Chromium is a very versatile metal that is used for many applications in the world. Two of the most common ions of chromium that occur naturally are Cr(III) and Cr(VI). These two oxidation states have very different heath effects in living organisms. Cr(III) is relatively non-toxic to living organisms; however, Cr(VI) is very toxic to most living organisms This study was conducted to find a simple and cost effective method to sequester these two common ionic species of chromium from sources of water that are adjacent to or that are affected by other water sources contaminated by these two ions. …

ATP is a multifunctional nucleotide considered to be the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer. ATP is utilized ubiquitously for the transport of chemical energy within the cell in addition to acting as a substrate in the regulation of many metabolic and signaling transduction pathways such as kinase-mediated signaling cascades. Interestingly, the functional mechanisms of many enzymes require the binding of ATP to trigger key structural and conformational changes that ultimately result in enzyme-directed catalysis. Two of the most omnipresent ATPases within the cell include the V-ATPase rotary proton pump and the Hsp90 protein-folding chaperone. Structural and biochemical …

The Use Of Protective Behavioral Strategies Is Related To Reduced Risk In Heavy Drinking College Students With Poorer Mental And Physical Health, Joseph W. Labrie, Shannon R. Kenney, Andrew Lac Jan 2010

The Use Of Protective Behavioral Strategies Is Related To Reduced Risk In Heavy Drinking College Students With Poorer Mental And Physical Health, Joseph W. Labrie, Shannon R. Kenney, Andrew Lac

Heads Up!

The present study examined the moderating role of health status (physical, mental, and social health) and the relationships between protective behavioral strategies utilized to reduce high-risk drinking (e.g., avoiding drinking games, setting consumption limits, or having a designated driver) and alcohol use and negative consequences in a sample of heavy drinking college students (N = 1,820). In this high risk sample, multiple regression analyses showed that stronger social health was related to increased drinking, while poorer physical, mental, and social health were related to increased alcohol negative consequences. Further, moderation effects revealed that increasing the use of protective behaviors …

Contention Of Lust, Caution: Sexuality, Visuality And Female Subjectivity, Yanjie Wang Jan 2010

Contention Of Lust, Caution: Sexuality, Visuality And Female Subjectivity, Yanjie Wang

Asian and Asian American Studies Faculty Works

This paper investigates the ways in which Ang Lee provides new insights into subject formation in his film Lust, Caution (Se Jie, 2007). In the paradigm of structuralism, the subject is defined, as well as confined, by the symbolic order or the dominant ideology. The puzzle therefore rests on how to explain the subject’s negotiation with its normative identity, its denial thereof, or even its subversion of said identity. In a close reading of the female protagonist’s subject formation in Lust, Caution, this paper acknowledges the power of ideology, specifically the power of its interpellative operation, in constructing a subject. …

Improving Efficiencies And Modeling A Cyclic Suspended Ion Exchange (Six(C)) Drinking Water Pre-Treatment Systems, Owen P. Friend-Gray

Master's Theses and Capstones

This research focused on three primary components of the Suspended Ion eXchange (SIX(c)) process developed by PWN Water Supply Company North Holland. The first step focused on the resin regeneration procedure. It was shown that the current system could be improved and that reducing the complexity of the system simplified the process and increased the regeneration efficiency. The second step focused on the resin tank contactor hydraulics. It was determined that for the sequential completely mixed reactor design at PWN, high flows with low mixing speed of the overhead paddle mixers led to the most efficient hydraulic regime. The third …

Isotopic Analysis Of Arctic Ground Squirrel Tissues And Potential Food Sources, Julee Shamhart Jan 2010

Isotopic Analysis Of Arctic Ground Squirrel Tissues And Potential Food Sources, Julee Shamhart

Master's Theses and Capstones

Given limited knowledge of the food sources of Arctic ground squirrels, an important arctic prey species, it is difficult to predict the implications of changes in food source availability that could result from climate change. I hypothesized that Arctic ground squirrels at two colonies, Atigun and Toolik, would have similar feeding habits and mushrooms would contribute to their diet The Arctic ground squirrels at Toolik had significantly higher del15N (3.7 per mill difference) and del13C values (1.3 per mill difference) than those at Atigun. Mixing models indicated that the signatures observed in the Atigun hair could result from a combination …

Ribosome Recycling Step In Yeast Cytoplasmic Protein Synthesis Is Catalyzed By Eef3 And Atp, Sarah F. Mitchell Jan 2010

Ribosome Recycling Step In Yeast Cytoplasmic Protein Synthesis Is Catalyzed By Eef3 And Atp, Sarah F. Mitchell

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

After each round of protein biosynthesis, the posttermination complex (PoTC) consisting of a ribosome, mRNA, and tRNA must be disassembled into its components for a newround of translation. Here, we show that a Saccharomyces cerevisiae model PoTC was disassembled by ATP and eukaryotic elongation factor 3 (eEF3). GTP or ITP functioned with less efficiency and adenosine 5γ′-(β,γ-imido)triphosphate did not function at all. The kcat of eEF3 was 1.12 min-1, which is comparable to that of the in vitro initiation step. The disassembly reaction was inhibited by aminoglycosides and cycloheximide. The subunits formed from the yeast model PoTC remained separated under …

Delayed Differentiation In Embryonic Stem Cells And Mesodermal Progenitors In The Absence Of Ctbp2, Heather Tarleton Jan 2010

Delayed Differentiation In Embryonic Stem Cells And Mesodermal Progenitors In The Absence Of Ctbp2, Heather Tarleton

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Mammalian embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are characterized by an ability to self-renew and give rise to each of the three germ layers. ESCs are a pluripotential source of numerous primitive progenitors and committed lineages and can make stoichiometric decisions leading to either asymmetric or symmetric cell division. Several genes have been identified as essential for maintenance of self-renewal, but few non-lineage specific genes have been identified as essential for differentiation. We selected the chromatin factor Ctbp2 from microarray data for its enriched expression in stem cells, in comparison to committed progenitors. RNA interference (RNAi) was used to knockdown gene expression …

A Comparison Of Tooth Wear And Breakage In Rancho La Brea Sabertooth Cats And Dire Wolves Across Time, Wendy J. Binder Jan 2010

A Comparison Of Tooth Wear And Breakage In Rancho La Brea Sabertooth Cats And Dire Wolves Across Time, Wendy J. Binder

Biology Faculty Works

The carnivores preserved in the late Pleistocene Rancho La Brea tar seep deposits display a remarkably high incidence of teeth broken in life as compared with modern species. In a previous study examining tooth breakage, tooth wear and individual age of Canis dirus over different periods in time, we found that Pit 13 C. dirus (about 15,000 years before present [ybp]) exhibited heavier tooth wear and fractured their teeth about three times more often than those of the younger Pit 61/67 (about 12,000 ybp). No significant difference was found in the age structure of the population, suggesting this came from …

Upjohn Press

These papers address globalization issues with a special emphasis on its impact on poverty. Advances in transportation and telecommunications with instantaneous information and communication flows requires new approaches given the wide differences in cultures, political systems, languages, and ethnicities. Extreme variation in the international distributions of wealth, income, and poverty remain as enormous social problems to be addressed. In general, the contributors recommend expanding the flows between countries to accelerate growth and reduce inequalities. These flows include international trade and capital, migration, remittances, and foreign aid. But in addition to these hard commodities and dollars, there are flows of ideas, …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Background/Purpose In order to increase the success rate of temporary anchorage devices (TADs), it is important not to cause root injury or soft-tissue inflammation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate hard- and soft-tissue thicknesses of TAD insertion sites and the perforation ratio with different lengths of TADs by cone beam volumetric computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods The hard- and soft-tissue thicknesses were evaluated on 10 patients (5 males and 5 females) by CBCT. The ages ranged 20-36 years. Ten regions of interest (ROIs) in extra-alveolar bone were selected and based on anchorage requirements. Soft-tissue depths were …

Gender, Sexuality, And The Authoritarian Personality, Bill E. Peterson, Eileen L. Zurbriggen Jan 2010

Gender, Sexuality, And The Authoritarian Personality, Bill E. Peterson, Eileen L. Zurbriggen

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The political correlates of the authoritarian personality have been well established by researchers, but important linkages to other major constructs in psychology need fuller elaboration. We present new data and review old data from our laboratories that show the myriad ways in which authoritarianism is implicated in the important domain of gender roles. We show that women and men high in authoritarianism live in rigidly gendered worlds where male and female roles are narrowly defined, attractiveness is based on traditional conceptions of masculinity and femininity, and conventional sexual mores are prescribed. As a construct, authoritarianism is not just relevant for …

In nature, animals commonly experience multiple combinations of stimuli at various points in time. When two or more seemingly unrelated stimuli are detected at the same time using different sensory systems, there is the potential for an association to form between the stimuli. The animal may learn and show a response originally associated with one stimulus when it now detects the second stimulus. These stimuli are the unconditioned and conditioned stimulus of classical and operant conditioning. Many species of animals are known to learn via operant conditioning and a variety of responses can become associated with formerly neutral stimuli. Crayfish …

In my first manuscript, I investigate the global stability character of the equilibrium points and the period-two solutions of [special characters omitted] with positive parameters and nonnegative initial conditions. I show that every solution of the equation in the title converges to either the zero equilibrium, the positive equilibrium or the period-two solution, for all values of parameters outside of a specific set defined in the paper. In the case when the equilibrium points and period-two solution coexist I give a precise description of the basins of attraction of all points. My results give an affirmative answer to Conjecture 9.5.6 …

Antagonism Of Bacterial Cell To Cell Signalling By Metabolites Of Marine Gram-Positive Bacteria, Margaret E. Teasdale

Open Access Dissertations

A form of communication in bacteria called quorum sensing (QS) regulates both microbial biofilm development and pathogenesis. QS is a process by which bacteria take a census of their numbers and regulate specific phenotypic expression using small signaling molecules called autoinducers. Interference with QS has been identified as a potentially novel therapeutic approach to the treatment of bacterial infections. This attenuation of the bacterial community prevents the successful establishment of an infection. The second chapter discusses the isolation of causative agents of bioluminescence inhibition in Vibrio harveyi. Bioassay-guided fractionation lead to the isolation of two arylethylamides from isolate C42, a …

Lead Exposure, Aging And Biomarkers In Alzheimer's Disease, Aderemi Dosunmu

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. To investigate AD risk factors, we reviewed epidemiologic case control studies and recent research for AD's connection to the environment. Next, we examined the number one risk factor in AD, aging. We compared and contrasted lifespan profiles of AD-associated mRNA and protein levels in monkeys and mice. The AD-related biomarkers were APP mRNA and protein; Aβ levels; specificity protein 1 (SP1); and the β-amyloid precursor cleaving enzyme (BACE1). In mice, APP and Sp1 mRNA and their protein products were elevated late in life; Aβ levels declined. In monkeys, APP, Sp1, and BACE1 …
