Oregon Natural Areas Plan, Oregon Natural Heritage Advisory Council Jan 2010

Oregon Natural Areas Plan, Oregon Natural Heritage Advisory Council

Institute for Natural Resources Publications

The rich diversity of ecosystems and native plants and animals is one of Oregon's most distinctive and valued qualities. Our state contains rain forests, dry forests, oak woodlands, alpine meadows, prairies, deserts, marshes, estuaries, dunes, rocky headlands, lakes and streams. There are a number of reasons it is so diverse. First are the extremes of climate, with rainfall ranging from over 200 inches a year along Oregon’s north coast, to less than 7 inches a year in the Alvord Desert, and temperatures from the very mild banana belt along the coast near the California border to the extremes of the …

The Dynamics Of Emergent Self-Organisation: Reconceptualising Child Development In Teacher Education, Minkang Kim, Derek Sankey Jan 2010

The Dynamics Of Emergent Self-Organisation: Reconceptualising Child Development In Teacher Education, Minkang Kim, Derek Sankey

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

For more than half a century, child development has endured as one of the main components of teacher education. But if children do develop, as developmentalists claim, what precisely is it that develops and how? Traditionally, within education, answers to these questions have drawn heavily on the theories of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. Piaget advocated the progressive development of reasoning through identifiable linear phases or stages. Vygotsky emphasised the role of cultural mediation, whereby the child internalises the habits of mind of his/her social group. More generally within cognitive psychology, development has been attributed to the interaction of two …

Application Of Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry For The Determination Of Veterinary Drug Residues In Food Of Animal Origin, Brian Kinsella Jan 2010

Application Of Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry For The Determination Of Veterinary Drug Residues In Food Of Animal Origin, Brian Kinsella

Theses

The QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) sample preparation approach was evaluated for the extraction of anthelmintic residues from bovine milk and tissues. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrom.etry (LC- MS/MS) was used for detection and quantification of residues, which included the benzimidazoles (BZs), macrocyclic lactones (MLS) and the generally overlooked flukicides.

Initial work focused on the optimisation of a QuEChERS method to effectively extract anthelmintic residues from milk and liver. The method involves the extraction of residues with acetonitrile (MeCN) in the presence of salts (MgS04 and NaCl) to induce phase separation. After shaking and centrifugation, …

Evaluation Of Stream Assessment Protocols For The Evaluation Of Habitat In Intermittent Headwater Streams, Eric Rasmussen Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Stream Assessment Protocols For The Evaluation Of Habitat In Intermittent Headwater Streams, Eric Rasmussen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

EPA and state water resource agencies are now placing greater emphasis on monitoring and managing headwater streams. Two EPA stream protocols are available for headwater stream assessment but little effort has been made to compare these two methods or their resulting habitat quality index scores. The objectives of this effort were to 1) compare data types of the two protocols; 2) compare how the two protocols assess intermittent streams using habitat quality index (HQI) scores; and 3) compare stream characteristic emphases (geomorphology, riparia, substrate, in-stream cover for biota and hydrology) between the two protocols and their effect on overall HQI …

The Legal Status Of Bcci: Unwarranted Ad-Hocism, Constitutional Hudles And The Pressing Need For A Cricket-Legislation, Aditya Sondhi Jan 2010

The Legal Status Of Bcci: Unwarranted Ad-Hocism, Constitutional Hudles And The Pressing Need For A Cricket-Legislation, Aditya Sondhi

National Law School of India Review

The Supreme Court in Zee Telefilms rejected the contention that the Board of Control for Cricket in India comes within the scope of the definition of 'State' as defined in Article 12 of the Constitution. The Court, by a 3:2 majority, came to the conclusion that the BCCI is essentially an autonomous non-statutory body with no declared monopoly over the game of cricket, no public function to discharge, no significant financial assistance from the Government and not being subject to what could be described as 'deep and pervasive control' by the Government. This paper seeks to analyse the more significant …

Evaluation Of Two Novel Aluminum-Free, Zinc-Based Glass Polyalkenoate Cements As Alternatives To Pmma Bone Cement For Use In Vertebroplasty And Balloon Kyphoplasty, Gladius Lewis, Mark R. Towler, Daniel Boyd, Matthew J. German, Anthony W. Wren, Owen M. Clarkin, Andrew Yates Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Two Novel Aluminum-Free, Zinc-Based Glass Polyalkenoate Cements As Alternatives To Pmma Bone Cement For Use In Vertebroplasty And Balloon Kyphoplasty, Gladius Lewis, Mark R. Towler, Daniel Boyd, Matthew J. German, Anthony W. Wren, Owen M. Clarkin, Andrew Yates

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) are now widely used for treating patients in whom the pain due to vertebral compression fractures is severe and has proved to be refractory to conservative treatment. These procedures involve percutaneous delivery of a bolus of an injectable bone cement either directly to the fractured vertebral body, VB (VP) or to a void created in it by an inflatable bone tamp (BKP). Thus, the cement is a vital component of both procedures. In the vast majority of VPs and BKPs, a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is used. This material has many shortcomings, notably …

Albian Rudist Fauna From The Karaburun Peninsula, İzmir Region, Western Turkey, Jean-Pierre Masse, Mükerrem Fenerci̇-Masse, İsmai̇l Işintek, Tali̇p Güngör

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Platform carbonates bearing shallow water foraminifera and dasycladale assemblages with an Albian stratigraphic significance, crop out at two localities on the Karaburun Peninsula: Barbaros and Zeytineli. Rudist faunas collected from these localities include Toucasia seunesi Douvillé, Pseudotoucasia catalaunica Astre , Mathesia darderi (Astre), Petalodontia ? sp., and Eoradiolites sp. aff. murgensis. The overall stratigraphic significance of this fauna is consistent with the Albian age derived from micropalaeontological data. Some taxonomic elements, e.g. Toucasia seunesi, Pseudotoucasia catalaunica and Mathesia darderi possess a broad Mediterranean palaeobiogeographic distribution. By contrast, Eoradiolites sp. aff. murgensis, an advanced form resembling Eoradiolites murgensis, restricted to the …

Epidiceras (Bivalvia, Hippuritoidea) From The Tithonian–Berriasian Torinosu-Type Limestones Of The Sakawa Area, Southwest Japan, Shin-Ichi Sano, Peter W. Skelton Jan 2010

Epidiceras (Bivalvia, Hippuritoidea) From The Tithonian–Berriasian Torinosu-Type Limestones Of The Sakawa Area, Southwest Japan, Shin-Ichi Sano, Peter W. Skelton

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Excavated specimens of two primitive rudists, Epidiceras speciosum (Goldfuss) and Epidiceras guirandi (de Loriol), are systematically described for the first time from the Tithonian-Berriasian Torinosu-type limestones of the Torinosu Group in the Sakawa area, Central Shikoku, Southwest Japan. E. guirandi was previously known only from the Late Kimmeridgian Mediterranean Tethys, so this occurrence in Southwest Japan significantly extends the recorded biogeographical and stratigraphical distribution of the species. Moreover, the documentation of E. speciosum from the Torinosu-type limestones in Japan and the Bau Limestone in Sarawak, Borneo, indicate that this species was already widespread throughout the Tethyan Realm at that time. …

Scientific Understandings Of Postpartum Illness: Improving Health Law And Policy?, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2010

Scientific Understandings Of Postpartum Illness: Improving Health Law And Policy?, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

In its broadest sense, this Article examines the relationship between science and the law in the context of postpartum illness. From classical antiquity to the present day, physicians and scientists have investigated the causes, correlates, and consequences of the depressions and psychoses that develop in some women following their transition to motherhood. The scientific investigation of postpartum illness has been characterized by an open-ended search for knowledge with the recognition that scientific findings published one day are subject to revision the next. Legislators and judges also have sought to understand postpartum illness as necessary to make laws that affect and …

Role Of The Osmotic Stress Regulatory Pathway In Morphogenesis And Secondary Metabolism In Filamentous Fungi, Ana M. Calvo, R.M. Duran, J.W. Cary Jan 2010

Role Of The Osmotic Stress Regulatory Pathway In Morphogenesis And Secondary Metabolism In Filamentous Fungi, Ana M. Calvo, R.M. Duran, J.W. Cary

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Environmental stimuli trigger an adaptative cellular response to optimize the probability of survival and proliferation. In eukaryotic organisms from mammals to fungi osmotic stress, mainly through the action of the high osmolarity glycerol (HOG) pathway, leads to a response necessary for adapting and surviving hyperosmotic environments. In this review we show that the osmoadaptative response is conserved but not identical in different fungi. The osmoadaptative response system is also intimately linked to morphogenesis in filamentous fungi, including mycotoxin producers. Previous studies indicate that the response to osmotic stress is also coupled to the biosynthesis of natural products, including mycotoxins.

Visible Or Invisible? Korean High School Students' Current Schooling Experiences In The United States, Bogum Yoon, Claudia Haag Jan 2010

Visible Or Invisible? Korean High School Students' Current Schooling Experiences In The United States, Bogum Yoon, Claudia Haag

Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership Faculty Scholarship

This qualitative study examined the current schooling experiences of eight Korean high school students in the United States. By comparing and contrasting recent immigrant adolescents and 1.5/2nd generation students, the purpose of this study was to explore how their identities as Koreans or Korean Americans were formed and shifted while they engaged with American teachers and peers in mainstream contexts. The findings suggest that even in the same ethnic group, differences were conspicuous. The newcomer group desperately wished to assimilate to mainstream culture by associating with American classmates. On the other hand, the 1.5/2nd generation group lived bi-culturally with dual …

How Folk Classification Interacts With Ethnoecological Knowledge: A Case Study From Chiapas, Mexico, Aaron M. Lampman Jan 2010

How Folk Classification Interacts With Ethnoecological Knowledge: A Case Study From Chiapas, Mexico, Aaron M. Lampman

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Folk taxonomies play a role in expanding or contracting the larger domain of ethnoecological knowledge that influences when and how cultural groups use living things. This paper demonstrates that ethnomycological classification is limited by utilitarian concerns and examines how Tzeltal Maya ethnoecological knowledge, although detailed and sophisticated, is heavily influenced by the structure of the folk classification system. Data were collected through 12 months of semi-structured and structured interviews, including freelists (n=100), mushroom collection with collaborators (n=5), open-ended interviewing (n=50), structured responses to photos (n=30), structured responses to mushroom specimens (n=15), and sentence frame substitutions (n=20). These interviews were focused …
