Heads Or Tails: L1 Insertion-Associated 5' Homopolymeric Sequences, Thomas J. Meyer, Deepa Srikanta, Erin M. Conlin, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background. L1s are one of the most successful autonomous mobile elements in primate genomes. These elements comprise as much as 17% of primate genomes with the majority of insertions occurring via target primed reverse transcription (TPRT). Twin priming, a variant of TPRT, can result in unusual DNA sequence architecture. These insertions appear to be inverted, truncated L1s flanked by target site duplications. Results. We report on loci with sequence architecture consistent with variants of the twin priming mechanism and introduce dual priming, a mechanism that could generate similar sequence characteristics. These insertions take the form of truncated L1s with hallmarks …

An Exploration Of Psychopathy Amongst Juvenile Sex Offenders, Laura Margaret Morrell Sep 2010

An Exploration Of Psychopathy Amongst Juvenile Sex Offenders, Laura Margaret Morrell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Despite the growing body of knowledge regarding psychopathy among adolescent sex offenders, additional research is still necessary. In this study I examine four measures of juvenile psychopathy (Childhood Psychopathy Scale, Antisocial Process Screening Device, Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory, and Inventory of Callous and Unemotional Traits) in a sample of 191 incarcerated adolescent sex offenders located in juvenile detention facilities in a Midwestern state. I examine how the diverse scales relate to characteristics of sexual aggression and non-sexual criminality, and which scale specifically has the best predictive validity for sexual as well as non-sexual crime. Of the four instruments and nine …

Ancestry Estimation In A Web-Based, Searchable Database Of Orthodontic Case Files For Patient Care, Education, And Research, Philip J. Kroth, Heather J.H. Edgar, Edward F. Harris, Summers Kalishman, Shamsi Daneshvari

Posters and Presentations

In 2005, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology accepted a donation of orthodontic patient records from an orthodontist who has been practicing in the Albuquerque area since the early 1970s. This collection represents a diversity of patients not often encountered in orthodontic training in the United States. A virtual, de-identified, web-based version of a subset of the collection is now being developed. Users can search for cases with particular characteristics of interest (e.g., patient ancestry, extraction patterns, diagnoses, and cephalometric parameters), then review sequential intra-oral and Xray images to observe treatment outcomes. An innovative feature of the database is that it …

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi

Theses and Dissertations

Individual differences in temperament can be a risk or a protective factor for a child, especially for children at-risk who possess single or multiple risk factors that may interfere with their educational success and affect their healthy development and their life-long outcomes. This research study examined the concurrent and longitudinal relationships between temperament, school adjustment, and academic achievement in children at-risk. Seventy-seven children, ages five to 11 years, were reassessed two years after an initial study. Their teachers completed the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children (TABC), the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), and reported on the children's academic achievement. …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

To evaluate the apoptosis involvement in the angiogenesis as a self-limiting process in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degenerated disc vessels, we assessed, by immunohistochemistry, the detection of TRAIL, its death receptor DR5 and caspase 3. TRAIL, its death receptor DR5 and caspase 3 expression were studied by immunohistochemistry in 15 TMJ discs displaced without reduction and in 4 unaffected discs. These apoptosis molecules were detected in the intima and media layers of newly formed vessels affected discs. In conclusion, vessels apoptosis activation in TMJ disc with ID could be regarded as a self-limiting process that try to leads to …

Syntectonic Deposition And Paleohydrology Of The Spring-Fed Hualapai Limestone And Implications For 5-6 Ma Integration Of The Colorado River System Through Grand Canyon : Evidence From Sedimentology, Geochemistry And Detrital Zircon Analysis, Jessica Lopez Pearce Sep 2010

Syntectonic Deposition And Paleohydrology Of The Spring-Fed Hualapai Limestone And Implications For 5-6 Ma Integration Of The Colorado River System Through Grand Canyon : Evidence From Sedimentology, Geochemistry And Detrital Zircon Analysis, Jessica Lopez Pearce

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Hualapai Limestone, at the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, provides the best sedimentary record available for 12 to 6 Ma at the mouth of the Grand Canyon. Because it directly underlies the first Colorado River gravels, this unit is a key element for understanding the integration of the Colorado River from the Colorado Plateau to the Basin and Range province, and the early paleogeography of the Grand Canyon region. This study combines a tectonic investigation with a stratigraphic and sedimentologic analysis that includes new geochemistry, tephrochronology, and detrital zircon analysis to examine variations of the sedimentary and tectonic …

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler Sep 2010

Individual Variation In Eeg Spectral Power Enhancement And Intelligence, Matthew J. Euler

Psychology ETDs

This study tested the relationship between short-term neuroplasticity and individual differences in intelligence. Twenty-two participants completed cognitive testing and a visual EEG experiment involving exposures to repeated and novel stimuli. Time-frequency analyses of phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced) power showed a small effect of decreasing evoked/induced theta (4-8 Hz) ratios over stimulus exposures, irrespective of condition. Hypotheses that intelligence would relate to an increase in this ratio over exposures were not supported. However, the magnitude of the ratio positively correlated with intelligence; while the amount of induced gamma (30-50Hz) activation pre- to post-stimulus was highly inversely related to g. Results …

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap Sep 2010

Fluctuating Asymmetry, Facial Masculinity, And Offspring Sex Ratio, Melissa Heap

Psychology ETDs

Research on offspring sex ratios and parental condition indicate that parents in better condition may benefit from biasing their offspring toward sons. While measures of phenotypic quality and offspring sex ratio have been examined in other animals, the current study was designed to look at this relationship within human families. I investigated the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and facial masculinity, both possible measures of phenotype, and offspring sex ratio within families. The results were mixed. The fluctuating asymmetry of one sibling covaried negatively with the overall offspring sex ratio within their family. The significant negative correlation between the two provides …

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman Sep 2010

Relationship Quality And Men's Oxidative Stress, Leslie A. Merriman

Psychology ETDs

The association between oxidative stress and quality of romantic relationships was investigated in a sample of 98 college males. Given a postulated life history trade-off between current and future reproductive potential, men currently in higher quality romantic relationships may expend less general mating effort (i.e., less energy allocation to finding, attracting, and competing for new mates) than single men or men in lesser quality relationships. Reduced mating effort may allow greater allocation of energy to anti-oxidant defense systems, and increased resistance to oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consistent with this prediction, men who reported being in higher quality …

Neural Extensions To Robust Parameter Design, Bernard Jacob Loeffelholz Sep 2010

Neural Extensions To Robust Parameter Design, Bernard Jacob Loeffelholz

Theses and Dissertations

Robust parameter design (RPD) is implemented in systems in which a user wants to minimize the variance of a system response caused by uncontrollable factors while obtaining a consistent and reliable system response over time. We propose the use of artificial neural networks to compensate for highly non-linear problems that quadratic regression fails to accurately model. RPD is conducted under the assumption that the relationship between system response and controllable and uncontrollable variables does not change over time. We propose a methodology to find a new set of settings that will be robust to moderate system degradation while remaining robust …

Generalizations Of The Statistical Flowgraph Model Framework, Richard Warr Sep 2010

Generalizations Of The Statistical Flowgraph Model Framework, Richard Warr

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Statistical flowgraphs model multistate semi-Markov processes and provide a way to perform inference for these processes. This methodology provides powerful results that significantly impact the study of multistate semi-Markov processes. This dissertation extends previous work in several ways. First, by demonstrating how any "smooth" transition distribution can be incorporated into a statistical flowgraph model (SFGM), we provide a method to use popular distributions, such as the lognormal, that have not been used in the past. Next, we propose an alternate way to consider Bayesian SFGMs by showing how computation can be accomplished when the traditional methods of SFGMs fail to …

Providing A Theoretical Basis For Nanotoxicity Risk Analysis Departing From Traditional Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic (Pbpk) Modeling, Dirk P. Yamamoto Sep 2010

Providing A Theoretical Basis For Nanotoxicity Risk Analysis Departing From Traditional Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic (Pbpk) Modeling, Dirk P. Yamamoto

Theses and Dissertations

The same novel properties of engineered nanoparticles that make them attractive may also present unique exposure risks. But, the traditional physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling assumption of instantaneous equilibration likely does not apply to nanoparticles. This simulation-based research begins with development of a model that includes diffusion, active transport, and carrier mediated transport. An eigenvalue analysis methodology was developed to examine model behavior to focus future research. Simulations using the physicochemical properties of size, shape, surface coating, and surface charge were performed and an equation was determined which estimates area under the curve for arterial blood concentration, which is a surrogate …

Nutrient Cycling In Impacted Stream Ecosystems: From Microbes To Watersheds, David James Van Horn Sep 2010

Nutrient Cycling In Impacted Stream Ecosystems: From Microbes To Watersheds, David James Van Horn

Biology ETDs

The conditions found in stream ecosystems are an integration of watershed characteristics and processes. Anthropogenic disturbances are part of this integration and include direct inputs to streams, alteration of riparian areas, and modification of catchment properties which affect material inputs. Impacts to discrete portions of terrestrial watersheds combine as water moves down gradient, transporting the byproducts of catchment disturbances to streams including, nutrients, organic materials, particulates, and toxins. This dissertation explores the effects of disturbance on nutrient cycling in stream ecosystems at three spatial scales: the patch scale includes localized processes and assemblages, the reach scale encompasses tens to hundreds …
