Dna Microarray Image Segmentation Using Active Contours Without Edges Method, Shenghua Ni Apr 2010

Dna Microarray Image Segmentation Using Active Contours Without Edges Method, Shenghua Ni

Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to build a better segmentation method for DNA microarray image processing. Segmentation is a partitioning process used to separate a spot area from a non-spot area in DNA microarrays. It directly affects the accuracy of gene expression analysis in the data mining process that follows. A number of DNA microarray segmentation methods have been proposed in the area, but even modern segmentation methods seem to have accuracy problems. In this dissertation, I will present a segmentation method based on the Active Contours Without Edges (ACWE) algorithm and apply it to two types of DNA …

The Influence Of Improved Literacy On Understanding In High School Biology Using Specific Strategies To Improve Literacy And Science Comprehension, Edward Winslow

Education Masters

One of the current trends in education is towards the increase of literacy in all disciplines, science in particular. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the incorporation of literacy strategies, both reading and writing, would promote understanding in science students. A group of ninth grade students in a biology class were studied over the course of 2 months. During the course of the study an array of different literacy strategies were implemented in the classroom. Many students who initially struggled with reading and writing became more comfortable and were able to comprehend and express this comprehension more …

Pichia Insulana Sp. Nov., A Novel Cactophilic Yeast From The Caribbean Free, Philip F. Ganter, Gianluigi Cardinali, Kyria Boundy-Mills

Biology Faculty Research

A novel species of ascomycetous yeast, Pichia insulana sp. nov., is described from necrotic tissue of columnar cacti on Caribbean islands. P. insulana is closely related to and phenotypically very similar to Pichia cactophila and Pichia pseudocactophila. There are few distinctions between these taxa besides spore type, host preference and locality. Sporogenous strains of P. insulana that produce asci with four hat-shaped spores have been found only on Curaçao, whereas there was no evidence of sporogenous P. cactophila from that island. In addition, sequences of the D1/D2 fragment of the large-subunit rDNA from 12 Curaçao strains showed consistent differences from …

Analysis Of The Educational Facilities In Southern Universities In Nigeria, O.L. Oyeniyi Apr 2010

Analysis Of The Educational Facilities In Southern Universities In Nigeria, O.L. Oyeniyi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The educational system in Nigeria has witnessed tremendous expansion within the last two decades in the midst of limited resources and dilapidated educational facilities. The education sector has not enjoyed a fair share of the total recurrent and capital expenditure of the federal Government, despite the 26% recommended by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).The high priority accorded education according to Longe (1985), has partly been due to the view of education as an investment.

Differing Administrator, Faculty, And Staff Perceptions Of Organizational Culture As Related To External Accreditation, Claire Procopio Apr 2010

Differing Administrator, Faculty, And Staff Perceptions Of Organizational Culture As Related To External Accreditation, Claire Procopio

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

There is an inherent tension in the U.S. system of accreditation. Historically, the system has been one of self-regulation (Brittingham, 2009). As access to higher education has grown, however, and the concomitant flow of federal money to colleges and universities has increased, the federal government and the taxpayers it represents have called for more and more external reporting of measures of college quality. Critics of the current system would like more external oversight to create what they have termed variously a “culture of quality” or a “culture of evidence” (Bardo, 2009; Crow, 2009; Kelderman, 2009; Understanding, 2001). The most dissatisfied …

Implementing Active Learning Strategies: Tales From Two New Life Science Professors At Research Universities, Nichole Barger, Stuart Grandy Apr 2010

Implementing Active Learning Strategies: Tales From Two New Life Science Professors At Research Universities, Nichole Barger, Stuart Grandy

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Past research examining the effects of lectures on student learning suggests that they limit interactions in the classroom, place the responsibility for learning solely with the instructor, and do not provide an environment that compliments a range of learning styles (Silverthorn 1998; Landis et al. 1998; Aboudan 2009). Fortunately, there are many different active learning techniques such as role playing and group activities to more directly engage students and develop their ability to synthesize information, communicate clearly, and adapt to changing knowledge (e.g. Mason 2005; Colley 2008; Cornelius- White 2007). In this paper, we share our experiences implementing active learning …

Factors Influencing The Choice Of Tertiary Education In A Subsaharan African University, Anthony Afful-Broni, Christina Noi-Okwei Apr 2010

Factors Influencing The Choice Of Tertiary Education In A Subsaharan African University, Anthony Afful-Broni, Christina Noi-Okwei

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

One crucial exercise which we are usually involved in is decision making. Educational decision making in terms of selection of universities is one of such exercises that confronts the average candidate, and this is dictated by one consideration or another. These considerations can be quite complex, particularly, when there is a large number of Universities to choose from. In the more developed countries such as in the UK and US, such decisions are perhaps not difficult to make, although students in these countries are confronted with larger number of Universities than that in the less developed worlds such as Ghana. …

Strengthening The Academic Department Through Empowerment Of Faculty And Staff, Abour Cherif, Benjamin Ofori-Amoah, Lin Stefurak

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Empowerment of employees has been a primary concern of business for many decades, under the premise that involvement of employees in decision making leads to superior performance and results. Acceptance of the practical value of empowerment by colleges and universities is more recent and more rare, despite the centrality of ideas such as faculty governance and recognition of the faculty’s essential role in the academic enterprise. Empowerment in academe is defined as the process whereby stakeholders are encouraged and supported in utilizing their knowledge, skills, and creativity to embrace ownership and accountability for the well being of their department and …

Stress And The Chinese Key Middle School, Ping Wang Apr 2010

Stress And The Chinese Key Middle School, Ping Wang

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The Chinese key middle school is different from the non-key middle school in several ways. First, the key middle school enrolls students with higher examination scores. The students study in smaller classes—ordinarily there are 50 students in one key middle school class, fewer than the non-key middle school. Accordingly, each individual in the key middle school can get more attention from teachers. Second, outstanding graduate students from advanced normal universities are assigned to teach in the key middle schools. Third, better teaching facilities are provided to help the students with their studies.

Neither Foster Nor Orphanages, Tami Thayne, Judy Norman Apr 2010

Neither Foster Nor Orphanages, Tami Thayne, Judy Norman

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Clearly, there are circumstances requiring out-of family placement for children. Foster care in the U. S. and orphanages in numerous countries remain available or the only alternative for care of some children at-risk. The mental status of children while in alternative care has received little research attention while much research has focused on the post-care, long-term negative consequences of such care, including developmental delays or impairment (Norman & Park, 2009; Pearce & Pearce, 2001). Research suggests a significant negative psychological impact for children raised in orphanages. While foster care has been viewed as an improvement in the care of vulnerable …

Temperamental Behaviors Measured During The First Months Of Life Are Predictive Of Aggression In Group Housed Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Andrew C. Chaffin, Christina S. Barr, James D. Higley Apr 2010

Temperamental Behaviors Measured During The First Months Of Life Are Predictive Of Aggression In Group Housed Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Andrew C. Chaffin, Christina S. Barr, James D. Higley

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Temperament is thought to be the foundation for personality and subsequent behaviors later in life. To assess early temperamental variables that place individuals at risk for aggression later in life, this laboratory-based study examined infant behavior in group housed infant rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). The subjects were 52 mother-reared subjects. Behavior was assessed from the first through the eighth months of life using objective behavioral measures. Two 5-minute sessions were recorded for subjects each week over 8 months and the average rate of each of the 25 behaviors measured was the dependent measure. A test of the same subjects 2-4 …

Trajectories Of Substance Use Disorders In Youth: Identifying And Predicting Group Memberships, Chih-Yuan Lee, Ken C. Winters, Melanie M. Wall

Department of Family Science and Human Development Scholarship and Creative Works

This study used latent class regression to identify latent trajectory classes based on individuals' diagnostic course of substance use disorders (SUDs) from late adolescence to early adulthood as well as to examine whether several psychosocial risk factors predicted the trajectory class membership. The study sample consisted of 310 individuals originally recruited as children in a long-term prospective study. Diagnoses of alcohol or cannabis use disorders (abuse or dependence) were assessed when individuals were 18 (T1), 20 (T2), and 22 (T3) years old. The results showed that two trajectory classes were identified for both alcohol and cannabis use disorder cases and …

Livestock Animal Cloning: This Steak Is Giving Me Déjà Vu, Blake M. Mensing Apr 2010

Livestock Animal Cloning: This Steak Is Giving Me Déjà Vu, Blake M. Mensing

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Somatic cell nuclear transfer, more commonly known as cloning, received international attention when scientists introduced Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal ever successfully cloned using an adult cell. In many American minds, cloning evokes Frankensteinian images of mad scientists and their quest to throw off the shackles of nature’s limitations. In the real world, cloning probably only shares one trait with the trials and tribulations of science fiction’s most memorable characters: an enormously high rate of failure.
