Alkylphenol Contamination In Homarus Americanus, Jennifer Renee Urban
Alkylphenol Contamination In Homarus Americanus, Jennifer Renee Urban
Honors Scholar Theses
Alkylphenols are pollutants that are present in marine sediments and fishes. In earlier work it has been discovered that alkylphenols are present in the Homarus americanus, or the American lobster. Research suggests that alkylphenols could behave as endocrine disruptors as they have been found to affect juvenile hormone activity. It has been hypothesized that lobsters may be able to rid themselves of alkylphenol contamination through secreting these compounds into the environment or sequestering them in their tissues. In this study, I address the question of how lobsters may rid themselves of alkylphenols by analyzing hemolymph, muscle, gill, and shell samples …
Carbon Finance & Cattle Externalities In The Brazilian Amazon: Pricing Reforestation In Terms Of Restoration Ecology, Christian T. Hofer
Carbon Finance & Cattle Externalities In The Brazilian Amazon: Pricing Reforestation In Terms Of Restoration Ecology, Christian T. Hofer
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper evaluates land-use conflict between cattle pasture and tropical rainforest in the Brazilian Amazon and attempts to reconcile negative production externalities within the framework of carbon finance. Specifically, it analyzes the price per metric ton of CO2e that would make reforestation projects, in terms of restoration ecology, a viable land-use alternative. Regional information on opportunity, implementation, and transaction costs is used to develop a partial equilibrium cost-benefit analysis, in which carbon sequestration is the only benefit. Financing is employed through Kyoto’s Clean Development Mechanism and long-term certified emission reductions (lCERs) are the carbon financial instrument modeled. Results indicate that …
Dopaminergic Innervation Of The Subventricular Zone In The Murine Brain, Linda Beth Drozdowicz
Dopaminergic Innervation Of The Subventricular Zone In The Murine Brain, Linda Beth Drozdowicz
Honors Scholar Theses
The subventricular zone (SVZ) is one of two areas in the brain that, in a healthy mouse, continually generate neurons throughout adulthood. While it was previously thought that only the A9 neurons of the substantia nigra sent dopaminergic afferents to the SVZ, recent studies suggest that the A10 neurons of the ventral tegmental area may innervate this area. This project has aimed to discover which, if either, model is correct.
Examination of the Aphakia (AK) mouse was used to determine the role of distinct midbrain regions in SVZ regulation. Additionally, intraperitoneal injections of the chemical MPTP were used to deduce …
Building Steprelationships: Emerging Adult Stepchildrens' Perceptions And Experiences Of Their Stepparents, Luke Thomas Russell
Building Steprelationships: Emerging Adult Stepchildrens' Perceptions And Experiences Of Their Stepparents, Luke Thomas Russell
Honors Scholar Theses
A grounded theory study was conducted with ten (7 female, 3 male) emerging-adults in stepfamilies to examine their perceptions and experiences of their stepparents, and what factors influence the development and maintenance of these steprelationships. Three primary categories emerged from the data: (1) Stepchildrens' perceptions of their stepparents presence in their lives, including both physical closeness and physical and emotional involvement (2) The perceived level of authenticity within the steprelationship, and (3) The level of clout stepchildren afforded to their stepparents' position within their lives and families.
Additional factors found to influence the levels of presence, authenticity, and clout were …

Regulation Of Pannexin 1 Channels By Atp, Feng Qiu
Regulation Of Pannexin 1 Channels By Atp, Feng Qiu
Open Access Dissertations
Pannexins represent a recently discovered second family of gap junction proteins in vertebrates. However, instead of forming intercellular gap junction channels like connexins, pannexins operate as unpaired pannexons, allowing the flux of molecules from the cytoplasm to the extracellular space and vice versa. Pannexins appear to play a vital role in the local control loop of blood perfusion and oxygen delivery. The properties of Panx1 channels indicate that this protein is the most probable candidate for an ATP release channel and is involved in the propagation of intercellular calcium waves. It is also proposed to mediate the large pore formation …
The Effect Of Salinity Variability On The Mesozooplankton Community Of Florida Bay, Christopher R. Kelble
The Effect Of Salinity Variability On The Mesozooplankton Community Of Florida Bay, Christopher R. Kelble
Open Access Dissertations
The greater Everglades ecosystem, including Florida Bay, has undergone significant anthropogenic manipulation over the past century. These actions resulted in a series of ecologically undesirable events in the Everglades ecosystem, prompting passage of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). It is necessary to understand the variability in, and relationship between, salinity and ecology to fully evaluate the potential effects of CERP on Florida Bay. A seven-year dataset on surface salinity along with eleven-year and eight-year datasets on mesozooplankton and planktivorous fish were analyzed. Overall, mean Bay-wide salinity varied from a low of 24.2 just after the passing of Hurricane Irene …

Future Bionic, Ryan J. Huber
Future Bionic, Ryan J. Huber
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Future Bionic is a study into how biological processes can be reinterpreted and applied to revolutionize the idea of performance in buildings. The term bionic refers to the combining of a natural system and a mechanical system or technology [bionics]. Biomimicry refers to the copying or imitation of a natural systems processes [biomimicry]. Future Bionic is a hybrid of both concepts, in which I am looking at how principles of bionics and biomimicry can be used to design a built environment that begins to blur the edges between the natural and man-made world. Both bionics and biomimicry can be used …

Expression Of Human Neutrophil Elastase In K. Lactis., Haley M. Klimecki
Expression Of Human Neutrophil Elastase In K. Lactis., Haley M. Klimecki
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Human neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell and provide the body with a line of defense against foreign, infectious microorganisms. Contained within the azurophilic granules in the cytoplasm of neutrophils are three serine proteases, Human Neutrophil Elastase, Cathepsin G, and Protease 3. Once a foreign bacterium is engulfed by white blood cells, these enzymes attack and degrade the invading body, thus killing it (Reeves et al., 2002). The focus of this research is centered on the production of one of the serine proteases, human neutrophil elastase (HNE), and while the importance of HNE can be seen, …

Could Light Harvesting Complexes Exhibit Non-Classical Effects At Room Temperature?, Mark M. Wilde, James M. Mccracken, Ari Mizel

Mounting experimental and theoretical evidence suggest that coherent quantum effects play a role in the efficient transfer of an excitation from a chlorosome antenna to a reaction centre in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson protein complex. However, it is conceivable that a satisfying alternate interpretation of the results is possible in terms of a classical theory. To address this possibility, we consider a class of classical theories satisfying the minimal postulates of macrorealism and frame Leggett-Garg-type tests that could rule them out. Our numerical simulations indicate that even in the presence of decoherence, several tests could exhibit the required violations of the Leggett-Garg …

Compulsory Death: A Historiographic Study Of The Eugenics And Euthanasia Movements In Nazi Germany., Michael Creed Hawkins
Compulsory Death: A Historiographic Study Of The Eugenics And Euthanasia Movements In Nazi Germany., Michael Creed Hawkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a historiographical study of the eugenics and euthanasia programs of Nazi Germany. It traces there development from the end of World War One to the fall of Hitler's Third Reich. There are three stages in this study. First, I examine eugenics after World War One and the effect the era had on society. Then I study the Nazi transition from eugenics measures to "euthanasia", and last I analyze the transferring of the killing methods from the "euthanasia" centers to the concentration camps. The questions of how did the idea for eugenics develop in Germany society, what role …
Inhibition Of Escherichia Coli Atp Synthase By Polyphenols And Their Derivatives., Prasanna Keerthi Dadi
Inhibition Of Escherichia Coli Atp Synthase By Polyphenols And Their Derivatives., Prasanna Keerthi Dadi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We have studied the inhibitory effect of natural and structurally modified polyphenols on Escherichia coli ATP synthase to test (I) if the beneficial dietary effects of polyphenols are related to their inhibitory actions on ATP synthase, (II) if inhibitory effects of polyphenolic compound could be augmented through structural modifications, and (III) if they can act as antimicrobial agent through their actions on ATP synthesis. X-ray crystal structures of polyphenol binding sites suggested that polyphenols bind at a distinct polyphenol binding pocket, at the interface of α,β,γ-subunits. We found that both natural and modified polyphenols inhibit E. coli ATP synthase to …
Assessing Commercial Organic And Conventionally Grown Vegetables By Monitoring Selected Heavy Metals Found In Them., Charles Kafui Dotse
Assessing Commercial Organic And Conventionally Grown Vegetables By Monitoring Selected Heavy Metals Found In Them., Charles Kafui Dotse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Commercially available organic and conventionally grown vegetables were studied by quantitative determination of selected metals in them and to determine if any differences found are statistically significant. These findings can help the consumers to determine if the vegetable products are within the recommended maximum limits as proposed by the joint FAO/WHO Expert committee on organic foods designation. Eight edible vegetables were purchased from local stores in both the organic and conventionally grown categories. Samples were digested with concentrated nitric acid and the metals monitored were zinc, copper, lead, iron, cadmium, and nickel using flame atomic absorption. The concentration range for …

Political Accommodation: The Effects Of Booker T. Washington's Leadership And Legacy On Tuskegee University And The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment., Dominique Dubois Gilliard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this re-evaluation of the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, I identify the original causes that made the Study emerge, examine why the intent of this research shifted over time, reveal the manner in which the Study was conducted, expose the role the government played in the manipulation of the Experiment, and, finally, investigate the ways, as well as the reasons, for the selection of the participants involved in the Study. After exploring the Experiment itself, I investigate the lasting effects of it on the community in which it occurred and the ways in which it further affected the relationship between African …

Critical-Incident Response: A Study Of Training, Management, And Mitigation In North Carolina Sheriffs' Offices., Gregory Alan Minton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of training each sheriff's office requires in North Carolina and if that training includes multiagency exercises designed to mitigate a critical-incident response and identify any concerns from those training events. The study also compared departmental strength (number of sworn officers per agency) with county populations and geographic area of the state the agency is located in with the number of hours required annually by each agency. Finally, each agency was asked if it had participated in a multiagency exercise and a multiagency incident and to identify any issues that occurred …
Generating Compact Wasp Nest Structures Via Minimal Complexity Algorithms., Fadel Ewusi Kofi Adoe
Generating Compact Wasp Nest Structures Via Minimal Complexity Algorithms., Fadel Ewusi Kofi Adoe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many models have been developed to explain the process of self organization-the emergence of seemingly purposeful behaviors from groups of entities with limited individual intelligence. However, the underlying behavior that facilitates the emergence of this global pattern is not generally well understood. Our study focuses on different low complexity building algorithms and characterizes how nests are built using these algorithms. Three rules postulated to be functions of wasps' building behavior were developed. First is the random rule, in which there is no constraint per the choice of site to be initiated. The second is the 2-cell rule where only sites …
Isolation And Identification Of The Siderophore "Vicibactin" Produced By Rhizobium Leguminosarum Atcc 14479., William H. Wright Iv
Isolation And Identification Of The Siderophore "Vicibactin" Produced By Rhizobium Leguminosarum Atcc 14479., William H. Wright Iv
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Siderophores are small, iron chelating molecules produced by many bacteria to help meet the iron requirements of the cell. Multiple metabolic functions require iron as it serves as a cofactor in many enzymes and cellular processes. However, in the presence of oxygen and at physiologic pH, iron forms insoluble ferric complexes that cause the nutrient to be unavailable to bacterial cells. Siderophores alleviate this limitation by chelating the ferric iron, rendering it soluble and available for uptake. One group of microorganisms known for their ability to produce siderophores is the rhizobia. These bacteria are characterized both by their formation of …

Hermit Thrush (Catharus Guttatus) And Veery (C. Fuscescens) Breeding Habitat Associations In Southern Appalachian High-Elevation Forests., Andrew J. Laughlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Hermit Thrush is a new breeding bird in the Southern Appalachian high-elevation mountains, having expanded its range southward over the last few decades. Here it is sympatric with the Veery, a congeneric breeding resident. In order to more fully understand why the range expansion took place and to understand more about the local ecology of the newly arrived bird, I measured several habitat variables in 30 Hermit Thrush and 24 Veery territories. Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis brought to light several patterns of habitat preferences for these 2 species. Hermit Thrushes prefer territories with more leaf litter on …
Error Correcting Codes And The Human Genome., Suzanne Mclean Lyle
Error Correcting Codes And The Human Genome., Suzanne Mclean Lyle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this work, we study error correcting codes and generalize the concepts with a view toward a novel application in the study of DNA sequences. The author investigates the possibility that an error correcting linear code could be included in the human genome through application and research. The author finds that while it is an accepted hypothesis that it is reasonable that some kind of error correcting code is used in DNA, no one has actually been able to identify one. The author uses the application to illustrate how the subject of coding theory can provide a teaching enrichment activity …
Characteristics Of Nectar Production And Standing Crop In Campsis Radicans (Bignoniaceae)., Andrea Alexis Edge
Characteristics Of Nectar Production And Standing Crop In Campsis Radicans (Bignoniaceae)., Andrea Alexis Edge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We examined several aspects of nectar production in Campsis radicans to better understand how standing crop is affected and how production affects pollinator visitation. In all experiments, nectar and concentration of flowers were measured and total sugar was calculated. Flowers do not produce additional nectar unless nectar is removed, and it is not resorbed. Volume of standing crop and total sugar fluctuates throughout the day, whereas concentration remains constant. Age and time of day significantly affect regeneration of nectar and sugar. The number of removals did not significantly affect the amount of nectar or sugar regenerated; however, concentration declined significantly …
