Evolutionary History And Taxonomy Of The Cuscuta Umbellata Complex (Convolvulaceae): Evidence Of Extensive Hybridization From Discordant Nuclear And Plastid Phylogenies, Mihai Costea, Saša Stefanović

The Cuscuta umbellata complex is one of the 15 major clades recently circumscribed in C. subg. Grammica. Most of its members occur in North AMerican and the Caribbean (C. desmouliniana, C. lacerata, C. lacerata, C. leptantha, C. liliputana, C. odontolepsis, C. polyanthemos, C. tuberculata, C. umbellata), but three species (C. acuta, C. membranacea, C. umbellata) grow in South America, and one (C. hyalina) is found as a native species in India, Pakistan and Eastern to South Africa. This study investigates the social factors that affect the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) in young women, focusing on their knowledge of the subject and use of prevention methods in order to discover why STIs, though preventable, are still prevalent in the lives of young adults, and more often, young women. Sixty-one anonymous, closed questionnaires were distributed to female students of at least eighteen years at the Colegio Estadual Francisco da Conceição Menezes in Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia, Brazil, and six structured interviews were conducted with students from the same pool. Sex And The Supremes: Towards A Legal Theory Of Sexuality, Elaine Craig

This thesis examines how the Supreme Court of Canada, across legal contexts, has tended to conceptualize sexuality. It focuses primarily on areas of public law including sexual assault law, equality for sexual minorities, sexual harassment and obscenity and indecency laws. There were a number of trends revealed upon reviewing the jurisprudence in this area. First, the Court’s decisions across legal contexts reveal a tendency to conceptualize sexuality as innate, as a pre-social naturally occurring phenomenon and as an essential element of who we are as individuals. This is true whether one is speaking of the approach to gay and lesbian …

This paper explores the phenomenon of national parks and reserves in Tanzania as a product of early colonial ideology and the evolution of that ideology into a post-independence capitalist enterprise. Serengeti National Park, Selous Game Reserve and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are examined as historically contested sites in which indigenous people have been denied customary use rights by successive regimes of power keen on profiting through resource exploitation and tourism. Though this paper’s focus is Tanzania, it attempts to reveal a pattern of colonial and neo-colonial environmentalism widespread throughout the developing world.

The objective of this report focuses on the secondary goal of the overall program – to develop a better understanding of A. fundyense bloom dynamics in Casco Bay – by examining bloom origin and development (outside Casco Bay, within Casco Bay or both) and correlations between water quality data, location, and bloom intensity. We analyzed the IPSP monitoring program 2006-2008 data to characterize the blooms (spatially and temporally), and examine correlations between water quality, toxicity and A. fundyense data. Environmental Symbiont Acquisition May Not Be The Solution To Warming Seas For Reef-Building Corals, Daniel A. Brazeau, Mary Alice Coffroth, Daniel M. Poland, Eleni L. Petrou, Jennie C. Holmberg

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Coral reefs worldwide are in decline. Much of the mortality can be attributed to coral bleaching (loss of the coral’s intracellular photosynthetic algal symbiont) associated with global warming. How corals will respond to increasing oceanic temperatures has been an area of extensive study and debate. Recovery after a bleaching event is dependent on regaining symbionts, but the source of repopulating symbionts is poorly understood. Possibilities include recovery from the proliferation of endogenous symbionts or recovery by uptake of exogenous stress-tolerant symbionts.

Targeted maximum likelihood estimation (van der Laan & Rubin 2006) is a loss-based semi-parametric estimation method that yields a substitution estimator of a target parameter of the probability distribution of the data that solves the efficient influence curve estimating equation, and thereby yields a double robust locally efficient estimator of the parameter of interest, under regularity conditions. The Bayesian paradigm is concerned with including the researcher’s prior uncertainty about the parameter through a prior distribution, which combined with the likelihood yields a posterior distribution for the parameter that reflects the researcher’s posterior uncertainty. Global Stability Of An Sir Epidemic Model With Delay And General Nonlinear Incidence, C. Connell Mccluskey

An SIR model with distributed delay and a general incidence function is studied. Conditions are given under which the system exhibits threshold behaviour: the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R₀ < 1 and globally attracting if R₀ = 1; if R₀ > 1, then the unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. The global stability proofs use a Lyapunov functional and do not require uniform persistence to be shown a priori. It is shown that the given conditions are satisfied by several common forms of the incidence function.

Surface Morphology Of Platelet Adhesion Influenced By Activators, Inhibitors And Shear Stress, Melanie Groan Watson

Platelet activation involves multiple events, one of which is the generation and release of nitric oxide (NO), a platelet aggregation inhibitor. Platelets simultaneously send and receive various agents that promote a positive and negative feedback control system during hemostasis. Although the purpose of platelet-derived NO is not fully understood, NO is known to inhibit platelet recruitment. NO's relatively large diffusion coefficient allows it to diffuse more rapidly than platelet agonists. It may thus be able to inhibit recruitment of platelets near the periphery of a growing thrombus before agonists have substantially accumulated in those regions.

Nanotechnology has evolved to play a prominent role in our economy. Increased use of nanomaterials poses potential human health risk. It is therefore critical to understand the nature and origin of the toxicity imposed by nanomaterials (nanotoxicity). In this article we review the toxicity of the transition metal oxides in the 4th period that are widely used in industry and biotechnology. Nanoparticle toxicity is compellingly related to oxidative stress and alteration of calcium homeostasis, gene expression, pro-inflammatory responses, and cellular signaling events. The precise physicochemical properties that dictate the toxicity of nanoparticles have yet to be defined, but may include …

Fisheries Research Reports

This report demonstrates a method to rapidly assess the cumulative risk to sustainability of bycatch species of multiple fisheries. The method draws on other techniques already published in scientific literature and adds a new cumulative ranked estimate of total catch across multiple fisheries.
