Improved Pcr Design For Mouse Dna By Training Finite State Machines, Salik R. Yadav, Steven M. Corns

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This project presents an updated method for classification of polymerase chain reaction primers in mice using finite state classifiers. This is done to compensate for many lab, organism and chemical specific factors that are costly. using Finite State Classifiers can help decrease the number of primers that fail to amplify correctly. for training these classifiers, five different evolutionary algorithms that use an incremental fitness reward are used. Variations to the number of generations and the values in the fitness reward are examined, and the resulting designs are presented. by controlling the fitness reward correctly, there is a potential to develop …

Muc4, The Integral Membrane Modulator Of Erbb2:The Effects Of Muc4 Expression On Erbb2 And Erbb3 Phosphorylation, Receptor Levels And Sub-Cellular Localization In Breast Cancer Cells Treated With Neuregulin, Patricia F. Boothe

Open Access Dissertations

Muc4, a heterodimeric transmembrane mucin containing EGF-like domains, has been described as an ErbB2-binding protein which modulates signaling via the ErbB2-ErbB3 pathway. In Muc4-transfected MCF-7 cells, Muc4 expression resulted in alteration of both the time course and phosphorylation levels of NRG beta 1 induced phosphorylation and activation of both ErbB2 and ErbB3. Muc4 significantly enhanced the autophosphorylation of ErbB2 over the early (defined 0-30 min) and intermediate (30-120 min) NRG beta 1 treatment times at three sites, Y1248, Y1221 and Y1139. The sites displayed differential maximal phosphorylation times. At Y1248 and Y1139, maximal phosphorylation occurred entirely during the early treatment …

A Study Of Academic Achievement Differences Between The Genders, Marissa Housman Aug 2010

A Study Of Academic Achievement Differences Between The Genders, Marissa Housman

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to explore the academic achievement gap between male and female students by comparing grade point averages across genders. Specifically, the researcher hypothesized that such a gap exists and that females would academically surpass their male counterparts in the classroom. Participants consisted of 300 students in grades 5, 8, and 11 from a public school district in suburban New Jersey. Grade point average (GPA) was generated by converting letter grades into numbers (4.0-0.0) and then averaged. A two-way between-groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed the hypothesis that females have a higher average GPA than males, as a whole …

Hamilton Decompositions Of 6-Regular Abelian Cayley Graphs, Erik E. Westlund Aug 2010

Hamilton Decompositions Of 6-Regular Abelian Cayley Graphs, Erik E. Westlund

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In 1969, Lovasz asked whether every connected, vertex-transitive graph has a Hamilton path. This question has generated a considerable amount of interest, yet remains vastly open. To date, there exist no known connected, vertex-transitive graph that does not possess a Hamilton path. For the Cayley graphs, a subclass of vertex-transitive graphs, the following conjecture was made:

Weak Lovász Conjecture: Every nontrivial, finite, connected Cayley graph is hamiltonian.

The Chen-Quimpo Theorem proves that Cayley graphs on abelian groups flourish with Hamilton cycles, thus prompting Alspach to make the following conjecture:

Alspach Conjecture: Every 2k-regular, connected Cayley graph on a …

Shifts In Postdiscrimination Gradients Within A Stimulus Dimension Based On Female Waist-To-Hip Ratios, Adam Derenne, Michael Breitstein, Rebecca J. Cicha Aug 2010

Shifts In Postdiscrimination Gradients Within A Stimulus Dimension Based On Female Waist-To-Hip Ratios, Adam Derenne, Michael Breitstein, Rebecca J. Cicha

The Psychological Record

Fifteen participants were trained on a within-subjects basis with two discrimination training conditions and one simple generalization training (control) condition to determine whether gradient shifts can be obtained within a stimulus dimension consisting of women’s waist-to-hip ratios (WHRs). In one discrimination condition, the S– consisted of the “optimal” WHR; in the other, the S– consisted of the approximate mean WHR for adult women. For all three conditions, the S+ was an intermediate value. Under both discrimination training conditions, the generalization gradient was observed to shift away from the S– and toward extreme values on the opposite end of the dimension; …

Integrated Affinity Column Capillary Electrophoresis Microdevices For Biomarker Analysis, Weichun Yang Aug 2010

Integrated Affinity Column Capillary Electrophoresis Microdevices For Biomarker Analysis, Weichun Yang

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, microfluidic systems that integrate antibody-based sample preparation methods with electrophoretic separation are developed to analyze multiple biomarkers in a point-of-care setting. To form an affinity column, both monolith materials and wall-coated channels were explored. I successfully demonstrated that monolith columns can be prepared in microfluidic devices via photopolymerization. The selectivity of monolith columns was improved by immobilizing antibodies on the surface. These affinity columns can selectively enrich target analytes and reduce the signal of contaminant proteins up to 25,000 fold after immunoaffinity extraction. These results clearly demonstrate that microchip affinity monoliths can selectively concentrate and purify target …

Inhibition Of Allogeneic Inflammatory Responses By The Ribonucleotide Reductase Inhibitors, Didox And Trimidox, Mohammed S. Inayat, Ismail S. El-Amouri, Mohammad Bani-Ahmad, Howard L. Elford, Vincent S. Gallicchio, Oliver R. Oakley

Health and Clinical Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Graft-versus-host disease is the single most important obstacle facing successful allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Even with current immunosuppressive therapies, morbidity and mortality rates are high. Current therapies including cyclosporine A (CyA) and related compounds target IL-2 signaling. However, although these compounds offer great benefit, they are also associated with multiple toxicities. Therefore, new compounds with a greater efficacy and reduced toxicity are needed to enable us to overcome this hurdle.

METHODS: The allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) is a unique ex vivo method to study a drug's action on the initial events resulting in T-cell activation and proliferation, …

Mitochondrial Control Region Variation Among The Subspecies Of Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone), Ranajit Das

Theses

Sarus cranes (Grus antigone) are the tallest members of the crane family, Gruidae. They are found in four geographically distinct regions: northwest India (Indian Sarus- Grus antigone antigone), southeast Asia (Burmese Sarus- Grus antigone sharpei) and northern Australia (Australian Sarus- Grus antigone gillae). Although the three subspecies are morphologically distinct, their genetic distinctness is unclear. In this study, I focused on control region sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to assess the genetic and phylogeographic distinctness of Sarus subspecies. I used samples from four fragmented populations, seven from India, 16 from southeast Asia, five from Myanmar and eight from Australia. Phylogenetic …

The enzyme catalase converts solar radiation into reactive oxidant species (ROS). In this study, we report that several bacterial catalases (hydroperoxidases, HP), including Escherichia coli HP-I and HP-II also generate reactive oxidants in response to ultraviolet B light (UVB). HP-I and HP-II are identical except for the presence of NADPH. We found that only one of the catalases, HPI, produces oxidants in response to UVB light, indicating a potential role for the nucleotide in ROS production. This prompts us to speculate that NADPH may act as a cofactor regulating ROS generation by mammalian catalases. Structural analysis of the NADPH domains …
