Dickens used her music as a voice for the disadvantaged, advocating for improvements in the lives of miners, working-class people, and women, and pushing for all to be treated equally. A wonderful songwriter, performer, and overall musician, Dickens saw her career, music, and beliefs as inextricably linked, and so this thesis will explore her leadership by analyzing her songs and her history.
Understanding Rejection Across Ingroups And Outgroups, Prasant Dubey
Understanding Rejection Across Ingroups And Outgroups, Prasant Dubey
Honors Theses
Black and White male undergraduates from the University of Richmond participated in a study addressing rejection. The purpose was to discover how responses to rejection vary amongst individuals who are rejected by their in-group versus their out-group. In other words, is a white male more likely to be impacted by rejection from another white male (a member of the in- group) or a black male (a member of the out-group)? Likewise, it was interesting to note how black individuals respond differently to rejection by the in-group and out-group. Responses to rejection feedback, regarding self-esteem, attributions to rejection, cognitive capacity, and …

Test At Your Own Risk: Your Genetic Report Card And The Direct-To-Consumer Duty To Secure Informed Consent, Deepthy Kishore
Test At Your Own Risk: Your Genetic Report Card And The Direct-To-Consumer Duty To Secure Informed Consent, Deepthy Kishore
Emory Law Journal
Selling access to individual genetic information has transposed the physician-patient relationship into a company-consumer context, calling for a novel examination of how consumer and patient protections overlap and where federal regulation ends and tort law begins. This Comment applies principles of products liability and informed consent to the context of genetic testing to argue that tort liability, rather than greater regulation of genetic tests, is the best way to protect consumers of DTC genetic testing. This Comment demonstrates that without professional assistance, consumers risk misinterpreting the meaning of their genetic test results and may even be driven to take drastic …

Superhuman In The Octagon, Imperfect In The Courtroom: Assessing The Culpability Of Martial Artists Who Kill During Street Fights, Stephen Michael Ian Kunen
Emory Law Journal
This Comment offers a new way for subjective characteristics to influence the criminal law of self-defense. Specifically, this Comment proposes a higher standard of self-defense for martial artists who kill their opponents outside competition settings, by denying the martial artists, as a matter of law, the ability to claim two distinct partial defenses: imperfect self-defense and provocation. For a martial artist, a proportional use of force should rarely require killing the aggressor because martial artists possess special fighting skills that are designed to subdue opponents without killing them. Courts should allow juries to judge a martial artist¿s culpability for homicidal …
