Mahalanobis Taguchi System (Mts) As A Prognostics Tool For Rolling Element Bearing Failures, Ahmet Soylemezoglu, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Can Saygin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel Mahalanobis-Taguchi system (MTS)-Based fault detection, isolation, and prognostics scheme is presented. the proposed data-driven scheme utilizes the Mahalanobis distance (MD)-Based fault clustering and the progression of MD values over time. MD thresholds derived from the clustering analysis are used for fault detection and isolation. When a fault is detected, the prognostics scheme, which monitors the progression of the MD values, is initiated. Then, using a linear approximation, time to failure is estimated. the performance of the scheme has been validated via experiments performed on rolling element bearings inside the spindle headstock of a microcomputer numerical …

Route Change Decision Making By Hurricane Evacuees Facing Congestion, R. Michael Robinson, Asad Khattak Jan 2010

Route Change Decision Making By Hurricane Evacuees Facing Congestion, R. Michael Robinson, Asad Khattak

VMASC Publications

Successful evacuations of metropolitan areas require overcoming unexpected congestion that reduces traffic flows. Congestion may result from accidents, incidents, or other events that reduce road capacity. Traffic professionals and emergency managers may promote deviations from planned routes to bypass an area of congestion and speed mass exit. However, some route changes may actually reduce traffic flow rates, and in these cases decision makers may want to discourage use of alternate routes. By using results of a behavioral survey of potential hurricane evacuees, this study identifies variables associated with the decision to alter routes and also identifies frequently used information sources. …

Interactive Display Of Complex Political Data In An Effort To Promote Social Change, Tyler Travitz Jan 2010

Interactive Display Of Complex Political Data In An Effort To Promote Social Change, Tyler Travitz

Theses

Despite the fact that hard and fast data on politicians, such as voting records and campaign funding, is readily available on the Internet it is under-utilized in decision-making during the voting process. This may be due to how the data is presented. This project explores ways to make that data accessible and interactive through a Flash application/website, in a way that truly engages the user.

Strongest, Michael Auritt Jan 2010

Strongest, Michael Auritt

Theses

"Strongest" is a short film, produced in the School of Film and Animation at RIT. It is a science-fiction film noir about a woman, Rose, who is searching for her husband. In the process of searching for him, she uncovers his dark secrets and strange scientific experiments. The film was shot almost exclusively using a greenscreen with backgrounds and other effects being placed in post-production. This manuscript examines the filmmaking process from script writing to shooting to completed film. During the stages of preproduction, production, and post-production many challenges were faced. Some of these challenges were overcome to produce quality …

Free-Carrier Effects In Polycrystalline Silicon-On-Insulator Photonic Devices, Oshoriamhe Ogah

Theses

Photonic systems integrated into microelectronic systems using the well established integrated chips fabrication technologies offer immense opportunity in overcoming the bandwidth and power limitations IC faces. The use of deposited polycrystalline silicon in the fabrication of photonic devices has the potential of offering monolithic integration, promising electrical and optical properties, under optimized micro-fabrication, and lower costs. In this thesis, the design, fabrication and optical testing of waveguide devices on polycrystalline silicon platform is presented. Single mode polysilicon waveguide devices were fabricated at the RIT SMFL. The polysilicon waveguides fabricated successfully coupled and guided light. The transmission was measured over several …

Particle Deposition In Replica Healthy And Emphysematous Alveolar Models Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Edward Harding Jr Jan 2010

Particle Deposition In Replica Healthy And Emphysematous Alveolar Models Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Edward Harding Jr

Theses

Particle deposition in the pulmonary region of the lung has gained increasing interest in the past years. Of particular interest are nano-sized particles, because they have the potential of crossing the blood-gas barrier and into the capillaries. Many factors contribute to how and where particles deposit, such as lung morphology, breathing conditions, fluid flow characteristics, and alveolar wall movement. These many factors make simulating particle deposition in the alveoli difficult. The experimental in vivo studies have commonly used micron sized particles and there is a lack of data for smaller sized particles. Due to these many factors, deposition in the …

A Pca Based Method For Image And Video Pose Sequencing, James Massaro Jan 2010

A Pca Based Method For Image And Video Pose Sequencing, James Massaro

Theses

Problems exist in image sequence processing that require an ordered set of object views. In some cases, multiple angled images are acquired in random order and the angle of view information is not available. When this occurs, the poses have to be put into proper order. For example, in databases containing images of an object or scene taken over a period of time, each image pose or angled-view with respect to the camera or scene is unknown. This is important to achieve a complete or partial three-dimensional reconstruction. Other applications exist in photogrammetry, machine vision, computer-aided design, and military intelligence. …

Exploration Of Non-Chemically Amplified Resists Based On Dissolution Inhibitors For 193 Nm Lithography, Burak Baylav Jan 2010

Exploration Of Non-Chemically Amplified Resists Based On Dissolution Inhibitors For 193 Nm Lithography, Burak Baylav

Theses

Research described in this work includes exploration of new resist systems that can be used for 193 nm lithography. Most of the conventional 193 nm resists rely on chemical amplification in which a small amount of photogenerated acid can catalyze many reactions. Even though the sensitivity is improved drastically with such a mechanism, the printed profiles are known to be suffering from line edge roughness (LER) and image blurring. Furthermore, the resolution is limited by the diffusion length of the generated acid. For sub-32 nm technology nodes, specified LER criterion cannot be satisfied by utilizing chemically amplified resists (CAR). However, …

The Rhetorical Construction Of Reader-Writer Identities In Contemporary Fiction Reviews, Katherine G. Giannisis

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The New York Times Book Review is a prestigious, well-known, and widely-read publication. Each Sunday, countless readers turn to the reviews published in the Times for critiques of recently released contemporary fiction. The reviews are written by individuals of experience: novelists, short-story writers, nonfiction writers, professors of Literature, and editors of literary publications. However, in recent years, many websites have begun to publish online book reviews written by everyday readers. Goodreads.com, created in December 2006, is a social networking site devoted solely to reviewing and discussing books. My project examines the identity of the reviewer who writes for The New …

"Surely It Deserves A Name:" Homosexual Discourse Among Ellis, Carpenter, And Symonds, Jonathan E. Coleman Jan 2010

"Surely It Deserves A Name:" Homosexual Discourse Among Ellis, Carpenter, And Symonds, Jonathan E. Coleman

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis argues that British scholars Havelock Ellis, John Addington Symonds, and Edward Carpenter viewed themselves as somewhat rebellious, attempting to reconstruct norms of sexuality, particularly those concerning homosexuality. To do so, they invoked the well‐established constructions of class, gender, and sex. Nevertheless, in spite of their attempts problematize these constructions, they simultaneously worked within and reinforced them. Ellis, Carpenter and Symonds desired to change widelyheld perceptions of homosexuality and while doing so, alter notions of class, gender, and sex. These scholars asserted that homosexual relationships could exist across the divides of the class‐system, helping to engender a greater cross‐class …

Control Force Estimation In Seismic Building Design, Xiaozhe Zhang, Franklin Y. Cheng Jan 2010

Control Force Estimation In Seismic Building Design, Xiaozhe Zhang, Franklin Y. Cheng

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents two approaches of estimating the control force magnitude in the building structure's seismic design. One is by spectrum average in frequency domain, and the other is by nondeterministic Monte Carlo analysis in time domain. the spectrum method is proposed to find the estimation by averaging the system's frequency response with an earthquake spectrum as a weighting factor. the nondeterministic method is based on sets of potential ground motions generated numerically. the approaches are developed in the concept of performance design, with studies based on the site potential seismic hazard and presenting results at different levels of displacement …

Morphological Differences Among Eyeless Amphipods In The Genus Stygobromus Dwelling In Different Subterranean Habitats, David C. Culver, John R. Holsinger, Mary C. Christman, Tanja Pipan Jan 2010

Morphological Differences Among Eyeless Amphipods In The Genus Stygobromus Dwelling In Different Subterranean Habitats, David C. Culver, John R. Holsinger, Mary C. Christman, Tanja Pipan

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The amphipod genus Stygobromus occurs in a variety of subterranean habitats in North America, including caves, phreatic (groundwater) lakes, and superficial subterranean habitats (seeps and epikarst). The habitats share the absence of light but differ in other features, such as pore size of the habitat, available food, and degree of seasonality. Measurements of body size, antennal size, and antennal segment number of type specimens were compared for 56 species occurring in the eastern United States. Except for differences in body size, differences among species in the four different habitats were not significant. Body size was related to relative pore size …

Porphyriticus) In General Davis Cave, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, Matthew L. Niemiller, Michael S. Osbourn, Dante B. Fenolio, Thomas K. Pauley, Brian T. Miller, John R. Holsinger

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The West Virginia Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus subterraneus) is one of four obligate cave-dwelling species of plethodontid salamanders found east of the Mississippi River in the United States. This species is endemic to a single cave system; General Davis Cave, in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, where it is syntopic with the closely-related Spring Salamander (G. porphyriticus). Accordingly, the West Virginia Spring Salamander is a species of critical conservation concern. Because of it's conservation status and lack of data regarding the ecology and life history, particularly about population trends, we present data on relative abundance of and habitat …

Spanish-Creole Characteristics In The Dialect Of People With African Origins In Port Limón, Costa Rica, Maren Benn

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This research project examines the language spoken by the Afro-Caribbean population in Port Limón, Costa Rica. This language resulted from the cultural blend of peoples from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, and other Caribbean islands that immigrated to the Atlantic coast region of Costa Rica in the 1870's. This language is different from the language spoken in the rest of the country because of its British English language influence that came in contact with the local Spanish language. Issues regarding attitude toward this language in Costa Rica are addressed in this project. In the course of time, as with other …

Bundling Public And Private Goods: The Market For Sustainable Organics, Margot J. Pollans Jan 2010

Bundling Public And Private Goods: The Market For Sustainable Organics, Margot J. Pollans

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Modern agriculture has vast environmental externalities. The pesticides, fertilizers, and sediments in irrigation runoff pollute surface and groundwater; single-crop farms destroy biodiversity; and massive amounts of fossil fuels are burned in agricultural production, post-harvest processing, and shipping. Nevertheless, farming operations have largely escaped the post-1970 expansion of federal environmental regulation. Compounding the problem, federal farm policy has encouraged the very farming practices that most cause this degradation.

In 1990, Congress passed the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA), which created an organic food certification and labeling system. While OFPA's primary purposes are to facilitate the growth of the organic sector and …

Emerging Law Addressing Climate Change And Water, Elizabeth Burleson Jan 2010

Emerging Law Addressing Climate Change And Water, Elizabeth Burleson

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The World Economic Forum recognizes that while restrictions on energy affect water systems and vise versa, energy and water policy are rarely coordinated. The International Panel on Climate Change predicts that wet places will become wetter and dry places will become dryer. Transboundary water, energy and climate coordination can occur through international consensus building.

Essential Skills For Evidence-Based Practice: Statistics For Therapy Questions, Jeanne T. Grace Jan 2010

Essential Skills For Evidence-Based Practice: Statistics For Therapy Questions, Jeanne T. Grace

Individual Open Access Articles

Evidence to support the effectiveness of therapies commonly compares the outcomes between a group of individuals who received the therapy and a group of individuals who did not. Nurses must be able to interpret the statistics used to report these comparisons to determine not only whether there is a “real” (i.e. statistically significant) difference between the outcomes of the groups, but also whether that difference is large enough and precise enough to be clinically meaningful. The statistics involved depend on whether the outcome is expressed as a categorical (e.g. yes/no) or a continuous (e.g. pounds, length of stay) measure. When …

Amino Acid Transport In Thermophiles: Characterization Of An Arginine-Binding Protein In Thermotoga Maritima, Matthew S. Luchansky, Bryan S. Der, Sabato D'Auria, Gabriella Pocsfalvi, Luisa Iozzion, Daniela Marasco, Jonathan D. Dattelbaum

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Members of the periplasmic binding protein superfamily are involved in the selective passage of ligands through bacterial cell membranes. The hyperthermophilic eubacterium Thermotoga maritima was found to encode a highly stable and specific periplasmic arginine-binding protein (TM0593). Following signal sequence removal and overexpression in Escherichia coli, TM0593 was purified by thermoprecipitation and affinity chromatography. The ultra-stable protein with a monomeric molecular weight of 27.7 kDa was found to exist as both a homodimer and homotrimer at appreciable concentrations even under strongly denaturing conditions, with an estimated transition temperature of 116 °C. Its multimeric structure may provide further evidence of …

ABC transport systems provide selective passage of metabolites across cell membranes and typically require the presence of a soluble binding protein with high specificity to a specific ligand. In addition to their primary role in nutrient gathering, the binding proteins associated with bacterial transport systems have been studied for their potential to serve as design scaffolds for the development of fluorescent protein biosensors. In this work, we used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the physicochemical properties of a hyperthermophilic binding protein from Thermotoga maritima. We demonstrated preferential binding for the polar amino acid arginine …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Several marine sponges sequester high concentrations of carotenoids in their tissues. The diversity of carotenoid compounds has been described in detail for a handful of species, but to date, little attention has been paid to natural variability in the concentration and constituency of carotenoid pools. Also lacking are experimental tests of some of the proposed adaptive benefits of carotenoids to the sponge. To address some of these deficits in our understanding of sponge ecology, we used a combination of analytic chemistry, field surveys, and manipulative experiments to determine what function these compounds might play. Attention was focused on the common, …

Tuning Σ-Holes: Charge Redistribution In The Heavy (Group 14) Analogues Of Simple And Mixed Halomethanes Can Impose Strong Propensities For Halogen Bonding, Kelling J. Donald, Bernard K. Wittmaack, Chad Crigger

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Halogen bonding between halide sites (in substituted organic molecules or inorganic halides) and Lewis bases is a rapidly progressing area of exploration. Investigations of this phenomenon have improved our understanding of weak intermolecular interactions and suggested new possibilities in supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. The capacity for halogen bonding is investigated at the MP2(full) level of theory for 100 compounds, including all 80 MH4-nXn systems (M = C, Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb; X = F, Cl, Br, and I). The charge redistribution in these molecules and the (in)stability of the σ-hole at X as …

The Third Tear In Everyday Aesthetics, Katya Mandoki Jan 2010

The Third Tear In Everyday Aesthetics, Katya Mandoki

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Although totally overlooked by mainstream aesthetic theory, various paths were nevertheless left open for addressing everyday aesthetics, a natural yet surprisingly controversial topic. Why they were never taken until recently, when the theme of everyday aesthetics is now becoming fashionable, can be explained not only by the obvious fact of philosophical aesthetics’ restrictive focal point on art but, among other reasons, by a kind of fetishism that demands an object of recognized value for legitimating an aesthetic inquiry. This new popularity entails, however, certain theoretical risks such as clinging to traditional art-centric and beauty-centric categories to explain the everyday and …

Exploring The Media's Negative Effects On Body Dissatisfaction And Self Esteem Among Adolescent Girls, Aliscia Doriety

All Capstone Projects

Research has suggested that adolescent girls may be influenced by the media to such a degree that their body image and dissatisfaction tends to increase, as exposure to media increases. In the current study, 75 adolescent girls completed a questionnaire evaluating self-esteem and body image to determine if there were other factors that related to the media's overwhelmingly strong influence. The study concluded that there was a positive correlation between other variables such as, family, which had a stronger influence than media.

Collective Bargaining Agreements In Corporate Reorganizations, Andrew B. Dawson Jan 2010

Collective Bargaining Agreements In Corporate Reorganizations, Andrew B. Dawson

Articles

Congress enacted § 1113 to the Bankruptcy Code in 1984 in order to establish a standard for the rejection of Collective Bargaining Agreements. But the statute's ambiguous language has caused a split between the Second and Third Circuits, and has precipitated a lengthy academic debate largely centered on the interpretation of one word: "necessary." This debate has focused on proper statutory interpretation as well as deeper concerns regarding the policy goals behind the Bankruptcy Code. The present study reports data that indicate that the different interpretations are irrelevant in practice. No matter how "necessary" is defined, the result is always …
