Intelligent Planning And Assimilation Of Auv-Obtained Measurements Within A Roms-Based Ocean Modeling System, Benjamin J. Davini Dec 2010

Intelligent Planning And Assimilation Of Auv-Obtained Measurements Within A Roms-Based Ocean Modeling System, Benjamin J. Davini

Master's Theses

Efforts to learn more about the oceans that surround us have increased dramatically as the technological ability to do so grows. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are one such technological advance. They allow for rapid deployment and can gather data quickly in places and ways that traditional measurement systems (bouys, profilers, etc.) cannot. A ROMS-based data assimilation method was developed that intelligently plans for and integrates AUV measurements with the goal of minimizing model standard deviation. An algorithm developed for this system is first described that optimizes paths for AUVs that seeks to improve the model by gathering data in high-interest …

Investigating Wood Welding Parameters Using A Prototype Welding Machine, Timothy R. Melin Dec 2010

Investigating Wood Welding Parameters Using A Prototype Welding Machine, Timothy R. Melin

Master's Theses

Understanding how different processing variables influence wood welded bonds is vital if the technique will ever be used to create engineered lumber without using adhesives. A variation of vibration welding, wood welding uses pressure and friction to bond materials together. During welding, heat causes a softening in the wood, a naturally occurring composite material. This softening leads to fiber entanglement and a bond forms upon cooling.

The goal of this research was to investigate several processing aspects of the wood welding procedure. A prototype wood welding machine, designed and fabricated from the ground up, was used to investigate the effects …

Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model In Rodents: Methods And Potential Pitfalls, Fudong Liu, Louise D. Mccullough

UCHC Articles - Research

A variety of animal models have been developed for modeling ischemic stroke. The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model has been utilized extensively, especially in rodents. While the MCAO model provides stroke researchers with an excellent platform to investigate the disease, controversial or even paradoxical results are occasionally seen in the literature utilizing this model. Various factors exert important effects on the outcome in this stroke model, including the age and sex of the animal examined. This paper discusses emerging information on the effects of age and sex on ischemic outcomes after MCAO, with an emphasis on mouse models of …

Lateral Blood Flow Velocity Estimation Based On Ultrasound Speckle Size Change With Scan Velocity, Tiantian Xu, Gregory R. Bashford Dec 2010

Lateral Blood Flow Velocity Estimation Based On Ultrasound Speckle Size Change With Scan Velocity, Tiantian Xu, Gregory R. Bashford

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

Conventional (Doppler-based) blood flow velocity measurement methods using ultrasound are capable of resolving the axial component (i.e., that aligned with the ultrasound propagation direction) of the blood flow velocity vector. However, these methods are incapable of detecting blood flow in the direction normal to the ultrasound beam. In addition, these methods require repeated pulse-echo interrogation at the same spatial location. A new method has been introduced which estimates the lateral component of blood flow within a single image frame using the observation that the speckle pattern corresponding to blood reflectors (typically red blood cells) stretches (i.e., is smeared) if the …

From Information Technology To Ice-Cream: One Man's Entrepreneurial Quest For Happiness, Knowledge@Smu Dec 2010

From Information Technology To Ice-Cream: One Man's Entrepreneurial Quest For Happiness, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Medal-winning fencer Wong Toon King is not some swash-buckling corporate hot shot, slashing and hacking at business rivals. Rather, the former government scholar turned serial entrepreneur believes that the important ingredients to building businesses include not just good ideas, but also a knack of identifying trends and a good sense of timing. Most importantly, entrepreneurs need to be happy at what they are doing – even if it means scooping and serving Ben & Jerry's ice-cream every day, said the founder of The Happy People Co., local franchisee of the popular brand of ice-cream.

A Peek Into The New Korea: Will The Hermit Crab Come Out Of Its Shell?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

South Korea's economic and industrial rise over the past decade has been a subject of envy. Here is a country that has gone from being 'the one with the fermented vegetables' to the high-tech gadget innovation hub that it is today. Samsung and LG have attained worldly status, with consumer electronics that can give the big old boys from across the Sea of Japan a good run for their money. Yet, despite its success, the country remains mired in much of its painful past – from the divide between the former kingdoms of Silla, Baekje and Goguryeo to the North-South …

A Study Of Outcomes-Oriented Student Reflection During Internship: The Integrated, Coordinated, And Reflection Based Model Of Learning And Experiential Education, James E. Griffin Jr, Gregory F. Lorenz, David Mitchell

University Office Publications

Student reflection in experiential education is recognized as a valuable tool in learning and development (Moon, 2006). InCoRe, an acronym for integration, coordination and reflection, is a model for reflective teaching and learning intended to encourage student reflection prior to, during, and after an internship experience. InCoRe operates through the strategic integration of experiential education within a program of study, the coordination of student advising between faculty and the administrators and staff members who manage and support experiential education and student-based reflection oriented toward fulfillment of student learning outcomes. The model employs several theoretical constructs including a derivative of Bruner’s …

Sustainability Principles: A Review And Directions, Paul Shrivastava, Stephanie Berger Dec 2010

Sustainability Principles: A Review And Directions, Paul Shrivastava, Stephanie Berger

Organization Management Journal

In 1987 the publication of Our Common Future by the United Nations’ World Commission on Environment and Development proposed the concept of sustainable development as an ideal for the global economy and corporations. In seeking sustainable economic growth and sustainability at the enterprise level, a number of “sustainability principles” or codes of conduct emerged. A great deal of intellectual effort, managerial resources, and publicity are devoted to these principles. While these principles have created some dialogue, and helped to lead some organizations in the direction of sustainability, their practical effectiveness remains uncertain. This paper provides an overview of sustainability principles …

Evolution And Faith: Clarified Terminology And Reasonable Debate, Donald J. Lococo Dec 2010

Evolution And Faith: Clarified Terminology And Reasonable Debate, Donald J. Lococo

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In recent years the news media have characterized the theory of evolution as contentious and that science and religion are incompatible. The so-called debate is fomented self-labeled scientist/believers who claim that the theory of evolution is scientifically ambiguous at best, contending that intelligent design is a viable alternative ―scientific‖ theory. What follows below is an attempt to illustrate how the contentiousness of the issue follows from a misuse of language the ignorance of which falsely enables the so-called debate to continue. At issue is the ambiguous meaning of the …

Revisiting The Regulatory Status Of Broadband Internet Access: A Policy Framework For Net Neutrality And An Open Competitive Internet, Lee L. Selwyn, Helen E. Golding Dec 2010

Revisiting The Regulatory Status Of Broadband Internet Access: A Policy Framework For Net Neutrality And An Open Competitive Internet, Lee L. Selwyn, Helen E. Golding

Federal Communications Law Journal

A decade of broadband access deregulation has landed the FCC at a legal deadend. After the D.C. Circuit's Comcast decision, the FCC finds itself unable to enforce its "net neutrality" goals. To reassert its jurisdiction over "net neutrality," the FCC proposes to reclassify broadband Internet access as a Title II "telecommunications service" while continuing to forbear from most other facets of common carrier regulation. The FCC's current dilemma results from an unfortunate combination of unverified predictive judgments associating deregulation with investment; overly optimistic assessments of competition in the consumer broadband market; the abandonment of the "bright line" between transmission and …
