Study Of The Photoinduced Surface Relief Modulation In Photopolymers Caused By Illumination With A Gaussian Beam Of Light, Tzvetanka Babeva, Dana Mackey, Suzanne Martin, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal

Articles

The formation of surface relief profile in photopolymerisable systems when illuminated with a focused beam of light is simulated numerically using a two-way diffusion model that takes account both for monomer and short polymer chains diffusion. The concentration and spatial distribution dynamics of monomer and short and long polymer chains are calculated. The surface profile is obtained from calculated components concentrations considering different densities of monomer and polymer. The influence of the illumination time, intensity and spot diameter on the surface profiles dynamics is discussed. A good agreement between the calculated and the experimentally measured profiles is observed thus demonstrating …

A Diffusion Model For Spatially Dependent Photopolymerization, Dana Mackey, Tzvetanka Babeva, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal Jan 2010

A Diffusion Model For Spatially Dependent Photopolymerization, Dana Mackey, Tzvetanka Babeva, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal

Articles

Photopolymers represent an attractive class of optical recording materials due to properties such as high refractive index modulation, dry film processing, long shelf life, etc. Applications include holographically based devices for optical storage disks, optical interconnections, optical memories and filters. This paper will address the dynamics of short-exposure holographic grating formation; a new mathematical model is proposed with the aim of understanding the experimental observations of low diffraction efficiency in high spatial frequency gratings.

Vibration Phase Measurements Using Holographic Optical Elements, Viswanath Bavigadda, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Vincent Toal, Emilia Mihaylova Jan 2010

Vibration Phase Measurements Using Holographic Optical Elements, Viswanath Bavigadda, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Vincent Toal, Emilia Mihaylova

Articles

The application of an out-of-plane sensitive electronic speckle pattern interferometer (ESPI) using holographic optical element (HOE) to vibration amplitude and phase mapping is reported. The novelty of the proposed system is the use of a speckle reference wave stored in a reflection holographic optical element (HOE). The incorporation of a HOE minimizes the alignment difficulties. The HOE based ESPI system is compact containing only a diode laser, HOE and a digital CMOS camera. The measurement technique is a combination of time averaged ESPI and reference beam phase modulation in an unbalanced interferometer. The reference beam phase modulation is implemented by …

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer Using Holographic Optical Elements For Vibration Measurements, Viswanath Bavigadda, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Emilia Mihaylova, Vincent Toal

Articles

A simple and compact electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) built with holographic optical elements (HOEs) used for the study of out-of-plane vibration is reported. Carefully fabricated reflection and transmission HOEs provide reference and object beams in the interferometer. All the alignment difficulties in conventional ESPI systems are minimized using HOEs. The time average ESPI subtraction method is used to generate correlation fringes. The background speckle noise is removed by introducing a phase shift between sequential images. The amplitude and phase maps are obtained using path difference modulation in an unbalanced ESPI.

Playing Technique And Violin Timbre: Detecting Bad Playing, Jane Charles Jan 2010

Playing Technique And Violin Timbre: Detecting Bad Playing, Jane Charles

Doctoral

For centuries, luthiers have committed to working towards better understanding and improving the sound characteristics and playability of violins. With advances in technology and signal processing, studies attempting to define a violin’s sound quality
via physical characteristics and resonance patterns have ensued. Existing work has primarily focused on physical aspects reflecting an instrument’s sound quality. In the music information retrieval domain, advances have been made in areas such
as instrument identification tasks. Although much research has been completed on finding suitable features from which musical instruments can be represented, little work has focused on the violin’s complete timbre space and …

Mig-6 And Its Role In Regulating Adult Lung Epithelium, Sandra Bennett Jan 2010

Mig-6 And Its Role In Regulating Adult Lung Epithelium, Sandra Bennett

Masters

Through the use of developmental and knock out studies Mig-6 has been shown to have a role in development. It has also been shown to be a tumour suppressor gene. Little work has been done as yet looking at its role in the adult. This study examined the role of Mig-6 in the lung with the ultimate goal being to determine if the pulmonary phenotype due to Mig-6 ablation is due to a developmental programming or loss of function in the adult. This was investigated in two ways. 1. To investigate if knocking out Mig-6 in adult lung has an …

In Defense Of Feres: An Unfairly Maligned Opinion, Paul F. Figley

American University Law Review

The Supreme Court’s 1950 Feres v. United States decision held that when it enacted the Federal Tort Claims Act Congress did not intend to waive sovereign immunity for injuries to members of the military arising out of activity incident to their service. The Court’s decision was influenced by the long history of efforts to enact a general tort claims bill that would free Congress from the burden of processing claims against the government, as well as the case law, statutes, and procedures pertaining to service-members’ injuries prior to enactment of the Federal Tort Claims Act. This Article examines those influences …

Developmental Assessment And Feedback Relieves Parenting Stress, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Melody A. Whiddon Jan 2010

Developmental Assessment And Feedback Relieves Parenting Stress, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Melody A. Whiddon

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Numerous studies have established that role stress experienced by parents has an impact on their perceptions of their child’s behavior, the quality of their parent-child interactions, and their child’s overall adjustment. Significant numbers of parents do experience the parenting role as stressful, often because they have concerns about whether their child’s behavior is within normal limits. Having seen parenting stress frequently while counseling parents and children, we reasoned that providing individualized developmental information to parents could reduce their parenting stress, and in turn result in positive consequences for parents and for children.

This article describes a brief intervention we developed, …

Stream Invertebrate Responses To A Catastrophic Decline In Consumer Diversity, Jose Checo Colón-Gaud, Matt R. Whiles, Karen R. Lips, Catherine M. Pringle, Susan Kilham, Roberto Brenes, Scot D. Peterson Jan 2010

Stream Invertebrate Responses To A Catastrophic Decline In Consumer Diversity, Jose Checo Colón-Gaud, Matt R. Whiles, Karen R. Lips, Catherine M. Pringle, Susan Kilham, Roberto Brenes, Scot D. Peterson

Biology: Faculty Publications

Tadpoles are often abundant and diverse consumers in headwater streams in the Neotropics. However, their populations are declining catastrophically in many regions, in part because of a chytrid fungal pathogen. These declines are occurring along a moving disease front in Central America and offer the rare opportunity to quantify the consequences of a sudden, dramatic decline in consumer diversity in a natural system. As part of the Tropical Amphibian Declines in Streams (TADS) project, we examined stream macroinvertebrate assemblage structure and production for 2 y in 4 stream reaches at 2 sites in Panama. One site initially had healthy amphibians …

Effect Of Substrate Temperature On The Optical Properties Of Thermally Evaporated Zns Thin Films, M. Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, M. Monjarul Alam, M. Abdul Momin Jan 2010

Effect Of Substrate Temperature On The Optical Properties Of Thermally Evaporated Zns Thin Films, M. Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, M. Monjarul Alam, M. Abdul Momin

Turkish Journal of Physics

Zinc Sulfide (ZnS) thin films were formed onto cleaned glass substrates using the thermal evaporation method in vacuum. The substrate temperature was varied between as- deposited and 150 °C, keeping the film thickness and the rate of evaporation fixed at 200~nm and 0.3~nm \cdot s^{-1}, respectively. The film thickness was measured in situ by a quartz crystal thickness monitor. The structure of the films was ascertained by x-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The XRD spectra show that the films are polycrystalline in nature, which possess hexagonal structure. The optical properties of the films were ascertained by UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer (photon wavelength ranging …

Event Detection From Click-Through Data Via Query Clustering, Prabhu Kumar Angajala Jan 2010

Event Detection From Click-Through Data Via Query Clustering, Prabhu Kumar Angajala

Masters Theses

"The web is an index of real-world events and lot of knowledge can be mined from the web resources and their derivatives. Event detection is one recent research topic triggered from the domain of web data mining with the increasing popularity of search engines. In the visitor-centric approach, the click-through data generated by the web search engines is the start up resource with the intuition: often such data is event-driven. In this thesis, a retrospective algorithm is proposed to detect such real-world events from the click-through data. This approach differs from the existing work as it: (i) considers the click-through …

Reading Stoneridge Carefully: A Duty-Based Approach To Reliance And Third Party Liability Under Rule 10b-5, Donald C. Langevoort Jan 2010

Reading Stoneridge Carefully: A Duty-Based Approach To Reliance And Third Party Liability Under Rule 10b-5, Donald C. Langevoort

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Supreme Court's decision in the Stoneridge case has largely been interpreted as a imposing a strict, pro-defendant reliance requirement. This article offers an alternative reading that takes the Court's analysis more seriously than its overheated dicta, one that makes "remoteness" a serious and meaningful inquiry that can produce balanced and fair responses to the concern that seemed to motivate the search for restraint: fear of disproportionate liability. It explores the nature of the dispropotion, and suggests ways--using the Court's own explanatory tools--for deciding when third party involvement is close enough to the fraud so that fear of disproportion lessens. …

How Must A Lawyer Be? A Response To Woolley And Wendel, David Luban Jan 2010

How Must A Lawyer Be? A Response To Woolley And Wendel, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Legal Ethics and Moral Character, 23 GEO. J. LEGAL Ethics, Alice Woolley and W. Bradley Wendel argue that theories of legal ethics may be evaluated by examining the kind of person a lawyer must be to conform to the normative demands of the theory. In their words, theories of legal ethics musts answer questions not only of what a lawyer must do, but how a lawyer must be. Woolley and Wendel examine three theories of legal ethics—those of Charles Fried, William Simon, and myself—and conclude that the theories they discuss impose demands on agency that are not realistic, functional, …

Redressing The Unconscionable Health Gap: A Global Plan For Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2010

Redressing The Unconscionable Health Gap: A Global Plan For Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Consider two children—one born in sub-Saharan Africa and the other in the United States. The African child is twenty-five times more likely to die in the first five years of life; if she lives to child-bearing age, she is a two hundred times more likely to die in labor; and overall, she will die thirty years earlier than the American child. The international community is deeply resistant to taking bold remedial action—more concerned with their geostrategic interests than the health of the poor. The scale of foreign aid is both insufficient and unsustainable and fails to address the key determinants …
