Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Even though the World Health Organization criteria's for classifying the dengue infection have been used for long time, recent studies declare that several difficulties have been faced by the clinicians to apply these criteria. Accordingly, many studies have proposed modified criteria to identify the risk in dengue patients based on statistical analysis techniques. None of these studies utilized the powerfulness of the self-organized map (SOM) in visualizing, understanding, and exploring the complexity in multivariable data. Therefore, this study utilized the clustering of the SOM technique to identify the risk criteria in 195 dengue patients. The new risk criteria were defined …

Nutritional And Management Methods To Decrease Nitrogen Losses From Beef Feedlots, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Nitrogen losses from open beef feedlots are a concern. Methods that decrease volatilization losses will lead to greater manure N, which is likely to be beneficial in open lot beef operations. Twelve or more pens were dedicated to N research whereby N intake, retention, and excretion were quantified and a mass balance conducted using manure, runoff, soil balance, and loss quantities. The objective was to decrease N volatilization losses or increase manure N or both. Dietary CP affects N excretion and N volatilization losses. Four experiments across 2 yr compared industry average CP (13%) to diets that were phase-fed to …

Multi-Robot System Control Architecture (Mrsca) For Agricultural Production, Santosh Pitla, Joe D. Luck, Scott A. Shearer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Coordinating multiple autonomous robots for achieving an assigned collective task presents a complex engineering challenge. In this paper multi robot system control architecture (MRSCA) for the coordination of multiple agricultural robots is developed. The two important aspects of MRSCA; coordination strategy and inter-robot communication were discussed with typical agricultural tasks as examples. Classification of MRS into homogeneous and heterogeneous robots was done to identify appropriate form of cooperative behavior and inter-robot communication. The framework developed, proposes that inter-robot communication is not always required for a MRS. Three types of cooperative behaviors; No-cooperation, modest cooperation and absolute cooperation for a MRS …

Oxidative stress and protein carbonylation is implicated in aging and various diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, and cancer. Therefore, the accurate identification and quantification of protein carbonylation may lead to the discovery of new biomarkers. We have developed a new method that combines avidin affinity selection of carbonylated proteins with iTRAQ labeling and LC fractionation of intact proteins. This simple LC-based workflow is an effective technique to reduce sample complexity, minimize technical variation, and enable simultaneous quantification of four samples. This method was used to determine protein oxidation in an iron accumulating mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae exposed to oxidative …

Long-Term Fish Oil Supplementation Induces Cardiac Electrical Remodeling By Changing Channel Protein Expression In The Rabbit Model, Xulin Xu, Min Jiang, Yuhong Wang, Timothy Smith, Clive M. Baumgarten, Mark A. Wood, Gea-Ny Tseng

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Clinical trials and epidemiological studies have suggested that dietary fish oil (FO) supplementation can provide an anti-arrhythmic benefit in some patient populations. The underlying mechanisms are not entirely clear. We wanted to understand how FO supplementation (for 4 weeks) affected the action potential configuration/duration of ventricular myocytes, and the ionic mechanism(s)/molecular basis for these effects. The experiments were conducted on adult rabbits, a widely used animal model for cardiac electrophysiology and pathophysiology. We used gas chromatography - mass spectroscopy to confirm that FO feeding produced a marked increase in the content of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the phospholipids of …
