A Four-Cysteine Zinc Finger In Carboxyltransferase Structurally Links The Functions Of Enzymatic Activity And Negative Feedback Regulation Of Translation, Glen D. Meades
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is the first and committed step of de novo fatty acid synthesis in all organisms. In Escherichia coli, the enzyme is expressed as separate proteins for the three functional components: a biotin carboxylase, a biotin carboxyl carrier protein, and a carboxyltransferase. The carboxyltransferase enzyme has an α2β2 heterotetrameric quaternary arrangement. The crystal structure of the β subunit revealed a zinc-binding domain, a feature common among nucleic acid-binding proteins. Carboxyltransferase preferentially binds mRNA coding for its two subunits over other nucleic acids, suggesting a means by which the enzyme can regulate its own expression. In the first study, the …
Optimization And Toxocologic Effects Of Cancer Immuno-Electrogene Therapy Using A Tumor-Targeted Interleukin-12 Gene Construct, Scott Douglas Reed
Optimization And Toxocologic Effects Of Cancer Immuno-Electrogene Therapy Using A Tumor-Targeted Interleukin-12 Gene Construct, Scott Douglas Reed
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation includes a comprehensive current review of reversible electroporation (EP) and other related physical gene transfection techniques; an overview of results of electrochemogene therapy (ECGT) used to treat naturally occurring spontaneous neoplasms in dogs; and the results of comprehensive, pre-clinical toxicology testing of electrogene therapy (EGT) of a tumor-targeted version of interleukin-12 (IL-12) in mice. Intralesional bleomycin (BLM) and feline interleukin-12 (fIL-12) DNA injection combined with trans-lesional EP resulted in complete cure of two recurrent oral squamous cell carcinomas and an acanthomatous ameloblastoma in a series of six cases of spontaneous neoplasia in pet dogs. The three remaining dogs, …

Fuel Cells are attractive power source for use in electronic applications. Physical phenomena (water generation, saturation effect in fuel cell, poisoning, and thermal stress) are studied that governs the operation of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and Solid Oxide Fuel cell (SOFC). Additionally, experimental studies and numerical simulations on PEMFC gas flow channel, the determination of the impact of the single channel fuel cell are presented. Furthermore, preliminary study is done for the application of APS (Air Plasma Spray) to SOFC and adhesion of anode and cathode with electrolytes for the determination of parameters involved in manufacturing the …
Ecological Assembly Of High-Diversity Plant Communities: Dispersal, Competition, And Environmental Filtering In Longleaf Pine Savannas, Jonathan Andrew Myers
Ecological Assembly Of High-Diversity Plant Communities: Dispersal, Competition, And Environmental Filtering In Longleaf Pine Savannas, Jonathan Andrew Myers
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ecological mechanisms proposed to explain community assembly and the maintenance of biodiversity are hypothesized to fall along a theoretical continuum bounded at one extreme by deterministic processes (“niche assembly”) and at the other extreme by stochastic processes (“dispersal assembly”). In this dissertation, I explore the idea that the position of ecological communities along the niche-dispersal assembly continuum is dynamic in space and time. Using field experiments in a high-diversity longleaf pine savanna, I test the general hypothesis that “ecological filters” (competition, disturbance, and resource availability) contribute to niche assembly through their effects on established plant species and recruitment from the …
Three Essays On The Role Of Amenities As An Economic Development Strategy, Junpyo Hong
Three Essays On The Role Of Amenities As An Economic Development Strategy, Junpyo Hong
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
It is well known that an amenity is a key driving engine to regional economic growth. However, the site-specific nature of an amenity can characterize them as public goods. Due to this characteristic, local governments have difficulty optimally supplying amenities. This dissertation tries to find relationships between an amenity and economic growth. Three empirical papers comprise the original research in this dissertation. The findings of the meta-analysis in the first essay suggest little methodological diversity exists among researchers linking amenities to economic growth., I do find that employment growth is more likely related to man-made amenities even in research on …
Chemistry Of Rhenium(I) Tricarbonyl Complexes Of Biomedical Relevance, Theshini Perera
Chemistry Of Rhenium(I) Tricarbonyl Complexes Of Biomedical Relevance, Theshini Perera
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
fac-[ReI(CO)3L]n complexes serve as models for short-lived fac-[99mTcI(CO)3L] imaging tracers. Dangling groups on L, needed to achieve desirable biodistribution, complicate the NMR spectra, which are not readily understood. In fac-[ReI(CO)3L]+ with less complicated L, NH groups (exo-NH) projecting toward the L face sometimes showed an upfield shift attributable to steric shielding of the exo-NH group from the solvent by the chelate rings. To investigate whether exo-NH groups in six-membered rings exhibit the same effect and whether the …
Modeling The Impacts Of Pulsed Riverine Inflows On Hydrodynamics And Water Quality In The Barataria Bay Estuary, Anindita Das
Modeling The Impacts Of Pulsed Riverine Inflows On Hydrodynamics And Water Quality In The Barataria Bay Estuary, Anindita Das
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Eutrophication and coastal wetland loss are the major environmental problems affecting estuaries around the world. In Louisiana, controlled diversions of the Mississippi River water back into coastal wetlands are thought to be an important engineering solution that could reverse coastal land loss. There are concerns, however, that freshwater diversions may increase nutrient inputs and create severe eutrophication problems in estuaries and wetlands adjacent to the diversion sites. My dissertation research concerns modeling the effects of the observed and hypothetical freshwater diversion discharges on the hydrodynamics, salinity and water quality in the Barataria estuary, a deltaic estuary in south Louisiana. This …
Developing Tools To Identify Factors That Limit Production In Coastal Marshes, Vanessa Danielle Tobias
Developing Tools To Identify Factors That Limit Production In Coastal Marshes, Vanessa Danielle Tobias
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Marsh loss is a problem in many areas around the world. In Louisiana’s coastal marshes, where Spartina patens is the most common plant, restoration and management seek to slow wetland loss rates that average approximately 77.4 km2/year. To combat the problem, scientists and managers require tools to determine local causes and evaluate the effectiveness of management techniques. Current methods for identifying factors that limit productivity in marshes are too time-consuming or expensive for wide-spread, regular use. Critical values of elemental concentrations in plant tissue are widely used to diagnose mineral deficiencies and toxicities in agricultural crops, however. I used the …
A Qualitative Exploration Of Christian, Native American Families, Mandy Lynn Swanson
A Qualitative Exploration Of Christian, Native American Families, Mandy Lynn Swanson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Research on Native American families is limited and emphasizes the deficits of families and overlooks those Native American families that are thriving. This study seeks to illuminate the strengths of highly religious, Christian, Native American, married couples. The study employs a strengths-based perspective to examine how and why religious coping is meaningful and influential for these Native American couples’ enduring marriages and in their efforts to be responsive parents. From interviews of fifteen heterosexual, Native American, married couples (n=30), five themes emerged from the coding and analysis: 1) Faith and Culture: “They go hand in hand”, 2) Influence of Faith …
Exercise-Induced Alterations In Melanocortin Receptor Expression And Inflammation, Tara Michelle Henagan
Exercise-Induced Alterations In Melanocortin Receptor Expression And Inflammation, Tara Michelle Henagan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Inflammatory cytokines play a significant role in the pathogenesis of obesity-related diseases and have been implicated as integral factors in both early and late phases of atherosclerosis. Lifestyle modifications such as increasing physical activity and making dietary changes to induce weight loss are part of the primary prescription for the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, physical activity has been implicated as a potentially effective regimen for the control of inflammation, yet little is known about the anti-inflammatory mechanistic alterations induced by physical activity.
Exercise training causes acute changes in inflammation immediately post exercise, evidenced by upregulation of inflammatory cytokines and …
Antioxidant Nanoparticles As Delivery Systems, Carlos Ernesto Astete R.
Antioxidant Nanoparticles As Delivery Systems, Carlos Ernesto Astete R.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of the study was to develop antioxidant polymeric nanoparticles as a new delivery system for food and pharmaceutical applications. Natural antioxidants like alpha-tocopherol, vitamin C, and carnosine, are responsible to protect biological systems against free radicals attack. The conjugation of vitamin C-vitamin E (EC) and alpha-tocopherol-carnosine (VECAR) were performed to obtain antioxidant surfactants which were used for polymeric nanoparticle synthesis. The surfactant made of á-tocopherol (vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) of antioxidant properties dubbed as EC was used to make poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles. Self-assembled EC nanostructures and PLGA-EC nanoparticles were made by nanoprecipitation, and the …
Monstrous Bodies: Femininity And Agency In Young Adult Horror Fiction, June Pulliam
Monstrous Bodies: Femininity And Agency In Young Adult Horror Fiction, June Pulliam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Young Adult horror fiction with female protagonists presents sympathetically the untenable situation of adolescent girls within society whereby they are increasingly pressured to embody a doll-like feminine ideal that deprives them of voice and agency. In Young Adult horror fiction, the monstrous Other problematizes what is presented to girls as “normal” and “natural” feminine behavior. As a double with a difference, the monstrous Other is an iteration of femininity whose similarity to the original implies the possibility of resisting restrictive gender roles. Because in Young Adult horror fiction the monstrous Other is nearly always a sympathetic character, it is fairly …
Artisanal Whaling In The Atlantic: A Comparative Study Of Culture, Conflict, And Conservation In St. Vincent And The Faroe Islands, Russell Fielding
Artisanal Whaling In The Atlantic: A Comparative Study Of Culture, Conflict, And Conservation In St. Vincent And The Faroe Islands, Russell Fielding
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Whalers from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the North Atlantic archipelago of the Faroe Islands hunt pilot whales and a variety of other small cetaceans for food. Vincentian whalers use harpoons, thrown by hand or fired from a modified shotgun mounted on the boat. Faroese whalers, using several dozen boats, work cooperatively to drive an entire pod of whales ashore, where shore-based whalers are waiting to complete the kill with traditional whaling knives. Vincentian whaling traces its origins to the late nineteenth century. Records of Faroese whaling date to the late sixteenth century but the practice is thought …
Signaling Of Integrin Lower Leg And Transmembrane Domains, Wei Wang
Signaling Of Integrin Lower Leg And Transmembrane Domains, Wei Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Integrin conformational changes mediate integrin activation and signaling triggered by intracellular molecules or extracellular ligands. Even though it has been shown that TM and/or cytoplasmic α and β domains associate in the resting state and separation of these domains is required for integrin signaling, it is still not clear how this signal is transmitted from the transmembrane domain through two long extracellular legs to the ligand-binding headpiece. In addition, integrin TM homomeric association was also observed. But the role of this interaction remains elusive. In this work, the platelet integrin, αIIbβ3, has been used to elucidate the roles of integrin …
A Study Of Technology Integration In An All Girls' School: The Role Of Attitudes And Beliefs Of Teachers, Patrick Kelvin Saidu
A Study Of Technology Integration In An All Girls' School: The Role Of Attitudes And Beliefs Of Teachers, Patrick Kelvin Saidu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study is primarily designed to address the relationships between teachers’ beliefs, attitudes, anxiety, perceptions and barriers with respect to their use of technology in promoting students’ learning. Unlike most previous studies of technology integration, this study is conducted at a gender specific, technology-rich, religious-based private school. In addition the study aims at identifying the various levels of technology adoption of teachers in this technology rich school environment and potentially suggesting “why or why not” the different levels are observed. Teachers in general nationwide have increased their technology integration and adoption over the past five years, although they still do …
Embyronic Nicotine Exposure And Its Impact On Spinal Neuron Development In Zebrafish, Latoya Telameca Paul
Embyronic Nicotine Exposure And Its Impact On Spinal Neuron Development In Zebrafish, Latoya Telameca Paul
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nicotine, a drug of abuse, has been shown to have deleterious outcomes on nervous system development in vertebrates. Using zebrafish behavior as a diagnostic tool, we aimed to understand the effects of embryonic nicotine exposure on spinal neuron development. We initially quantified nicotine incorporation into zebrafish embryos. We found that only a fraction of the waterborne concentration of nicotine was incorporated into embryos. Also, when embryos were exposed to epibatidine and ABT 418, potent alpha 4/beta 2 nAChRs agonists, the embryos exhibited a robust swim-like behavioral response similar to that of nicotine. We then performed immunohistochemistry utilizing the mAB290 antibody …
Design And Development Of Chiral And Achiral Molecularly Imprinted Stationary Phases, Jason Paul Lejeune
Design And Development Of Chiral And Achiral Molecularly Imprinted Stationary Phases, Jason Paul Lejeune
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Although the cross-linker can comprise over 80% of the polymer composition, improving the nature of the cross-linker in molecularly imprinted polymers has not been studied extensively. The goal of this research is to develop novel cross-linking monomers to either use in the One MoNomer Molecularly Imprinted Polymer system (OMNiMIP) or use in conjunction with other commercially available cross-linkers and functional monomers. Chapter 2 contains research into the understanding of the performance of a new cross-linking monomer (N, O - bismethacryloyl ethanolamine, NOBE) discovered in the Spivak Research Group. The ability of this monomer to outperform traditional two monomer systems in …
The Feminization Of Private Investigation: A Sociological Analysis, Jessica Simpson Pearce
The Feminization Of Private Investigation: A Sociological Analysis, Jessica Simpson Pearce
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation outlines the occupation of private investigation and the role that females play within that profession. The difficulties women experience in male-oriented occupations remains noteworthy in sociological research today. Progress has been made, yet many barriers still exist for women. These include structural, social, and cultural factors that influence women and/or the jobs that they hold. With the completion of interviews with twenty-six female private investigators, I was able to analyze the existing structural, interactional, and gender barriers which moderate the number of women that work as private investigators. Few studies have examined this occupation and this gap may …
Urate Responsive Marr Homologs, Inoka Chinthana Perera
Urate Responsive Marr Homologs, Inoka Chinthana Perera
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Differential gene expression in response to internal and external stimuli is studied in detail to understand the intricate mechanisms underlying response to various environmental stressors in microorganisms. MarR family transcriptional regulators have been studied for their involvement in such mechanisms. This work elucidates the mechanism of urate-induced attenuation of DNA binding of HucR, a MarR homolog, and extends this mechanism to describe a novel subfamily of MarR homologs responsive to urate, proposing a physiological relevance of utilizing urate as a signaling molecule.
HucR (hypothetical urate regulator) binds to the shared promoter region between uricase and hucR genes. It has high …
Revealing The Role Of Receptor Wsx1: A Double-Edged Sword In Tumor Progession, Denada Dibra
Revealing The Role Of Receptor Wsx1: A Double-Edged Sword In Tumor Progession, Denada Dibra
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Tumor initiation and progression are dependent on both aberrant gene expression in tumor cells and the communication between tumor cells and its micro- and systemic microenvironment. Many tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes have been characterized to suppress or promote tumor growth, but fewer genes in tumors are well-characterized as interacting with immune cells in the host to promote or inhibit tumor growth. The interleukin (IL) 27 receptor WSX1 is expressed in immune cells and induces an IL27-dependent immune response. Opposing this conventional dogma, our initial results reveal a much higher level of WSX1 expression in multiple types of epithelial tumor …
Inoculation With Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Or Crop Rotation With Mycorrhizal Plants Improves The Growth Of Maize In Limed Acid Sulfate Soil, Hasao Higo, Katsunori Isobe, Dong-Jin Kang, Kazuhiro Ujie, Rhae A. Drijber, Ryuichi Ishii
Inoculation With Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Or Crop Rotation With Mycorrhizal Plants Improves The Growth Of Maize In Limed Acid Sulfate Soil, Hasao Higo, Katsunori Isobe, Dong-Jin Kang, Kazuhiro Ujie, Rhae A. Drijber, Ryuichi Ishii
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improve the uptake of immobile mineral nutrients such as phosphate, thereby improving plant growth. In acid sulfate soil (ASS), AMF spore density is generally low which impacts root colonization and phosphate uptake. Thus, inoculation may help increase AMF colonization of crops grown in ASS. AMF spore density decreases after cultivation of a non-host crop or bare fallow. In addition, preceding crops affect the growth and yield of subsequent crops. The production of AMF inocula requires AMF-compatible plants. The objective of the present study is to elucidate the effect of preceding crops on the persistence of inoculated …
The Conserved Deda Family Of E. Coli Membrane Proteins: Genetic And Topological Analysis, Kandi Sheral Thompkins
The Conserved Deda Family Of E. Coli Membrane Proteins: Genetic And Topological Analysis, Kandi Sheral Thompkins
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ludox density gradients were used to enrich for Escherichia coli mutants with conditional growth defects and alterations in membrane composition. A temperature-sensitive mutant named Lud135 was isolated with mutations in two related, nonessential genes: yghB and yqjA. yghB harbors a single missense mutation (G203D) and yqjA contains a nonsense mutation (W92TGA) in Lud135. Both mutations are required for the temperature-sensitive phenotype: targeted deletion of both genes in a wild-type background results in a strain with a similar phenotype and expression of either gene from a plasmid restores growth at elevated temperatures. The mutant has altered membrane phospholipid levels, with elevated …

Probing The Finance Gap Theory: Does Gender Affect Campaign Contributions?, Rhonda Wrzenski
Probing The Finance Gap Theory: Does Gender Affect Campaign Contributions?, Rhonda Wrzenski
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In our field, scholarly literature contends that women win a similar percentage of the vote and raise a similar amount of money as their male opponents when they campaign (Newman 1994; Burrell 1994; Seltzer et al. 1997; Dolan 2006; Darcy et al. 1994; Wilhite and Theilmann 1986; Burrell 1985; Uhlaner and Schlozman 1986; Welch et al. 1985). However, women are still underrepresented at all levels of government and this may be a function of biases in the campaign finance network that have gone largely undetected. Differences may be more readily apparent at the sub-national level and among particular classes of …
Dietary Resistant Starch Improved Maternal Glycemic Control In Goto-Kakizaki Rat, Li Shen
Dietary Resistant Starch Improved Maternal Glycemic Control In Goto-Kakizaki Rat, Li Shen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Treatment for maternal hyperglycemia is limited on account of safety concerns for fetus. Our previous work has shown that inclusion of resistant starch in the diet decreases body fat accumulation in rodents, increases GLP-1 at both the gene expression level and plasma levels, and improves glucose tolerance in STZ-induced diabetic mice. However, studies concerning dietary resistant starch and maternal hyperglycemia are scarce. In this project, we examined the effects of dietary resistant starch in pregnant Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats to improve glycemic control. Animal experiments were conducted to test the hypotheses. In study 1, the female GK rats were randomly grouped …

Emissions Savings In The Corn-Ethanol Life Cycle From Feeding Coproducts To Livestock, Virgil R. Bremer, Adam Liska, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Haishun Yang, Daniel T. Walters, Kenneth G. Cassman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Environmental regulations on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from corn (Zea mays L.)-ethanol production require accurate assessment methods to determine emissions savings from coproducts that are fed to livestock. We investigated current use of coproducts in livestock diets and estimated the magnitude and variability in the GHG emissions credit for coproducts in the corn-ethanol life cycle. The coproduct GHG emissions credit varied by more than twofold, from 11.5 to 28.3 g CO2e per MJ of ethanol produced, depending on the fraction of coproducts used without drying, the proportion of coproduct used to feed beef cattle (Bos taurus …

Background: The nutritional and economic value of many crops is effectively a function of seed protein and oil content. Insight into the genetic and molecular control mechanisms involved in the deposition of these constituents in the developing seed is needed to guide crop improvement. A quantitative trait locus (QTL) on Linkage Group I (LG I) of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) has a striking effect on seed protein content.
Results: A soybean near-isogenic line (NIL) pair contrasting in seed protein and differing in an introgressed genomic segment containing the LG I protein QTL was used as a resource to demarcate …
The Manifold Operations Of The Gothic Double, Brian Demars
The Manifold Operations Of The Gothic Double, Brian Demars
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The gothic novel’s emergence as a dominant genre in the 19th century is illustrative of a shift in popular ideology taking place in Western Europe during this period. Competing viewpoints, particularly between opposing classes, directly reflect the uncertainties, anxieties, and aspirations of a continent undergoing a significant transition. Because the gothic draws upon the tension between contending attitudes—spiritualism and secularism, realism and romanticism, nationalism and imperialism, and aristocratic and bourgeois—it exposes how ideology embedded in these concepts either adds to or detracts from the greater good of the community.
The technique of doubling is utilized to locate divergent ideologies and …
Academic And Non-Academic Factors As Predictors Of Early Academic Success In Bacclaureate Nursing Programs, Deborah S. Dunn
Academic And Non-Academic Factors As Predictors Of Early Academic Success In Bacclaureate Nursing Programs, Deborah S. Dunn
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Nurses are in very high demand and this situation has placed an unprecedented call for faculty in higher education institutions to produce more graduates. With more students applying to nursing programs and a limited number of nursing slots available, admission to nursing programs has become increasingly competitive. Given these conditions, a trend toward increasing admissions standards has been noticed as program leaders and faculty struggle to institute some type of sorting method to select the applicants who are most likely to succeed in their nursing education programs. Entrance examinations have been increasingly used as a major part of admissions criteria …
Influence Of The Reducing Agent Triphenylphosphine On Cyclooxygenase-1 Metabolism Of Arachidonic Acid, Rohini Sidhu
Influence Of The Reducing Agent Triphenylphosphine On Cyclooxygenase-1 Metabolism Of Arachidonic Acid, Rohini Sidhu
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Cyclooxygenase (COX) metabolizes the polyunsaturated fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA) to PGG2, a cyclic endoperoxide that also contains a hydroperoxide, which is subsequently reduced to an alcohol in the enzyme to yield PGH2. Reactions catalyzed by COX-1 are significantly influenced by lipid hydroperoxides. The tyrosyl radical that abstracts the 13 pro(s) hydrogen from AA to initiate the COX catalytic cycle is generated by iron-oxo derivatives in the enzyme that result from lipid hydroperoxide interaction with heme iron. Commercial preparations of arachidonic acid (AA) contain lipid hydroperoxides that can be separated from AA by thin layer chromatography and readily reduced to …
