Isomer-Dependent Adsorption And Release Of Cis- And Trans-Platin Anticancer Drugs By Mesopomus Silica Nanoparticles, Zhimin Tao, Youwei Xie, Jerry Goodisman, Tewodros Asefa
Chemistry - All Scholarship
We report on adsorption and release of the anticancer drugs cisplatin and transplatin from mesoporous silica nanomaterials, emphasizing the differences between cisplatin and its much less toxic isomer. Two types of particles, M.CM-41 and SBA-IS, were used, either as just synthesized or after calcination to remove the templates. The particles were characterized by TEM, nitrogen physisorption, and elemental analysis. The UV-vis spectra of cisplatin and transplatin were obtained and the intensities of several bands (205-210 nm, 210-220 nm, 220-235 nm, and 300-330 nm) were found proportional to drug concentrations, allowing their use for measuring drug concentration. To evaluate drug adsorption …

Healthcare Reform And Medical Data Security And Privacy, Patricia Mactaggart, Stephanie Fiore
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
U.S. health care delivery and administration have undergone transformations that create an expansive demand for health information technology. The concepts put forth in health care reform are reliant on an evolving health information technology infrastructure and the successes of both are dependent on consumer/patient "trust". Every action is interdependent. Each decision is a balance between ease of use, privacy and security concerns of consumers/patients, practicality, costs and political will. The goal is finding the best balance within an appropriate legal framework at the state and federal level so the pieces fit into one complete picture when implemented.

One of the major efforts in the quantum biological program is to subject biological systems to standard tests or measures of quantumness. These tests and measures should elucidate whether nontrivial quantum effects may be present in biological systems. Two such measures of quantum correlations are the quantum discord and the relative entropy of entanglement. Here, we show that the relative entropy of entanglement admits a simple analytic form when dynamics and accessible degrees of freedom are restricted to a zero- and single-excitation subspace. We also simulate and calculate the amount of quantum discord that is present in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson protein …

A precision measurement of the top quark mass mt is obtained using a sample of tt̄ events from pp̄ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF II detector. Selected events require an electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and exactly four high-energy jets, at least one of which is tagged as coming from a b quark. A likelihood is calculated using a matrix element method with quasi-Monte Carlo integration taking into account finite detector resolution and jet mass effects. The event likelihood is a function of mt and a parameter ΔJES used to calibrate the jet energy scale …

We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced with a Z boson in 4.1fb⊃-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electrons or muons, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section multiplied by the H→bb̄ branching ratio. Improved analysis methods enhance signal sensitivity by 20% relative to previous searches. At a Higgs boson mass of 115GeV/c2 we set a limit of 5.9 times the standard model cross section. © …

Web-Based Ide To Create Model And Controller Components For Mvc-Based Web Applications On Cakephp, Sugiharto Widjaja
Master's Projects
A Web-based IDE that allows users to easily manage Model and Controller components of a CakePHP web application was developed. With this IDE, users are able to manage the model and controller components without having to write very much PHP code. They are able to create new model components without having to worry about creating the database tables for the models as the IDE creates them automatically. The IDE offers a simple interface for users to edit the schema of their models. Users can add or delete data from their models without dealing with the SQL insert/delete statements. The IDE …

Making Business Process Reengineering (Bpr) Programmes Work: Case Of Kamal Steel Company, George S. Mwaluko
Making Business Process Reengineering (Bpr) Programmes Work: Case Of Kamal Steel Company, George S. Mwaluko
Business Management Review
It has been shown that improvement in sales revenue obtained through the implementation of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) programmes is ten times the improvement realised through the implementation of Total Quality Management programmes. However, the failure rate of BPR programmes has been shown to be high, about 70%. Most writers have confined themselves to identifying the causes of the failure of BPR programmes. The author argues that the high failure rate of BPR programmes is caused by the fact that the development of their implementation frameworks is not based on the causes of failure of BPR programmes. In this paper …
Determination Of Level Of Imports In The Construction Industry In Tanzania, Robert Suphian
Determination Of Level Of Imports In The Construction Industry In Tanzania, Robert Suphian
Business Management Review
The construction industry has to be competitive and be able to undertake most of the construction projects in Tanzania and export its services and product according to the Tanzania construction policy. This is contrary to the fact that the industry is dominated by Foreign Service providers to the tune of approximately 70 percent in terms of market share. This study employed an econometric model estimation to answer the question of what determined import for construction services in Tanzania for the period 1985-2008. The Ordinary Least Square technique was adopted and applied for regression analysis using Stata 10 software. The findings …

Demand For Accountants In Botswana: Views Of Employers, Christian J. Mbekomize
Business Management Review
The objective of this study was to explore the problem of shortage of accountants in Botswana in order to establish which types of accountants are in short supply, identify the sector of the economy which has been most affected by the shortage and find out how this shortage could be curtailed. A survey of the views of employers of accountants revealed the vacancy rate of professional accountants in Botswana as 15% of the establishment, with that the ratio of local to expatriate accountants about 1:1. These findings do not support the findings by the Botswana Institute of Accountants in 2009, …

Harvesting feedstock for biofuel production must not degrade soil, water, or air resources. Our objective is to provide an overview of field research being conducted to quantify effects of harvesting corn (Zea mays L.) stover as a bioenergy feedstock. Coordinated fi eld studies are being conducted near Ames, IA; St. Paul and Morris, MN; Mead, NE; University Park, PA; Florence, SC; and Brookings, SD., as part of the USDA-ARS Renewable Energy Assessment Project (REAP). A baseline soil quality assessment was made using the Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF). Corn grain and residue yield for two diff erent stover harvest rates …

Dihomotopic Deadlock Detection Via Progress Shell Decomposition, David A. Cape, Stephen C. Jackson, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The classical problem of deadlock detection for concurrent programs has traditionally been accomplished by symbolic methods or by search of a state transition system. This work examines an approach that uses geometric semantics involving the topological notion of dihomotopy to partition the state space into components, followed by search of a reduced state space. Prior work partitioned the state-space inductively. in this work, a decomposition technique motivated by recursion coupled with a search guided by the decomposition is shown to effectively reduce the size of state transition systems. the reduced state space yields asymptotic improvement in overall runtime for verification. …
