Rhizobium leguminosarum bv trifolii is a soil-inhabiting bacterium that has the capacity to be an effective nitrogen fixing microsymbiont of a diverse range of annual Trifolium (clover) species. Strain WSM1325 is an aerobic, motile, non-spore forming, Gram-negative rod isolated from root nodules collected in 1993 from the Greek Island of Serifos. WSM1325 is produced commercially in Australia as an inoculant for a broad range of annual clovers of Mediterranean origin due to its superior attributes of saprophytic competence, nitrogen fixation and acid-tolerance. Here we describe the basic features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence, and annotation. This …

Regional Heterogeneity And Diversity Of Astrocytes In Response To Hiv-1 Proteins And Morphine, Wen Chen
Regional Heterogeneity And Diversity Of Astrocytes In Response To Hiv-1 Proteins And Morphine, Wen Chen
Theses and Dissertations
HIV-infected individuals who abuse opiates have been found to have a higher incidence and a faster progression of HIV encephalitis. Astrocytes, the major support cells in the CNS, are known to play a critical role in the HIV neuropathy. Although astrocytes tend not to be productively infected by the HIV-1 virus, dysregulation of their pro- and anti- inflammatory cytokines/chemokines secretion is usually neurotoxic. Glutamate transport in astrocytes is reported to be impaired as well, which result in extrasynaptic excitatory neurotransmitter accumulation and over stimulation of postsynaptic neurons. It is long known that astrocytes from different brain regions have diverse responses …

Expression Patterns Of Β–Catenin, Cox-2 And P27 In Colorectal Carcinomas At Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Patricia Okiro
Master of Medicine in Anatomic Pathology
Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, as indicated by WHO. Local published and unpublished data indicate that patients in the developing world with colorectal cancer tend to present at an early age, and possibly at a more advanced stage than described in the developed world. The reason for this difference is unclear, and as yet undefined. The Wnt/APC pathway, Microsatellite instability pathway and the Epigenetic pathway are three pathogenetically distinct pathways that have been implicated in the development of colorectal cancer. Exploration of these patterns may allow us to elucidate possible reasons for these differences. Objectives: …

An Inferential Framework For Network Hypothesis Tests: With Applications To Biological Networks, Phillip Yates
An Inferential Framework For Network Hypothesis Tests: With Applications To Biological Networks, Phillip Yates
Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of weighted co-expression gene sets is gaining momentum in systems biology. In addition to substantial research directed toward inferring co-expression networks on the basis of microarray/high-throughput sequencing data, inferential methods are being developed to compare gene networks across one or more phenotypes. Common gene set hypothesis testing procedures are mostly confined to comparing average gene/node transcription levels between one or more groups and make limited use of additional network features, e.g., edges induced by significant partial correlations. Ignoring the gene set architecture disregards relevant network topological comparisons and can result in familiar n<

The availability of high density genetic maps and genotyping platforms has transformed human genetic studies. The use of these platforms has enabled population-based genome-wide association studies. However, in inheritance-based studies, current methods do not take full advantage of the information present in such genotyping analyses. In this paper we describe an improved method for identifying genetic regions shared identical-by-descent (IBD) from recent common ancestors. This method improves existing methods by taking advantage of phase information even if it is less than fully accurate or missing. We present an analysis of how using phase information increases the accuracy of IBD detection …

Wto Jurisprudence & Its Critiques: The Appellate Body's Anti-Constitutional Resistance, William Magnuson
Wto Jurisprudence & Its Critiques: The Appellate Body's Anti-Constitutional Resistance, William Magnuson
Faculty Scholarship
In a time of financial crisis and rising demand for economic protectionism, the World Trade Organization, promoting free trade and economic growth, has never been more important. Enforcement of the WTO’s provisions has grown increasingly contentious and high-stakes, and the Appellate Body empowered to rule on violations of the treaty has received harsh criticism. Three elements of WTO jurisprudence, in particular, stand out. First, the court’s excessive use of narrow textualist argument tends to lead to short-sighted decisions that give little guidance to member states. Second, the court’s decisions have increasingly interfered with sensitive democratic processes in sovereign countries. Third, …

Modified Information Criteria For Selecting A Finite Mixture Model, Safa K. Kadhem, Hajem A. Daham
Modified Information Criteria For Selecting A Finite Mixture Model, Safa K. Kadhem, Hajem A. Daham
Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences
Recently, a paper published by Celeux et al. (2006) presented several forms for the deviation information criterion (DIC) for mixture models, each version is depended on the kind of probability function. However, no reliable version was adopted for those models. As an idea inspired by Brooks (2002, p. 617), we develop, in this paper, Bayesian deviations plugging into two known criteria: the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for choosing best mix model. Due to unavailability the closed-form of the perceived likelihood of those models, we propose an algorithm for estimating the observed likelihood for mixture models …
Mechanistic Studies On The Electrochemistry Of Proton Coupled Electron Transfer And The Influence Of Hydrogen Bonding, Timothy Alligrant
Mechanistic Studies On The Electrochemistry Of Proton Coupled Electron Transfer And The Influence Of Hydrogen Bonding, Timothy Alligrant
Theses and Dissertations
This research has investigated proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of quinone/hydroquinone and other simple organic PCET species for the purpose of furthering the knowledge of the thermodynamic and kinetic effects due to reduction and oxidation of such systems. Each of these systems were studied involving the addition of various acid/base chemistries to influence the thermodynamics and kinetics upon electron transfer. It is the expectation that the advancement of the knowledge of acid/base catalysis in electrochemistry gleaned from these studies might be applied in fuel cell research, chemical synthesis, the study of enzymes within biological systems or to simply advance the knowledge …

Rapid Multi-Class Multi-Residue Method For The Confirmation Of Chloramphenicol And Eleven Nitroimidazoles In Milk And Honey By Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Mark Cronly, Patrice Behan, Barry Foley, Liam Regan, Sheila Martin, Michael Doyle, Edward Malone
Articles
A confirmatory method has been developed to allow for the analysis of eleven nitroimidazoles and also chloramphenicol in milk and honey samples. These compounds are classified as A6 compounds in annex IV of council regulation 2377/90 and therefore prohibited for the use in animal husbandry. Milk samples are extracted by acetonitrile with addition of NaCl, while honey samples are first dissolved in water before a similar extraction. Honey extracts undergo a hexane wash to remove impurities. Both milk and honey extracts are evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in initial mobile phase. These are then injected onto an LC-MS/MS system and …
Chemopreventive Effects Of Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In A Mouse Model Of Prostate Cancer, Trevor Elisha Quiner
Chemopreventive Effects Of Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In A Mouse Model Of Prostate Cancer, Trevor Elisha Quiner
Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Prostate cancer, like many cancers, is a disease that generally requires a long period of time to develop and grow before it becomes detectable. This long period of latency makes prostate cancer a candidate for dietary chemoprevention. Soy and selenium (Se), are associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer. We previously showed that high dietary intake of selenium (Se) and soy isoflavones decreased the expression of the androgen receptor (AR) and AR-regulated genes in the prostates …
Liver Kinase B1/Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling In The Diaphragm, Jacob D. Brown
Liver Kinase B1/Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling In The Diaphragm, Jacob D. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The Liver Kinase B1 (LKB1)/AMP-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway is a major regulator of skeletal muscle metabolic processes. During exercise, LKB1-mediated phosphorylation of AMPK leads to its activation, promoting mitochondrial biogenesis and glucose transport, among other effects. The roles of LKB1 and AMPK have not been fully characterized in the diaphragm. Two methods of AMPK activation were used to characterize LKB1/AMPK signaling in diaphragms from muscle-specific LKB1 knockout (KO) and littermate control (C) mice: (1) acute injection of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside (AICAR) and (2) 5-min direct electrical stimulation (ES) of the diaphragm. Diaphragms were excised 60 minutes post-AICAR injection and …

Volume Phase Transitions In Surface-Tethered, Photo-Cross-Linked Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Networks, Ajay Kumar Vidyasagar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The overall thrust of this dissertation is to gain a comprehensive understanding over the factors that govern the performance and behavior of ultra-thin, cross-linked polymer films. Poly(NIPAAm) was used as a model polymer to study volume phase transition in surface tethered networks.
Poly(NIPAAm) undergoes a reversible phase transition at approximately 32°C between a swollen hydrophilic random coil to a collapsed hydrophobic globule state, thought to be caused by increased hydrophobic attractions between the isopropyl groups at elevated temperatures. We present a simple photochemical technique for fabricating structured polymer networks, enabling the construction of responsive surfaces with unique properties. The approach …

In the past 5 years, almost 100,000 children have been internationally adopted. Research suggests that many of these children have growth and developmental delays, but few large scale studies have been completed. In the current study data obtained from a restrospective chart review of 534 children followed in the International Adoption Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center between 1999 and 2007 was analyzed. Prevalence of developmental delays and sensory processing issues initially and after 6 months in country, the relationship of delays/issues with previously identified risk factors, and the frequency of recommendations for early intervention (EI) and therapy services …
The Relationship Between Fam5c Snp (Rs10920501) Variability, Metabolic Syndrome, And Inflammation, In Women With Coronary Heart Disease, Jennifer L. Cline
The Relationship Between Fam5c Snp (Rs10920501) Variability, Metabolic Syndrome, And Inflammation, In Women With Coronary Heart Disease, Jennifer L. Cline
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The leading cause of death among women is coronary heart disease (CHD), a multifactorial disease with polygenic heritability estimated at 50%. Polymorphisms in the family with sequence similarity 5, member C' (FAM5C) gene have been associated with myocardial infarction (MI), and one single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) has partially accounted for linkage in an acute coronary syndrome subset. The linkage peak on FAM5C corresponds directly with a quantitative trait locus for the inflammatory biomarker monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, as well as a linkage peak to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of developing CHD, and MI has been …
Maintaining Biodiversity With A Mosaic Of Wetlands: Factors Affecting Amphibian Species Richness Among Small Isolated Wetlands In Central Florida., Jackie Guzy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The biodiversity value of a wetland is linked not only to its position in the landscape relative to other wetlands, but also to its habitat characteristics. I monitored amphibian species richness among 12 small, isolated, and undisturbed wetlands (which occur on lands permitted for phosphate mining) in central Florida during the 2005 and 2006 breeding seasons. I used seven habitat and landscape variables to characterize the environments of the wetlands and generalized linear models to determine which of these variables had the greatest influence on the occurrence of seven amphibian species (Anaxyrus terrestris, Gastrophryne carolinensis, Hyla gratiosa …

Gold Nanoparticles And Their Polymer Composites: Synthesis Characterization And Applications, Nidhi Joshi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanoparticles are excellent candidates for all the biomedical applications due to their size and shape dependent optical and physiological properties. In this study, gold nanoparticles were synthesized chemically for bio-application. It was observed that the size and shape of gold nanoparticles depend strongly on the concentration of chemical solution, type of reducing agent used in the reaction, temperature of the solution and stabilizing agent for reaction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used extensively to determine the size and shape of the gold nanoparticles. Optical properties of the size and shape selected nanoparticles were studied using UV-vis spectrophotometer in …

Overweight And Obesity In Girls And Their Relationship To Orthostatic Abnormalities (Lateral Deviation Of The Spine), Samia Khalil Mohammed, Fatima Hashoush, Israa Jameel Al-Saadi
Modern Sport
Excess weight and obesity, or an increase in body fat beyond normal levels, represent a serious health issue. The persistent pressure caused by overweight can lead to postural deformities, including muscular imbalance, uneven fat distribution, and a loss of balance and agility. Such conditions often result in injuries, including flattening of the feet (pes planus) and lateral curvature of the spine (scoliosis). These physical imbalances, especially in young females, can significantly impair motor performance and increase the risk of chronic musculoskeletal problems. The physiological and hormonal makeup of females makes them more susceptible to weight gain and obesity, particularly during …
