Accessing Truth: Marketplaces Of Ideas In The Information Age, Nima Darouian Oct 2010

Accessing Truth: Marketplaces Of Ideas In The Information Age, Nima Darouian

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that the Internet comprises numerous distinct virtual marketplaces, each with unique regulatory frameworks and dynamics, which are essential for the dissemination of information and public welfare. Current legal doctrines, such as those in the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA), and the Principles of the Law of Software Contracts (PLSC), are insufficient to protect the public interest in these virtual marketplaces. The article proposes that courts adopt the Reichman-Franklin standard, which requires mass-market contracts and non-negotiable access agreements to be fair, reasonable, and aligned with the public interest in education, science, research, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of An Europium-Porphyrin Complex, Alejandro Blinder Oct 2010

Synthesis And Characterization Of An Europium-Porphyrin Complex, Alejandro Blinder

All Capstone Projects

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment that has continued to improve over the past thirty years when the first commercially approved photosensitizer (PS) was introduced. Although PDT has many successful applications, the terrifying number of new cancer cases reported each year makes scientists focus their efforts towards the development of new efficient PS for PDT. The biggest obstacle that prohibits PDT from becoming a more widely used therapy is the ineffective photosensitizers (PS) that are available on the market today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the synthesized metal-porphyrin complex as a possible candidate as a PS. …

Ruthenium Complexes As Dna Photonucleases In Treatment Of Malignant Skin Carcinoma, Devi Kalyan Karumanchi Oct 2010

Ruthenium Complexes As Dna Photonucleases In Treatment Of Malignant Skin Carcinoma, Devi Kalyan Karumanchi

All Capstone Projects

A variety of Ruthenium complexes possessing terpyridine complexes as ligands in their coordination sphere have been investigated extensively as DNA photo nucleases in vitro. This work has led to the realization that compounds of Ruthenium bind to DNA purines and that the interactions are of an unprecedented bridging variety. Owing to the molar absorptivity of these complexes in the visible region, direct cleavage of duplex DNA by these complexes requires irradiation in the range of 400-500 nm.

Although the observation of DNA photo cleavage in vitro makes these systems good candidates for further investigation, it does not provide any information …

All Capstone Projects

According to the renowned Mayo Clinic, having a low self-image can lead people to suffer harmful: physical, emotional, and behavioral consequences. Much of women’s selfimage is reliant on comparing themselves to the media’s perception of beauty. In an effort to bolster American women’s self-esteem, a workshop is proposed to explore the relation between portrayal of unconventional models on television shows and women’s/viewer’s self-image.

Purification And Analysis Of Folate-Dye Conjugate, Dilipkumar Sakhiya Oct 2010

Purification And Analysis Of Folate-Dye Conjugate, Dilipkumar Sakhiya

All Capstone Projects

The folate receptor has achieved great importance for use in targeted drug delivery and in vitro and in vivo diagnostic assays. The folate receptor (FR) is over-expressed on several cancer cell types and activated macrophages, but exists in relatively low abundance on the surface of non-cancerous tissue and non inflammatory cells. This unique attribute is the hallmark of folate-targeted methodologies allowing the diagnostic agent and/or drug to be ferried to the specific disease sites while preventing “off target” effects in normal tissues. Protein toxins, chemotherapeutic agents, radioimaging agents, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents liposomes with entrapped drugs, radiotherapeutic agents, …

Degree Of Labeling Of Folate-Bsa With Rhodamine Dye, Prathibha Yazala Oct 2010

Degree Of Labeling Of Folate-Bsa With Rhodamine Dye, Prathibha Yazala

All Capstone Projects

Folic acid is a very important vitamin. It is needed by cells for various physiological functions. It plays an important role in growth and multiplication of cells and therefore is needed very much by cancerous cells. One of the ways folate reaches the cells is the folate receptor mediated endocytosis. Therefore folate binding proteins are abundant on cancerous cells. Clinical trials proved that the folate receptor targeted drug delivery is very promising to increase the drug exposure to malignant cells and to reduce the toxicity to healthy cells. It was recently discovered that folate receptor is also over expressed on …

Impaired Immune Tolerance ToPorphyromonas GingivalisLipopolysaccharide Promotes Neutrophil Migration And Decreased Apoptosis, S Zaric, C Shelburne, R Darveau, Dj Quinn, Et Al

Peninsula Dental School

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the teeth, is characterized by an exaggerated host immune and inflammatory response to periopathogenic bacteria. Toll-like receptor activation, cytokine network induction, and accumulation of neutrophils at the site of inflammation are important in the host defense against infection. At the same time, induction of immune tolerance and the clearance of neutrophils from the site of infection are essential in the control of the immune response, resolution of inflammation, and prevention of tissue destruction. Using a human monocytic cell line, we demonstrate that Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is a major etiological …

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Leukemia is a clonal disease resulting from uncontrolled neoplastic proliferation of WBC precursors inthe bone marrow. In acute leukemia, WBC precursors have unlimited proliferation without differentiation, as aconsequence there is a rapid growth of leukemic blasts in the bone marrow giving the clinical manifestation ofacute bone marrow failure syndrome. In chronic leukemia, the proliferating WBC precursors can partially differentiateinto mature cells and egress into peripheral blood; therefore they cannot cause acute bone marrow failure. Previousreports demonstrated that MT1-MMP and RECK are involved in cancer cells invasion and metastasis. However, the mechanism of egression of leukemic cells into peripheral blood is unclear. …

Status Of The Ohio River Basin Fish Habitat Partnership, Nate Caswell Oct 2010

Status Of The Ohio River Basin Fish Habitat Partnership, Nate Caswell

Cache River Symposium

The Ohio River basin is of national significance both in its geographic scope and the fish and mussel resources contained within it. The Ohio River Basin Fish Habitat Partnership was developed to help focus conservation, restoration, and enhancement efforts on priority habitat for fish and mussels in the watersheds of the Ohio River Basin for the benefit of the public. During the partnership’s planning process participants from across the basin were asked to assemble a list of early action sites that possessed key conservation targets and/or outstanding aquatic biodiversity. The Lower Cache River watershed was identified as one of these …

Predicting Ecological Responses To Reconnection Of The Cache River, Heidi Rantala Oct 2010

Predicting Ecological Responses To Reconnection Of The Cache River, Heidi Rantala

Cache River Symposium

It has been suggested that reconnection of the lower and upper portions of the Cache River will have ecological benefits. To assess potential responses and guide reconnection efforts, we have developed models predicting the ecological responses of potential increases in flow in the lower Cache River. Preliminary data suggest that duckweed cover, which is associated with lack of flow, is an important factor governing oxygen availability in the stream. We predict that small increases in discharge will reduce duckweed cover and result in exponential increases in dissolved oxygen. We also hypothesize that increases in discharge will alter macroinvertebrate communities. In …

Drivers And Constraints Affecting Community Capacity For Watershed Management, Mae Davenport Oct 2010

Drivers And Constraints Affecting Community Capacity For Watershed Management, Mae Davenport

Cache River Symposium

A report released by The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005 explicates the interdependence of healthy ecosystems and societal well-being because of the multiple services ecosystems provide human communities. Still, development practices and land uses continue to degrade hydrologic systems and water quality on which humans depend for services like drinking water, stormwater regulation, and recreation. Decisions at the local level have the greatest impact on water resources. Landowner compliance with regulations, enrollment in cost-share or easement programs, and perhaps most important, voluntary adoption of sustainable land use practices are fundamental to the future of water resources in Illinois and nationwide. …

Multiple Ca2+-Dependent Mechanisms Regulate L-Type Ca 2+ Current In Retinal Amacrine Cells, Merve Tekmen, Evanna Gleason Oct 2010

Multiple Ca2+-Dependent Mechanisms Regulate L-Type Ca 2+ Current In Retinal Amacrine Cells, Merve Tekmen, Evanna Gleason

Faculty Publications

Understanding the regulation of L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ current is an important component of elucidating the signaling capabilities of retinal amacrine cells. Here we ask how the cytosolic Ca2+ environment and the balance of Ca2+-dependent effectors shape native L-type Ca2+ channel function in these cells. To achieve this, whole cell voltage clamp recordings were made from cultured amacrine cells under conditions that address the contribution of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake (MCU), Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM)-dependent channel inactivation (CDI), protein kinase A (PKA), and Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR). Under control conditions, repeated activation of the L-type channels produces a progressive enhancement of the current. Inhibition …

The search for longevity-determining genes in human has largely neglected the operation of genetic interactions. We have identified a novel combination of common variants of three genes that has a marked association with human lifespan and healthy aging. Subjects were recruited and stratified according to their genetically inferred ethnic affiliation to account for population structure. Haplotype analysis was performed in three candidate genes, and the haplotype combinations were tested for association with exceptional longevity. An HRAS1 haplotype enhanced the effect of an APOE haplotype on exceptional survival, and a LASS1 haplotype further augmented its magnitude. These results were replicated in …
