The Relationship Between Adult Attachment And Trauma, Lauren Earls Aug 2010

The Relationship Between Adult Attachment And Trauma, Lauren Earls

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Prior research has suggested a complex relationship between childhood interpersonal traumas perpetrated by attachment figures and the experience of trauma in adulthood. Very little is known, however, about how various forms of childhood interpersonal abuse and neglect affect trauma sequelae and adult romantic attachment in women during the childbearing years. Using a sample of postpartum women (N = 104), this study examined the associations between a history of attachment-related traumas (operationalized as childhood interpersonal abuse and neglect) and complex trauma sequelae believed to be unique to victims of interpersonal traumas; the possible role that adult romantic attachment anxiety and avoidance …

A natural product chemistry-based approach was applied to discover small-molecule inhibitors of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1). A Petrosaspongia mycofijiensis marine sponge extract yielded mycothiazole (1), a solid tumor selective compound with no known mechanism for its cell line-dependent cytotoxic activity. Compound 1 inhibited hypoxic HIF-1 signaling in tumor cells (IC(50) 1nM) that correlated with the suppression of hypoxia-stimulated tumor angiogenesis in vitro. However, 1 exhibited pronounced neurotoxicity in vitro. Mechanistic studies revealed that 1 selectively suppresses mitochondrial respiration at complex I (NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase). Unlike rotenone, MPP(+), annonaceous acetogenins, piericidin A, and other complex I inhibitors, mycothiazole is a mixed polyketide/peptide-derived compound …

Identification Of Causative Fish For A Food Poisioning In Taiwan By Using Sds-Page Technique, Tai-Yuan Chen, Nan-Hong Chen, Wen-Feng Lin, Ken-Lin Hwang, Yun-Chieh Huang, Deng-Fwu Hwang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A food poisoning incident has occurred due to ingestion of red grouper meat on February 2006 in southern Taiwan. Two patients showed diarrhea, muscle weakness, vertigo and severe muscle pain. The 2 pieces of causative residues were investigated by toxicity assay. In order to identify the fish species of causative samples, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) technique was applied in this study. According to the low molecular weight region (<30.0 kD) of species-specific patterns extracted from both myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic proteins, two poisoning samples were identified as Lutjanus bohar. L. bohar is a notorious grouper species with ciguatera in …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Industrial wastewater contain higher quantities of salts besides chromium (VI) ions, therefore, the effect of these salts on the adsorption of chromium (VI) should be studied. In this research, the batch removal of toxic hexavalent chromium ions from wastewater and aqueous solution using two different activated carbon marine algae Gracilaria (red algae) and Sargassum sp. (brown algae) were examined. Activated carbon prepared from Gracilaria and Sargassum sp. The chromium uptake was dependent on the equilibrium pH and chromium concentration, with pH = 2.0, being the optimum pH value. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption …

The aim of this study was to investigate if the antioxidant properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation products have the potential to be used in future food materials. Twenty four LAB fermentation products, derived from two LAB strains, Enterococcus (Ent.; formerly Streptococcus) faecalis BCRC13076 and/or Lactobacillus (Lb.) rhamnosus BCRC14068 fermented through four seaweed polysaccharide extracts (SwPSExts) from Gelidium sp., Gracilaria sp., Monostroma (Mon.) nitidum, and Porphyra (Por.) dentate or their seaweed-oligosaccharide-lysates (SwOSLys) source digested by agarases, had their antioxidative properties evaluated by six in vitro methods. Seaweed oligosaccharide LAB fermentation product (SwOS-LAFP) showed a significantly greater reducing power, an …

Vector Quantization Based On Steady-State Memetic Algorithm, Chien-Min Ou Aug 2010

Vector Quantization Based On Steady-State Memetic Algorithm, Chien-Min Ou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A novel memetic algorithm (MA) for the design of vector quantizers (VQs) is presented in this paper. The algorithm uses steady-state genetic algorithm (GA) for the global search and K-means algorithm for the local improvement. As compared with the usual MA using the generational GA for global search, the proposed MA dramatically reduces the computational time for VQ training. In addition, it attains a near global optimal solution, and its performance is insensitive to the selection of initial codewords. Numerical results show that it can save more than 70% of computation time while maintaining a comparable performance as previous MA

Functional, Degradable Polyester Materials Synthesized From Poly(Epsilon-Caprolactone-Co-2-Oxepane-1,5-Dione): An Investigation Into The Derivatization, Self Assembly, And Degradation Behavior Of Poly(Epsilon-Caprolactone)-Based Materials, Rhiannon K. Iha

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Biocompatible, degradable polymers possessing a high degree of complexity are an extremely desirable target for many applications. In order to further develop the range and utility of materials made from aliphatic polyesters, poly(epsilon-caprolactone-co-2-oxepane-1,5-dione) (P(CL-co-OPD)) was used as a polymeric precursor for the construction of a series of functional polyester-based materials. By taking advantage of the electrophilic ketone moieties characteristic of the OPD repeat unit, small molecule and polymer grafts were attached to the PCL backbone through the formation of both hydrazone and ketoxime ether linkages. This work has focused on both the synthesis and characterization of functional, degradable polyesters, including …

[1] Simple mass balance models are applied to a high resolution 234Th profile from the northwest Pacific to examine the magnitude, rate, and depth distribution of particle remineralization processes below the euphotic zone (Ez). Here, excess 234Th (234Th > 238U) below the Ez is attributed to fragmentation processes that result in the conversion of sinking to non‐sinking particles. By considering particulate organic carbon (POC) to 234Th ratios on particles, we show that POC flux attenuation is larger than for 234Th, which we attribute to bacterial and zooplankton consumption of sinking POC. Three case studies are used to demonstrate how different combinations …

Loss and/or degradation of nearshore habitats have led to increased efforts to restore or enhance many of these habitats, particularly those that are deemed essential for marine fishes. Copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus) and lingcod (Ophiodon enlongatus) are dominant members of the typical reef fish community that inhabit rocky and high-relief substrates along the Pacific Northwest. We used acoustic telemetry to document their residency and movements in the nearshore waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska in order to assess use of created reef habitat in an individual-based manner. A total of 57 fish were surgically implanted with …

Transition Metal Dopants Essential For Producing Ferromagnetism In Metal Oxide Nanoparticles, Lydia M. Johnson, Aaron Thurber, Joshua Anghel, Maryam Sabetian, Mark H. Engelhard, Dmitri A. Tenne, Charles B. Hanna, Alex Punnoose

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent claims that ferromagnetism can be produced in nanoparticles of metal oxides without the presence of transition metal dopants have been challenged in this work by investigating 62 high quality well-characterized nanoparticle samples of both undoped and Fe doped (0-10% Fe) ZnO. The undoped ZnO nanoparticles showed zero or negligible magnetization, without any dependence on the nanoparticle size. However, chemically synthesized Zn1-xFexO nanoparticles showed clear ferromagnetism, varying systematically with Fe concentration. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of Zn1-xFexO nanoparticles showed strong dependence on the reaction media used to prepare the samples. The zeta …

Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is the main structural component of Caveolae which are plasma membrane invaginations that participate in vesicular trafficking and signal transduction events. Although, evidence has recently accumulated describing the function of CAV1 in several cancer types, its role in melanoma tumor formation and progression remains poorly explored. Here, by employing B16F10 melanoma cells as an experimental system, we directly explore the function of CAV1 in melanoma tumor growth and metastasis. We first show that CAV1 expression promotes proliferation while it suppresses migration and invasion of B16F10 cells in vitro. When orthotopically implanted in the skin of mice, B16F10 cells …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Mechanical Heart Valve Performance Using A Novel Test Chamber In An Automated Mock Circulatory Loop, Antonio Walker Aug 2010

In Vitro Evaluation Of Mechanical Heart Valve Performance Using A Novel Test Chamber In An Automated Mock Circulatory Loop, Antonio Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Valvular heart disease (VHD) continues to have significant effects on many people’s lives, with numbers expected to grow tremendously over the next few years. Individuals suffering from severe valvular heart disease usually require a heart valve transplant in order to restore the native valve’s vital unidirectional flow regulation. Therefore, artificial heart valve (AHV) research is of very high importance. Previous research studies have provided substantial input in the realm of AHV design relative to durability, thrombotic and hemolytic potential, and overall functionality. However, modifications continue to be warranted due to limitations in the accuracy and time efficiency of the in …

Leukotrienes (LTs), derived from arachidonic acid (AA) released from the membrane by the action of phospholipase A2, are potent lipid mediators of the inflammatory response. In 1983, Dahlén et al. demonstrated that LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4 mediate antigen-induced constriction of bronchi in tissue obtained from subjects with asthma (Dahlén, S. E., Hansson, G., Hedqvist, P., Björck, T., Granström, E., and Dahlén, B. (1983) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 80, 1712-1716). Over the last 25+ years, substantial progress has been made in understanding how LTs exert their effects, and a broader appreciation for the numerous biological processes they mediate has emerged. …

Role Of Sabp2 In Systemic Acquired Resistance Induced By Acibenzolar-S-Methyl In Plants., Diwaker Tripathi Aug 2010

Role Of Sabp2 In Systemic Acquired Resistance Induced By Acibenzolar-S-Methyl In Plants., Diwaker Tripathi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plants have evolved an efficient mechanism to defend themselves against pathogens. Many biotic and abiotic agents have been shown to induce defense mechanism in plants. Acibenzolar-S-Methyl (ASM) is a commercially available chemical inducer of local and systemic resistance (SAR) response in plants. ASM functioning at molecular level is mostly unclear. This research was designed to investigate the mechanism of ASM action in plants. It was hypothesized that SABP2, a plant protein, plays an important role in ASM-mediated defense signaling. Biochemical studies were performed to test the interaction between SABP2 and ASM. Transgenic SABP2-silenced tobacco plants were used to determine the …

Non-Classical Symmetry Solutions To The Fitzhugh Nagumo Equation., Arash Mehraban Aug 2010

Non-Classical Symmetry Solutions To The Fitzhugh Nagumo Equation., Arash Mehraban

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In Reaction-Diffusion systems, some parameters can influence the behavior of other parameters in that system. Thus reaction diffusion equations are often used to model the behavior of biological phenomena. The Fitzhugh Nagumo partial differential equation is a reaction diffusion equation that arises both in population genetics and in modeling the transmission of action potentials in the nervous system. In this paper we are interested in finding solutions to this equation. Using Lie groups in particular, we would like to find symmetries of the Fitzhugh Nagumo equation that reduce this non-linear PDE to an Ordinary Differential Equation. In order to accomplish …

A Comparative Study Between The Standards Of Learning And In-Class Grades., Randetta Lynn Fuller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We examined the Standards of Learning mathematics scores and in-class grades for a rural Virginia county public school system. We looked at third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh grades as well as Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry classes. The purpose of this was to determine whether or not there is a strong correlation between the Standards of Learning and the students' in-class grades. Had a strong enough correlation between the Standards of Learning and in-class grades been found we would have used only the in-class grades to predict the Standard of Learning test scores. However, we found that the …

Spousal Concordance In Academic Achievements And Intelligence And Family-Based Association Studies Identified Novel Loci Associated With Intelligence., Yue Pan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Assortative Mating, the tendency for mate selection to occur on the basis of similar traits, plays an essential role in understanding the genetic variation on academic achievements and intelligence (IQ). It is an important mechanism explaining spousal concordance. We used principal component analysis (PCA) for spousal correlation. There is a significant positive correlation between spouses by the new variable PC1 (correlation coefficient=0.515, p<0.0001). We further research the genetic factor that affects IQ by using the same data. We performed a low density genome-wide association (GWA) analysis with a family-based association test to identify genetic variants that associated with intelligence as measured by WAIS full-score IQ (FSIQ). NTM at 11q25 (rs411280, p=0.000764) and NR3C2 at 4q31.23 (rs3846329, p=0.000675) were 2 novel genes that haven't been associated with IQ from other studies. This study may serve as a resource for replication in other populations and a foundation for future investigations.
