Coating is one of the effective methods used in controlled release dosage form. Lots of variety in the form of a hydrophilic polymer excipient that is used to control the drug release many polymers that can be used for coating purposes, but only a few have been known to serve as a polymeric coating which functions to control the rate of drug release Pregelatinized cassava starch (PCS) is a physically modified starch. The purposes of the study were to improve functionality of PCS with making coprocess composed of PCS and methylcellulose (MC) by proportionally variation, which are 2:1, 3:1, and …

Fluoride ion is one of the compounds that are known to have benefits in the prevention of dental caries when used in certain concentrations, but also hasnegative effects that may cause the occurrence of dental and bone fluorosis when the intake was in excessive concentration. One of the fluoride intakes comes fromwater that is consumed. The aim of this research was to identify and measurefluoride ion levels in groundwater and piped water that used as drinking water consumption in the community. Measurement of fluoride ion concentration isdone by using visible spectrophotometry at the maximum wavelength of 586 nmusing the sodium …

Analisis Asam Valproat Dalam Plasma Secara Kromatografi Gas, Ani Susanti, Yahdiana Harahap, Harmita Harmita

Majalah Ilmu Kefarmasian

Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant drug that works by increasing the levels of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Determination of valproic acid is quite difficult because it has no chromophore groups in its structure. Aa analytical method using gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector for the determination of valproic acid in human plasma has been developed and optimized. Valproic acid was extracted from plasma by liquid-liquid extraction method using diethyl ether. The optimum analysis conditions for valproic acid in plasma were achieved by regulated gas chromatography injector and detector at a temperature of 250oC and temperature programming with an initial temperature …

Time-Varying Harmonic Analyzer Prototype, Diego F. Fabri, Carlos H. N. Martins, Leandro R. M. Silva, Carlos A. Duque

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This paper presents a time-varying harmonic analyzer based on the Sliding Window DFT implemented on a DSP platform. The harmonic decomposition is carried out using the TMS320F28027 digital signal processor, and the samples of the decomposed signal are sent to a PC based computer using serial interface. Several real cases are analyzed, revealing the time-varying behavior of the harmonic component. Different from commercial harmonic analyzer, the prototype presented in this paper uses a different way to visualize the harmonic components, based on time decomposition approach. This new visualization of time-varying harmonics might help engineers and researchers to develop new insights …

A comprehensive seafloor biomass and abundance database has been constructed from 24 oceanographic institutions worldwide within the Census of Marine Life (CoML) field projects. The machine-learning algorithm, Random Forests, was employed to model and predict seafloor standing stocks from surface primary production, water-column integrated and export particulate organic matter (POM), seafloor relief, and bottom water properties. The predictive models explain 63% to 88% of stock variance among the major size groups. Individual and composite maps of predicted global seafloor biomass and abundance are generated for bacteria, meiofauna, macrofauna, and megafauna (invertebrates and fishes). Patterns of benthic standing stocks were positive …

Assessing Survival On Milliontreesnyc Reforestation Sites, Brady L. Simmons

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The City of New York Parks & Recreation’s (Parks) Natural Resources Group (NRG) is leading a large scale, citywide reforestation effort as part of the MillionTreesNYC goal to plant 450,000 trees in parks across the city. The reforestation monitoring study was developed as one tool to test the success of the reforestation efforts. This study addresses the basic survivability and health of the trees since planting began in the fall of 2007. This study captured the container trees planted by In house staff, volunteer groups, and contractors.

Diversity And Conservation Of Butterflies In The New York City Metropolitan Area, Kevin C. Matteson, Nell Roberts Dec 2010

Diversity And Conservation Of Butterflies In The New York City Metropolitan Area, Kevin C. Matteson, Nell Roberts

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Butterflies are charismatic microfauna that provide opportunities for humans living in urbanized landscapes to directly experience biodiversity. However, very little has been published on which butterfly species currently persist in densely populated urban landscapes, such as the New York City metropolitan area. As a first step towards conservation of butterflies in this heavily populated landscape, we analyzed data on butterfly sightings in the five boroughs of New York City and adjacent counties from January 2001 to November 2009. In total, we compiled 12,732 reported sightings (5822 from within NYC limits) representing 106 butterfly species (87 from within NYC limits) that …

Sustainable Urban Forest Management Planning Using Criteria And Indicators, W Andrew Kenny, Philip J. Van Wassenaer, Alexander Satel

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This poster discusses how Criteria and Indicators (C&I) for success in sustainable urban forest management, first outlined by Clark et al. (1997), can be successfully applied as tools to improve Strategic Urban Forest Management planning. It presents updates and modifications to the original tables, developed by van Wassenaer, Kenney and Satel (in press) to improve their application in strategic planning. A case study demonstrates how C&I were used to evaluate current management practices in the Town of Oakville, Ontario. This poster also outlines the strategic planning framework used in the preparation of the Oakville Plan, and presents it as a …

Comparative Study Of Field Enhancement Between Isolated And Coupled Metal Nanoparticles: An Analytical Approach, Greg Sun, Jacob B. Khurgin Dec 2010

Comparative Study Of Field Enhancement Between Isolated And Coupled Metal Nanoparticles: An Analytical Approach, Greg Sun, Jacob B. Khurgin

Physics Faculty Publications

We present an analytical model that takes into account the coupling between the surface plasmon modes in complex metal nanostructures. We apply this model to evaluate the field enhancement in the gap of two coupled Au metal spheres embedded in GaN dielectric and compare the result with that obtained by the single sphere. The results show additional improvement can be obtained in the gap depending on the width of the gap. This approach offers a clear physical insight for the enhancement and a straightforward method for optimization.

Referrals To A Regional Allergy Clinic - An Eleven Year Audit., Ray B. Jones, Paul Hewson, Edward R. Kaminski

School of Nursing and Midwifery

BACKGROUND: Allergy is a serious and apparently increasing public health problem yet relatively little is known about the types of allergy seen in routine tertiary practice, including their spatial distribution, co-occurrence or referral patterns. This study reviewed referrals over an eleven year period to a regional allergy clinic that had a well defined geographical boundary. For those patients confirmed as having an allergy we explored: (i) differences over time and by demographics, (ii) types of allergy, (iii) co-occurrence, and (iv) spatial distributions. METHODS: Data were extracted from consultant letters to GPs, from September 1998 to September 2009, for patients confirmed …

Stewardship In Distance Education: A Comparative Analysis Of Technologies That Support Student Learning, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw

Christian Perspectives in Education

Effectively facilitating the growth of learners demonstrates prudent stewardship (Galatians 6:10; Genesis 2:15). As wise stewards of what God has entrusted to them, Christian educators are challenged to identify factors critical for supporting students’ learning in whatever environment they are teaching. When teaching in the online environment, this includes adopting technological applications to support learning. This study compared the use of two technological applications and their affect on student learning. Findings provided evidence that online graduate learners who used the combination of a content management system and e-conferencing system reported significantly higher perceptions of learning than learners who used only …
