Endosomal maturation is critical for accurate and efficient cargo transport through endosomal compartments. Here we identify a mutation of the novel Drosophila gene, ema (endosomal maturation defective) in a screen for abnormal synaptic overgrowth and defective protein trafficking. Ema is an endosomal membrane protein required for trafficking of fluid-phase and receptor-mediated endocytic cargos. In the ema mutant, enlarged endosomal compartments accumulate as endosomal maturation fails, with early and late endosomes unable to progress into mature degradative late endosomes and lysosomes. Defective endosomal down-regulation of BMP signaling is responsible for the abnormal synaptic overgrowth. Ema binds to and genetically interacts with …

“Everything Has Changed”: Narratives Of The Vietnamese American Community In Post-Katrina Mississippi, Yoosun Park, Joshua Miller, Bao Chau Van
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
In this qualitative study of the Vietnamese American community of Biloxi, Mississippi, conducted three years after Katrina, we attended not only to individual experiences but to the relationship of individuals to their collective and social worlds. The interlocked relationship of individual and collective loss and recovery are clearly demonstrated in respondents’ narratives. The neighborhood and community of Little Saigon was significant not only as a symbolic source of identity but as a protected and familiar space of residence, livelihood, and social connections. The post-Katrina changes in the neighborhood are, in multiple ways, changing participants’ experience of and relationship to their …

Tablet Personal Computer Integration In Higher Education: Applying The Unified Theory Of Acceptance And Use Technology Model To Understand Supporting Factors, Mark Moran, Mark Hawkes, Omar F. El-Gayar
Research & Publications
Many educational institutions have implemented ubiquitous or required laptop, notebook, or tablet personal computing programs for their students. Yet, limited evidence exists to validate integration and acceptance of the technology among student populations. This research examines student acceptance of mobile computing devices using a modification of the "Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology" (UTAUT) recently developed by leading researchers in the technology acceptance field. The objective of the study is to identify the variance of selected acceptance elements that contribute to the overall behavioral intent to use Tablet PCs (TPC). These outcomes are then used as a means …

Solar Wind And Energy Resource Assessment (Swera): A Usability Case Study, Lucas Michels, Omar F. El-Gayar, Matthew J. Wills
Research & Publications
The Solar Wind and Energy Resource Assessment (SWERA) project focused on providing renewable energy planning resources to the public. Examples include wind, solar, and hydro assessments. A major component of the SWERA website is the archive search. This provides for a discovery DSS upon which users can find and access renewable energy data and supporting models. The RREX component of SWERA provides a visualization DSS as an addition to the website archive. RREX provides the discovery through a couple different avenues. RREX maps the renewable energy data that it provides along with a graphing application of the same data. RREX …

Clinical Knowledge Management Systems: Literature Review And Research Issues For Information Systems, Matthew J. Wills, Surendra Sarnikar, Omar F. El-Gayar, Amit Deokar
Research & Publications
Knowledge Management (KM) has emerged as a possible solution to many of the challenges facing U.S. and international healthcare systems. These challenges include concerns regarding the safety and quality of patient care, critical inefficiency, disparate technologies and information standards, rapidly rising costs and clinical information overload. In this paper, we focus on clinical knowledge management systems (CKMS) research. The objectives of the paper are to evaluate the current state of knowledge management systems diffusion in the clinical setting, assess the present status and focus of CKMS research efforts, and identify research gaps and opportunities for future work across the medical …
A Web-Based Multi-Perspective Decision Support System For Information Security Planning, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz
A Web-Based Multi-Perspective Decision Support System For Information Security Planning, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz
Research & Publications
With the increasing exposure and vulnerability to cyber attacks, it becomes necessary to develop methodologies and systems that are capable of dealing with the complex and multifaceted nature of decision situations encountered in security planning and management. In this paper we present the theoretical basis, architecture and design of a web-based multi-perspective decision support system (DSS) and an underlying decision multi-criteria decision framework that is consistent with security and decision theory. The system is illustrated through a multi-stakeholder scenario that captures the complexity encountered in a multi-criteria security control selection decision problem.

Carefully collected airborne imagery demonstrates the ability to see water surface features as well as shallow bottom features such as submerged vegetation and manmade targets. Traditional photogrammetric imagery and airborne digital imagery both suffer from a loss in image clarity due to a number of factors, including capillary and small gravity waves, the water column or in-situ constituents. The use of submerged as well as surface man-made calibration targets deployed during airborne or in-situ subsurface image acquisitions forms a preliminary basis for correcting imagery in order to improve subsurface and surface features and their detection. Methods presented as well as …

Investigation And Modeling Of Ice Fracture In Cold Ocean Engineering Applications, Rocky S. Taylor
Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports
Ice conditions present a significant challenge in the design of ships and structures for the development of offshore energy resources in cold ocean environments. Many regions throughout the world including Alaska, Canada, Russia, Norway, Kazakhstan and China are developing offshore energy resources in ice-prone environments. The growth and stability of the global economy is closely linked to that of our energy supply, and offshore industrial activity in Northern regions has increased significantly in recent years. One of the most significant engineering challenges when designing structures for ice environments is the estimation of design ice loads. The design load scenario for …
