Beyond Employment And Income: The Association Between Young Adults’ Finances And Marital Timing, Jeffrey P. Dew, Joseph Price Jul 2010

Beyond Employment And Income: The Association Between Young Adults’ Finances And Marital Timing, Jeffrey P. Dew, Joseph Price

Faculty Publications

This study tested an extension of the theory of marital timing (Oppenheimer, Am J Sociol 94:563–591, 1988) by assessing whether visible and less visible financial assets and debt mediated the relationship between employment and the likelihood of marriage. We conducted these prospective, longitudinal analyses using a sample of 1,522 never-married young adults from the National Survey of Families and Households. For participants who were not cohabiting at Wave 1, financial issues such as car values predicted marriage but did not mediate the relationship between work hours, occupational prestige, and the likelihood of marriage. For cohabiting participants, employment factors were the …

Agricultural Development In India Since Independence: A Study On Progress, Performance, And Determinants, Amarnath Tripathi, A. R. Prasad Jul 2010

Agricultural Development In India Since Independence: A Study On Progress, Performance, And Determinants, Amarnath Tripathi, A. R. Prasad

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This paper evaluates performance and progress of Indian Agriculture since Independence. In addition, this paper also analyzes sources of agricultural growth and determinants of agricultural production. We use the decomposition test to analyze sources of agricultural growth and the production function approach to analyze determinants of agricultural production over the period 1950/51 through 2005/06. The study indicates that there is scope to increase both net sown area and gross sown area. The decomposition analysis indicates that rising output per hectare is the predominant source of agricultural growth for most of the crops and crop groups. The estimation of aggregate agricultural …

Fluorescence Molecular Tomography: A New Volume Reconstruction Method, Stephen Joseph Shamp Jul 2010

Fluorescence Molecular Tomography: A New Volume Reconstruction Method, Stephen Joseph Shamp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Medical imaging is critical for the detection and diagnosis of disease, guided biopsies, assessment of therapies, and administration of treatment. While computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and ultra-sound (US) are the more familiar modalities, interest in yet other modalities continues to grow. Among the motivations are reduction of cost, avoidance of ionizing radiation, and the search for new information, including biochemical and molecular processes. Fluorescence Molecular Tomography (FMT) is one such emerging technique and, like other techniques, has its advantages and limitations. FMT can reconstruct the distribution of fluorescent molecules in vivo using near-infrared …

Pcif1 Modulates Pdx1 Protein Stability And Pancreatic Β Cell Function And Survival In Mice, Kathryn C. Claiborn, Mira M. Sachdeva, Corey E. Cannon, David N. Groff, Jeffrey D. Singer, Doris A. Stoffers Jul 2010

Pcif1 Modulates Pdx1 Protein Stability And Pancreatic Β Cell Function And Survival In Mice, Kathryn C. Claiborn, Mira M. Sachdeva, Corey E. Cannon, David N. Groff, Jeffrey D. Singer, Doris A. Stoffers

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The homeodomain transcription factor pancreatic duodenal homeobox 1 (Pdx1) is a major mediator of insulin transcription and a key regulator of the β cell phenotype. Heterozygous mutations in PDX1 are associated with the development of diabetes in humans. Understanding how Pdx1 expression levels are controlled is therefore of intense interest in the study and treatment of diabetes. Pdx1 C terminus–interacting factor-1 (Pcif1, also known as SPOP) is a nuclear protein that inhibits Pdx1 transactivation. Here, we show that Pcif1 targets Pdx1 for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Silencing of Pcif1 increased Pdx1 protein levels in cultured mouse β cells, and Pcif1 …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Subterranean Wetlands In Western Australia, Stefan Eberhard Jul 2010

Impacts Of Climate Change On Subterranean Wetlands In Western Australia, Stefan Eberhard

KIP Abstracts

West Australian groundwater supports diverse faunas (stygofauna) that include many obligate groundwater-dependent species (stygobites), often belonging to relictual lineages, and which are typically short range endemics. These characteristics make stygofauna vulnerable to habitat changes, particularly reduced water quantity, which is a key stressor linked with climate change. In southwest Western Australia, a drying climate trend experienced over the past three decades has contributed to declining groundwater levels in the limestone caves at Yanchep and the Leeuwin-Naturaliste region. Groundwater pools and streams in these caves are habitat for assemblages of stygofauna associated with tree roots which grow in the cave pools …

Avirulent Uracil Auxotrophs Based On Disruption Of Orotidine-5′-Monophosphate Decarboxylase Elicit Protective Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik Jul 2010

Avirulent Uracil Auxotrophs Based On Disruption Of Orotidine-5′-Monophosphate Decarboxylase Elicit Protective Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik

Dartmouth Scholarship

The orotidine-5'-monophosphate decarboxylase (OMPDC) gene, encoding the final enzyme of the de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway, was deleted using Toxoplasma gondii KU80 knockouts to develop an avirulent nonreverting pyrimidine auxotroph strain. Additionally, to functionally address the role of the pyrimidine salvage pathway, the uridine phosphorylase (UP) salvage activity was knocked out and a double knockout of UP and OMPDC was also constructed. The nonreverting DeltaOMPDC, DeltaUP, and DeltaOMPDC DeltaUP knockout strains were evaluated for pyrimidine auxotrophy, for attenuation of virulence, and for their ability to elicit potent immunity to reinfection. The DeltaUP knockout strain was replication competent and virulent. In …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background— Recognition of biological patterns holds promise for improved identification of patients at risk for myocardial infarction (MI) and death. We hypothesized that identifying high- and low-risk patterns from a broad spectrum of hematologic phenotypic data related to leukocyte peroxidase-, erythrocyte- and platelet-related parameters may better predict future cardiovascular risk in stable cardiac patients than traditional risk factors alone. Methods and Results— Stable patients (n=7369) undergoing elective cardiac evaluation at a tertiary care center were enrolled. A model (PEROX) that predicts incident 1-year death and MI was derived from standard clinical data combined with information captured by a high-throughput peroxidase-based …

Interaction Of A Single-Cycle Laser Pulse With A Bound Electron Without Ionization, Ufuk Parall, Dennis R. Alexander Jul 2010

Interaction Of A Single-Cycle Laser Pulse With A Bound Electron Without Ionization, Ufuk Parall, Dennis R. Alexander

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, interaction of an ultrashort single-cycle pulse (USCP) with a bound electron without ionization is reported for the first time. For a more realistic mathematical description of USCPs, Hermitian polynomials and combination of Laguerre functions are used for two different single cycle excitation cases. These single cycle pulse models are used as driving functions for the classical approach to model the interaction of a bound electron with an applied electric field. A new novel time-domain technique was developed for modifying the classical Lorentz damped oscillator model in order to make it compatible with USCP excitation. This modification turned …

A Kinesin Motor In A Force-Producing Conformation, Elisabeth Heuston, C. Eric Bronner, F Jon Kull, Sharyn A. Endow Jul 2010

A Kinesin Motor In A Force-Producing Conformation, Elisabeth Heuston, C. Eric Bronner, F Jon Kull, Sharyn A. Endow

Dartmouth Scholarship

Kinesin motors hydrolyze ATP to produce force and move along microtubules, converting chemical energy into work by a mechanism that is only poorly understood. Key transitions and intermediate states in the process are still structurally uncharacterized, and remain outstanding questions in the field. Perturbing the motor by introducing point mutations could stabilize transitional or unstable states, providing critical information about these rarer states.

Application Of A Bayesian Inference Method To Reconstruct Short-Range Atmospheric Dispersion Events, Inanc Senocak Jul 2010

Application Of A Bayesian Inference Method To Reconstruct Short-Range Atmospheric Dispersion Events, Inanc Senocak

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the event of an accidental or intentional release of chemical or biological (CB) agents into the atmosphere, first responders and decision makers need to rapidly locate and characterize the source of dispersion events using limited information from sensor networks. In this study the stochastic event reconstruction tool (SERT) is applied to a subset of the Fusing Sensor Information from Observing Networks (FUSION) Field Trial 2007 (FFT 07) database. The inference in SERT is based on Bayesian inference with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. SERT adopts a probability model that takes into account both positive and zero-reading sensors. Activated Rhoa Binds To The Pleckstrin Homology (Ph) Domain Of Pdz-Rhogef, A Potential Site For Autoregulation, Zhe Chen, Frank Medina, Mu-Ya Liu, Celestine Thomas, Stephen R. Sprang, Paul C. Sternweis Jul 2010

Activated Rhoa Binds To The Pleckstrin Homology (Ph) Domain Of Pdz-Rhogef, A Potential Site For Autoregulation, Zhe Chen, Frank Medina, Mu-Ya Liu, Celestine Thomas, Stephen R. Sprang, Paul C. Sternweis

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) catalyze exchange of GDP for GTP by stabilizing the nucleotide-free state of the small GTPases through their Dbl homology/pleckstrin homology (DH.PH) domains. Unconventionally, PDZ-RhoGEF (PRG), a member of the RGS-RhoGEFs, binds tightly to both nucleotide-free and activated RhoA (RhoA.GTP). We have characterized the interaction between PRG and activated RhoA and determined the structure of the PRG-DH.PH-RhoA.GTPgammaS (guanosine 5'-O-[gamma-thio]triphosphate) complex. The interface bears striking similarity to a GTPase-effector interface and involves the switch regions in RhoA and a hydrophobic patch in PRG-PH that is conserved among all Lbc RhoGEFs. The two surfaces that bind activated and …

The Relationship Of Equal Division Of Labor And Satisfaction Of Division Of Labor To Positive Parenting As Mediated By Parents' Relationship Quality, Lauren Alyssa Bone Barnes Jul 2010

The Relationship Of Equal Division Of Labor And Satisfaction Of Division Of Labor To Positive Parenting As Mediated By Parents' Relationship Quality, Lauren Alyssa Bone Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

Couples learn to negotiate a complex intersection between household labor and family processes. Using both observational coding and questionnaire self report, this study examined the relationship between father and mothers' reported equality with their division-of-labor, their satisfaction with division-of-labor and their respective positive parenting as observed in taped interaction with a target child while controlling for quality of the relationship between the parents. Findings showed that egalitarian division of labor was positively related to satisfaction in division of labor and that egalitarian division of labor was a significant predictor of mothers' relationship quality, but not fathers' relationship quality. It also …

Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore Jul 2010

Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore

Theses and Dissertations

Factors that stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle include AMPK, calcium, and circulating FFAs. Chronic treatment with either AICAR, a chemical activator of AMPK, or increasing circulating FFAs with a high fat diet increases mitochondria in rat skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the combination of chronic chemical activation of AMPK and high fat feeding would have an additive effect on skeletal muscle mitochondria levels. We treated Wistar male rats with a high fat diet (HF), AICAR injections (AICAR), or a high fat diet and AICAR injections (HF+AICAR) for six weeks. At the end of …

Assessing Traditional Morphology- And Chemistry-Based Species Circumspections In Lichenized Ascomycetes: Character Evolution And Molecular Species Delimitation In Common Western North American Lichens, Steven Leavitt Jul 2010

Assessing Traditional Morphology- And Chemistry-Based Species Circumspections In Lichenized Ascomycetes: Character Evolution And Molecular Species Delimitation In Common Western North American Lichens, Steven Leavitt

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate species delimitation has critical implications for ecological and conservation studies; and for understanding factors driving diversification. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that morphology-based species circumspection in lichenized ascomycetes often fails to accurately represent the number of fungal species. The use of molecular data in lichen systematics provides an important alternative to traditional morphological characters for identifying natural groups and assessing evolutionary histories in challenging lichen taxa. In this work, I examined two common lichen-forming genera in western North America, Rhizoplaca and Xanthoparmelia, as models for investigating character evolution, species delimitation in morphologically and chemically diverse species, …

School-Based Mental Health Services: A National Survey Of School Psychologists’ Practices And Perceptions, Allison Friedrich Jul 2010

School-Based Mental Health Services: A National Survey Of School Psychologists’ Practices And Perceptions, Allison Friedrich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the current role of school psychologists in the provision of school-based mental health services, including factors that relate to their provision of such services, by surveying a national sample of practicing school psychologists. Despite an extensive knowledge base regarding which professional services school psychologists provide in general, few studies have focused exclusively on specific modalities of mental health services. Previous lines of research also have not fully identified why school psychologists do not spend as much of their professional time in the provision of mental health services as they would desire. Therefore, a central purpose of this …

The Novel Use Of Recombinant Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (Gm-Csf) To Reverse Cerebral Amyloidosis And Cognitive Impairment In Alzheimer’S Disease Mouse Models: Insights From The Investigation Of Rheumatoid Arthritis As A Negative Risk Factor For Alzheimer’S Disease, Timothy David Boyd

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For many years, it has been known that Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a negative risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It has been commonly assumed that RA patients’ usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have helped prevent the onset and progression of AD pathogenesis. Furthermore, experiments in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease have looked to inhibit inflammation, and have demonstrated some efficacy against AD-like pathology in these models. Thus many NSAID clinical trials have been performed over the years, but all have proven unsuccessful in AD patients. This suggests that intrinsic factors within RA pathogenesis itself may …

Anti-Depressive And Anti-Obesity Changes Following Either Dietary Isoflavone Treatment Or Injection Treatment With The Isoflavonoid Equol: Positive Response Dependent On Animal Age And Ovarian Status In Female Long Evans Rats, Crystal Blake Jul 2010

Anti-Depressive And Anti-Obesity Changes Following Either Dietary Isoflavone Treatment Or Injection Treatment With The Isoflavonoid Equol: Positive Response Dependent On Animal Age And Ovarian Status In Female Long Evans Rats, Crystal Blake

Theses and Dissertations

Two conditions associated with ovarian depletion are increased potential for depressive episodes and increased abdominal weight gain. In five different experiments we examined the effect of soy-containing diets or equol injections on depression, serotonin levels, weight gain (BW) and white adipose tissue (WAT) deposition of female Long-Evans rats in various stages of life. Rats were intact, ovariectomized or experienced natural ovarian failure (NOF). While this paper will present each experiment, only experiment 5 is outlined here due to space limitations. From conception the rats were exposed to either a soy-rich (Phyto-600) or low-soy diet (Phyto-low). Animals experienced NOF at approximately …

Landscape-Scale And Macrohabitat-Scale Variation In Growth And Survival Of Young June Sucker (Chasmistes Liorus) In Utah Lake, Joshua Daniel Kreitzer Jul 2010

Landscape-Scale And Macrohabitat-Scale Variation In Growth And Survival Of Young June Sucker (Chasmistes Liorus) In Utah Lake, Joshua Daniel Kreitzer

Theses and Dissertations

The spatial scales at which ecological phenomena are viewed constrain the results of interactions between species and their environments. In lake ecosystems, important dynamics have been identified at the landscape scale and the macrohabitat scale. To determine if landscape-scale effects and macrohabitat-scale effects are important in survival and growth of young June suckers, we compared variation among sites in Utah Lake. Large semi-permeable cages were used to house June suckers in situ at five sites representing landscape-scale variation and two sites representing macrohabitat-scale variation in Utah Lake. We compared survival and growth among sites and related it to resource availability …
