Population Trends In Northern Spotted Owls: Associations With Climate In The Pacific Northwest, Elizabeth M. Glenn, Robert G. Anthony, Eric D. Forsman Jan 2010

Population Trends In Northern Spotted Owls: Associations With Climate In The Pacific Northwest, Elizabeth M. Glenn, Robert G. Anthony, Eric D. Forsman

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We used reverse time capture-mark-recapture models to describe associations between rate of population change (λ) and climate for northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) at six long-term study areas in Washington and Oregon, USA. Populations in three of six areas showed strong evidence of declining populations, while populations in two additional areas were likely declining as well. At four areas, λ was positively associated with wetter-than-normal conditions during the growing season, which likely affects prey availability. Lambda was also negatively associated with cold, wet winters and nesting seasons, and the number of hot summer days. The …

Trail Pheromone Disruption Of Argentine Ant Trail Formation And Foraging, David Maxwell Suckling, Robert W. Peck, Lloyd D. Stringer, Kirsten Snook, Paul C. Banko Jan 2010

Trail Pheromone Disruption Of Argentine Ant Trail Formation And Foraging, David Maxwell Suckling, Robert W. Peck, Lloyd D. Stringer, Kirsten Snook, Paul C. Banko

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Trail pheromone disruption of invasive ants is a novel tactic that builds on the development of pheromonebased pest management in other insects. Argentine ant trail pheromone, (Z)-9-hexadecenal, was formulated as a microencapsulated sprayable particle and applied against Argentine ant populations in 400 m2 field plots in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. A widely dispersed point source strategy for trail pheromone disruption was used. Traffic rates of ants in bioassays of treated filter paper, protected from rainfall and sunlight, indicated the presence of behaviorally significant quantities of pheromone being released from the formulation for up to 59 days. The …

Apparent Survival Of Breeding Western Sandpipers On The Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, Alaska, Matthew Johnson, Daniel R. Ruthrauff, Brian J. Mccaffery, Susan M. Haig, Jeffrey R. Walters Jan 2010

Apparent Survival Of Breeding Western Sandpipers On The Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, Alaska, Matthew Johnson, Daniel R. Ruthrauff, Brian J. Mccaffery, Susan M. Haig, Jeffrey R. Walters

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We used 8 years of live recapture data (1998–2005) to estimate apparent annual survival for male (n = 237) and female (n = 296) Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) breeding on a 36-ha plot on the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta, western Alaska. Apparent annual survival (Φ) is the product of true survival and site fidelity, and estimates of Φ were corrected for the probability of encounter. Overall return rates (individual returned to the study site in a subsequent season) were lower for females (40%) than males (65%), as was Φ (± SE, females = 0.65 ± 0.05, males = 0.78 …

Sustainable Mountain Tourism Development Illustrated In The Case Of Switzerland, Benedikt Schorner Jan 2010

Sustainable Mountain Tourism Development Illustrated In The Case Of Switzerland, Benedikt Schorner

SPNHA Review

The concept of sustainable mountain tourism development meets the needs of the present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for future generations (WTO, 2001). The principles of sustainable tourism development are composed of environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects. In order to be successful in the long-term, an equilibrium among these three dimensions must be established (Samy & El-Barmelgy, 2005). The Swiss Federal Council established a general framework for its Sustainable Development Strategy 2000, which is used in this paper to show successful policymaking in this area. Furthermore, policy priorities, recommendations, challenges, and successful strategies for sustainable mountain …

Increasing Student-Teacher Interactions At An Urban Commuter Campus Through Instant Messaging And Online Office Hours, Nathan H. Lents, Oscar E. Cifuentes Jan 2010

Increasing Student-Teacher Interactions At An Urban Commuter Campus Through Instant Messaging And Online Office Hours, Nathan H. Lents, Oscar E. Cifuentes

Publications and Research

Encouraging first year undergraduate students in large lecture-hall classes to seek out and actively engage their professors is a perennial problem in science education. This problem is especially acute for commuter and minority populations. Thus, because personal relationships between students and professors are well known to promote student learning and academic success, fostering new ways to connect students and faculty is essential for reducing attrition at inner-city colleges. In the current study, we demonstrate that the use of instant messaging (IM) is highly effective in fostering student-teacher interactions in the lecture-hall setting of an introductory major-level biology course at John …

Diel Fish Habitat Selection In A Tributary Stream, Andria K. Salas, Eric B. Snyder Jan 2010

Diel Fish Habitat Selection In A Tributary Stream, Andria K. Salas, Eric B. Snyder

Peer Reviewed Publications

This study investigated the location and diel habitat preferences (at 100 m reach scale) of fish in a small tributary stream in late spring, early summer. During the day, coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) preferred areas with more cover (deeper, greater extent of undercut banks) vs. night when LWD was preferred (Pearson correlation and step-wise MLR). Chinook (O. tshawytscha) exhibited an opposite pattern, preferring LWD during the day vs. higher velocity at night. This suggests these two potadromous species may be partitioning resources. Pooling coho, chinook and rainbow trout (O. mykiss) indicated reaches with more LWD …

A Biological Algorithm For Data Reconstruction, Daniel J. Cross Jan 2010

A Biological Algorithm For Data Reconstruction, Daniel J. Cross

Physics Faculty Scholarship

An algorithm inspired by Genome sequencing is proposed which “reconstructs” a single long trajectory of a dynamical system from many short trajectories. This procedure is useful in situations when many data sets are available but each is insufficiently long to apply a meaningful analysis directly. The algorithm is applied to the Rössler and Lorenz dynamical systems as well as to experimental data taken from the Belousov-Zhabotinskii chemical reaction. Topological information was reliably extracted from each system and geometrical and dynamical measures were computed.

Hydrodynamic Irreversibility In Particle Suspensions With Nonuniform Strain, J. S. Guasto, A. S. Ross, Jerry P. Gollub Jan 2010

Hydrodynamic Irreversibility In Particle Suspensions With Nonuniform Strain, J. S. Guasto, A. S. Ross, Jerry P. Gollub

Physics Faculty Scholarship

A dynamical phase transition from reversible to irreversible behavior occurs when particle suspensions are subjected to uniform oscillatory shear, even in the Stokes flow limit. We consider a more general situation with nonuniform strain (e.g., oscillatory channel flow), which is observed to exhibit markedly different dynamics. The onset of irreversibility is delayed, and occurs simultaneously across the entire channel. This behavior is only partially explained by self-organization and shear-induced migration. The onset is accompanied by long-range correlated particle motion even at the channel center, where the strain is negligible; this motion prevents the system from evolving into a reversible state.

Approaches Towards The Synthesis Of Bradyoxetin, Vanildo Martins Lima Braga Jan 2010

Approaches Towards The Synthesis Of Bradyoxetin, Vanildo Martins Lima Braga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quorum sensing bacteria produce and release chemical signal molecules (like N-acyl homoserine lactones, AHL) that increase in concentration as a function of cell density. The responses cover a large spectrum of process such as the virulence in Staphylococcus aureus, competence for DNA-uptake in Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus pneumoniae, sporulation in Bacillus subtilis, conjugal plasmid transfer in Enterococcus faecalis, and bacteriocin production in lactic acid bacteria. The collapse of (AHL) signaling system in bacteria represents an attractive therapeutic approach towards the development of new antibiotics. Recently, a new extracellular modulator was isolated from a symbiotic bacterium (Bradyrhizobium japonicum) that nodulates soybean. …

The Fungal Connection: Characterizing The Ectomycorrhizal Community And Belowground Response To Restoration Treatments In Northern Mississippi., Ashley Jane Craig Jan 2010

The Fungal Connection: Characterizing The Ectomycorrhizal Community And Belowground Response To Restoration Treatments In Northern Mississippi., Ashley Jane Craig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi are symbionts on the roots of woody plant species throughout the world. These fungi provide plants with nutrients and are important drivers of ecosystem processes. ECM fungi vary in their effect on host plants and host-specificity, making them important considerations in restoration projects seeking to restore target tree species. Restoration strategies such as burning and thinning may have strong impacts on ECM fungi, and given the that ECM are important in structuring aboveground communities and maintaining certain dominant plant taxa, knowledge of ECM fungal response is needed to ensure restoration efforts succeed. Using molecular methods, this research …

Differences In Bone Mineral Density Among Adolescent Female Tennis Players And Non-Tennis Players, Kevser Ermin Jan 2010

Differences In Bone Mineral Density Among Adolescent Female Tennis Players And Non-Tennis Players, Kevser Ermin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis. Physical activity (PA) is an important step in preventing osteoporosis and is one of the major determinants of peak bone mass during adolescence. However, type of pa plays an important role when examining the effects of pa on bone mineral density (BMD). Purpose: 1) to determine the differences in BMD among adolescent female tennis players (TP) and non-tennis players (NTP); 2) to determine the differences in body composition (BC) between adolescent female TP and NTP; 3) to determine whether BC variables (weight, fat mass, and lean mass) were predictive of differences in BMD; and …

The Effects Of Ecological Restoration On Soil Microbial Enzyme Activities And Leaf Litter Decomposition, Anthony Jason Rietl Jan 2010

The Effects Of Ecological Restoration On Soil Microbial Enzyme Activities And Leaf Litter Decomposition, Anthony Jason Rietl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the immediate effects of ecological restoration on soil enzyme activities and decomposition. The activities of five enzymes: phosphatase, ?-glucosidase, ?-N-acetylglucosadminidase (NAGase), phenol oxidase, and lignin-peroxidase were measured in both soils and on decomposing Quercus falcata leaf litter in unburned, burned, and burned and thinned plots in a mesic forest in northern Mississippi. Rates of decomposition were also assessed for Q. falcata leaf litter at each plot. The restoration treatments decreased phosphatase activity in relation to an increase in soil organic matter after the fire, and increased NAGase activity in relation to a decrease in leaf litter after …

The Crescent And The Cross: Islamic Influence In Southern Culture, Jesse Wright Jan 2010

The Crescent And The Cross: Islamic Influence In Southern Culture, Jesse Wright

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To a large degree, America has adopted African American culture as its own. One may hear and see African American influence in popular music, grammar, fashion and art, but rarely are the sources of these influences divined, in no small part to difficulties inherent in interdisciplinary studies. This thesis will examine the Islamic aesthetics in African American quilts. This work focuses on design and color elements and I trace Islamic influence from West Africa to the U.S. South by way of the slave trade. The original scholarship comes from in the Mississippi Delta, although this thesis also uses quilt books …

Disestablishing The Family, Alice Ristroph, Melissa Murray Jan 2010

Disestablishing The Family, Alice Ristroph, Melissa Murray

Faculty Articles

This Feature explores what it would mean to disestablish the family. It examines a particular theory of religious disestablishment, one that emphasizes institutional pluralism and the importance of competing sources of authority, and argues that this model of church-state relationships has much to teach us about family-state relationships. Though substantial rights to what might be called "free exercise of the family" have been recognized in American constitutional doctrine, at present there is no parallel principle of familial disestablishment. The state is free to regulate families qua families, and to encourage or discourage certain kinds of familial relationships. This Feature suggests …

Relative Doubt: Familial Searches Of Dna Databases, Erin E. Murphy Jan 2010

Relative Doubt: Familial Searches Of Dna Databases, Erin E. Murphy

Faculty Articles

The continued growth of forensic DNA databases has brought about greater interest in a search method known as 'familial" or "kinship" matching. Whereas a typical database search seeks the source of a crime-scene stain by making an exact match between a known person and the DNA sample, familial searching instead looks for partial matches in order to find potential relatives of the source. The use of a familial DNA search to identify the alleged "Grim Sleeper" killer in California brought national attention to the method, which has many proponents. In contrast, this Article argues against the practice of familial searching …
