On The Recurrent Ulva Prolifera Blooms In The Yellow Sea And East China Sea, Chuanmin Hu, Daqiu Li, Changsheng Chen, Jianzhong Ge, Frank E. Muller-Karger, Junpeng Liu, Feng Yu, Ming-Xia He

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A massive bloom of the green macroalgae Ulva prolifera (previously known as Enteromorpha prolifera) occurred in June 2008 in the Yellow Sea (YS), resulting in perhaps the largest “green tide” event in history. Using a novel index (Floating Algae Index) and multiresolution remote sensing data from MODIS and Landsat, we show that U. prolifera patches appeared nearly every year between April and July 2000–2009 in the YS and/or East China Sea (ECS), which all originated from the nearshore Subei Bank. A finite volume numerical circulation model, driven by realistic forcing and boundary conditions, confirmed this finding. Analysis of meteorological/environmental …

A Multi-Wilkinson Power Divider Based Complex Reflection Coefficient Detector, James Roger Cooper May 2010

A Multi-Wilkinson Power Divider Based Complex Reflection Coefficient Detector, James Roger Cooper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the field of applied electromagnetics, there is always a need to create new methods for electrical characterization of materials, systems, devices, etc. Many applications need small and/or inexpensive equipment in performing these characterizations. The current method for making measurements of electrical properties at frequencies above 300 MHz, the transmission/reflection method, has severe limitations in these areas due large size and high price of the necessary equipment for making them. Therefore, presented herein is the conceptualization, design and analysis of a complex reflection coefficient detector which is relatively small, lightweight, and inexpensive.

A reflection coefficient detector is a device designed …

Functional Enrichment Analyses And Construction Of Functional Similarity Networks With High Confidence Function Prediction By Pfp., Troy Hawkins, Meghana Chitale, Daisuke Kihara May 2010

Functional Enrichment Analyses And Construction Of Functional Similarity Networks With High Confidence Function Prediction By Pfp., Troy Hawkins, Meghana Chitale, Daisuke Kihara

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

A new paradigm of biological investigation takes advantage of technologies that produce large high throughput datasets, including genome sequences, interactions of proteins, and gene expression. The ability of biologists to analyze and interpret such data relies on functional annotation of the included proteins, but even in highly characterized organisms many proteins can lack the functional evidence necessary to infer their biological relevance.

Results

Here we have applied high confidence function predictions from our automated prediction system, PFP, to three genome sequences, Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Plasmodium falciparum (malaria). The number of annotated genes is increased by …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Aspergillus And Related Fungi Based Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase 1, Shaunte Hulett-Abdin May 2010

Phylogenetic Analysis Of Aspergillus And Related Fungi Based Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase 1, Shaunte Hulett-Abdin

Theses (Pre-2016)

Microorganisms are hypothesized to experience rapid rates of mutation in space due to microgravity and ionizing radiation. As an initial effort to test the relative rates to which certain genes evolve under space-like conditions, we reviewed the usefulness and reliability of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (Cal) gene in resolving the evolutionary relationships of Aspergillus and related fungi. The objectives of this study are to 1) characterize the mitochondrial Cal gene of Aspergillus and related fungi, 2) align the homologous sequences of Cal genes across the selected taxa, and 3) conduct phylogenetic analysis using parsimony, distance methods, and maximum likelihood. Most …

The Mediterranean Sea Regime Shift At The End Of The 1980s, And Intriguing Parallelisms With Other European Basins, A Conversi, S Fonda Umani, T Peluso, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND: Regime shifts are abrupt changes encompassing a multitude of physical properties and ecosystem variables, which lead to new regime conditions. Recent investigations focus on the changes in ecosystem diversity and functioning associated to such shifts. Of particular interest, because of the implication on climate drivers, are shifts that occur synchronously in separated basins. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this work we analyze and review long-term records of Mediterranean ecological and hydro-climate variables and find that all point to a synchronous change in the late 1980s. A quantitative synthesis of the literature (including observed oceanic data, models and satellite analyses) shows that …

Establishment And Partial Characterization Of A Cell Line From Burbot Lota Lota Maculosa: Susceptibility To Ihnv, Ipnv And Vhsv, Mark P. Polinski, John D. Drennan, William N. Batts, Susan C. Ireland, Kenneth D. Cain

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

This study describes the development and partial characterization of a continuous fibroblastic-like cell line (BEF-1) developed from late stage embryos of North American burbot Lota lota maculosa. This cell line has been maintained for over 5 yr and 100 passages in vitro. Cells were cultured using Eagle’s minimum essential medium with Earle’s salts (MEM) supplemented with GlutaMAX ™, and 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), pH 7.4. The addition of penicillin-streptomycinneomycin (PSN) antibiotic mixture (0.05, 0.05, 0.1 mg ml–1, respectively) did not negatively influence cell replication; however, the antimycotic Fungizone™ (2.5 μg ml–1, amphotericin B) caused cell rounding and …

Polynucleotides Targeted Against The Extended 5′-Utr Region Of Argininosuccinate Synthase And Uses Thereof, Duane C. Eichler, Larry P. Solomonson, Laura C. Pendleton May 2010

Polynucleotides Targeted Against The Extended 5′-Utr Region Of Argininosuccinate Synthase And Uses Thereof, Duane C. Eichler, Larry P. Solomonson, Laura C. Pendleton

USF Patents

The present invention is based in part on the discovery that the upstream open reading frame (uORF) in the extended 5′-untranslated region (5′-UTR) argininosuccinate synthase (AS) mRNA species is functional, and when functional, limits overall AS expression as well as nitric oxide (NO) production. Thus, the extended 5′-UTR AS mRNA species is a mechanism for regulating AS expression and NO production, and provides a target for the treatment of pathophysiological conditions associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction and characterized by impairment of NO production, such as heart failure, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.

Juvenile Justice, Sullivan, And Graham: How The Supreme Court’S Decision Will Change The Neuroscience Debate, Johanna Cooper Jennings May 2010

Juvenile Justice, Sullivan, And Graham: How The Supreme Court’S Decision Will Change The Neuroscience Debate, Johanna Cooper Jennings

Duke Law & Technology Review

Over the past twenty years, neuroscientists have discovered that brain maturation continues through an individual’s mid-twenties. The United States Supreme Court cited this research to support its abolition of the juvenile death penalty in Roper v. Simmons. Now the Court is faced with two cases that challenge the constitutionality of sentencing juveniles to life imprisonment without parole. Many believe these studies indicate that juveniles are both less culpable for their actions and more likely to reform; therefore, life in prison for juveniles is disproportionate, cruel, and unusual. However, others caution against the use of these studies in deciding issues of …

Genomic Organization And Molecular Phylogenies Of The Beta (Β) Keratin Multigene Family In The Chicken (Gallus Gallus) And Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata): Implications For Feather Evolution, Matthew J. Greenwold, Roger H. Sawyer May 2010

Sawyer

Faculty Publications

Background: The epidermal appendages of reptiles and birds are constructed of beta (β) keratins. The molecularphylogeny of these keratins is important to understanding the evolutionary origin of these appendages, especially feathers. Knowing that the crocodilian β-keratin genes are closely related to those of birds, the published genomes ofthe chicken and zebra finch provide an opportunity not only to compare the genomic organization of their β- keratins, but to study their molecular evolution in archosaurians.

Results: The subfamilies (claw, feather, feather-like, and scale) of β-keratin genes are clustered in the same 5' to 3' orderon microchromosome 25 in chicken and zebra finch, …
