Impact Of Dbt Treatment On The Relationship Between Women’S Overall Self-Concept And Body-Image, Rachel Mueller Jun 2010

Impact Of Dbt Treatment On The Relationship Between Women’S Overall Self-Concept And Body-Image, Rachel Mueller

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Given the connection between self-concept and body-image for women recovering from eating disorders, this study researched the impact of twelve women’s participation in a body- image group in a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Center. The dialectical behavior therapy approach is of particular interest given its emphasis on mindfulness and acceptance, which may aid in decreasing the tension between how women with eating disorders view their ideal versus perceived selves. Quantitatively, this study investigated change in scores on the Total Self- concept Score (TOT) and Conflict Score (CON) of the Tennessee Self-concept Scale – 2. As hypothesized, data analysis revealed a large …

Prediction Of Protein Subcellular Localization: A Machine Learning Approach, Kyong Jin Shim Jun 2010

Prediction Of Protein Subcellular Localization: A Machine Learning Approach, Kyong Jin Shim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Subcellular localization is a key functional characteristic of proteins. Optimally combining available information is one of the key challenges in today's knowledge-based subcellular localization prediction approaches. This study explores machine learning approaches for the prediction of protein subcellular localization that use resources concerning Gene Ontology and secondary structures. Using the spectrum kernel for feature representation of amino acid sequences and secondary structures, we explore an SVM-based learning method that classifies six subcellular localization sites: endoplasmic reticulum, extracellular, Golgi, membrane, mitochondria, and nucleus.

Modeling The Differential Incidence Of "Child Abuse, Neglect And Exploitation" In Poor Households In South Africa: Focus On Child Trafficking, Paulin Mbecke Jun 2010

Modeling The Differential Incidence Of "Child Abuse, Neglect And Exploitation" In Poor Households In South Africa: Focus On Child Trafficking, Paulin Mbecke

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper is based on an in-progress Ph.D. research 2 themed: “Modeling the Differential Incidence of Child Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation in Poor Households in South Africa”. The aim of the research is to build a theoretical grounding and to propose a practical model for understanding child abuse. The research argues that the gaps and shortcomings in understanding child abuse are, to a large extent, the consequence of an over-estimation of socio-economic variables as main variables contributing to the incidence of child abuse. The paper does not attempt to collect data on child trafficking to explain its extent in South …

Isoschaftoside, A C-Glycosylflavonoid From Desmodium Uncinatum Root Exudate, Is An Allelochemical Against The Development Of Striga, Antony M. Hooper, Muniru K. Tsanuo, Keith Chamberlain, Kay Tittcomb, Julie Scholes, Ahmed Hassanali, Zeyaur R. Khan, John A. Pickett

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In East African small-holder farming of maize, the cattle forage legume, Desmodium uncinatum is used as an intercrop due to its allelopathic inhibition of parasitism by Striga hermonthica, an obligate parasitic weed that can devastate the maize crop. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the root extract of D. uncinatum revealed isoschaftoside to be the main compound in the most potent fraction inhibiting growth of germinated S. hermonthica radicles. Bioassays repeated with isoschaftoside isolated from a different plant source, Passiflora incarnata, proved it to be a biologically active component. Analysis of the root exudates produced by hydroponically grown D. uncinatum showed isoschaftoside to …

The Market For Treaties, Natasha Affolder Jun 2010

The Market For Treaties, Natasha Affolder

Chicago Journal of International Law

Corporations are consumers of treaty law. In this Article, I empirically examine three biodiversity treaty regimes-the Convention on Biological Diversity, Ramsar Convention, and World Heritage Convention-to demonstrate that corporations implement or internalize treaty norms in a variety of ways that are not captured by the dominant model of treaty implementation-national implementation. As an exegetical model, I explore how corporations use biodiversity treaties as a source of private environmental standards. I focus on the interactions between mining and oil and gas companies and biodiversity treaties, as revealed through transactional documents, corporate reports, security law filings, and treaty secretariat reports. My central …

Lawyers, Guns, And Money: The Governance Of Business Activities In Conflict Zones, Simon Chesterman Jun 2010

Lawyers, Guns, And Money: The Governance Of Business Activities In Conflict Zones, Simon Chesterman

Chicago Journal of International Law

There is a proliferation of literature discussing human rights and business, but far less that looks at the issue of businesses operating in conflict Zones and the applicability of international humanitarian law. This is understandable in terms of the prominence and dynamism of human rights as a sub-discipline, contrasted with the conservatism of international humanitarian law. But from a doctrinal perspective it is somewhat odd, as the direct applicabiIity of human rights norms to business is far less clear than the applicability of international humanitarian law. Section II of this paper describes the normative regime that is set up by …

Soulful Voices: Birds, Language And Prophecy In Amazonia, Harry Walker Jun 2010

Soulful Voices: Birds, Language And Prophecy In Amazonia, Harry Walker

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper explores the significance of human-bird interactions among Peruvian Urarina, focusing on bird speech and its relation to concepts of voice, power and prophecy. It suggests that while the potential status of birds as subjects remains complex and uncertain, this very ambiguity has stimulated the development and refinement of more abstract ideas of meaning, language, and what it means to be human. The ways in which bird sounds signify is not simply arbitrary, but rather indexical or analogic, leading to the impression of a privileged access to reality and a powerful claim to truth. Together with their vocal transparency …

Many of the world's coastal ecosystems are impacted by multiple stressors each of which may be subject to different management strategies that may have overlapping or even conflicting objectives. Consequently, management results may be indirect and difficult to predict or observe. We developed a network simulation model intended specifically to examine ecosystem-level responses to management and applied this model to a comparison of nutrient load reduction and restoration of highly reduced stocks of bivalve suspension feeders (eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica) in an estuarine ecosystem (Chesapeake Bay, USA). Model results suggest that a 50% reduction in nutrient inputs from the watershed …

Chemical Inhibition Of Caax Protease Activity Disrupts Yeast Ras Localization, Surya P. Mandahar, Emily R. Hildebrandt, William H. Jacobsen, George M. Santangelo, Walter K. Schmidt Jun 2010

Chemical Inhibition Of Caax Protease Activity Disrupts Yeast Ras Localization, Surya P. Mandahar, Emily R. Hildebrandt, William H. Jacobsen, George M. Santangelo, Walter K. Schmidt

Faculty Publications

Proteins possessing a C-terminal CaaX motif, such as the Ras GTPases, undergo extensive post-translational modification that includes attachment of an isoprenoid lipid, proteolytic processing and carboxylmethylation. Inhibition of the enzymes involved in these processes is considered a cancer-therapeutic strategy. We previously identified nine in vitro inhibitors of the yeast CaaX protease Rce1p in a chemical library screen (Manandhar et al., 2007). Here, we demonstrate that these agents disrupt the normal plasma membrane distribution of yeast GFP-Ras reporters in a manner that pharmacologically phenocopies effects observed upon genetic loss of CaaX protease function. Consistent with Rce1p being the in vivo target …

Optimization Algorithms For Site-Directed Protein Recombination Experiment Planning, Wei Zheng Jun 2010

Optimization Algorithms For Site-Directed Protein Recombination Experiment Planning, Wei Zheng

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Site-directed protein recombination produces improved and novel protein variants by recombining sequence fragments from parent proteins. The resulting hybrids accumulate multiple mutations that have been evolutionarily accepted together. Subsequent screening or selection identifies hybrids with desirable characteristics. In order to increase the "hit rate" of good variants, this thesis develops experiment planning algorithms to optimize protein recombination experiments. First, to improve the frequency of generating novel hybrids, a metric is developed to assess the diversity among hybrids and parent proteins. Dynamic programming algorithms are then created to optimize the selection of breakpoint locations according to this metric. Second, the trade-off …

Graph Algorithms For Nmr Resonance Assignment And Cross-Link Experiment Planning, Fei Xiong Jun 2010

Graph Algorithms For Nmr Resonance Assignment And Cross-Link Experiment Planning, Fei Xiong

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The study of three-dimensional protein structures produces insights into protein function at the molecular level. Graphs provide a natural representation of protein structures and associated experimental data, and enable the development of graph algorithms to analyze the structures and data. This thesis develops such graph representations and algorithms for two novel applications: structure-based NMR resonance assignment and disulfide cross-link experiment planning for protein fold determination. The first application seeks to identify correspondences between spectral peaks in NMR data and backbone atoms in a structure (from x-ray crystallography or homology modeling), by computing correspondences between a contact graph representing the structure …

I/O-Efficient Compressed Text Indexes: From Theory To Practice, Sheng Yuan Chiu, Wing Kai Hon, Rahul Shah, Jeffrey Scott Vitter Jun 2010

I/O-Efficient Compressed Text Indexes: From Theory To Practice, Sheng Yuan Chiu, Wing Kai Hon, Rahul Shah, Jeffrey Scott Vitter

Faculty Publications

Pattern matching on text data has been a fundamental field of Computer Science for nearly 40 years. Databases supporting full-text indexing functionality on text data are now widely used by biologists. In the theoretical literature, the most popular internal-memory index structures are the suffix trees and the suffix arrays, and the most popular external-memory index structure is the string B-tree. However, the practical applicability of these indexes has been limited mainly because of their space consumption and I/O issues. These structures use a lot more space (almost 20 to 50 times more) than the original text data and are often …

Development Towards A Protocol To Test For The Creation Of A “Diabetic” Environment In A Blood Vessel Mimic, Kaitlyn Kirk, Development Towards A Protocol To Test For The Creation Of A “Diabetic” Environment In A Blood Vessel Mimic

Biomedical Engineering

Diabetes mellitus affects a huge proportion of people; about 6% of the population in the US had diabetes in 2007 (16). Diabetes promotes dyslipidemia, an imbalance in the circulating levels of lipids and lipoproteins, and diabetes is one of the leading risk factors for coronary artery and peripheral vascular diseases (11, 51, 52).  There are two types of diabetes; type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10% of diagnosed cases and type 2 accounts for about 90% (11).  Diabetic patients react differently to stents and there is a great need to enhance the treatment.  The goal of this project was, and …

Environmental Variables Influencing The Severity Of Pierce's Disease In California Grapevines, Christopher James Boisseranc Jun 2010

Environmental Variables Influencing The Severity Of Pierce's Disease In California Grapevines, Christopher James Boisseranc

Master's Theses

This project was designed to correlate environmental variables with the development of Pierce’s Disease (PD), an infection caused by the gram negative bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), in grapes (Hopkins et al. 2002). PD is one of the most difficult crop pathogens to manage because it is vectored by insects and its continued presence in the vine is usually fatal. PD is influenced by the interaction of host, disease and vector, and probably many other environmental variables. The general objective was to study and identify the most important variables involved in the expression of Pierce’s Disease.

Over a two year period, …

Prostaglandin E(2) Is Crucial In The Response Of Podocytes To Fluid Flow Shear Stress., Tarak Srivastava, Ellen T. Mccarthy, Ram Sharma, Patricia A. Cudmore, Mukut Sharma, Mark L. Johnson, Lynda F. Bonewald

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Podocytes play a key role in maintaining and modulating the filtration barrier of the glomerulus. Because of their location, podocytes are exposed to mechanical strain in the form of fluid flow shear stress (FFSS). Several human diseases are characterized by glomerular hyperfiltration, such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The response of podocytes to FFSS at physiological or pathological levels is not known. We exposed cultured podocytes to FFSS, and studied changes in actin cytoskeleton, prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production and expression of cyclooxygenase-1 and-2 (COX-1, COX-2). FFSS caused a reduction in transversal F-actin stress filaments and the appearance of cortical actin …

Because of their role in mediating life-history trade-offs, hormones are expected to be strongly associated with components of fitness; however, few studies have examined how natural selection acts on hormonal variation in the wild. In a songbird, the dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis), field experiments have shown that exogenous testosterone alters individuals' resolution of the survival-reproduction trade-off, enhancing reproduction at the expense of survival. Here we used standardized injections of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to assay variation in the testosterone production of males. Using measurements of annual survival and reproduction, we found evidence of strong natural selection acting on GnRH-induced …

Capturing The Judiciary: Carhart And The Undue Burden Standard, Khiara M. Bridges Jun 2010

Capturing The Judiciary: Carhart And The Undue Burden Standard, Khiara M. Bridges

Washington and Lee Law Review

In Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey,' the Supreme Court replaced the trimester framework, first articulated nineteen years earlier in Roe v. Wade,2 with a new test for determining the constitutionality of abortion regulations-the "undue burden standard."3 The Court's 2007 decision in Gonzales v. Carhart 4 was its most recent occasion to use the undue burden standard, as the Court was called upon to ascertain the constitutionality of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, a federal statute proscribing certain methods of performing second- and third-trimester abortions.5 A majority of the Court held that the regulation was constitutionally permissible, finding that …

A Resource Based Stage-Structured Fishery Model With Selective Harvesting Of Mature Species, T. K. Kar, Swarnakamal Misra Jun 2010

A Resource Based Stage-Structured Fishery Model With Selective Harvesting Of Mature Species, T. K. Kar, Swarnakamal Misra

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we have considered a model in which revenue is generated from fishing and the growth of the fish depends upon the plankton which in turn follows a logistic law of growth. Here the fish population has two stages, a juvenile stage and a mature stage and we consider the harvesting of the mature fish species. Stability and permanence of the system are discussed. Maximum sustainable yield, maximum economic yield and optimal sustainable yield are obtained and different tax policies are discussed to achieve the reference points.

In this study, the predictors of marital satisfaction and intimacy were examined within an African context that is characterized by a fast growing economy, migrant population, urbanization and industrialization. Specifically, this study examined the role of two relational variables, gender role attitudes and spousal support and two demographic variables, age and gender in predicting the variance in marital satisfaction and intimacy, after controlling for number of children, religion, occupation, education, length of marriage and household income among married individuals in Botswana. The results of this study reveal the importance of gender role attitudes and spousal support as key predictors of …

Hypoxia And Fetal Programming Of Cardiovascular Dysfunction, Qin Xue Jun 2010

Hypoxia And Fetal Programming Of Cardiovascular Dysfunction, Qin Xue

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Human epidemiological studies have shown a clear association of adverse intrauterine environment and an increased risk of ischemic heart disease in later adult life. Of all the stresses to which the fetus is subjected, perhaps the most important and clinically relevant is that of hypoxia. The goal of this project is to test the hypothesis that chronic hypoxia during gestation adversely affects fetal cardiovascular development and impairs cardiac function in offspring. In the first part of project, we tested the hypothesis that chronic hypoxia adversely regulates contractility of fetal pulmonary arteries and veins in sheep residing at high altitude (3,801 …

Therapeutic Modalities Targeting Neuroinflammation After Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia, Nancy Fathali Jun 2010

Therapeutic Modalities Targeting Neuroinflammation After Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia, Nancy Fathali

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) occurs in 1-6/1000 live full-term births (Shankaran, 2009). Of those affected, 15-20% will die in the postnatal period, and 25% of survivors will be left with long-term neurological disabilities (Gunn, 2000; Vannucci, 1997; Fatemi, 2009). It has become increasingly clear that peripheral immune cells infiltrate the brain parenchyma as part of the physiological response to tissue damage after HI injury. The interplay between infiltrating immune cells and brain resident cells during the inflammatory response is however dynamic and complex; in that neuro-immune crosstalk, by way of specific molecular mediators, is responsible for both neurodestructive as well as neuroprotective …

Evaluating Captive-Breeding Techniques And Reintroduction Success Of The California Condor (Gymnogyps Californianus), Amy C. Utt Jun 2010

Evaluating Captive-Breeding Techniques And Reintroduction Success Of The California Condor (Gymnogyps Californianus), Amy C. Utt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this dissertation, I present two original research studies on the behavior and survival of the critically endangered California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus). I also provide a comprehensive review of the role of captive-rearing to the conservation of birds.

The first study examined the behavioral differences of puppet- and parent-reared condor juveniles reared in captivity. This study further defined and examined the behaviors of adult conspecific mentors and their interactions with juveniles. Dominance hierarchy analyses for two cohorts of juveniles and their adult mentors indicated the establishment of a linear hierarchy. Although puppet-reared juveniles engaged in fewer social behaviors in …

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and/or multiple tender points located on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms or legs that hurt when touched. FM can be a debilitating condition with financial, emotional, interpersonal, and health costs that can affect not only the person diagnosed, but his or her family and friends. Presently, the etiology of FM is largely unknown and there is no definitive cure. Researchers have identified several possible contributing factors in the development and maintenance of FM, including genetics, abnormalities in the neuroendocrine system, and sleep disturbances as well as psychiatric …

Stressors And Coping Mechanisms Of Married Female Physicians : A Qualitative Review, Eva Marie Starner Jun 2010

Stressors And Coping Mechanisms Of Married Female Physicians : A Qualitative Review, Eva Marie Starner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Female physicians live and work in a very complex world fraught with professional demands and personal challenges. Twenty-seven married female physicians were interviewed for this study to assess demands and stressors endemic to them and to determine how they manage them. The breadth of this study looked at the demands and stressors of the female physician from the perspective of her work environment, home and family responsibilities, parenting responsibilities, and self-imposed demands in her perceived roles as a working wife and mother. Two main categories emerged during the development of grounded theory: System Challenge and System Adaptation. Additionally, work demands, …
