Place: Community Development And The Effects Of Nature And Culture, Laura Zimmerman Jan 2010

Place: Community Development And The Effects Of Nature And Culture, Laura Zimmerman

Landscape Architecture Theses

What conjures a sense of place? Is it the landscape, the built environment, the people, or more likely a combination of them all? This document explores the factors that contribute to a unique sense of place. With this understanding, how can these factors be utilized to show the effects of nature and culture in site specific design?

Pedesign, Jean Beaupre Jan 2010

Pedesign, Jean Beaupre

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis sets out to explore planning alternatives that function for pedestrians instead of vehicular traffic. Setting new standards and development process will help for a long and successful community but understanding that does not always come with low price tag is a fact of life. Large scale changes like infrastructure of roads down to signage requirements are changes that need to be implemented in order to result in a pedestrian friendly community. The introduction of mass-transit to a economical well rounded area can be risky but will only value and integrity to the entire metro area. The most important …

“The Tunisia Paradox: Italy’S Strategic Aims, French Imperial Rule, And Migration In The Mediterranean Basin.” California Italian Studies 1, “Italy In The Mediterranean” (2010): 1-20., Mark I. Choate Jan 2010

“The Tunisia Paradox: Italy’S Strategic Aims, French Imperial Rule, And Migration In The Mediterranean Basin.” California Italian Studies 1, “Italy In The Mediterranean” (2010): 1-20., Mark I. Choate

Faculty Publications

This article explores contradictions in Italy’s relationship with the Mediterranean basin, setting Tunisia as a focal point. Tunisia was a paradoxical case at the intersection of Italy’s foreign policy: it was a former Roman imperial colony with a strategic location, but it was also a large and vibrant Italian emigrant settlement, like the Italian “colonies” of Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo, New York, and San Francisco. This situation caused much confusion in debates over how Italy should develop its international influence. Faced with a choice of priorities, the Italians of Tunisia called for Italy to concentrate on establishing territorial colonies in …

Retrofitting For Change: Fargo, Chidozie Ehiemere Jan 2010

Retrofitting For Change: Fargo, Chidozie Ehiemere

Landscape Architecture Theses

13th Avenue South Fargo has gradually grown to become the City of Fargo’s commercial and residential hub since the introduction of interstates i-29 and i-94 in the late 1950’s. The region surrounding 13th avenue South has thrived as result of cheap land for development and the infusion of business ventures such as the West acres mall. This has brought an influx of business investors and residents to the area hungry for a piece of the profit and economic productivity the region has to offer. With Fargo's thriving commerce which is predominantly along 13th avenue south Fargo, population figures have been …

Multiscale Modeling Of Cellular Systems In Biology, J. C. Dallon Jan 2010

Multiscale Modeling Of Cellular Systems In Biology, J. C. Dallon

Faculty Publications

Here we review eight different multiscale modeling efforts dealing with cellular systems in biology. The first two models focus on collagen based tissue, one dealing with the biomechanical properties of the tissue and the other focusing on how the dermis is remodeled in scar tissue formation. The next two models deal with first avascular tumor growth and then the role of the vasculature in tumor growth. We then consider two models which use the Immersed Boundary method to model tissue properties and cell-cell adhesion. Finally we conclude with two models with treatments of the Cellular Potts Model. The first models …

Directable Weathering Of Concave Rock Using Curvature Estimation, Matthew Beardall, Joseph Butler, Mckay Farley, Michael D. Jones Jan 2010

Directable Weathering Of Concave Rock Using Curvature Estimation, Matthew Beardall, Joseph Butler, Mckay Farley, Michael D. Jones

Faculty Publications

We address the problem of directable weathering of exposed concave rock for use in computer-generated animation or games. Previous weathering models that admit concave surfaces are computationally inefficient and difficult to control. In nature, the spheroidal and cavernous weathering rates depend on the surface curvature. Spheroidal weathering is fastest in areas with large positive mean curvature and cavernous weathering is fastest in areas with large negative mean curvature. We simulate both processes using an approximation of mean curvature on a voxel grid. Both weathering rates are also influenced by rock durability. The user controls rock durability by editing a durability …

Characterization Of Electrowetting Processes Through Force Measurements, Nathan B. Crane, Pradeep Mishra, Alex A. Volinsky Jan 2010

Characterization Of Electrowetting Processes Through Force Measurements, Nathan B. Crane, Pradeep Mishra, Alex A. Volinsky

Faculty Publications

A new method of characterizing electrowetting is presented in which the forces applied to a modified nanoindenter tip by a test water droplet are measured. A droplet is trapped between the flat nanoindenter tip and the test substrate containing the necessary electrodes. When voltage is applied to the electrodes in the substrate, lateral and normal forces are exerted on the tip and measured by the nanoindenter transducer. Proper selection of the tip geometry permits direct prediction of the resulting in-plane lateral forces using analytical formulas derived from the Young-Lippmann equation. Experimental results show good agreement with both analytical and numerical …

Recovering And Updating Legacy Dictionary Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Dawn Bates Jan 2010

Recovering And Updating Legacy Dictionary Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Dawn Bates

Faculty Publications

Ongoing efforts to annotate and web-enable Lushootseed language resources involve displaying complex dictionary information in ways suitable for diverse users. In this paper we discuss how we have converted dictionary data from its legacy format into a best-practice, state-of-the-art XML format. We also describe how we have been able to further leverage this XML data by making it compatible with Kirrkirr, a new dictionary browser designed to display dictionary information for Australian aboriginal languages. We sketch the process in adapting the dictionary browser to make it a very workable visualization tool for Lushootseed data as well. We also explain and …

Ontologies For Multilingual Extraction, Deryle W. Lonsdale, David W. Embley, Stephen W. Liddle Jan 2010

Ontologies For Multilingual Extraction, Deryle W. Lonsdale, David W. Embley, Stephen W. Liddle

Faculty Publications

In our global society, multilingual barriers sometimes prohibit and often discourage people from accessing a wider variety of goods and services. We propose multilingual extraction ontologies as an approach to resolving these issues. As envisioned, our ontologies provide a conceptual framework for a narrow domain of interest. Grounding narrow-domain ontologies linguistically enables them to map relevant utterances and text to meaningful concepts in the ontology. Our prior work includes leveraging large-scale lexicons and terminology resources for grounding and augmenting ontological content [12]. Linguistically grounding ontologies in multiple languages enables cross-language communication within the scope of the various ontologies’ domains. Technically, …

Kbb: A Knowledge-Bundle Builder For Research Studies, Deryle W. Lonsdale, David W. Embley, Stephen W. Liddle, Aaron Stewart, Cui Tao Jan 2010

Kbb: A Knowledge-Bundle Builder For Research Studies, Deryle W. Lonsdale, David W. Embley, Stephen W. Liddle, Aaron Stewart, Cui Tao

Faculty Publications

Researchers struggle to manage vast amounts of data coming from hundreds of sources in online repositories. To successfully conduct research studies, researchers need to find, retrieve, filter, extract, integrate, organize, and share information in a timely and high-precision manner. Active conceptual modeling for learning can give researchers the tools they need to perform their tasks in a more efficient, user-friendly, and computer-supported way. The idea is to create “knowledge bundles” (KBs), which are conceptual-model representations of organized information superimposed over a collection of source documents. A “knowledgebundle builder” (KBB) helps researchers develop KBs in a synergistic and incremental manner and …

Investigation Of Nitrogen Release During Coal Pyrolysis In An Oxy-Fuel Combustion Process, John M. Sowa, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2010

Investigation Of Nitrogen Release During Coal Pyrolysis In An Oxy-Fuel Combustion Process, John M. Sowa, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Three coals were studied in a flat flame burner (FFB) to determine nitrogen release during pyrolysis as a function of the temperature from 1600 to 1900 K in an oxy-fuel environment. The oxy-fuel environment was created by replacing the background N2 with CO2 in the FFB experiments. Both types of experiments were conducted under fuel-rich conditions, with no O2 present in the postflame gases. The oxy-fuel results were compared to previous results from FFB experiments in a N2 atmosphere. A bituminous coal showed no difference in mass and nitrogen release between the two environments. The sub-bituminous coal exhibited higher mass …

A Sub-Grid, Mixture–Fraction-Based Thermodynamic Equilibrium Model For Gas Phase Combustion In Firetec: Development And Results, Michael M. Clark, Thomas H. Fletcher, Rodman R. Linn Jan 2010

A Sub-Grid, Mixture–Fraction-Based Thermodynamic Equilibrium Model For Gas Phase Combustion In Firetec: Development And Results, Michael M. Clark, Thomas H. Fletcher, Rodman R. Linn

Faculty Publications

The chemical processes of gas phase combustion in wildland fires are complex and occur at length-scales that are not resolved in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of landscape-scale wildland fire. A new approach for modelling fire chemistry in HIGRAD/FIRETEC (a landscape-scale CFD wildfire model) applies a mixture–fraction model relying on thermodynamic chemical equilibrium to predict combustion flame temperatures and product species compositions. The mixture–fraction approach is common in combustor modelling applications. However, since individual flame sheets are not resolved in HIGRAD/FIRETEC, application of the mixture–fraction approach requires the development of a sub-grid model, which is based on the two assumptions …

The Surface Characteristics And Reactivity Of Residual Carbon In Coal Gasification Slag, Xianglong Zhao, Cai Zeng, Yanyan Mao, Wenhua Li, Yun Peng, Tao Wang, Boris Eiteneer, Vladimir Zamansky, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2010

The Surface Characteristics And Reactivity Of Residual Carbon In Coal Gasification Slag, Xianglong Zhao, Cai Zeng, Yanyan Mao, Wenhua Li, Yun Peng, Tao Wang, Boris Eiteneer, Vladimir Zamansky, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

In a slagging entrained-flow coal gasifier, a large portion of the inorganic matter will form liquid slag that may have strong physical and chemical interactions with char. Understanding the char-slag interaction is important for improving the modeling and design of gasifiers. This paper reports the characteristics of residual carbon in both coarse and fine slag from a typical entrained-flow coal water slurry gasifier. The surface characteristics of slag and residual carbon in slag were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The reactivity of the residual carbon in slag was compared through thermal gravimetric analysis. It was …

Experimental Measurements During Combustion Of Moist Individual Foliage Samples, Brent M. Pickett, Carl Isackson, Rebecca Wunder, Thomas H. Fletcher, Bret Buitler, David R. Weise Jan 2010

Experimental Measurements During Combustion Of Moist Individual Foliage Samples, Brent M. Pickett, Carl Isackson, Rebecca Wunder, Thomas H. Fletcher, Bret Buitler, David R. Weise

Faculty Publications

Individual samples of high moisture fuels from the western and southern United States and humidified aspen excelsior were burned over a flat-flame burner at 987◦ ±12 C and 10±0.5 mol% O2. Time-dependent mass and temperature profiles of these samples were obtained and analysed. It was observed that significant amounts of moisture remained in the individual samples after ignition occurred. Temperature histories showed a plateau at 200◦–300 C at the leaf perimeter rather than at 100 C, with a plateau of 140 C for the leaf interior. Implications are that classical combustion models should be altered to reflect the behaviour of …

Japanese Elicited Imitation: Asr-Based Oral Proficiency Test And Optimal Item Creation, Hitokazu Matsushita, Deryle Londsdale, Dan Dewey Jan 2010

Japanese Elicited Imitation: Asr-Based Oral Proficiency Test And Optimal Item Creation, Hitokazu Matsushita, Deryle Londsdale, Dan Dewey

Faculty Publications

In this study we discuss the development of an optimal ASR-based grading system for an L2 oral proficiency test with a method called elicited imitation (EI). We also discuss EI test item creation from a linguistic point of view. Based on two issues found in a previous study (Matsushita & LeGare, 2010) we also investigate creation of improved language models for EI grading with speech corpus data. Finally, we examine the effectiveness of new EI items in our empirical study and suggest a method to retrieve authentic EI test items from corpus data.

Characterization And Correction Of Dark Current In Compact Consumer Cameras, Justin Charles Dunlap, Erik Bodegom, Ralf Widenhorn Jan 2010

Characterization And Correction Of Dark Current In Compact Consumer Cameras, Justin Charles Dunlap, Erik Bodegom, Ralf Widenhorn

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A study of dark current in digital imagers within consumer grade digital cameras is presented. Dark current is shown to vary with temperature, exposure time, and ISO setting. Further, dark current is shown to increase in successive images during a series of images. Consumer cameras are often designed to be as compact as possible and therefore the digital imagers within the camera frame are prone to heat generated by nearby elements within the camera body. It is the scope of this work to characterize the dark current in such cameras and to show that the dark current, in part due …

Psychological Ownership And The Individual Appropriation Of Technology, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen Jan 2010

Psychological Ownership And The Individual Appropriation Of Technology, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen

Faculty Publications

We use information technology to accomplish a significant portion of our daily tasks. The way individuals choose to use technology varies as much as the outcomes of their usage. Appropriation – the way that people choose or learn to use technology – has been explored at a group level to explain group behaviors and performance. Although appropriation antecedents and outcomes have been investigated in many studies, none has attempted to explain the motivations or factors influencing the individual appropriation of technology; nor has extant research discovered the impacts resulting from individual appropriation. In this exploratory paper, we inquire within this …

Design Dna Sequencing: A Set Of Methodological Artifacts For Sequencing Socio-Technical Design Routines, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen, Veeresh Thummadi, Douglas Schutz, Youngjin Yoo, Aaron Weiss, Nicholas Berente

Faculty Publications

With the introduction of new digital and physical tools into the workplace, the process of design has dramatically changed over the past few decades. Thus, design processes have evolved into many forms which vary, not only between organizations, but within organizations, and even within teams over time. These myriad “mutations” of the design process call for a new method to identify patterns of design activity and their change in order to deeply understand the design process. In this paper we suggest a new method for identifying patterns of activity in design teams. Such activity involves composites of distributed interactions – …

Procter & Gamble’S Pur Purifier Of Water: How Global Corporate Philanthropy Builds Shareholder Value, Lisa Jones Christensen, Carol Seagle Jan 2010

Procter & Gamble’S Pur Purifier Of Water: How Global Corporate Philanthropy Builds Shareholder Value, Lisa Jones Christensen, Carol Seagle

Faculty Publications

“When are you going to change this Children’s Safe Drinking Water program and make money for your company? Surely Procter & Gamble wants you to profit on the water purification technology—you can’t sustain your program as a non-profit!”

Greg Allgood sighed internally at this question, as it seemed to surface frequently despite the continued and rapid growth of the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) program at P&G. Allgood (Director of the CSDW program) was not actually frustrated with the query, as he had an easy answer ready. Rather, he wished that people could more easily see how his team’s non-profit …

Trustworthiness, Governance, And Wealth Creation, Cam Caldwell, Mark H. Hansen Jan 2010

Trustworthiness, Governance, And Wealth Creation, Cam Caldwell, Mark H. Hansen

Faculty Publications

Although trustworthiness has been described as a source of competitive advantage, its value extends to organizational governance and wealth creation. We identify the importance of the commitment–compliance continuum in the decision to trust and note that trustworthiness is a subjective perception viewed through each person’s mediating lens. That lens and each person’s interpretation of the social contract impact one’s commitment to cooperate. We suggest five propositions that integrate trustworthiness, governance, and wealth creation.

Bioethics And Biosecurity Education In China: Rise Of A Scientific Superpower., Barr S. Michael, Joy Yueyue Zhang

Book Chapters

This chapter explores ethics, education and the life sciences in China. It is based on work conducted by the authors in two separate but complimentary projects. Barr’s observations derive from interviews and discussions in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou with life scientists and policymakers in infectious-disease hospitals, university-research labs, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Ministry of Health. Zhang’s study focused on China’s governance of stem-cell research and involved interviews with scientists, ethicists and policymakers at more than 25 sites across China. Below, we set the context by describing the role of science in China’s quest to become a leading …

Patent Pools, Rand Commitments, And The Problematics Of Price Discrimination, Daniel A. Crane Jan 2010

Patent Pools, Rand Commitments, And The Problematics Of Price Discrimination, Daniel A. Crane

Book Chapters

The social welfare problematics of patent pooling by competitors are well known. Competitor patent pooling has the potential to create powerful efficiencies by eliminating holdout problems and blocking positions and reducing transactions costs from licensing negotiations. At the same time, competitors can use patent pools to cartelize in a variety of ways, for example by fixing prices, entrenching patents of dubious validity, and discouraging rivalry for innovation. Determining legal norms capable of capturing the efficiencies without enabling cartels has not proven easy.

Perhaps because of the practical difficulty of separating pro-competitive from anticompetitive pools, antitrust scrutiny has swung from extreme …

Alkyl Polyglycoside/1-Naphthol Formulations With Ultra-Low Interfacial Tensions Against N-Octane For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Stefan Iglauer, Yongfu Wu, Patrick Shuler, Yongchun Tang, William Goddard Jan 2010

Alkyl Polyglycoside/1-Naphthol Formulations With Ultra-Low Interfacial Tensions Against N-Octane For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Stefan Iglauer, Yongfu Wu, Patrick Shuler, Yongchun Tang, William Goddard

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present Alkyl polyglycoside (APG)/1-naphthol formulations which show ultra-low interfacial tensions (IFT) against n-octane. We demonstrate that 1-naphthol is very efficient as a cosolvent in terms of reducing IFT. These formulations are therefore potentially suitable as agents for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). an increasing APG concentration strongly increased viscosity, and the formulations showed shear-thinning behavior. in a core flood EOR test we showed that this type of formulation significantly increased oil production. © 2010, European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.
