Gas-Phase Surface Modification Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Polymers, Fei Lu
Gas-Phase Surface Modification Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Polymers, Fei Lu
Theses
Gas-phase surface modification is a key technology for the processing and manufacture of many materials. Three experimental methods were used in this research to modify the surfaces: (1) Vacuum UV (VUV) photo-oxidation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) paper, polystyrene and Nafion®-117; (2) Microwave (MW) plasma discharge of an Ar-O2 mixture producing oxygen atoms in the absence of radiation to treat SWNT paper and polystyrene; and (3) UV bromination employing photolysis of gaseous HBr at different wavelengths (253.7 & 184.9 nm and 253.7 nm) to treat SWNT paper and powder. The quantitative and chemical changes in the top 2-5 nm of …
Pho13 Phosphoglycolate Phosphatase From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (Baker’S Yeast), A Member Of The P-Nitrophenylphosphatase Family Of The Haloalkanoic Acid Dehalogenase (Had) Superfamily, Regina Puts
Theses
The function of phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGPase) in photosynthetic organisms such as green algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardti) is to recycle the 2-phosphoglycolate that is formed as a by-product of the Calvin cycle. The role of PGPase in nonphotosynthetic organisms is less understood, but one potential role that has been suggested is to remove the 2-phosphoglycolate that is formed as a result of DNA repair. This may be the biological role of PHO13 PGPase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae as well. PHO13 PGPase from S. cerevisiae is a member of the PGPase subfamily within the p-nitrophenylphosphatase (p-NPPase) family, which is within the Haloalkanoic Acid Dehalogenase …
Topological & Network Theoretic Approaches In Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, Ryan H. Lewis
Topological & Network Theoretic Approaches In Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, Ryan H. Lewis
Theses
Hyperspectral remote sensing is a valuable new technology that has numerous com- mercial and scientific applications. For example, it has been used to study crop health, mineral and soil composition, and pollution levels. Hyperspectral imaging also has im- portant military and intelligence applications such as the identification of man-made materials, and detection of chemical and biological plumes. The key mathematical challenges of hyperspectral imaging include image classification, anomaly detection, and target detection. Image classification is the process of grouping pixels into spec- trally similar clusters. This thesis describes a new topological and network-theoretic approach for classifying pixels in hyperspectral image …
The Transformation Of Persons And The Concept Of Moral Order: A Study Of The Evangelical Ethics Of Oliver O'Donovan With Special Reference To The Barth-Brunner Debate, Bruce D. Baker
SPU Works
This dissertation investigates the evangelical ethics of Prof. Oliver O’Donovan in order to explore the implications of his “evangelical realism” for theological anthropology, moral knowledge and the concept of moral order. The Barth-Brunner debate regarding natural theology provides a lens onto these issues. Theological case studies are used to test our findings.
Chapter 1 provides an overture to these issues, paying attention to current ideas about human nature and morality, and the growing influence of neuroscience and evolutionary psychology.
Chapter 2 focuses on Resurrection and Moral Order, and elucidates the salient factors in its outline for evangelical ethics.
Chapter …

A Comparison Of The Wishes Of Hospitalized Patients Regarding Prayer From Healthcare Professionals In Religious Based And Non Religious Based Healthcare Facilities, Jessica White, Tracy Polley
Graduate Research Projects
Aim
This paper examines patient’s desire for prayer from their health care providers and looks at the difference in prayer frequency between religious and non-religious based hospitals.
Background
Continued debate surrounds this concept: How much spiritual care should be integrated into the medical field? Many theorists have included spirituality as an integral part to holistic care. Therefore healthcare providers should address prayer and spirituality.
Method
A convenience sampling of 93 patients was taken from a government and a religious based hospital in southeastern Tennessee. The questionnaire used was specifically designed for the study. Information collected included demographics, religious affiliation, habits …
Gender Differences In Sitting Positions Of College Students And An Explanation Of These Differences, Celie Morin, Jessica Maxfield
Gender Differences In Sitting Positions Of College Students And An Explanation Of These Differences, Celie Morin, Jessica Maxfield
Perspectives
This article explores the differences in the sitting positions of college men and women. After conducting unobtrusive observations of 83 students at the University of New Hampshire, we analyzed our data and found that there are differences in the way men and women sit. Men tend to sit in open positions while women tend to sit in closed positions. Differences in leg positions were more notable than differences in arm positions. In regard to arm and leg combinations, the most common combination for men was open arm/open leg. There were no significant differences between arm and leg combinations of women. …
The Indirect Effects Of Family Structure On Drug Use In Adolescents, Maureen Corsetti
The Indirect Effects Of Family Structure On Drug Use In Adolescents, Maureen Corsetti
Perspectives
This paper focuses on explaining the significant relationship between family structure and adolescent drug abuse. Significant differences in drug abuse frequency and patterns among adolescents living in two-parent, step-parent, and single-parent households does not show to be directly related to family structure, but rather attributable to the variation of social controls and family processes that occur among the diverse types of households. My thesis is that adolescents living in two-biological-parent households will be less likely to participate in drug abuse than adolescents living in one-parent or step-parent households because there is more supervision and monitoring as well as a better …

Family, Peers And School Programs And The Influence On Juvenile Marijuana Use, Victoria Vinciguerra
Perspectives
Drug use has is a common form of deviance among adolescents. This paper focuses on the different ways that social institutions try to positively or negatively influence juveniles from becoming involved in drug use. I will provide evidence on school programs and give conclusions on the helpfulness of them. I will also write about the parent-child relationship and whether or not this is a main influence of substance abuse. Finally, the peer group will be analyzed to determine how much of an effect they might have. These three factors will be explored throughout the content of this literature review. By …

Organophosphorus Pesticides Decrease M2 Muscarinic Receptor Function In Guinea Pig Airway Nerves Via Indirect Mechanisms, Becky J. Proskocil, Donald A. Bruun, Charles M. Thompson, Allison D. Fryer, Pamela J. Lein
Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Epidemiological studies link organophosphorus pesticide (OP) exposures to asthma, and we have shown that the OPs chlorpyrifos, diazinon and parathion cause airway hyperreactivity in guinea pigs 24 hr after a single subcutaneous injection. OP-induced airway hyperreactivity involves M2 muscarinic receptor dysfunction on airway nerves independent of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition, but how OPs inhibit neuronal M2 receptors in airways is not known. In the central nervous system, OPs interact directly with neurons to alter muscarinic receptor function or expression; therefore, in this study we tested whether the OP parathion or its oxon metabolite, paraoxon, might decrease M2 receptor function on …

An Equivalence Test Based On N And P, Markus Neuhäeuser
An Equivalence Test Based On N And P, Markus Neuhäeuser
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
An equivalence test is proposed which is based on the P-value of a test for a difference and the sample size. This test may be especially appropriate for an exploratory re-analysis if only a non-significant test for a difference was reported. Thus, neither a confidence interval is available, nor is there access to the raw data. The test is illustrated using two examples; for both applications the smallest equivalence range for which equivalence could be demonstrated is calculated.

Detection And Filtering Of Landmark Occlusions Using Terrain Spatiograms, Damian M. Lyons
Detection And Filtering Of Landmark Occlusions Using Terrain Spatiograms, Damian M. Lyons
Faculty Publications
A team of robots cooperating to quickly produce a map needs to share landmark information between members so that the local maps can be accurately merged. However, the appearance of landmarks as seen by members of the team can change dramatically due to the phenomenon of occlusion.
We have previously presented an approach to landmark representation using Terrain Spatiograms – an extension to image spatiograms in which the spatial information relates to the scene rather than the image. Because this representation preserves depth structure, it is possible to identify and filter potential occlusions.
We present an approach to identifying and …

Age-Dependent Autonomic Changes Following Immersion In Cool, Neutral, And Warm Water Temperatures, Kasee Hildenbrand, Bruce E. Becker, Rebekah Whitcomb, James P. Sanders
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Aquatic immersion has been reported to produce a significant number of physiological changes in blood pressure, heart rate variability (HRV), autonomic nervous system (ANS), and core temperature in young healthy subjects. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of water immersion in younger and older populations, determining whether there are age related differences for ANS regulation measures in cool, neutral and warm water. Vitals and ANS measures were collected from two samples representing different age-groups in the general population. It was found that water immersion produced a significant number of important physiologic responses such as decreased blood …

Development Of Representative Species-Level Molecular Markers And Morphological Character Analysis Of Leucothoid Amphipods (Crustacea: Amphipoda), Kristine Nicolle White
Development Of Representative Species-Level Molecular Markers And Morphological Character Analysis Of Leucothoid Amphipods (Crustacea: Amphipoda), Kristine Nicolle White
Dissertations
Leucothoid amphipods were investigated using morphology and molecular rDNA gene sequence fragments. The morphological diagnostic characters for traditional taxonomy have been clarified, a molecular marker for representative species has been developed, and one of the current anamorph-leucomorph connections has been confirmed with molecular sequence data. Ultimately this study has combined traditional morphological and modern molecular methods to clarify the taxonomy and to propose a preliminary phylogeny of the Leucothoidae. Analysis of 18S rDNA gene fragments from 13 species in two genera supported the current morphological species designations and the separation of the family into two clades. Combined analysis of 18S …
Systematic Revision Of The Kalliapseudidae (Crustacea: Peracarida: Tanaidacea) And The Population Genetic Structure And Phylogeography Of A Species Along The Southeastern And Gulf Coasts Of North America, David Thomas Drumm
Dissertations
The Kalliapseudidae is a family of shallow burrow-dwelling marine and estuarine tanaidaceans. There are currently 39 known species of 12 genera and three subfamilies. They are primarily circumtropical in distribution; however, several species are found in temperate waters. The phylogeny of Kalliapseudidae is assessed to test the monophyly of currently accepted subfamilies and genera, based largely on examination of material loaned from various museums and institutions. Multiple exemplars from other apseudomorph families were also included in the ingroup to test the monophyly of the family. Parsimony analyses included 41 terminal taxa and 64 binary and multistate morphological characters. Analyses based …

Determinants Of Child Nutritional Status In Zambia: An Analysis Of A National Survey, Felix Masiye, Chitalu Chama, Bona Chitah, Dick Jonsson
Zambia Social Science Journal
Malnutrition affects many children and is a leading cause of childhood mortality and non-fatal health loss. Zambia has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. About half of the Zambian children are stunted while one in five is underweight. Prevalence of wasting is much lower. This article examines the determinants of nutritional status among children aged below five years in Zambia using data from a national cross-sectional survey conducted in 2006. Multivariate analysis is used to quantify the effects of several household and child-specific socioeconomic and demographic factors on nutritional status, as well as a geographic context …

Correlated Evolution Of Defensive And Nutritional Traits In Native And Non-Native Plants, Nicole Molinari, Charles A. Knight
Correlated Evolution Of Defensive And Nutritional Traits In Native And Non-Native Plants, Nicole Molinari, Charles A. Knight
Biological Sciences
We performed a comparative analysis of defensive and nutritional plant traits responsible for differential herbivory in a series of experimental feeding trials with generalist herbivores. We measured three defensive traits (leaf strength, leaf mass per unit area and endophytic fungal infection) and two nutritional traits (foliar nitrogen and water) for 26 native and eight non-native plant species from coastal California shrublands. Our feeding trials involved three species of generalist herbivore (beet armyworm, cabbage looper and the garden snail) in two types of laboratory feeding trial (single plant species and preference tests). All traits were significantly related to the amount of …
