Guide To Stakeholder Groups For Great Basin Sagebrush Steppe Restoration, Scott Hoffmann, Mark W. Brunson, Summer Olsen May 2010

Guide To Stakeholder Groups For Great Basin Sagebrush Steppe Restoration, Scott Hoffmann, Mark W. Brunson, Summer Olsen

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

As efforts are made to restore the health and functioning of sagebrush ecosystems within the Great Basin, various stakeholder interest groups have the potential to offer partnerships as well as adversarial involvement with land managers tasked with restoration. Given that greater than 60% of the Great Basin is publicly owned and managed by the Bureau of Land Management and other federal agencies, it is critical for those working in restoration to understand the views held by key stakeholder groups that may enhance or impair such efforts (Brunson and Peterson 2007). Gaining knowledge about and familiarity with those interest groups active …

Using Wordle As A Supplementary Research Tool, Carmel Mcnaught, Paul Lam May 2010

Using Wordle As A Supplementary Research Tool, Carmel Mcnaught, Paul Lam

The Qualitative Report

A word cloud is a special visualization of text in which the more frequently used words are effectively highlighted by occupying more prominence in the representation. We have used Wordle to produce word-cloud analyses of the spoken and written responses of informants in two research projects. The product demonstrates a fast and visually rich way to enable researchers to have some basic understanding of the data at hand. Word clouds can be a useful tool for preliminary analysis and for validation of previous findings. However, Wordle is an adjunct tool and we do not recommend that this method be used …

Impacts Of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid On Tsuga Canadensis Forest Communities In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Usa, Kurt J. Krapfl May 2010

Impacts Of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid On Tsuga Canadensis Forest Communities In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Usa, Kurt J. Krapfl

Theses

Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. (eastern hemlock), a long lived and shade tolerant coniferous tree species native to eastern North America, is currently threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand, HWA). This exotic, invasive insect poses a serious threat to T. canadensis stands throughout their native range. The loss of this unique tree species is often coupled with numerous ecological consequences. HWA-induced mortality has exceeded 95% in some forest types, and will likely continue to decimate T. canadensis populations in the coming years. Shortly after HWA was found in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), long-term monitoring plots …

Gamete Donation Understanding Prospective Donors’ Motivations, Alexa Grafmuller May 2010

Gamete Donation Understanding Prospective Donors’ Motivations, Alexa Grafmuller

Anthropology

The technological imperative that exists within the framework of society in the United States has facilitated the unprecedented emergence of new reproductive technologies, including the use of donated gametes. The 2002 National Survey of Family Growth informs us that 7.4% of married women aged 15-44 are unable to get pregnant for at least 12 consecutive months, labeled infertility, and that 11.8% of women aged 15-44 have an impaired ability to have children, labeled impaired fecundity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2005). This, paired with the social conventions of child rearing, is one prime indication that gamete donation is an …

Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus Aeneus) Habitat Use And Differential Response To Playback Of Host Song, Mary Jennifer Gorton May 2010

Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus Aeneus) Habitat Use And Differential Response To Playback Of Host Song, Mary Jennifer Gorton

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

During the breeding seasons of 2008 - 2009, 180 fixed-radius point-count surveys and broadcasts of host song were conducted in Santa Ana (SANWR) and Laguna Atascosa (LANWR, 2009 only) National Wildlife Refuges to identify Bronzed Cowbird (Molothrus aeneus) habitat use and test the predictions of the host activity hypothesis. Surveys demonstrated that Bronzed Cowbirds were distributed across all habitat types in both refuges, although there were differences in abundance between the sexes for interior and edge habitats and between habitat types. Bronzed Cowbirds responded differentially to host species playbacks based on suitability and abundance of the host species. The results …

Does The Manipulation Of Tail Position Facilitate Extinction Of Canine Phobic Behavior?, Rebecca A. Zarate May 2010

Does The Manipulation Of Tail Position Facilitate Extinction Of Canine Phobic Behavior?, Rebecca A. Zarate

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The phobic behavior of interest is tail tucking which is indicative of submission. In this study the tail was physically manipulated by the use of a custom made harness to hold the tail up in a dominant position to ideally extinguish phobic behavior through reciprocal inhibition. The harness did not hold the tail up the entire duration of the interventions, although it still held the base of the tail up. The intervention did not appear to have an affect on the two of the five subjects. The three more phobic canines did display some behavioral changes, although the changes noticed …

Hispanic Students' Voices In Writing, Regine Pellicer May 2010

Hispanic Students' Voices In Writing, Regine Pellicer

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study focuses on the voices expressed by Hispanic students enrolled in first-year composition classes at a Hispanic Serving Institution in South Texas. The present research highlights similarities with a study conducted in Tucson, Arizona among Hispanic households. Both studies emphasize the importance of women as active agents in the transmission of literacy practices and language ideologies, which also reflect the dilemma of families caught between tradition and modernity. Moreover, this study reveals that Hispanics tend to look for new frameworks for their lives in evangelical Christianity. This work also focuses on students' dissonances regarding the use of oral code-switching …

Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique: A Representational Technique For Scaffolding Autobiographical Memories, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk May 2010

Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique: A Representational Technique For Scaffolding Autobiographical Memories, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk

The Qualitative Report

A basic premise in narrative therapy and inquiry is that life story telling is a mechanism by which experiences are rendered meaningful within some form of structure. However, narrative inquiry has to take cognisance of difficulties ensuing from discursive practices for different populations when eliciting their life stories. In this article I explicate a unique method, the Collage Life story Elicitation Technique (CLET), geared towards scaffolding life story remembering. Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social constructionism (Gergen, 2000), symbolic interactionism (Berg, 2009) and performative strategies in social science research the CLET provides a mode of expression and narrative performance …

Identification Of Phosphatases Involved In E2f-Associated Apoptosis, Liza D. Morales Smith May 2010

Identification Of Phosphatases Involved In E2f-Associated Apoptosis, Liza D. Morales Smith

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a tumor suppressor protein that controls a critical checkpoint between the G1 phase and the S phase of the cell cycle. Rb is able to suppress cell proliferation by binding to the E2F family of transcription factors, inhibiting its ability to activate transcription of genes necessary for cell cycle progression. Mutations in proteins involved with the Rb/E2F pathway can result in hyper-proliferative cells that overtime can acquire and accumulate additional mutations, which could lead to tumorigenesis. To prevent hyper-proliferation, aberrant cells can be eliminated through apoptosis. E2F can induce apoptosis through two pathways: through transactivation of the …

Genotyping Of Tgif Polymorphisms Associated With Schizophrenia And Psychosis, George Vera Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Polymorphisms in Transforming Growth β-Induced Factor (TGIF) have been found to contribute to the risk of development of psychosis and related disorders. Identifying the genes responsible for causing schizophrenia and psychosis will allow for treatment at an earlier stage of development, saving the patient problems, time, and money. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the haplotype of DNA samples obtained from earlier experiments. The DNA samples were collected from people with schizophrenia in Costa Rica, Southern Texas, and Northern Mexico. The samples were tested using 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Haplotypes …

Dna Staged Self-Assembly At Temperature 1, Nicholas H. Guiterrez May 2010

Dna Staged Self-Assembly At Temperature 1, Nicholas H. Guiterrez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

We introduce alternate temperature 1 self-assembly constructions of an n x n square by efficiently utilizing bins and stages to achieve desirable results. These bins are able to contain a variety of tiles or supertiles, which are then mixed together in a pre-determined sequence of distinct stages. The basic 2D tile assembly model at temperature 1 uses 2n-1 tile types to construct a square. The model only utilizes one bin and occurs all in one stage. We will demonstrate how the use of bins and stages will allow for the construction of these squares more efficiently.

Does Tactile Stimulation Attenuate The Adverse Effects Of Maternal Separations In Rats?, Nancy I. Salinas May 2010

Does Tactile Stimulation Attenuate The Adverse Effects Of Maternal Separations In Rats?, Nancy I. Salinas

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Handling has been used as a stressor and a stress-protector in research on development in rats. Tactile stimulation (TS), on the other hand, has consistently been shown to favorably affect the performance and exploratory behaviors of stressed rats in novel environments and this effect is usually interpreted as evidence of attenuating the developmentally-related emotional consequences of stress. In the present study, the effects of TS during maternal separation (MS) were explored during a critical period of development in rats. An open-field task to measure exploratory behavior was used as a dependent measure of anxiety at a pre-pubertal period. It was …

Effect Of Indomethacin On Bile Acid-Phospholipid Interactions: Implication For Small Intestinal Injury Induced By Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Yong Zhou, Elizabeth J Dial, Rand Doyen, Lenard M Lichtenberger May 2010

Effect Of Indomethacin On Bile Acid-Phospholipid Interactions: Implication For Small Intestinal Injury Induced By Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Yong Zhou, Elizabeth J Dial, Rand Doyen, Lenard M Lichtenberger

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The injurious effect of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the small intestine was not appreciated until the widespread use of capsule endoscopy. Animal studies found that NSAID-induced small intestinal injury depends on the ability of these drugs to be secreted into the bile. Because the individual toxicity of amphiphilic bile acids and NSAIDs directly correlates with their interactions with phospholipid membranes, we propose that the presence of both NSAIDs and bile acids alters their individual physicochemical properties and enhances the disruptive effect on cell membranes and overall cytotoxicity. We utilized in vitro gastric AGS and intestinal IEC-6 cells and found …

Handling Concept Drift In Text Data Stream Constrained By High Labelling Cost, Patrick Lindstrom, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee May 2010

Handling Concept Drift In Text Data Stream Constrained By High Labelling Cost, Patrick Lindstrom, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee

Conference papers

In many real-world classification problems the concept being modelled is not static but rather changes over time - a situation known as concept drift. Most techniques for handling concept drift rely on the true classifications of test instances being available shortly after classification so that classifiers can be retrained to handle the drift. However, in applications where labelling instances with their true class has a high cost this is not reasonable. In this paper we present an approach for keeping a classifier up-to-date in a concept drift domain which is constrained by a high cost of labelling. We use …

The Lost-Boys Phenomenon: Case Studies Of San Diego High School Males, Richard Stakelum Edd May 2010

The Lost-Boys Phenomenon: Case Studies Of San Diego High School Males, Richard Stakelum Edd

Dissertations

By most measures of success—e.g., academic Grade Point Average (GPA), graduation rates, participation in extracurricular and civic activities, and college enrollment—adolescent males are less successful than females. Young males are falling behind in reading and writing and are more likely to be involved in truancy, violence, crime, suicide, and substance abuse. While the nation mobilized to address historical gender discrimination issues for females since the 1970s, there has not been a similar effort mounted to assist adolescent males. The trends alluded to in the previous paragraph have begun to be recognized by popular-press authors. Some have begun to refer to …

Comprehensive Analysis Of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate And Gamma-Hydroxyvalerate, Jennifer Wiseman Mercer May 2010

Comprehensive Analysis Of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate And Gamma-Hydroxyvalerate, Jennifer Wiseman Mercer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and gamma-hydroxyvalerate (GHV) are suspected agents of drug facilitated sexual assault. Research is needed to improve detection methods for both drugs for a range of instrumentation commonly available to forensic chemists. GHB evidence may be introduced to the laboratory in the form of a powder, solution, beverage, or biological sample; thus a key theme of this research is overcoming matrix effects for comprehensive analyses. As GHV is not commercially available, it was synthesized for analysis via base hydrolysis of gamma-valerolactone (GVL). The results of the synthesis were confirmed using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H1NMR) …

Perception Of The Risks And Benefits Of Bt Eggplant By Indian Farmers, Mark Chong May 2010

Perception Of The Risks And Benefits Of Bt Eggplant By Indian Farmers, Mark Chong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Several researchers most notably Lennart Sjoberg and his colleagues have proposed that the moral aspects of risk provide a better explanation of risk perception than the psychometric paradigm or Cultural Theory, neither of which accounts for moral concerns. This study is possibly the first to assess empirically the perception of the risks and benefits of a transgenic food crop transgenic Bt ( Bacillus thuringiensis ) eggplant by farmers in a developing country such as India. It also aims to assess if the moral aspects of risk figure in Indian farmers' perception of Bt eggplant and if economic benefits outweigh perceived …

To determine whether a multihospital Clostridium difficile outbreak was associated with epidemic strains and whether use of particular fl uoroquinolones was associated with increased infection rates, we cultured feces from C. difficile-infected patients. Use of fl uoroquionolones with enhanced antianaerobic activity was not associated with increased infection rates.

Lack Of Consensus Among Competency Ratings Of The Same Occupation: Noise Or Substance?, Filip Lievens, Juan I. Sanchez, Dave Bartram, Anna Brown May 2010

Lack Of Consensus Among Competency Ratings Of The Same Occupation: Noise Or Substance?, Filip Lievens, Juan I. Sanchez, Dave Bartram, Anna Brown

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although rating differences among incumbents of the same occupation have traditionally been viewed as error variance in the work analysis domain, such differences might often capture substantive discrepancies in how incumbents approach their work. This study draws from job crafting, creativity, and role theories to uncover situational factors (i.e., occupational activities, context, and complexity) related to differences among competency ratings of the same occupation. The sample consisted of 192 incumbents from 64 occupations. Results showed that 25% of the variance associated with differences in competency ratings of the same occupation was related to the complexity, the context, and primarily the …

Architecture Optimization, Training Convergence And Network Estimation Robustness Of A Fully Connected Recurrent Neural Network, Xiaoyu Wang May 2010

Architecture Optimization, Training Convergence And Network Estimation Robustness Of A Fully Connected Recurrent Neural Network, Xiaoyu Wang

All Dissertations

Recurrent neural networks (RNN) have been rapidly developed in recent years. Applications of RNN can be found in system identification, optimization, image processing, pattern reorganization, classification, clustering, memory association, etc.
In this study, an optimized RNN is proposed to model nonlinear dynamical systems. A fully connected RNN is developed first which is modified from a fully forward connected neural network (FFCNN) by accommodating recurrent connections among its hidden neurons. In addition, a destructive structure optimization algorithm is applied and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is adopted as a network's training algorithm. These two algorithms can seamlessly work together to generate …

The Genetics Of Chilling Requirement In Apricot (Prunus Armeniaca L.), Bode Olukolu May 2010

The Genetics Of Chilling Requirement In Apricot (Prunus Armeniaca L.), Bode Olukolu

All Dissertations

Commercial production of apricot is severely affected by sensitivity to climatic conditions, an adaptive feature essential for cycling between vegetative or floral growth and dormancy. Yield losses are due to either late winter or early spring frosts or inhibited vegetative or floral growth caused by unfulfilled chilling requirement (CR). Studies in this dissertation developed the first high-density apricot linkage map; followed by a comparative mapping strategy to validate conservation of synteny, genome collinearity and stable quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling CR and bud break between apricot and peach; and ultimately attempt to identify key candidate genes following a linkage disequilibrium-based …

Self-Assembly Of Architecturally Complex Block Copolymers, Juan Hinestrosa May 2010

Self-Assembly Of Architecturally Complex Block Copolymers, Juan Hinestrosa

All Dissertations

The term self-assembly denotes the formation of complex structures from simpler building blocks, resembling the manner in which Nature generates functional systems. In this pursuit, block copolymers present a great opportunity to study the interactions, dynamics and self-assembly of soft matter. Block copolymers have the ability to self-assemble into thermodynamically stable microphase segregated domains of precise shape and size, which are controlled by the chemistry of the constituent blocks, their size and connectivity, temperature and solvent conditions. Specifically, in this body of work two different types of branched copolymers with polystyrene (PS) and polyisoprene (PI) constituents are studied. The complex …

The dietary supplement industry has expanded and many of these supplements have become an important aspect of people's everyday lives. In 1994, the U.S. Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) classified numerous nutraceutical/botanical products as dietary supplements because of their beneficial medicinal properties and provided the necessary regulation to the supplement producers. Since then, the interest of the scientific community towards dietary supplements has grown intensively and numerous studies have been carried out in order to understand the chemical behavior of the active molecules in the human body. The development towards analytical methods for the quantification of the active …

Investigation Of Biochemistry And Enzymology Of Acyl-Coenzyme A Synthetase, Yu Meng May 2010

Investigation Of Biochemistry And Enzymology Of Acyl-Coenzyme A Synthetase, Yu Meng

All Dissertations

Acetyl-CoA, an essential metabolite at the junction of various anabolic and catabolic pathways, is generated both from the breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids, and from the activation of acetate. AMP-forming acetyl-CoA synthetase, a key enzyme for acetate activation into acetyl-CoA in all domains of life, is a member of the adenylate-forming enzyme superfamily. Although members in the superfamily have different biological functions, they all share the property of forming an acyl-adenylate intermediate. Here I describe my research on characterization of a medium-chain acyl-CoA synthetase from Methanosarcina acetivorans (MacsMa) and identification of key residues in acyl substrate …
