Coastal And Marine Resource Condition Monitoring – Scoping Project: Final Nrm Report – Project 073007, Brett A. Human Jul 2010

Coastal And Marine Resource Condition Monitoring – Scoping Project: Final Nrm Report – Project 073007, Brett A. Human

Fisheries Research Reports

The marine and coastal environment of the Pilbara and Kimberley region in north-western Western Australia contains many assets, including remote and near pristine habitats, unique habitats within Australia, unique fauna and flora; as well as assets of value to commercial and industrial ventures; and for recreational human usage. However, there is a lack of monitoring in the Pilbara and Kimberley marine and coastal environments. This is in large part due to the remoteness of the area, making access difficult, and consequently making monitoring programs expensive to run in the region.

Unidentified Allies: Intersections Of Feminist And Transpersonal Thought And Potential Contributions To Social Change, Christine Brooks Jul 2010

Unidentified Allies: Intersections Of Feminist And Transpersonal Thought And Potential Contributions To Social Change, Christine Brooks

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Contemporary Western feminism and transpersonalism are kaleidoscopic, consisting of

interlocking influences, yet the fields have developed in parallel rather than in tandem.

Both schools of praxis developed during the climate of activism and social experimentation

of the 1960s in the United States, and both share a non-pathological view of the human

experience. This discussion suggests loci of synthesized theoretical constructs between the

two disciplines as well as distinct concepts and practices in both disciplines that may serve

the other. Ways in which a feminist-transpersonal perspective may catalyze social change on

personal, regional, and global levels are proposed.

Mothering Fundamentalism: The Transformation Of Modern Women Into Fundamentalists, Sophia Korb Jul 2010

Mothering Fundamentalism: The Transformation Of Modern Women Into Fundamentalists, Sophia Korb

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Despite upbringings influenced by modern feminism, many women choose to identify

with new communities in the modern religious revivalist movement in the United States

who claim to represent and embrace the patriarchal values against which their mothers

and grandmothers fought. Because women’s mothering is determinative to the family, it is

therefore central to transforming larger social structures. This literature review is taken from

a study which employed a qualitative design incorporating thematic analysis of interviews

to explore how women’s attitudes about being a mother and mothering change when they

change religious communities from liberal paradigms to fundamentalist, enclavist belief

systems. …

A Bycatch Action Plan For The Pilbara Fish Trawl Interim Managed Fishery., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

The effect of commercial fishing on bycatch species and the marine ecosystem generally, has emerged as a significant national and international issue. Environmental issues associated with bycatch – including impacts on the ecology of non-target species of fish and wildlife – are important issues to address in reducing the impacts, or potential impacts, of commercial fisheries.

In 1998, the National Standing Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture developed a national policy on fisheries bycatch. In 1999, the (then) State Minister for Fisheries adopted the national policy as his position on bycatch for Western Australia. The main objective of the policy is …

Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) is an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of how fish resources in Western Australia can be best shared between competing users within the broad context of ‘Ecologically Sustainable Development’ (ESD) so that they can be managed on a sustainable basis.

A Chakra System Model Of Lifespan Development, Candis K. Best Jul 2010

A Chakra System Model Of Lifespan Development, Candis K. Best

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article presents a model of lifespan development based upon the tantric chakra system.

It begins with a survey of the evolution of transpersonal psychology and its alignment with

eastern philosophies as previously espoused by William James, Carl Jung and others. The

chakras are defined in relation to their potential influence on psychological functioning with

a focus on development beyond the level of ego stability and functioning. Building upon

prior work integrating the chakra system with developmental processes, this article presents

an interpretation of the chakras as a model that defines a pathway for growth-oriented

development.

Psychospiritual Development Of Female Adoptees Raised Within A Closed Adoption System: A Theoretical Model Within A Feminist And Jungian Perspective, April E. Topfer Jul 2010

Psychospiritual Development Of Female Adoptees Raised Within A Closed Adoption System: A Theoretical Model Within A Feminist And Jungian Perspective, April E. Topfer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article proposes a transpersonal theoretical model suggesting that the embodiment of

the voice of the feminine is a significant catalyst for awakening the psychological and spiritual

growth and development of female adoptees. Existing Jungian and feminist theoretical

models regarding the psychological and spiritual implications for a female adoptee raised

within a closed adoption system will be discussed. The author will share her adopted voice

about her spiritual and psychological process toward finding wholeness using a hermeneutical

process of inquiry. The voices of birth mothers who relinquished their children will also be

included. Voice is then explored to be an …

Non-Traditional Lightweight Polypropylene Composites Reinforced With Milkweed Floss, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Jul 2010

Non-Traditional Lightweight Polypropylene Composites Reinforced With Milkweed Floss, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Lightweight composites are preferred for automotive applications due to the weight restrictions and also due to the presence of inherent voids that can enhance the sound absorption of these composites. The density of the reinforcing materials plays a crucial role in such lightweight composites. Milkweed is a unique natural cellulose fiber that has a completely hollow center and low density (0.9 g cm−3) unlike any other natural cellulose fiber. The low density of milkweed fibers will allow the incorporation of higher amounts of fiber per unit weight of a composite, which is expected to lead to lightweight composites with better …

Attitudes And Beliefs Of Marriage And Family Therapists Regarding Psychotropic Drugs And Therapy, Paul R. Springer, Steven M. Harris

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Clinical members of AAMFT were solicited by means of a randomized multi-staged clustering technique to identify their attitudes and beliefs regarding psychotropic drugs. All participants were blind to the overall purpose of the study (n = 322) and were directed to read a clinical vignette and then identify what course of action they would take with the client. They were then asked to complete a small questionnaire regarding their attitudes and beliefs regarding psychotropic drugs. Results of the study showed that 35.7% of the clinicians identified medication and a medication referral as a viable treatment option they might pursue with …

Deep-Pelagic (0-3000 M) Fish Assemblage Structure Over The Mid-Atlantic Ridge Relative To The North Atlantic Subpolar Front, April B. Cook, Tracey Sutton, John K. Galbraith, M. Vecchione

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Only a tiny fraction of the world's largest volume of living space, the ocean's mid-water region, has ever been sampled. It is one of the least understood areas on earth, so as part of the International Census of Marine Life field project, MAR-ECO, a discrete-depth trawling survey was conducted in 2009 aboard the NOAA ship Henry Bigelow to examine pelagic assemblage structure and distribution over the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ) of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The survey consisted of 11 stations divided into two transects, one northwest and one southeast of the CGFZ, which roughly coincides with the Subpolar Front. …

What About Know-How: Heightened Obviousness And Lowered Disclosure Is Not A Panacea To The American Patent System For Biotechnology Medication And Pharmaceutical Inventions In The Post-Ksr Era, Yi-Chen Su Jul 2010

What About Know-How: Heightened Obviousness And Lowered Disclosure Is Not A Panacea To The American Patent System For Biotechnology Medication And Pharmaceutical Inventions In The Post-Ksr Era, Yi-Chen Su

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

In KSR International Co. v. Teleflex, Inc., the Supreme Court rejected the Federal Circuit's rigid application of the teaching, suggestion, or motivation test (TSM test), and replaced it with an expansive and flexible approach, in determining the question of obviousness. Nevertheless, an expansive and flexible approach to obviousness may not be consistent with the international norms of practice if it is applied literally. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's literal application of the decision has essentially created another set of inflexible rules, which is contrary to the Supreme Court's intent. The Federal Circuit's recent decision in In re Kubin cautiously …

Evolution Of Host Associations In Symbiotic Zoanthidea, Timothy D. Swain Jul 2010

Evolution Of Host Associations In Symbiotic Zoanthidea, Timothy D. Swain

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

Symbioses are pervasive in life and confer novel adaptive capabilities that enable ecological expansion into unexplored niches. Evolutionary transitions in symbiosis (terminations, origins, host shifts, or changes in relationship outcomes) can therefore have dramatic effects on the fitness, life history, and distribution of organisms. Because symbiotic interactions require coordination among traits that control recognition, colonization, and maintenance of symbiosis, transitions in symbiosis should generally be rare and conserved across evolutionary time. Cnidarians in the order Zoanthidea (class Anthozoa) are symbionts of taxa representing at least five invertebrate phyla and occur in most major benthic habitats from the intertidal to the …

Prolongation Of Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation In Human Colonic Epithelial Cells By Activation Of An Nfκb-Bcl10 Loop, Alip Borthakur, Sumit Bhattacharyya, Arivarasu N. Anbazhagan, Anoop Kumar, Pradeep K. Dudeja, Joanne K. Tobacman Jul 2010

Prolongation Of Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation In Human Colonic Epithelial Cells By Activation Of An Nfκb-Bcl10 Loop, Alip Borthakur, Sumit Bhattacharyya, Arivarasu N. Anbazhagan, Anoop Kumar, Pradeep K. Dudeja, Joanne K. Tobacman

Clinical & Translational Sciences

Carrageenan, a sulfated polysaccharide that is widely used as a food additive, induces inflammatory responses in animal models and human cells. The carrageenan-induced inflammatory cascades involve tolllike receptor (TLR)4- and B-cell leukemia/lymphoma (BCL)10-dependent activation of NF-κB, leading to increased IL-8 production. Translocations involving BCL10 in the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are associated with constitutive activation of NF-κB. This report presents a mechanism by which carrageenan exposure leads to prolonged activation of both BCL10 and NF-κB in human colonic epithelial cells. Study findings demonstrate that nuclear RelA and RelB bind to an NF-κB binding motif in the BCL10 promoter in …

Deficits In Attention To Emotional Stimuli Distinguish Youth With Severe Mood Dysregulation From Youth With Bipolar Disorder., Brendan A Rich, Melissa A Brotman, Daniel P Dickstein, Derek G V Mitchell, R James R Blair, Ellen Leibenluft

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Studying attention in the context of emotional stimuli may aid in differentiating pediatric bipolar disorder (BD) from severe mood dysregulation (SMD). SMD is characterized by chronic irritability, arousal, and hyper-reactivity; SMD youth frequently receive a BD diagnosis although they do not meet DSM-IV criteria for BD because they lack manic episodes. We compared 57 BD (14.4 +/- 2.9 years old, 56% male), 41 SMD (12.6 +/- 2.6 years old, 66% male), and 33 control subjects (13.7 +/- 2.5 years old, 52% male) using the Emotional Interrupt task, which examines how attention is impacted by positive, negative, or neutral distracters. We …

Elevated Levels Of Il-10 And G-Csf Associated With Asymptomatic Malaria In Pregnant Women, Winston Anderson

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 30 million pregnant women are at risk of contracting malaria annually. Nearly 36% of healthy pregnant women receiving routine antenatal care tested positive for Plasmodium falciparum HRP-II antigen in Ghana. We tested the hypothesis that asymptomatic HRP II positive pregnant women expressed a unique Th1 and Th2 phenotype that differs from healthy controls. Plasma from healthy (n = 15) and asymptomatic (n = 25) pregnant women were evaluated for 27 biomarkers (IL-1b, IL-1ra, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-9, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-15, IL- 17, Eotaxin, bFGF-2, G-CSF, GM-CSF, IFN-gamma, IP-10, MCP-1, MIP-1alpha, MIP-1beta, PDGF-bb, …

Mitochondrial Katp Channel Inhibition Blunts Arrhythmia Protection In Ischemic Exercised Hearts, John C. Quindry, Lindsey Schreiber, Peter Hosick, Jenna Wrieden, J. Megan Irwin, Emily Hoyt Jul 2010

Mitochondrial Katp Channel Inhibition Blunts Arrhythmia Protection In Ischemic Exercised Hearts, John C. Quindry, Lindsey Schreiber, Peter Hosick, Jenna Wrieden, J. Megan Irwin, Emily Hoyt

Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works

The mechanisms responsible for anti-arrhythmic protection during ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in exercised hearts are not fully understood. The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether the ATP-sensitive potassium channels in the mitochondria (mito KATP) and sarcolemma (sarc K ATP) provide anti-arrhythmic protection in exercised hearts during IR. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to cardioprotective treadmill exercise or sedentary conditions before IR (I = 20 min, R = 30 min) in vivo. Subsets of exercised animals received pharmacological inhibitors for mito KATP (5-hydroxydecanoate) or sarc KATP (HMR1098) before IR. Blinded analysis of digital ECG tracings revealed that mito KATP inhibition …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Latency Phase Hiv-1 Dynamics, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin Jul 2010

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Latency Phase Hiv-1 Dynamics, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

In this paper, the patho-physiological dynamics of HIV-1 induced AIDS is analyzed using a system of deterministic ordinary differential equations. The mathematical model exhibits explicitly the dynamics of the HIV-1 virions during latency phase in the absence of anti-viral therapy. The model presented in this paper is a generalization of previous models of HIV-1 dynamics and incorporates the interactions between the HIV-1 virions, infected helper T-Iymphocytes. uninfected helper r-Iymphocytes, and cytotoxic T-Iymphocytes, as well as contributions to HIV-1 reservoirs. investigative computer simulations using clinically plausible parametric configurations are presented. Clinically relevant criteria are derived depicting the annihilation, control, or persistence …

Pairing Educational Robotics With Geospatial Technologies In Informal Learning Environments, Bradley Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk Jul 2010

Pairing Educational Robotics With Geospatial Technologies In Informal Learning Environments, Bradley Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

Educational robotics, when paired with geospatial technologies and taught in an informal educational environment, can be an innovative strategy to teach youth about science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) concepts. However, little is known about the true effects on conceptual knowledge and associated attitudes. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the shortterm effects of a series of five-day summer robotics/geospatial camps held in Nebraska. The study was conducted at six diverse locations and consisted of a five-day 4-H camp experience. The study examined the experiences of 147 youth between the ages of 10 and 15. A pretestposttest quasi-experimental design …
