Serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) level is used for prediction of cancer, but this approach suffers from weak sensitivity and specificity. We applied binary-split decision tree (DT) algorithm to prostate cancer prediction problem. Materials and methods: Quick, Unbiased and Efficient Statistical Tree (QUEST) algorithm was used in 750 patients who had a serum PSA levels between 0 and 10 ng/mL. Results: The analysis indicated that following five nodes had different levels of cancer possibility: (1) PSA > 5.98 ng/mL; (2) PSA 0.81; (4) PSA Keywords:

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), non-tuberculosis pulmonary disease (non-PTB) and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: Serum ADA activity was measured using the Giusti and Galanti method, and the total antioxidant capacity of plasma was determined by the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) test. Results: The serum ADA levels were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in pulmonary TB (PTB, 19.78 ± 7.09 U/L), as well as in non-PTB patients (14.78 ± 4.65 U/L) when compared to healthy controls (10.02 ± 1.99 U/L). The sensitivity and specificity were found to be 71.7% and 63.3%, respectively, in distinguishing PTB from non-PTB. In distinguishing PTB from healthy subjects, the sensitivity and specificity were 87% and 93.3%, respectively. The TAC was significantly lower in PTB (485.2 ± 190.0 µM) and non-PTB patients (588.3 ± 195.8 µM), when compared to the controls (784.3 ± 190.0 µM; P < 0.001). Plasma antioxidative activity decreased in PTB and non-PTB patients when compared to the controls. Conclusion: We concluded that serum ADA activity is not a useful test to differentiate pulmonary TB from other respiratory diseases. The TAC is low in pulmonary TB, therefore supplementation with a suitable anti-oxidant may be useful.

Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) triggers synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide (O_2^{.-}). O_2^{.-} can react with NO to produce the powerful oxidant peroxynitrite (ONOO-). The presence of 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in tissues is often used as a marker of ONOO- production. Vitamin A, vitamin C, and melatonin are potent antioxidant molecules. We sought to clarify this issue by examining the effects of vitamin A (15,000 IU/kg/day), vitamin C (600 mg/kg/day), and melatonin (25 mg/kg) on 3-NT formation in heart tissue in a guinea pig model of LPS-induced endotoxemia. Materials and methods: A total of 75 animals were randomly divided into 5 …

Inflammatory and immune cells, such as eosinophils, macrophages, and neutrophils, generate more reactive oxygen species in patients with asthma than they do in healthy individuals, and oxygen radicals contribute to tissue injury in asthma. We aimed to measure total oxidant status (TOS) and antioxidant status (TAS) in order to assess oxidative and antioxidative capacity. Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE, and eosinophils (%) were measured to evaluate the level of inflammation. Materials and methods: The study included 56 non-smoking asthma patients that were followed-up at the respiratory disease and allergy outpatient clinics, where they received ongoing treatment for 5 months …

Several studies have reported the importance of dermatoglyphics as markers of a prenatal disturbance in patients with schizophrenia. Due to the fact that finger- and handprints are formed by the end of the second trimester, they may provide clues to disturbances in early development. The aim of this study was to determine specific dermatoglyphical frequencies in a sample of patients with schizophrenia and normal controls. Materials and methods: Fingerprints and palm prints were obtained from 45 schizophrenic patients as well as 45 healthy controls. The dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers (total finger ridge count [TFRC]) and palms (a-b, b-c, and …

In Search Of A Method: Charles Sanders Peirce’S Contribution To Theology, Donald Gelpi, Nate Hinerman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article asserts that when one re-grounds the approach to the theological method of Catholic Theologian, Bernard Lonergan, S.J., in the pragmatistic logic and semiotic realism of Charles Sanders Peirce, then Lonergan's theory of functional specialties gives the promise of enabling one to describe how various types of theological inquiry relate to other scholarly disciplines through the criteria of agreement, convergence, complementarity, and disagreement.

Less polemical authors have published useful overviews of scholarship and institutional development in family business (Chrisman, Kellermanns, Chan, & Liano, 2010; Heck, Hoy, Poutziouris, & Steier, 2008; Schulze & Gedajlovic, 2010; Sharma, 2004). I take this as license for hyperbole. In such a vein, I am skeptical eight times over: that the field can be objective, that it can be defined, that “family business” is the right label, that it will find useful theories, that kinship exists, that if it does exist (all right, I do believe it does) we really observe it in action, that the field can progress …

Organic tobacco is a new industrial crop. Field experiments were conducted, during 2005-2006, to determine the effects of irrigation system and green manure on weed flora in organic tobacco crops (Nicotiana tabacum cv. NC 71). The experiments were designed as a split plot design with 4 replicates, 2 main plots (drip and sprinkler irrigation), and 3 sub-plots (vetch and red clover as green manure, and control). The greatest number and dry weight of weeds was observed in sprinkler irrigation. Our results indicate that weed distribution under drip and sprinkler irrigation is related not only to the surface soil water content …

The United States has a passionate love-hate relationship with water. Americans love to live beside rivers and lakes and use them for drinking water, washing, fishing, generating power, navigating, and recreation. They also love to be able to use water from rivers, lakes, and the ground beneath their property to irrigate their crops. When it's too dry, they pray for rain. But when it's too wet, they beg for sunshine, because as much as they love living as close to the water as they can get, people hate having their homes, workplaces, and crops inundated by floodwater even more. Besides …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Background
Currently, natural and synthetic scaffolds are being explored as augmentation devices for rotator cuff repair. When used in this manner, these devices are believed to offer some degree of load sharing; however, no studies have quantified this effect. Furthermore, the manner in which loads on an augmented rotator cuff repair are distributed among the various components of the repair is not known, nor is the relative biomechanical importance of each component. The objectives of this study are to (1) develop quasi-static analytical models of simplified rotator cuff repairs, (2) validate the models, and (3) predict the degree of load …

Kinship caregivers-a group disproportionately populated by persons of color, particularly black grandmothers -have historically assumed parental roles, often together with a legal parent. Yet even as kin have increasingly assumed substantial parental responsibilities over the past few decades, they continue to have limited opportunities to carry the title of legal parent. At the same time, in claims involving stepfamilies and same sex partners of parents, and cases involving assisted reproductive technology (ART), family courts have expanded their definition of parenthood to recognize the rights of other caregivers, including those whose parental claims extend beyond the so-called "rule of two."2 The …
