The purpose of this two-part study is to examine how to improve introductory level non-majors biology courses to improve student attitude and learning gains in the sciences. The first part of this study examines the collective effect of three different pedagogies (service learning, concept mapping and guest lectures) on student attitude and learning gains in a freshman, non-majors biology course. Two classes, one with the three pedagogies, and one without, were compared. Data were collected from two classes in Fall 2008 (one treatment and one control) and two similar classes replicated in Fall 2009. Learning and attitude gains were measured …

Maintaining the viability of populations of plants and animals is a key focus for environmental regulation. Population-level responses integrate the cumulative effects of chemical stressors on individuals as those individuals interact with and are affected by their conspecifics, competitors, predators, prey, habitat, and other biotic and abiotic factors. Models of population-level effects of contaminants can integrate information from lower levels of biological organization and feed that information into higher-level community and ecosystem models. As individual-level endpoints are used to predict population responses, this requires that biological responses at lower levels of organization be translated into a form that is usable …

Bacteriophage BPP-1, which infects Bordetella species, can switch its specificity by mutations to the ligand-binding surface of its major tropism-determinant protein, Mtd. This targeted mutagenesis results from the activity of a phage-encoded diversity-generating retroelement. Purified Mtd binds its receptor with low affinity, yet BPP-1 binding and infection of Bordettella cells are efficient because of high-avidity binding between phage-associated Mtd and its receptor. Here, using an integrative approach of three-dimensional (3D) structural analyses of the entire phage by cryo-electron tomography and single-prticle cryo-electron microscopy, we provide direct localization of Mtd in the phage and the structural basis of the high-avidity binding …

Invasion Of The Honeysuckle, Courtney Masterson
Invasion Of The Honeysuckle, Courtney Masterson
JCCC Honors Journal
Focusing on invasive plants, we find many examples of highly destructive species throughout the United States. These plants, when left unfettered, can slowly dominate an ecosystem, out-competing all of the native botanical species. A community in which all individuals are the same, a monoculture, is very susceptible to predators and diseases. The members of the invasive species also compete with each other for the resources. The more diverse the life is in an ecosystem, the smaller the chance is that the community will be destroyed by the loss of a single species.

Economic progress seems to consistently come with a steep price tag. The Industrial Revolution was birthed in the 1800’s, and as a result manufacturing, mining, transport, as well as other industries within our system systematically tainted viable water sources, contaminated soil, and increased greenhouse gases that include, but are not limited to, carbon dioxide and methane. By 1889 the first sewage treatment plant was installed at Washington D.C., but there were still a very small number of laws that were enacted in order to regulate the mounting amount of industrial waste. Not until 1970, almost 20 years after the fiery …

Combining Local- And Large-Scale Models To Predict The Distributions Of Invasive Plant Species, Chad C. Jones, Steven A. Acker, Charles B. Halpern
Botany Faculty Publications
Habitat-distribution models are increasingly used to predict the potential distributions of invasive species and to inform monitoring. However, these models assume that species are in equilibrium with the environment, which is clearly not true for most invasive species. Although this assumption is frequently acknowledged, solutions have not been adequately addressed. There are several potential methods for improving habitat-distribution models. Models that require only presence data may be more effective for invasive species, but this assumption has rarely been tested. In addition, combining modeling types to form ‘ensemble’ models may improve the accuracy of predictions. However, even with these improvements, models …
Snowflakes In Texas? Enacting Legislation To Allow For Embryo Adoption, Jodi L. Bender
Snowflakes In Texas? Enacting Legislation To Allow For Embryo Adoption, Jodi L. Bender
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
This Comment analyzes the legal status of an embryo in Texas and suggests that Texas should enact laws that will place a frozen embryo in a unique category not as a person, but as a special kind of property deserving of extraordinary respect. Additionally, Texas should develop and enact legislation addressing the issues uniquely related to the disposition of an embryo rather than trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Part II of this paper looks at a real-life couple facing a difficult decision- choosing the disposition of their frozen embryos. Part III discusses the background and …

Cruise Foraging Of Invasive Chameleon (Chamaeleo Jacksonii Xantholophus) In Hawai’I, Travis J. Hagey, Jonathan B. Losos, Luke Harmon
Biology
We quantified the foraging behavior of the Jackson’s chameleon (Chamaeleo jacksonii xantholophus), an invasive insectivorous lizard species in Hawai’i. Using video taken in the field, we focused on percent time moving, moves per minute, and movement speeds. Our results supported previous findings that chameleons are ‘‘cruise foragers’’ (sensu Butler, 2005), a foraging behavior unlike almost all other species of lizards.

It is always a delight to see an idea become a reality. We recognized that there was a need for a dental journal for those to publish a tentative explanation for a phenomenon, an explanation that could be used as a basis for further investigation. Early in the planning, it was necessary to address the question: Is there a need for a journal for dental hypothesis? A detailed examination of dental journals now published revealed that most if not all published research findings - this research might be in various scientific disciplines or in education but all contained results of …

With mounting evidence indicating the direct effect of vitamin D on the vascular smooth muscle cell, endothelial function and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, it is clear that randomized trials of vitamin D replacement and renin and angiotensin inhibition in patients with hypertension and vitamin D deficiency are warranted. Preliminary research has shown an inverse relationship between BP and vitamin D levels, and supplementation appears promising. To that end, we have just initiated a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effects of vitamin D and/or a renin inhibitor on ambulatory and clinic BP in vitamin D deficient patients with hypertension (clinical trials.gov identifier …
