Faculty Scholarship

Bioactivity-guided fractionation of metabolites from the crinoid Holopus rangii led to the discovery of two new phenanthroperylenequinone derivatives, gymnochromes E (1) and F (2). Gymnochrome E showed cytotoxic activity toward the NCI/ADR-Res with an IC50 of 3.5 μM. It also inhibited histone deacetylase-1 with an IC50 of 3.3 μM. Gymnochrome F was a moderate inhibitor of myeloid cell leukemia sequence 1 (MCL-1) binding to Bak. Two anthraquinone metabolites, emodic acid (4) and its new bromo derivative (5), were also isolated from the crinoid and show remarkable similarity to the phenanthroperylenequinone …

Hereditary 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D-Resistant Rickets With Alopecia Resulting From A Novel Missense Mutation In The Dna-Binding Domain Of The Vitamin D Receptor., Peter J. Malloy, Jining Wang, Tarak Srivastava, David Feldman

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The rare genetic recessive disease, hereditary vitamin D resistant rickets (HVDRR), is caused by mutations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) that result in resistance to the active hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25(OH)(2)D(3) or calcitriol). In this study, we examined the VDR from a young boy with clinical features of HVDRR including severe rickets, hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia and partial alopecia. The pattern of alopecia was very unusual with areas of total baldness, adjacent to normal hair and regions of scant hair. The child failed to improve on oral calcium and vitamin D therapy but his abnormal chemistries and his bone X-rays normalized …

A Competitive Gaussian Model And Linear Regression Technique For Modeling Mst Neuron Receptive Field Responses For Primate Perception Of Self-Motion, Jeffrey Robble Jan 2010

A Competitive Gaussian Model And Linear Regression Technique For Modeling Mst Neuron Receptive Field Responses For Primate Perception Of Self-Motion, Jeffrey Robble

Theses

This thesis presents a linear regression technique applied to non-linear features extracted from a scaled Gaussian mixture model (SGMM) to describe the receptive field (RF) behavior of neurons in the Medial Superior Temporal region of the brain of Rhesus monkeys which viewed visual stimuli on a projector screen. The stimuli consist of simple and complex combinations of planar, circular, and radial motion and neuron responses were recorded in spikes/second. It is our goal to understand the neuronal responses of the primates to these stimuli and to create a model capable of predicting how the RFs in the primates' neurons respond …

Investigation And Modeling Of Viscoelastic Moduli For Multilayered Polymeric Systems Using High Frequency Ultrasonic Waves, Todd Mathew Fernandez Jan 2010

Investigation And Modeling Of Viscoelastic Moduli For Multilayered Polymeric Systems Using High Frequency Ultrasonic Waves, Todd Mathew Fernandez

Theses

Mechanical characterization of both the bulk and individual layer properties of layered polymer stacks provides important information for their use in novel applications. A single technique to measure both the bulk and layer properties is atempted. Ultrasonic testing provides an opportunity to determine the mechanical characteristics for layered samples in the form of the complex mechanical moduli. These moduli express the viscoelastic properties of the materials. Using ultrasound, this can be done for the bulk and the layers in a single test. With ultrasound, the ability to determine the complex moduli in single layers has been demonstrated. The moduli were …

Driver Knowledge, Beliefs, And Attitudes About Deer–Vehicle Collisions In Southern Michigan, Alix Marcoux, Shawn J. Riley Jan 2010

Driver Knowledge, Beliefs, And Attitudes About Deer–Vehicle Collisions In Southern Michigan, Alix Marcoux, Shawn J. Riley

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Deer–vehicle collisions (DVCs) are one of the most frequent and costly human– wildlife conflict throughout the range of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). We conducted a self-administered, mail-back survey of Michigan drivers to determine: (1) driver attitudes and knowledge about DVCs; (2) reporting rates of DVCs; and (3) effects of being in a DVC on attitudes toward desired deer population levels. From a sample of 3,600 randomly selected licensed drivers >18 years of age in southeast Michigan, we obtained 1,653 completed questionnaires (48% response rate). Although 18% of respondents reported experiencing >1 DVC within 5 years of the survey …

Developing Germanium On Nothing (Gon) Nanowire Arrays, Paul Thomas

Theses

Advanced crystal growth techniques enable novel devices and circuit designs to further scale and integrate heterogeneous structures for CMOS, MEMS/NEMS, and optoelectronic applications. In particular, nanowires (NW) are among the promising structures derived from these developments. Research has demonstrated the utility of NWs as a channel material for gate-all-around transistors, high sensitivity biological/chemical sensors, photodetectors, as well as a whole spectrum of LEDs and lasers. However, NW based devices are not without their fabrication challenges. Relatively simple structures for CMOS or MEMS/NEMS processes are difficult to reproduce when many NW based devices rely on a dropcast process. This thesis demonstrates …

A Study Of Recent Classification Algorithms And A Novel Approach For Biosignal Data Classification, Eyup Cinar

Theses

Analyzing and understanding human biosignals have been important research areas that have many practical applications in everyday life. For example, Brain Computer Interface is a research area that studies the connection between the human brain and external systems by processing and learning the brain signals called Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Similarly, various assistive robotics applications are being developed to interpret eye or muscle signals in humans in order to provide control inputs for external devices. The efficiency for all of these applications depends heavily on being able to process and classify human biosignals. Therefore many techniques from Signal Processing and Machine …

Blending Rudists With Technology; Non-Destructive Examination Of The Internal And External Structures Of Rudists Using High Quality Scanning And Digital Imagery, Ann Molineux, Robert W. Scott, Jessie Maisano, Richard Ketcham, Louis Zachos

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Certain formations within the Cretaceous of Texas include zones of silicified rudists. Such diagenetic alteration, combined with the timing of alteration, has preserved many structural features of the rudist suitable for computed tomography (CT scanning). The excellent density differences between those skeletal structures (silica) and the internal sediment (calcitic mud) or later crystallization (calcite), fulfill a fundamental requirement for such analysis. The Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas provides access to a high resolution computed tomography scanning system. This equipment, not identical to medical scanners, provides higher resolution and sophisticated software to analyze the imagery. Several rudist …

Woman's Work: Female Lighthouse Keepers In The Early Republic, 1820–1859, Virginia Neal Thomas Jan 2010

Woman's Work: Female Lighthouse Keepers In The Early Republic, 1820–1859, Virginia Neal Thomas

History Theses & Dissertations

During the Early Republic between 1820 and 1859, women, on average, comprised about five percent of the principal lighthouse keepers in the United States. These women represent a unique exception to the experience of the majority of working women during the Early Republic. They received equal pay to men, and some supervised lower-paid male assistants. They filled these predominately male positions because lighthouse work had much in common with stereotypical woman's work, they were most often related to the previous keeper, and they fit within cultural ideals of gender roles. Inquiry beyond the romantic image crafted for these light keepers …

Ecological Assembly Of High-Diversity Plant Communities: Dispersal, Competition, And Environmental Filtering In Longleaf Pine Savannas, Jonathan Andrew Myers Jan 2010

Ecological Assembly Of High-Diversity Plant Communities: Dispersal, Competition, And Environmental Filtering In Longleaf Pine Savannas, Jonathan Andrew Myers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ecological mechanisms proposed to explain community assembly and the maintenance of biodiversity are hypothesized to fall along a theoretical continuum bounded at one extreme by deterministic processes (“niche assembly”) and at the other extreme by stochastic processes (“dispersal assembly”). In this dissertation, I explore the idea that the position of ecological communities along the niche-dispersal assembly continuum is dynamic in space and time. Using field experiments in a high-diversity longleaf pine savanna, I test the general hypothesis that “ecological filters” (competition, disturbance, and resource availability) contribute to niche assembly through their effects on established plant species and recruitment from the …

The Easy Case For Products Liability: A Response To Polinsky & Shavell, Benjamin C. Zipursky, John C.P. Goldberg

Faculty Scholarship

In their article “The Uneasy Case for Product Liability,” Professors Polinsky and Shavell assert the extraordinary claim that there should be no tort liability - none at all - for injuries caused by widely-sold products. In particular, they claim to have found convincing evidence that the threat of tort liability creates no additional incentives to safety beyond those already provided by regulatory agencies and market forces, and that tort compensation adds little or no benefit to injury victims beyond the compensation already provided by various forms of insurance. In this response, we explain that, even on its own narrow terms, …

Sensitization Of Behavioral Response To Maternal Separation: Persistence Of The Effect And Role Of Proinflammatory Activity, Jessie Caraway Jan 2010

Sensitization Of Behavioral Response To Maternal Separation: Persistence Of The Effect And Role Of Proinflammatory Activity, Jessie Caraway

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Maternal separation in guinea pigs produces a biphasic response consisting of an active behavior phase followed by a phase of passive behavior (crouched stance, piloerection, and eye closure). Previous studies suggest that pro-inflammatory cytokines mediate passive behavior during the passive phase. It is also known that guinea pig pups separated on two consecutive days show a significant increase (sensitization) in full passive behavior on the second day. The current study examined the persistence and role of pro-inflammatory activity in the sensitization of passive behavior in maternally separated guinea pigs. Guinea pig pups were assigned to one of four groups differing …

The neotropics harbor an enormous diversity of tachinid flies, yet the fauna remains poorly known. The tribe Blondeliini is particularly diverse in this region and desperately needs taxonomic attention. Here, I present a revision of the neotropical genus Erythromelana Townsend including the redescription of three previously described species and the description of 11 new species. Two species previously assigned into this genus, are resurrected as distinct genera. Erythromelana species are widely distributed from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, with the Andes being a hotspot of diversity. Erythromelana are specialized on geometrids in the genus Eois, which mainly feed on plants …

Habitat and forage selection by deer can cause local extinction of plant species. In my research, I asked: 1) How do deer population growth rates in urban parks change through time? 2) Are culling rates and deer densities correlated? 3) Are browse rates on Trillium spp. and deer densities correlated? I used FLIR deer census data from Davis Aviation and culling data from Five Rivers MetroParks (Montgomery County, Ohio). I found that deer population growth rates generally declined from 2003 to 2008. The number of deer culled was positively correlated to the deer densities. The browse rates of Trillium spp. …
