On The Qualitative Analysis Of The Uniqueness Of The Movement Of Endothelial Cells, Erdem Altuntaç, Serdal Pamuk

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper extends the work of Pamuk (2003) by showing mathematically that the movement of endothelial cells, to the regions where active enzyme is large or where fibronectin is small, is unique. To do this, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of the steady-state solution of an initial-boundary value problem which mathematically models endothelial cell movement in tumor angiogenesis. A specific example showing the instability of this steady-state solution is provided.

Artificial Intelligence: Robots, Avatars And The Demise Of The Human Mediator, David Allen Larson

Faculty Scholarship

As technology has advanced, many have wondered whether (or simply when) artificial intelligent devices will replace the humans who perform complex, interactive, interpersonal tasks such as dispute resolution. Has science now progressed to the point that artificial intelligence devices can replace human mediators, arbitrators, dispute resolvers and problem solvers? Can humanoid robots, attractive avatars and other relational agents create the requisite level of trust and elicit the truthful, perhaps intimate or painful, disclosures often necessary to resolve a dispute or solve a problem? This article will explore these questions. Regardless of whether the reader is convinced that the demise of …

Crossing The ‘Uncanny Valley’: Adaptation To Cartoon Faces Can Influence Perception Of Human Faces, Haiwen Chen, Richard Russell, Ken Nakayama, Margaret Livingstone Jan 2010

Crossing The ‘Uncanny Valley’: Adaptation To Cartoon Faces Can Influence Perception Of Human Faces, Haiwen Chen, Richard Russell, Ken Nakayama, Margaret Livingstone

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this study we assessed whether there is a single face space common to both human and cartoon faces by testing whether adaptation to cartoon faces can affect perception of human faces. Participants were shown Japanese animation cartoon videos containing faces with abnormally large eyes. The use of animated videos eliminated the possibility of position-dependent retinotopic adaptation (because the faces appear at many different locations) and more closely simulated naturalistic exposure. Adaptation to cartoon faces with large eyes significantly shifted preferences for human faces toward larger eyes, consistent with a common, non-retinotopic representation for both cartoon and human faces. This …

Inequitable Sentencing For Possession Of Child Pornography: A Failure To Distinguish Voyeurs From Pederasts, Jesse P. Basbaum

UC Law Journal

This Note identifies several infirmities of United States Sentencing Guideline section 2 G2.2, the sentencing scheme for possession of child pornography. The production and web-based dissemination of child pornography images has increased substantially over the past decade. The Department of Justice has aggressively prosecuted these crimes under the rationale that (r) possession of child pornography leads to contact offenses, (2) demand drives supply, and (3) the mere availability of an image or video constitutes continued and indirect abuse of the child depicted. In light of these and other concerns, Congress has enacted dramatic increases in the potential sentences for possessors …

Public Opinion, Cultural Change, And Constitutional Adjudication, Calvin Massey

UC Law Journal

When do courts pay attention to public opinion in deciding constitutional issues? When should courts do so? This Article provides a limited answer to those questions. Courts often pay attention to public opinion when deciding constitutional issues, especially when the issue is one that involves a challenge to a long-standing cultural norm. That pattern is present, for example, in each of Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education. The Court changed its view of equal protection because public opinion about racial segregation changed. Today, the long-standing cultural understanding of marriage is challenged by those who claim that its …
