Varroa Mites And Honey Bee Health: Can Varroa Explain Part Of The Colony Losses?, Yves Le Conte, Marion D. Ellis, Wolfgang Ritter
Varroa Mites And Honey Bee Health: Can Varroa Explain Part Of The Colony Losses?, Yves Le Conte, Marion D. Ellis, Wolfgang Ritter
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Since 2006, disastrous colony losses have been reported in Europe and North America. The causes of the losses were not readily apparent and have been attributed to overwintering mortalities and to a new phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder. Most scientists agree that there is no single explanation for the extensive colony losses but that interactions between different stresses are involved. As the presence of Varroa in each colony places an important pressure on bee health, we here address the question of how Varroa contributes to the recent surge in honey bee colony losses.

Variable-Wavelength Frequency-Domain Terahertz Ellipsometry, Tino Hofmann, C. M. Herzinger, A. Boosalis, T. E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
We report an experimental setup for wavelength-tunable frequency-domain ellipsometric measurements in the terahertz spectral range from 0.2 to 1.5 THz employing a desktop-based backward wave oscillator source. The instrument allows for variable angles of incidence between 30° and 90° and operates in a polarizer-sample-rotating analyzer scheme. The backward wave oscillator source has a tunable base frequency of 107–177 GHz and is augmented with a set of Schottky diode frequency multipliers in order to extend the spectral range to 1.5 THz. We use an odd-bounce image rotation system in combination with a wire grid polarizer to prepare the input polarization state. …

A Microfluidic Method To Measure Diffusion In Hydrogels, Andrew Lee Litzenberger
A Microfluidic Method To Measure Diffusion In Hydrogels, Andrew Lee Litzenberger
Master’s Theses
A novel microfluidic method is proposed for studying diffusion of small molecules in a hydrogel. Microfluidic devices were prepared with semi-permeable microchannels defined by crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Uptake of dye molecules from aqueous solutions flowing through the microchannels was observedoptically and diffusion of the dye into the hydrogel was quantified. To complement the diffusion measurements from the microfluidic studies, nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) characterization of the diffusion of dye in the PEG hydrogels was performed. The diffusion of small molecules in a hydrogel is relevant to applications such asdrug delivery and modeling transport for tissue-engineering applications. The diffusion of small …

A Comparative Study Between China And Malaysia's Environmental Policy On Land : Implementation And Limitation., Zhang Yemo
Student Works (2010-2019)
In order to correct the political, economic, environment, social and spatial imbalance, almost all the countries have some forms of environmental policies on land and planning systems. Environmental policies and planning systems are in a more extensive application under the supervision of the environmental departments. Environmental polices play an important role in a country's overall economic development and also promotes regional development. Malaysia and China’s environmental polices are composed of many consecutive policy documents. Therefore, this work was undertaken in order to compare Malaysia and China’s environmental policy implementation specifically on land issue and to identify gaps between two countries …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Climate Change On Amphibian Populations, Andrew R. Blaustein, Susan C. Walls, Betsy A. Bancroft, Joshua J. Lawler, Catherine L. Searle, Stephanie S. Gervasi
Biology Faculty Scholarship
As part of an overall decline in biodiversity, populations of many organisms are declining and species are being lost at unprecedented rates around the world. This includes many populations and species of amphibians. Although numerous factors are affecting amphibian populations, we show potential direct and indirect effects of climate change on amphibians at the individual, population and community level. Shifts in amphibian ranges are predicted. Changes in climate may affect survival, growth, reproduction and dispersal capabilities. Moreover, climate change can alter amphibian habitats including vegetation, soil, and hydrology. Climate change can influence food availability, predator-prey relationships and competitive interactions which …

Exposure To Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (Pbdes) Suppresses The Release Of Pro-Inflammatory Products By Alveolar Macrophages In Vitro, Stephen R. Hennigar
Master's Theses and Capstones
Endocrine disrupting chemicals have adverse effects on immune function that may result in respiratory conditions. Inhalation of dust is a major route of exposure to PBDEs; however, the impact of PBDEs on the immune response is unclear. The objective of this in vitro study was to determine the impact of PBDEs on the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by activated alveolar macrophages. Porcine alveolar macrophages were grown in RPMI growth media supplemented with 10% porcine serum and incubated for 24-hours. After 24-hours, cells were activated by inoculation with PMA. In addition to PMA, different concentrations of the PBDE mixture DE-71 were …
Age And Age Structure Of An Invasive Plant, Lythrum Salicaria, Kimberly L. Therrien
Age And Age Structure Of An Invasive Plant, Lythrum Salicaria, Kimberly L. Therrien
Master's Theses and Capstones
My objective was to determine whether purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L.) individuals could be aged using the pattern of ramet production. Assuming current year loosestrife ramets produce new basal ramets only in the following year, plant age could be estimated by counting ranks of sequentially produced ramets. I found that in four New Hampshire wetlands the assumptions of the method were generally met, although some ramets were not produced sequentially. Using ramet counts I was able to estimate minimum age for individuals in each of the four populations. All populations were dominated by individuals > 1 year old. I tested whether …

The Effects Of Chlortetracycline, Lasalocid, And The Combination On Growth, Health, Apparent Total Tract Nutrient Digestibility, And Nitrogen Retention Of Post-Weaned Dairy Heifers, Kelly Anne Greenbacker
Master's Theses and Capstones
The experiment compared the effects of chlortetracycline (CTC), lasalocid (L), and the combination (LCTC) on dairy heifers. Forty calves, 12 wk of age, were assigned to control (C), L (1 mg/kg BW/d), CTC (350 mg/d), or LCTC. Individual DMI was measured daily. Skeletal measures, BW, BCS, blood urea N and glucose concentrations were measured weekly. Calves received an external marker to estimate apparent total tract nutrient digestibilities. Total collection of urine was obtained from 20 calves to determine N retention. The DMI was higher (P=0.01) for CTC versus L and C, and DMI was lower for L versus LCTC. ADG …
The Overexpression Of Homeotic Complex Gene Ultrabithorax In The Post-Embryonic Neuronal Lineages Of The Ventral Nervous System In Drosophila Melanogaster, Katie Dry
Master’s Theses
This study uses a molecular technique called MARCM (Mosaic Analysis with a Repressible Cell Marker) to label neuronal lineages that overexpress the Hox gene Ultrabithorax (Ubx) in an unlabeled, wild type background. The results indicate that the overexpression of Ubx is sufficient to transform more anterior neuronal lineages to themorphology of their more posterior counterparts. The data presented here begin to elucidate the role that the Hox genes have in shaping segment-specific neural connections in the post-embryonic ventral nervous system.
Spatial Learning And Stress Response Of Male Rats Prenatally Exposed To Dexamethasone, Joseph John Donohoe
Spatial Learning And Stress Response Of Male Rats Prenatally Exposed To Dexamethasone, Joseph John Donohoe
Master’s Theses
Dexamethasone is routinely administered to women at risk for a preterm birth in order to enhance fetal lung development and reduce uterine contractions. Research has demonstrated possible behavioral abnormalities in adulthood as a result of dexamethasone treatment. Using nonlinear mixed effects modeling, this study found thatprenatal dexamethasone treatment impaired spatial learning and memory of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Prenatal dexamethasone treatment also led to more anxiety related behaviors on Elevated Plus Maze testing 1.5 hours after a stress challenge. Because theassumptions underlying the independent samples t-test were violated, the randomization test was used to compare groups on the Elevated Plus …
A General Approach Towards The Synthesis Of Amido-Functionalized Biodegradable Polyesters, Joseph Russell
A General Approach Towards The Synthesis Of Amido-Functionalized Biodegradable Polyesters, Joseph Russell
Master’s Theses
The thesis presented here describes methodologies to produce pendant group functionalized polyesters from amido-functionalized α-hydroxy acids. The synthetic methods used to produce the functionalized α-hydroxy acids are compatible with a wide array of functional groups, making this technique highly versatile. The synthesis of functionalized polyesters was investigated to develop polymers with properties that may improve the capabilities of existing biodegradable polyesters for applications in controlled release pharmaceuticals. Chemically modified a-hydroxy acids were synthesized by reacting glyoxylic acid with a primary or secondary amide. To demonstrate the utility of this reaction, fourstructurally dissimilar amide substituents were examined including 2-pyrrolidione, benzamide, acetamide …

The Resonate-And-Fire Neuron: Time Dependent And Frequency Selective Neurons In Neural Networks, Himadri Mukhopadhyay
Master’s Theses
The means through which the nervous system perceives its environment is one of the most fascinating questions in contemporary science. Our endeavors to comprehend the principles of neural science provide an instance of how biological processes may inspire novel methods in mathematical modeling and engineering. The application ofmathematical models towards understanding neural signals and systems represents a vibrant field of research that has spanned over half a century. During this period, multiple approaches to neuronal modeling have been adopted, and each approach is adept at elucidating a specific aspect of nervous system function. Thus while bio-physical models have strived to …
Color Variation In Museum Specimens Of Birds: Effects Of Stress, Pigmentation, And Duration Of Storage, Eileen A. Kennedy
Color Variation In Museum Specimens Of Birds: Effects Of Stress, Pigmentation, And Duration Of Storage, Eileen A. Kennedy
Master’s Theses
Animal coloration often serves as a signal to others that may communicate traits about the individual such as toxicity, status, or quality. Colorful ornaments in many animals are often honest signals of quality assessed by mates, and different colors may beproduced by different biochemical pigments. Investigations of the mechanisms responsible for variation in color expression among birds are best when including a geographically and temporally broad sample. In order to obtain such a sample, studies such as this often use museum specimens; however, in order for museum specimens toserve as an accurate replacement, they must accurately represent living birds, or …
Effects Of Prenatal Dexamethasone On Hipopcampal Serotonin 1a Receptors In Adult Male Rats, Rahul Vijay
Effects Of Prenatal Dexamethasone On Hipopcampal Serotonin 1a Receptors In Adult Male Rats, Rahul Vijay
Master’s Theses
The main activation route for the stress response is the hypothalamo-pituitaryadrenal axis (HPA) and the sympatho-adrenomedullary system. The HPA axis is a neuroendocrine feedback loop mediated by an array of tissue specific hormones, receptors and neurotransmitters that regulate glucocorticoid (GC) release. GCs are steroidal hormones produced by the adrenal glands and are key players in a negativefeedback loop controlling HPA activity. They influence the HPA axis through glucocorticoid receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary and through both glucocorticoid (GR) and mineralcorticoid receptors (MR) that are co-localized in the hippocampus. Repeated or chronic stress exerts a negative influence on these HPA …

With advances in medical imaging scanners, it has become commonplace to generate large multidimensional datasets. These datasets require tools for a rapid, thorough analysis. To address this need, we have developed an automated algorithm for morphometric analysis incorporating A Visualization Workshop computational and image processing libraries for three-dimensional segmentation, vascular tree generation and structural hierarchical ordering with a two-stage numeric optimization procedure for estimating vessel diameters. We combine this new technique with our mathematical models of pulmonary vascular morphology to quantify structural and functional attributes of lung arterial trees. Our physiological studies require repeated measurements of vascular structure to determine …

Webs In Vitro And In Vivo: Spiders Alter Their Orb-Web Spinning Behavior In The Laboratory, Andrew Sensenig, Ingi Agnarsson, Taylor M. Gondek, Todd A. Blackledge
Biology Faculty Research
Many studies of the elegant architectures of orb webs are conducted in controlled laboratory environments that remove environmental variability. The degree to which spider behavior in these circumstances resembles that of spiders in the wild is largely unknown. We compared web architecture and silk investment of furrowed orb weavers Larinioides corium's (Clerck 1757) building webs in laboratory cages and spinning webs on fences in the field and found significant differences. The volume of major ampullate silk in radii was 53% lower in cage webs, primarily because the silk was 50% thinner, but also because spiders tended to spin 14% fewer …

It is known that the body can efficiently repair hard tissue (bone) micro fractures by suturing the defect through the deposition of minerals resulting in an area that is stronger post-injury. Larger defects, however, generally cause more trouble since the body is incapable of repairing them. Bone defects can occur as a result of congenital abnormalities, trauma, or disease. Traditional methods for addressing these defects have involved the use of acellular cadaverous bone or autologous bone. Both contain innate problems associated with them; the former method can result in disease transmission, as well as very low integration with the host …
Multidisciplinary Collaborative Model For Complex, Angel Ernesto Delgado
Multidisciplinary Collaborative Model For Complex, Angel Ernesto Delgado
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Nowadays, most devices with advanced technology require the development of embedded systems with mechanical and electrical components as well as software including more than one discipline. These are devices that are usually complex in terms of composition and functionality and that design must follow a methodology in order to successfully design and launch a device of this nature. Hence, the assembly of a multidisciplinary engineering group is required to carry out such complex devices and develop a fully functional product. The group may also need an expert on the field that can provide guidance and knowledge where needed. This is …
Causation And Circularity In Dispositionalism, Daniel Jacob Flores
Causation And Circularity In Dispositionalism, Daniel Jacob Flores
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
I wish to present a narrow discussion of Bird's and Mumford's basic positions on their versions of dispositionalism. I think that they are correct to point to the threat of circularity and regress but I do not believe that they have successfully argued away the problem. I begin by offering a very brief account of dispositions and three general criticisms. The goal is to show that causation is central to a satisfactory account of dispositionalism. Next, I outline Mumford's and then Bird's general positions on dispositions. What this will show is the importance of the regress/circularity objection. Both philosophers understand …
Evaluating The Role Of Evolutionarily Conserved Regions Of Ledgf/P75 In Hiv-1 Infection, Jose Adrian Garcia
Evaluating The Role Of Evolutionarily Conserved Regions Of Ledgf/P75 In Hiv-1 Infection, Jose Adrian Garcia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
LEDGF/p75 is an important cellular co-factor for lentiviral integration. LEDGF/p75-deficient cells are markedly resistant to HIV-1 infection and re-expression of the wild type protein rescues infectivity. Although the molecular mechanism of LEDGF/p75 in HIV-1 integration is not yet known, this co-factor activity requires the interaction of LEDGF/p75 with both the host chromatin and viral integrase. In order to evaluate the involvement of other LEDGF/p75 regions in HIV-1 infection we constructed a panel of deletion mutants targeting clusters of charged residues that are evolutionarily conserved and predicted to be post-translationally modified. These mutants were evaluated for their ability to rescue HIV-1 …
Synthesis And Self-Assembly Of Novel Amphiphilic Cisplatin Analogues, Gabriel Angel Gonzalez
Synthesis And Self-Assembly Of Novel Amphiphilic Cisplatin Analogues, Gabriel Angel Gonzalez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The discovery of cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II)) is regarded as a medical revolution in cancer therapy. Following studies have shown activity against cancers of the head, lung, ovarian, testicular, and cervical. The reaction mechanism of cisplatin is established on the intrastrand cross linking by the formation of covalent bonds with the N7 of the purine bases which causes an irregular effect impeding the normal transcription and DNA replication mechanisms of the cell. Only cisplatin and carboplatin (cis-diamimine-1,1'-cyclobutane dicarboxylate platinum) are clinically used as antitumor agents today. Carboplatin is an analogue of cisplatin and is used more often because it has a reduced …
Ganglioside-Cytokine Interaction In The Induction Of Primary Brain Cell Death, John Charles Gorbet
Ganglioside-Cytokine Interaction In The Induction Of Primary Brain Cell Death, John Charles Gorbet
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Gangliosides have been implicated in multiple pathologies affecting the central nervous system (CNS) and recent research has implicated them in playing an active role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Empirical studies and theoretical considerations have suggested the possibility of interactions between gangliosides, like GD3, and pro-inflammatory cytokines present in the nervous system. This study sought to investigate the possibility that either individual gangliosides acting alone or complexed with other species interact with the known immune response factor TNF&alpha to initiate or facilitate cell death in the CNS. I examined the cellular viability and gene expression in primary brain cell …

This work addresses the development of an automated multiple material fluid handling and leveling system for its implementation into a Multiple-Material Stereolithography (MMSL) apparatus. A patent filed by Wicker et al. (US Patent 7,556,490) disclosing a MMSL apparatus served as the basis for the development of this work. The system is designed to operate in a variety of MMSL apparatus configurations. Fluid vats are designed to meet the enclosure constraints, facilitate the interface to the pump and sensor, and support the handling of the fluids. Due to its fluid isolation and bi-directional flow capabilities, a digital drive peristaltic pump is …

Ecology And Genetics Of Philodina Megalotrocha (Rotifera, Bdelloidea) From Chihuahuan Desert Populations, Lina Kamel Hamdan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Chihuahuan Desert is a unique region with high biodiversity. There is a high degree endemism of freshwater biota, but relatively few studies have been focused on zooplankton. Bdelloid rotifers are one component of these ecosystems and often dominate very temporary habitats. Bdelloids are usually assumed to be cosmopolitan species due to their potentially high dispersal rates. Distribution records of the bdelloid P. megalotrocha extend from North America to New Zealand. However, little is known about its ecology or genetics. The aims of this study are to: 1) determine whether the distribution of P. megalotrocha in the Chihuahuan Desert is …
