Comparative Analysis Between Routine Preventative Uniformed Police Patrols And Crime Reduction And Calls For Service, Oscar F. Vigoa
Comparative Analysis Between Routine Preventative Uniformed Police Patrols And Crime Reduction And Calls For Service, Oscar F. Vigoa
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The majority of the theoretical and empirical literature on police patrols and crime has concentrated on the logical assumption that more uniformed preventative police patrols reduce crime. However, few studies have examined the comparative relationship between more police officers doing preventative patrols in a specific area and crime rates and response to calls for service. The objective of this research was to examine whether more uniformed police officers, doing routine preventative patrols, assigned to an area the size of a small city reduces class one crimes (robbery, residential, and commercial burglary and auto theft). The principal intention of the study …

Diversity Of Macroinvertebrate Feeding Guilds Along A Stream Order Continuum In San Luis Valley, Costa Rica, May 2010, Tim Schrautemeier
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Under the surface of streams, there is dominance and compositional variance among biological communities, which normally goes unobserved. The River Continuum Concept (RCC) describes shifts in biological communities caused by shifts in abiotic factors along a longitudinal gradient of a river system. Macroinvertebrates, which are influenced by the RCC, were collected and identified from 18 sites along 3.6 km of the Rio San Luis. The Morisita Index of Similarity and cluster analysis showed a difference in upper and lower reaches of the river. Canopy cover and feeding guild composition were strongly correlated. Different families showed higher dominance with and without …

Postsecondary Education Preparation/Career Exploration: Designing A Pilot Educational Counseling Program For Rural Counties, Rajinder S. Gill
Postsecondary Education Preparation/Career Exploration: Designing A Pilot Educational Counseling Program For Rural Counties, Rajinder S. Gill
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
American students accustomed to standardization in secondary education have experience with fulfilling the requirements imposed upon them, but often these students require further assistance to facilitate their personal decisions about education after high school. Postsecondary education and career preparation programs, educators, and educational counselors can provide guidance to encourage student self-awareness and goal setting. A literature review was conducted to examine current best practices in educational counseling programs and to determine if self-assessments, including Myers-Briggs and Keirsey personality tests, Visual/Auditory/Kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles assessments, and Holland Hexagon (RIASEC) vocational preference inventories, have been administered to high school students as a …

Development Of A Novel Plasmid-Based Gene Integration System For Lactobacillus Reuteri For The Persistent Treatment Of Celiac Disease, Jeremy Keith Labarge
Development Of A Novel Plasmid-Based Gene Integration System For Lactobacillus Reuteri For The Persistent Treatment Of Celiac Disease, Jeremy Keith Labarge
Master's Theses
Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that affects approximately 1% of the population [55]. CD is characterized by intestinal villus atrophy after consumption of gluten from wheat, barley, or rye. Patients with CD often experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, malnutrition, fatigue, and a failure to thrive. There is currently no treatment for CD. Patients must live on a strict lifelong exclusion of dietary gluten. Due to the high content of gluten in western diets and poor labeling of gluten content, adherence to a gluten free diet (GFD) is difficult [15].Nearly all the enzymes that can digest the gluten peptide are …

The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On Embryonic And Fetal Development In The Pregnant Mare, Jason Anton
The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On Embryonic And Fetal Development In The Pregnant Mare, Jason Anton
All Theses
Horses are natural athletes and are commonly competed during early pregnancy. Because horses have singleton pregnancies and are conditioned to human interaction, they may prove to be a useful model in lending greater understanding of the numerous etiologies of intra-uterine growth restriction that is found in women and other mammals. Currently, there has been little research conducted to determine the effects that stress, in the form of aerobic exercise, has on early embryonic and fetal development in the horse. More research is needed to further understand the effects that stress has on early conceptus development in the mare.
The research …
Shrinkage Estimation In Partially Linear Models With Measurement Error, Yifang Li
Shrinkage Estimation In Partially Linear Models With Measurement Error, Yifang Li
All Theses
In practice, measurement error in the covariates is often encountered. Measurement error has several effects when using ordinary least squares for the regression problems. In this thesis, we introduce the basic idea of correcting the bias caused by different types of measurement error. We then focus on the variable selection for partially linear models when some of the covariates are measured with additive errors. The bias caused by the measurement error is corrected by subtracting a bias correction term in the squared loss function. Adaptive LASSO is used for the variable selection procedure. The rate of convergence and the asymptotic …
Mult1e-Rgd Fusion Protein Drives Nk Cell-Mediated Anti-Tumor Response, Meg Steiner
Mult1e-Rgd Fusion Protein Drives Nk Cell-Mediated Anti-Tumor Response, Meg Steiner
All Theses
A growing body of evidence indicates that natural killer (NK) cells are paramount to the identification and elimination of cancerous and pre-cancerous cells during normal immunosurveillance. In addition, NK cells provide a vital link between the innate and adaptive immune systems during an anti-tumoral response. In the present study, a novel fusion protein was designed from the extracellular portion of mouse UL16-binding protein-like transcript 1 (MULT1), a ligand for the activating NKG2D receptor on NK cells, and a short arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) -containing peptide, which binds the integrin αvβ3 of tumor-specific neovasculature. In vitro studies showed that the fusion protein …

Interaction Of Francisella Asiatica With Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Innate Immunity, Esteban Soto, Denise Fernandez, Ronald Thune, John P. Hawke
Faculty Publications
Members of the genus Francisella are facultative intracellular bacteria that cause important diseases in a wide variety of animals worldwide, including humans and fish. Several genes that are important for intramacrophage survival have been identified, including the iglC gene, which is found in the iglABCD operon in the Francisella sp. pathogenicity island (FPI). In the present study, we examined the interaction of wild-type Francisella asiatica and a ΔiglC mutant strain with fish serum and head kidney-derived macrophages (HKDM). Both the wild-type and the mutant strains were resistant to killing by normal and heat-inactivated sera. The wild-type F. asiatica is able …

Tracing Deuterium Through The Food Web And Into Birds And Mammals Along An Elevational Gradient In The Southern Rocky Mountains, Matthew J. Baumann
Biology ETDs
Animals incorporate local δ2H values from available water and dietary sources during tissue synthesis, which can provide evidence of elevational movements if multiple tissues with different turnover times are examined. Here we test the applicability of using δ2H as an indicator of altitudinal movements by examining multiple tissues (δ2Hbw (body water), δ2Hfeather, δ2Hfur, and δ2Hclaw) in birds and mammals in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Additionally, we measured δ2Hsw (stem water) and insect δ2bw and δ2wb (whole body) values to assess changes with elevation. We sampled 15 species of birds and two small mammal species along with potential food sources …
Dispersal, Facilitation, And Burrow Architecture In Banner-Tailed Kangaroo Rats, Andrew J. Edelman
Dispersal, Facilitation, And Burrow Architecture In Banner-Tailed Kangaroo Rats, Andrew J. Edelman
Biology ETDs
The largest and most dominant kangaroo rat species in the Chihuahuan Desert is the banner-tailed kangaroo rat (Dipodomys spectabilis). This keystone species constructs mounds containing a complex burrow system around which their ecosystem engineering activities are centered. I studied a population of banner-tailed kangaroo rats at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico from 2005-2009. Specifically, I examined how banner-tailed kangaroo rats: 1) modify their mounds in response to seasonal conditions; 2) spatially affect harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex rugosus) through ecosystem engineering activities; and 3) differ in timing of natal dispersal between sexes. I used mark-recapture, genetic, experimental, and spatially-explicit methods …
Respiratory Physiology During Gravidity In Crotaphytus Collaris And Gambelia Wislizenii, Casey Anderson Gilman
Respiratory Physiology During Gravidity In Crotaphytus Collaris And Gambelia Wislizenii, Casey Anderson Gilman
Biology ETDs
During gravidity lizards experience a significant decrease in lung volume as a result of compression by growing eggs within the body cavity. In order to understand the effect of this decrease in lung volume on respiratory physiology of gravid egg-laying lizards I measured changes in: total lung volume, resting and post-exercise expired volume, minute volume, respiratory frequency, and carbon dioxide production during reproduction in Crotaphytus collaris and Gambelia wislizenii. I found that compression of the lungs by eggs resulted in an average 48% (range: 26 to 70%) decrease in total lung volume in C. collaris, and an average 38% (range: …
Molecular Phylogenetic Investigation Of Microbial Diversity And Nitrogen Cycling In Lava Tubes, Jennifer Jane Marshall Hathaway
Molecular Phylogenetic Investigation Of Microbial Diversity And Nitrogen Cycling In Lava Tubes, Jennifer Jane Marshall Hathaway
Biology ETDs
Worldwide, lava tubes host colorful microbial mats on their walls and ceilings. Little is known about the diversity and ecological roles of the bacteria communities in the subsurface ecosystem of lava tubes. White and yellow microbial mats were collected from four lava tubes from the Azorean island of Terceira and from four lava tubes on the Big Island of Hawaii, to compare and contrast the diversity of bacteria found in lava tubes. The 16S rRNA gene was sequenced in order to determine the diversity within these caves, and to begin to elucidate the environmental controls on microbial diversity in the …

This research investigated three study topics pertaining to the habitat and ecology of the Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas anicia cloudcrofti) with the goal of contributing to effective conservation for this rare species. In the first study, abiotic and biotic habitat variables were found to be different between occupied and unoccupied habitat. Connectivity, host plant resource concentration, and plant structural diversity corresponded with butterfly presence at the scales of landscape, meadow, host plant patch, and natal host plant. High habitat quality, low isolation, broad host plant patch area, and high host plant patch density were associated with occupied habitats. Adults …
The Accuracy Of Observers' Estimates Of The Effect Of Glare On Nighttime Vision: Do We Exaggerate The Disabling Effects Of Glare?, Stacy Balk
All Dissertations
Designing headlights involves balancing two conflicting goals: maximizing visibility for the driver and minimizing the disabling effects of glare for other drivers. Complaints of headlight glare have increased recently. This project explored the relationship between subjective (discomfort and expected visual problems) and objective (actual visual problems) consequences of glare. Two experiments - a lab-based psychophysical study and a field study - quantified the accuracy of observers' estimates of the effects of glare on their acuity. In both experiments, participants over-estimated the extent to which glare degraded their ability to see a small high contrast target. Observers' estimates of the disabling …
Initial Analysis O F The 3' Spliced Region Of The Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Ret, Ananya Sengupta
Initial Analysis O F The 3' Spliced Region Of The Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Ret, Ananya Sengupta
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The RET proto-oncogene is expressed in the developing kidney and enteric nervous system during vertebrate embryogenesis. It has two major splicing variants; RET9 and RET51. The expression pattern of the two variants appears to vary among the developing organisms. RET9 plays a major role in development of kidney and excretory system whereas the role of RET 51 seems to be of maintenance of these systems after development. The protein RET is a transmembrane receptor which expresses itself in the cell surface and initiates the signal transduction pathways for cellular differentiation and proliferation of the cell. The different expression patterns shown …

Enhanced Psychosocial Well-Being Following Participation In A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program Is Associated With Increased Natural Killer Cell Activity., Carolyn Y Fang, Diane K Reibel, Margaret L Longacre, Steven Rosenzweig, Donald E Campbell, Steven D Douglas
Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs have consistently been shown to enhance the psychosocial well-being of participants. Given the well-established association between psychosocial factors and immunologic functioning, it has been hypothesized that enhanced psychosocial well-being among MBSR participants would be associated with corresponding changes in markers of immune activity.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to examine changes in psychosocial and immunologic measures in a heterogeneous patient sample following participation in a MBSR program.
DESIGN: A single-group, pretest/post-test design was utilized.
SETTING: The intervention was conducted at an academic health center.
SUBJECTS: This pilot study involved 24 participants (aged …

Apolipoprotein B-Mediated Control Of Staphylococcus Aureus Virulence, Meghan Michal Peterson
Apolipoprotein B-Mediated Control Of Staphylococcus Aureus Virulence, Meghan Michal Peterson
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Staphylococcus aureus is a colonizer of the human skin and mucosa that can cause minor to severe disease. Originally afflicting patients at the extremes of age or those with immunocompromising co-morbidities, S. aureus strains have emerged that cause invasive disease in otherwise healthy populations with no health-care associated risk factors. In addition, these community-acquired strains predominately contain antibiotic resistance genes, making them difficult to treat with conventional interventions. Invasive disease in S. aureus is partly regulated by a quorum sensing signaling system that relies on the secretion and signaling function of a bacterial peptide pheromone (AIP). S. aureus strains that …
Development Of Presynaptic Calcium Dynamics And Short-Term Plasticity In The Sc-Ca1 Synapse, Chessa Scullin
Development Of Presynaptic Calcium Dynamics And Short-Term Plasticity In The Sc-Ca1 Synapse, Chessa Scullin
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Following a presynaptic action potential, there is a rapid rise of [Ca2+]i in the immediate vicinity of Ca2+ channels that triggers membrane fusion and release of transmitter from vesicles within this microdomain. This presynaptic Ca2+ signal ([Ca2+]pre) then disperses to produce a residual Ca2+ ([Ca2+]res) that decays over the course of tens to hundreds of milliseconds. The [Ca2+]res has important implications in synaptic plasticity and is the basis for working memory storage. Ultimately [Ca2+]res is removed from the cytoplasm either into intracellular organelles or across the plasma membrane into the extracellular environment. Calcium influx pathways, cytoplasmic Ca2+ buffering proteins, and …
Cellular Localization And Expression Of Ski Family Proteins In Rhabdomyosarcoma, Brian Lee Reinert
Cellular Localization And Expression Of Ski Family Proteins In Rhabdomyosarcoma, Brian Lee Reinert
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Ski and SnoN are two highly related transcription factors that are transcribed from two separate genes named SKI and SKIL, respectively. They are both co-repressors of the Smad-mediated transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) signaling pathway. Originally they were classified as oncogenes as they have the ability to transform quail fibroblasts. However, they have also been found to have anti-proliferative properties so they are also considered tumor suppressors. They are involved in normal growth and development and thought to be essential as there is evidence that a homozygous mouse knockout of either SKI or SKIL is embryonic lethal. Both Ski and …

Relative Contributions Of Zinc And Calcium To Acute Injury To Hippocampal Ca1 Neurons, Robert M. Dietz
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Spreading depression (SD) is a wave of severe depolarization that spreads across brain tissue. For several decades, it has been suggested that (SD) may play a role in the expansion of brain injury following ischemic insults, and may also be involved in non-injurious pathologies such as migraine aura. The major goals of this study were to examine cellular mechanisms that contribute to the initiation of different forms of SD, and in particular the potential roles of the cations Ca2+ and Zn2+. Work in this thesis examined SD in hippocampal slices acutely prepared from adult mice. Initial studies used the Na+/K+ …
