Prepared Piano Of John Cage, Inara De Barros Ferreira Jan 2010

Prepared Piano Of John Cage, Inara De Barros Ferreira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

When John Cage invented the prepared piano in 1940, he created a sound world and body of music unlike anything heard before. The innovative music he wrote for prepared piano requires a completely new approach to performance, and expands our understanding of the piano's capabilities. This study will examine the main prepared piano works by John Cage, with a detailed analysis of the Sonatas and Interludes. Cage's Table of Preparations will be examined to establish an aesthetic rationale for this preparation. Different modes of listening will be explored through a selection of the Sonatas and Interludes recorded in three different …

Preventing The Next Abu Gharib, Paul. Hofacker Jan 2010

Preventing The Next Abu Gharib, Paul. Hofacker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The cruelty of Military Police guards at Abu Ghraib prison contributed to American shame and questions regarding how such cruelty emerges. The accepted approach of "situational attribution theory" - based upon Zimbardo's (1973, 2007) social psychological perceptions and results of the Stanford Prison Experiment - proposed that personality or "disposition" has little role in the emergence of such cruelty. Termed "institutional cruelty," this manuscript presents the possibility that understandings and preventive measures afforded by situational attribution theory can be extended via acknowledgement of a greater role played by disposition. Psychoanalytic and object relations approaches are presented to this end. The …

Rastafari Presence In Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, And Song Of Solomon, Nicole Racquel Carr Jan 2010

Rastafari Presence In Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, And Song Of Solomon, Nicole Racquel Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Literary scholars frequently analyze the allusions to Western Christianity apparent in Toni Morrison's novels, but these studies overlook the ways in which some of her novels are informed by a Caribbean presence. This study argues that Rastafari themes, symbols, and ideologies are recurrent in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon. Rastafari is a social movement primarily concerned with restoring the image of Africa to a holy place. A Rastafari analysis of these texts broadens the literary spectrum to suggest that these novels highlight Morrison's attempt to write about the multifaceted element of the black community, which remains …

Regional Differences In Migratory Activity By Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta), Jeffrey Guertin Jan 2010

Regional Differences In Migratory Activity By Hatchling Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta), Jeffrey Guertin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There are four distinct subpopulations of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in Florida as determined behaviorally by geographic fidelity, and genetically by mitochondrial haplotypes. The South Florida subpopulation consists of females nesting on the southeastern and southwestern coasts of Florida and their offspring. Previous research shows that west coast hatchlings exhibit higher levels of nocturnal swimming during the postfrenzy period than east coast hatchlings. This study attempted to determine how these differences in migratory behavior develop. A reciprocal translocation experiment was conducted to distinguish between environmental and genetic factors. No consistent differences in hatchling swimming behavior were seen based on …

Remote Gaming On Resource Constrained Devices, Waazim. Reza Jan 2010

Remote Gaming On Resource Constrained Devices, Waazim. Reza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Games have become important applications on mobile devices. A mobile gaming approach known as remote gaming is being developed to support games on low cost mobile devices. In the remote gaming approach, the responsibility of rendering a game and advancing the game play is put on remote servers instead of the resource constrained mobile devices. The games rendered on the servers are encoded as video and streamed to mobile devices. Mobile devices gather user input and stream the commands back to the servers to advance game play. With this solution, mobile devices with video playback and network connectivity can become …

Retrospective Analysis Of Sea Turtle Nest Depredation Patterns At Canaveral National Seashore, Florida, Rachel. Welicky Jan 2010

Retrospective Analysis Of Sea Turtle Nest Depredation Patterns At Canaveral National Seashore, Florida, Rachel. Welicky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Nest predation can significantly reduce hatchling recruitment in sea turtle populations. This study uses 20 years of data from Canaveral National Seashore, Florida, which has pristine and altered beaches. Chi-square tests were used to determine if secondary predation events were related to the nest's primary depredation event. To determine if human beach use and nest predation are spatially or temporally linked, we ranked human beach use and examined predation frequency across all screened and marked nests (n=40,441). Lastly, I quantified nest predation risk spatially and temporally. I found that primary predation increases the chance of a nest suffering subsequent predation. …

Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates Jan 2010

Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of multiple males concurrently occupy a female's reproductive tract and compete for fertilization. Sperm competition may have been a recurrent adaptive problem over human evolutionary history. Women's orgasm may facilitate retention of a particular man's sperm. I therefore hypothesized that men experiencing greater sperm competition risk will be particularly interested in the occurrence of their partner's copulatory orgasm. Men who are more satisfied with and invested in their relationship may experience greater costs in the event of sperm competition and potential cuckoldry. Therefore, these men may be more interested in ensuring their partner's copulatory …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Blind Separation Of Speech Mixtures, Savaskan. Bulek Jan 2010

Sensitivity Analysis Of Blind Separation Of Speech Mixtures, Savaskan. Bulek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Blind source separation (BSS) refers to a class of methods by which multiple sensor signals are combined with the aim of estimating the original source signals. Independent component analysis (ICA) is one such method that effectively resolves static linear combinations of independent non-Gaussian distributions. We propose a method that can track variations in the mixing system by seeking a compromise between adaptive and block methods by using mini-batches. The resulting permutation indeterminacy is resolved based on the correlation continuity principle. Methods employing higher order cumulants in the separation criterion are susceptible to outliers in the finite sample case. We propose …

She Just Snapped, Megan. Tomei Jan 2010

She Just Snapped, Megan. Tomei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Snapped, a documentary style show profiling female killers, is one of Oxygens longest running hit franchises. This thesis analyzes, through both the frames of feminist theory and rhetoric, the way the show perpetuates and plays upon the myth of feminine evil as well as the stereotype of women as weak, hysterical agents in need of control. Snapped showcases women who start out as seemingly normal but then enact horrendous crimes. The use of women that the audience can identify with but then later fear creates a cathartic experience in which female audience members can be vicariously cleansed of any dangerous …

South Asian Diaspora In The Caribbean, Savena. Budhu Jan 2010

South Asian Diaspora In The Caribbean, Savena. Budhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation proposes a two-part thesis on the South Asian diaspora in the Caribbean within contemporary Indo-Guyanese literature. First, Indo-Guyanese writers such as David Dabydeen, Oonya Kempadoo, and Narmala Shewcharan are using the genre of historical fiction to posit counter narratives that undermine dominant narratives of South Asian culture and gender roles. Second, even as these writers struggle against dominant narratives, their texts reinscribe the colonial discourse and rearticulate racial stereotypes. As argued in this dissertation, the dismal historical realities of ethnic tensions and failed anti-colonial tactics do not sufficiently address the flexible strategies often chosen by the characters and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Much of the world's oceans lie below a depth of 200 meters, but very little is known about the creatures that inhabit these deep-sea environments. The deep-sea fish family Melamphaidae (Stephanoberyciformes) is one such example of an understudied group of fishes. Samples from the MAR-ECO (www.mar-eco.no) project represent one of the largest melamphaid collections, providing an ideal opportunity to gain information on this important, but understudied, family of fishes. The key to the family presented here is the first updated, comprehensive key since those produced by Ebeling and Weed (1963) and Keene (1987). Samples from the 2004 MAR-ECO cruise and …

The effects of epistemic motives and individual social structure on individual actions, the organizing …

Timing Of Growth Spurts In Neanderthals, Amy C. Lupo Jan 2010

Timing Of Growth Spurts In Neanderthals, Amy C. Lupo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The timing of skeletal growth spurts in modern humans is unique among mammals. In modern humans, peak growth occurs after puberty during the adolescent period, whereas large-bodied non-human primates exhibit an earlier juvenile growth spurt. Based on limited data, previous researchers have suggested that Neanderthals experienced a late, modern human-like adolescent growth spurt. In this study, I examined the timing of stature and facial growth spurts in Neanderthals to test the hypothesis that Neanderthals grew like modern humans. In order to assess the timing of Neanderthal growth spurts, I plotted a non-human primate regression estimate of age at puberty onto …

Transit Signal Priority For Emergency Evacuation, Scott A. Parr Jan 2010

Transit Signal Priority For Emergency Evacuation, Scott A. Parr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The goal of this research is to answer a single question. During an urban evacuation, is it advisable for regional planners to allow transit units signal priority in cases where police assisted traffic controls are not an option? Standard practice for emergency evacuation is to place police officers at intersection throughout the evacuation area. However, this is not always an option where environmental factors such as the presence of fire, chemical plume, radioactive fallout (nuclear contaminated wind and dust) do not permit police presence. Results from a case study conducted on Washington D.C. show that it would take four non-prioritized …

Local Fragmentation As Immigration Regulation, Rick Su Jan 2010

Local Fragmentation As Immigration Regulation, Rick Su

Journal Articles

Immigration scholars have traditionally focused on the role of national borders and the significance of nation-state citizenship. At the same time, local government scholars have called attention to the significance of local boundaries, the consequence of municipal residency, and the influence of the two on the fragmentation of American society. This paper explores the interplay between these two mechanisms of spatial and community controls. Emphasizing their doctrinal and historic commonalities, this article suggests that the legal structure responsible for local fragmentation can be understood as second-order immigration regulation. It is a mechanism that allows for finer regulatory control than the …
