Mechanisms Associated With Aging And Age-Related Disease In Drosophila, Melanie Jones Apr 2010

Mechanisms Associated With Aging And Age-Related Disease In Drosophila, Melanie Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Aging is an intrinsic process that is independent of obvious disease. In contrast to normal aging, age-related diseases are conditions that typically manifest at advanced ages, are associated with explicit pathology and cause disability and premature death. We used Drosophila as a model to investigate the molecular-genetic mechanisms associated with aging and age-related disease. Age-related locomotor impairment (ARLI) is a serious condition for the elderly and greatly impacts their quality of life. Toward identifying genes and mechanisms that influence ARLI, we performed a forward genetic screen using Drosophila mutants. This screen identified a loss of function mutant in PDK1, a …

Evaluation Of The Flicker Effect As A Generative Strategy In Enhancing Computerbased Instruction (Cbi) Of Visual Recognition And Classification, Ping Luo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Few studies address the question of the technology-based instructional methods of visual patterns, so the overarching purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three treatments on pattern recognition. Specifically, with a pretest-posttest control group experimental study, the effectiveness of three instructional strategies, a flicker treatment, a no-flicker treatment, and a comparison treatment, (groups respectively analyzing sequential displays of two similar images with and without a blank screen in between and simultaneous displays of two images), was compared based on recognition (memory) and classification (transfer) test scores. The group differences in learning effectiveness and efficiency were also measured …

Hues, Tresses, And Dresses: Examining The Relation Of Body Image, Hair, And Clothes To Female Identity In Their Eyes Were Watching God And I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Alisha Priolo Castaneda

Masters Theses

Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings convey powerful relations between body image, hair, and clothes. Because a proper understanding of the theory of womanism provides a basis for comprehending the African American female's relation to herself and the world around her, a working definition and description of the term and its general significance to African American critical theory is provided in chapter two. The third chapter focuses on the general topic of body image in relation to black female identity and includes a more specific analysis of the …

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Patents

Polypeptides, compositions, and methods for treating shock are described. A isolated polypeptide, Deltorphin-E, can be administered without concomitant fluid resuscitation, before, concurrently with, or after the onset of shock or the occurrence of an event that creates a risk of shock. Deltorphin-E can be administered in accordance with the method as part of a preconditioning strategy, which reduces the extent of ischemic injury. Deltorphin-E can be used in preparation for planned ischemia or in a prophylactic manner in anticipation of further ischemic events.

Heavy charged particle beam radiotherapy for cancer is of increasing interest because it delivers a highly conformal radiation dose to the target volume. Accurate knowledge of the range of a heavy charged particle beam after it penetrates a patient's body or other materials in the beam line is very important and is usually stated in terms of the water equivalent thickness (WET). However, methods of calculating WET for heavy charged particle beams are lacking. Our objective was to test several simple analytical formulas previously developed for proton beams for their ability to calculate WET values for materials exposed to beams …

Seasonal Patterns Of Nutrient Retention In A Restored Tidal Freshwater Stream Of The Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain, Joseph Wood Apr 2010

Seasonal Patterns Of Nutrient Retention In A Restored Tidal Freshwater Stream Of The Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain, Joseph Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Nutrient retention is governed by the interplay between physical processes that control the throughput of water and materials (i.e., water residence time), and by biological processes that govern transformation and uptake (e.g., microbial denitrification). A partial breach of the dam located on Kimages Creek (VA) re-established the historical (pre-1920) connection to the James River and provided a well-defined channel to gauge tidal exchange. We quantified tidal exchange as well as non-tidal (watershed) inputs on a monthly basis to assess Nitrogen (N) retention. Water and N fluxes were dominated by tidal exchange which was typically three times greater than inputs from …

Optically Anisotropic Infinite Cylinder Above An Optically Anisotropic Half Space: Dispersion Interaction Of A Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube With A Substrate, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

A complete form of the van der Waals dispersion interaction between an infinitely long anisotropic semiconducting/insulating thin cylinder and an anisotropic half space is derived for all separations between the cylinder and the half space. The derivation proceeds from the theory of dispersion interactions between two anisotropic infinite half spaces as formulated in Phys. Rev. A 71, 042102 (2005). The approach is valid in the retarded as well as nonretarded regimes of the interaction and is coupled with the recently evaluated ab initio dielectric response functions of various semiconducting/insulating single wall carbon nanotubes, enables the authors to evaluate the strength …
