Depression is a common mental health problem among adolescents. Depressive symptoms are also important and may appear even during the preschool period. Physical activity, which may improve some mental health problems, is inversely associated with depression. Psychological Characteristics Of Adolescent Suicide Attempters Presenting To A Pediatric Emergency Service, Di̇lek Di̇lli̇, Yildiz Dallar, İlyas Çakir

To determine the sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of adolescents who attempt suicide and evaluate them by different scales. Materials and methods: The study was conducted with 116 adolescent suicide attempters and 98 age-matched healthy controls. Results: The mean age of all adolescents was 13.8 ± 1.2 years, with ages ranging from 11 to 16 years. Of these adolescents, 82.7% were girls. The total Suicide Probability Scale score was negatively correlated with the total Reasons for Living Inventory (r = -0.42, P = 0.001) and positively correlated with the Problem Solving Inventory score, which is indicative of low problem-solving capabilities (r …

To evaluate the effect of caustic esophageal injury (CEI) on the number of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). Materials and methods: Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: control, acid, and alkali induced CEI. CEI was performed by the injection of 1 mL of 10% hypochloric acid in the acid group, and 1 mL of 10% sodium hydroxide was injected into the alkali group. Distal esophageal segments were removed 24 h after injection. CEI was graded and the number of ICC were investigated (CD-117 staining). Home injuries are a serious public health problem for the elderly. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of home injuries among elderly people in Samsun, Turkey, and the influencing factors. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1 January and 28 February 2007. A questionnaire, the Home-Screen Scale (HSS), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were administered to the elderly subjects. Results: Of all participants, 20.6% had experienced some kind of home injury. Seven participants living alone and 14 living with their families had suffered home injuries, suggesting a statistically significant difference between these 2 groups (P < 0.05). Eleven (14.7%) subjects living in secure housing and 10 (37.0%) living in unsecure housing had suffered home injuries, the difference again being statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Home injuries are more common among people living alone and in unsecure housing according to the HSS.

The aim of this study was to evaluate influences of hormonal changes during rat estrous cycle on airway responsiveness to bronchoconstrictor and bronchodilator agents. Materials and methods: The study was performed in 5 groups of rat tracheal smooth muscle obtained during proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and diestrus phases of the estrous cycle, as well as the ovariectomized group (n:8/group). The objective of this study was to determine the interactions between alfalfa hay and corn grain particle sizes on nutrient intake, milk yield, milk composition, chewing activity, and ruminal pH of dairy cows. Alfalfa hay was chopped either at 4 cm (long; L) or 1 cm (short; S) theoretical length of cut. In this study, the effects of \beta-glucan administration at different dosages on non-specific immune response and haematological parameters in healthy Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) were investigated. Fish were fed with diets containing 0.5% and 0.1% glucan (experiment) and without glucan (control) for 2 weeks. A Case Study Of The Clinical Form Of Johne’S Disease In A Heifer, Agnieszka Wiszniewsk Laszczych, Joanna Szteyn, Aleksandra Ruszczynska

Johne's disease-paratuberculosis-affects domesticated and wild ruminants throughout the world. The first symptoms of the disease appear 6 months to 15 years after infection. The clinical stage of paratuberculosis usually occurs in older animals and is rare in those under 2 years of age. While performing analyses on a farm in the northeastern region of Poland a 2-year-old heifer that manifested symptoms of dyspepsia, proceeding with watery diarrhea, was observed. ELISA test (IDEXX) results demonstrated a positive serological reaction for paratuberculosis. Clinical examination, microbiological analysis of feces, autopsy, and histopathological examination confirmed the incidence of Johne's disease in the heifer.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of parenteral administration of L-carnitine on some biochemical parameters in Halep (Damascus) goats during the last month of pregnancy. L-carnitine was administrated to goats in group I (n = 13) by subcutaneous injections once a week during the last month of the pregnancy. Physiologic salt solution was administered to goats in group II (n = 12) by the same route during the same period. Differences of glucose concentration between groups were not significant (P > 0.05). Biologic Parameters Of Polar Fox (Alopex Lagopus L.) Semen During The Breeding Season, Karolina Stasiak, Bogdan Janicki, Bogumila Kupcewicz

The aim of this work was to evaluate the biologic properties of polar fox (Alopex lagopus L.) semen collected during the reproductive season. In 126 ejaculates manually collected from 18 foxes at 10- to 12-day intervals, semen parameters (such as the sperm concentration, volume, pH, sperm morphology, and activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase) were determined. The seminal plasma acid and alkaline phosphatase activity correlated positively with the sperm concentration (r = 0.5676; r = 0.6302; P < 0.01) and negatively with the ejaculate volume (r = -0.3456; r = -0.2783, P < 0.01). A significant correlation also existed between acid and alkaline phosphatase activity (r = 0.7043, P < 0.01).

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology and/or progression of a number of diseases and aging. In this cross-sectional study, some oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde [MDA] as a lipid peroxidation biomarker, ferric reducing/antioxidant power [FRAP], and total nonprotein SH groups) in plasma samples of Shaal ewes of different age groups were assessed. For all 3 measured parameters, the youngest age group (10-30 months old) had the lowest amounts. Although FRAP levels increased slightly and age dependently, nonprotein SH group content showed a decreasing trend after a peak in the 31-50 months group. The plasma concentration of long-acting oxytetracycline (OTC-LA) was measured following a single intramuscular (IM) injection (50 mg/kg) in grouper (Epinephelus marginatus), a common inhabitant of marine aquaria and a potential candidate for fish farming. The experiment was carried out at 20 °C and sampling points were selected at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, and 48 h post-administration. The present study aimed to determine P-glycoprotein expression according to TVT cell morphology in 42 dogs with confirmed TVT, classified into lymphocytoid, plasmocytoid, and mixed. The chemotherapy efficiency was investigated along with its relation to P-glycoprotein expression in tumoral cells, evaluated by immunocytochemistry, considering positive tumors more than 10% stained. Among the samples collected, 50.00% possessed plasmocytoid morphology, 18.63% lymphocytoid, and 31.37% mixed. The plasmocytoid presented greater immunoreactivity to the anti-P-glycoprotein antibody in relation to the lymphocytoid. It was observed that the plasmocytoid was less sensitive to chemotherapy. Females of some Stenopogon species were compared both systematically and phylogenetically utilizing spermatheca morphology. The spermathecae of 8 species and 2 subspecies of Stenopogon (S. coracinus, S. elongatus S. flavibarbis, S. junceus, S. laevigatus, S. nigriventris, S. schisticolor, S. strateagus, S. sabaudus harpax, and S. xanthotrichus xanthomelas) were examined using a scanning electron microscope and subsequently analyzed with cluster analysis. The species of Gugolzia (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae) in Europe and Turkey were reviewed, and an identification key for differentiating the species is provided. Newly discovered diagnostic characters of the genus were added to the diagnoses given by earlier authors. Species were recorded as parasitoids of phytophagous Eurytomidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea). Data are given on the distribution of 40 species belonging to the subfamilies Exoristinae and Tachininae that were collected by the first author in Fars province, Iran, during 2006-2007. In all, 22 species were recorded for the first time from Iran and 34 species from Fars province. Erynniopsis antennata (Rondani, 1861) was reared for the first time on the host Diorhabda elongate (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Between April 2007 and October 2008 we collected 1995 horse mackerel specimens from the territorial waters of the Bulgarian Black Sea. Age, length, and weight of these specimens were determined to estimate length-weight relationships and age composition. The present study utilized otolith characterization to determine age. The sex ratio was 1:1.36686 (M:F). The prevalent age classes were 2+, 3+, and 4+. The exponent b of equation resulted in the value 3.3046, which indicates that the weight growth is positive allometric. The distribution of C-heterochromatin blocks and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the Taurus ground squirrel from Turkey was studied. The karyotype of Spermophilus taurensis comprised 40 chromosomes, the fundamental chromosome number (NF) was 80, and there were 76 autosomal arms (NFa). All autosomes and the X chromosome had pericentromeric C-heterochromatin, whereas the Y chromosome appeared to be entirely heterochromatic. NORs were observed in the terminal regions of the short arm of 2 pairs of submetacentric and 2 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. All the NORs were homomorphic and of medium size. The karyotype of Pseudophoxinus antalyae was analyzed using G-banding, C-banding, Ag-NOR staining, and Q-banding. Chromosome analysis of this species, which lives in the Berdan River and Berdan Dam Lake, was performed with the air-drying technique, using gill and fin epithelium cells. The diploid chromosome number of P. antalyae was determined to be 2n = 50, comprising 16 metacentric, 14 submetacentric, 12 subtelocentric, and 8 acrocentric (NF = 92) chromosomes. Notes On Some Egyptian Lacertidae, Including A New Subspecies Of Mesalina, Involving The Seligmann Effect, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Shoshana Ashkenazi

These notes on some Egyptian lacertid lizards contribute to faunal data for the planning of biodiversity conservation. Mesalina bahaeldini curatorum n. subsp. is described from Suez, characterized by coloration and larger (fewer) body scales. Range extensions are documented for Acanthodactylus aegyptius, Mesalina olivieri, and M. rubropunctata. The previously reported occurrence of A. opheodurus in Sinai is doubted. The fact that the M. b. curatorum types were collected in the 1820s demonstrates the importance of museum collections.

A Preliminary Study Of The Freshwater Fauna Of Testate Amoebae Of Southeast Azerbaijan, Nataly Snegovaya, Ilham Alekperov

During 2005-2007, 75 species of the freshwater testate amoebae were found in the vicinities of Lenkoran (SE Azerbaijan). The morphology of 14 species is described. One genus and 3 species are new to science (Difflugia pisciformis sp.n., D. pseudoclaviformis sp.n., Lenkorania gen.n., Pseudodifflugia magna sp.n.). Eleven species are new for the fauna of the Caucasus and Azerbaijan.

Grandidierella Trispinosa, A New Species Of Amphipod From The Karachi Coast, Pakistan (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae), Hala Bano, Quddusi Bashir Kazmi

Grandidierella trispinosa sp. nov., the first species of the genus Grandidierella Coutiére, 1904 from Pakistan, is described from specimens collected at Sandspit backwater, west of Karachi. The new species is illustrated and compared with allied species. The holotype is housed in the Marine Reference Collection and Resource Centre, University of Karachi.

A new species, Cryptognathus ayyildizi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. Raphignathus bathursti Meyer and Ryke, 1960 (Raphignathidae), and Cheylostigmaeus californicus Summers and Ehara, 1965 (Stigmaeidae) are redescribed, and are new records for the Turkish fauna. Their worldwide distribution is also given.
